While Democrats are busy worrying about âdecorumâ and âmaintaining normsâ and âreaching across the aisleâ to eagerly âcompromiseâ with Christoafascists, Republicans are doing unprecedented damage and routinely shatter every norm they encounter.
A divided House voted on Thursday to restrict abortion access, bar transgender health services and limit diversity training for military personnel, potentially imperiling passage of the annual defense bill as Republicans, goaded by their right flank, loaded the measure with conservative policy dictates.
The House voted 221 to 213 to overturn a Pentagon policy guaranteeing abortion access to service members regardless of where they are stationed, with Republicans propelling it to passage over near-unanimous Democratic opposition.
By a vote of 222 to 211, the House also adopted a measure to bar the militaryâs health plan from covering gender-transition surgeries â which currently can be covered only with a waiver â and gender-affirming hormone therapy. And the chamber was on track on Thursday to vote on a Republican proposal to strip funding from the Pentagon for all diversity, equity and inclusion training.
Taken together, the series of changes â which hard-right lawmakers had demanded be put on the floor as a condition for allowing the legislation to move forward â threatened to sap critical Democratic support for the annual defense policy measure, an $886 billion bill that would grant a 5.2 percent pay raise to military personnel, counter aggressive moves by China and Russia, and establish a special inspector general to oversee U.S. aid to Ukraine.
âI donât think Iâve ever not voted for an N.D.A.A,â said Representative Pete Aguilar, Democrat of California and the No. 3 Democrat, using the initials for the National Defense Authorization Act, one of the few pieces of legislation regarded as a must-pass item to come before Congress each year. âIâm a no.â
The action came during an extraordinarily bitter debate in the House over the annual defense policy measure, normally a bipartisan affair that draws broad support, which this week has instead become a battlefield in a political culture war stoked by the G.O.P.
In heated exchanges on the floor, Republicans accused Democrats and the Biden administration of trying to turn the Pentagon into a hotbed of radical progressivism, while Democrats said Republicans were trying to use the Defense Department to achieve an extreme agenda of rolling back the rights of women, people of color and transgender individuals.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has a line about the state of small-scale agriculture in America these days.
Itâs drawn from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which shows that as the average size of farms has risen, the nation had lost 544,000 of them since 1981.
âThatâs every farm today that exists in North Dakota and South Dakota, added to those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, added to those in Nebraska and Colorado, added to those in Oklahoma and Missouri,â Mr. Vilsack told a conference in Washington this spring. âAre we as a country OK with it?â
Even though the United States continues to produce more food on fewer acres, Mr. Vilsack worries that the loss of small farmers has weakened rural economies, and he wants to stop the bleeding. Unlike his last turn in the same job, under former President Barack Obama, this time his department is able to spend billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives passed under three major laws since 2021 â including the biggest investment in conservation programs in U.S. history.
The plan in a nutshell: Multiply and improve revenue streams to bolster farm balance sheets. Rather than just selling crops and livestock, farms of the future could also sell carbon credits, waste products and renewable energy.
âInstead of the farm getting one check, they potentially could get four checks,â Mr. Vilsack said in an interview. He is also helping schools, hospitals and other institutions to buy food grown locally, and investors to build meatpacking plants and other processing facilities to free farmers from powerful middlemen.
But itâs far from clear whether new policies and a cash infusion will be enough to counteract the forces that have pushed farmers off the land for decades â especially since much of the money is aimed at reducing carbon emissions, and so will also go toward large farming operations because they are the biggest polluters.
The number of farms has been declining since the 1930s, in large part because of migration from rural areas to cities and greater mechanization of agriculture, which allowed operators to cultivate larger tracts with fewer people. Over time, the federal government abandoned a policy of managing production to support prices, prompting growers to become more export-oriented while local distribution networks atrophied.
The last half-decade has been more disruptive than most. First came a trade war against China under former President Donald J. Trump, which drew retaliatory tariffs that cut into U.S. exports of farm products like soybeans and pork. Then came the pandemic, which scrambled supply chains and sapped farm labor, leaving crops to rot in the fields.
After Congress cushioned the blow with relief for farmers hurt by pandemic disruptions, things started to turn around. Even as the cost of supplies like fertilizer and seed rose, so did food prices, and farm incomes increased. In 2023, default rates on farm loans neared record lows.
âFarm balance sheets are the healthiest theyâve ever been in the aggregate,â said Brad Nordholm, the chief executive of Farmer Mac, a large secondary market for agricultural credit. âThe tools available to American farmers to have a more predictable return, even when commodity prices change and input prices change, is greater than itâs ever been before.â
But wholesale crop prices are expected to decline over the coming year. Rising interest rates have made it more difficult to finance planting and harvesting, borrow for an expansion or just get into agriculture â especially since land values jumped 29 percent from 2020 to 2023.
Thatâs especially true for the smallest farmers, who are far less likely to be tapped into Department of Agriculture assistance programs and are more vulnerable to adverse weather, labor shortages and consumer whims.
âI think in some ways theyâre in a worse position than before the pandemic,â said Benneth Phelps, executive director of the nonprofit Carrot Project, which advises small farmers in New England. âWe see a lot of farmers making hard decisions right now about whether to stay in or get out, because theyâve run out of steam.â
Thatâs where the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law come in.
The laws have collectively provided about $60 billion to the Agriculture Department, which has parceled it out across a variety of priorities, from relieving farmersâ debt to paying them to reduce their carbon emissions.
The biggest chunk â about $19.5 billion â has breathed new life into subsidies to encourage conservation practices that improve the land, like cutting back on plowing and planting cover crops to sequester carbon in the soil. Some of the programs had shrunk in successive Farm Bills, which are five-year legislative packages that covers most agricultural subsidies, and about two-thirds of farmers who applied each year got nothing.
The new funding has added 16,000 recipients over the past two years. Preliminary data shows the expansion is allowing smaller farms to take part.

Victor expresses his love through gifts, words of affirmation, emotional support, acts of service and physical affection. When it comes to what he likes to receive, however, he prefers verbal and emotional support, and physical affection above all else.

In his main verse, he tries to stick to a regular schedule because of his work. He usually sleeps around 10-11 pm and wakes up at 5 am to go for a run. In his Uni verse, though, his sleeping schedule can be pretty erratic owing to studying or partying. His occasional cocaine abuse can affect this as well, and sometimes he might even go to bed at around 4 or 5 am, or not sleep at all.
What are some signs theyâve fallen for someone?

As he gets older however and establishes himself in his business enough that he finds more time for himself, he does discover and explore his love for cooking (because he never had the chance in the past), and he's surprisingly great at it, too; one of his favorite things to do for his partner is to prepare a three course meal for them all on his own, or with them if they'd like to participate.

Below is the press article regarding the attack on the free roaming Waterberg Wild Dog pack, where the property owner poisoned a carcass killed by the pack, and when the pack returned, six of them ate the poisoned meat, and died in agony.
The property is Mountain View Bush Lodge, address Grootfontein 589 LQ, Waterberg. Combination game farm and tourist lodge. The owner promptly took down the website as this was made public.

We have devastating news to share from the African wild dog population in the Waterberg. The TOOG Pack has been persecuted, and six members of the pack have been lost to poisoning. The dogs were found dead last week on a private game farm along the R33, south of Lephalale.
Poison is a horrific way to die, and the dogs felt immense pain before ultimately succumbing to the poison. Poisoning carnivores is illegal in South Africa. It is indiscriminate, unethical, and would have been traumatic for the dogs to experience.
This senseless and selfish act has undermined the efforts of the 55 private farms that have played a role in conserving this pack over the last 3.5 years.
