South Africa prepares to release Charlie the zoo elephant into the wild

The Zimbabwean-born elephant was captured in 1984 and brought to South Africa as a circus elephant when he was just two years old.

In 2001, he was placed in the zoo, where he became one of the main attractions. He will finally be set free at the age of 42.

The Thimlich Ohinga cultural site was declared a national treasure on April 6, 1982, and was later listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2018. The name "Thimlich Ohinga" comes from the Dholuo language, spoken by the Nilotic people who live in the area. It means "a scary, thick forest”.
