Murray Mysteries Transcripts S1E16
Episode 16. The Man Himself
Written by May Toudic
Mina: Welcome to Murray Mysteries.
[Theme music plays.]
Mina: She’s gone. Lucy’s … dead. It still doesn’t sound right. That word. It’s too harsh, too definitive. It doesn’t fit her. Who she was brilliant, funny, charming, alive. But I guess that’s what she is. Dead. I hate when people say “passed.” She passed away. Like it was some smooth transition to a nice, restful place. Death isn’t a fucking spa, she didn’t sail off into the sunset. She was ill and she suffered and now we’re all suffering too.
Mina: Maybe I should be angry at everyone else. Maybe that would make me feel better. Just have a good shout at poor Dr. Seward for keeping all of this from me. For not telling me just how bad it was getting. For not telling me to come back and be with her. But you know what? It’s on me. The whole thing, it was all on my stupid podcast and I was too busy to listen. I was too focused on my own life and my own problems. I didn’t have ten minutes all week to catch up and realize that my best friend wasn’t okay. She needed me.
Mina: And I can’t blame anyone else for that. I’ve been through this, God. Keep going through it. These thoughts have been just on a loop in my head the past week since I got the call. But, I can’t seem to move past the feeling all the stages of grief at once. And confusion. Is confusion one of them? It should be. What the hell happened to her? I caught up on the podcast, of course, I did, but it still doesn’t make any sense.
Mina: It didn’t make anything clearer, just raised more questions. How she was losing so much blood? How did she keep relapsing, even when it looked like she was getting better? All I can tell is something went very, very wrong and I don’t… I don’t think it’s over, so I came back. To Lucy’s hometown, booked a— a hotel room. And just left. I know I’m too late for the funeral. I’m too late for everything. But…
Mina: I need answers and I don’t care how cryptic that Van Hellsing woman tries to be. I am going to get answers, as soon I can get a hold of her. I managed to guilt Jane into giving me her number, but she hasn’t been answering my calls. Probably stalling, she seems good at that. But she hasn’t met me.
Mina: Jonathan came with me. I guess that’s some good news. He’s feeling better now. Almost back to his old self. Though I’m not sure that’s entirely possible. He’s out getting some tea right now, whilst I unpack. That boy’s convinced tea can solve anything, I sweat I’ve drunk more of it in the past week than all my years in uni combined. And that’s really saying something.
Mina: It’s sweet. Really. He knows— He’s doing his best. I don’t know what I’d do without him. I love him. Even if he sucks at comforting people.
[A door opens.]
Jonathan: He’s here, I saw him. He’s here. Mina, we have to go.
Mina: Woah, woah, woah. Wait— wait a minute, slow down. Breathe for me, okay, sit down. What happened?
Jonathan: I saw him, out there, in the street. I swear it was him.
Mina: H— him who? You haven’t told me.
Jonathan: The Count. He was younger but it was him I know it. We have to go. I can’t let him hurt you too. I can’t.
Mina: Did he hurt you?
Jonathan: I don’t— I don’t— I don’t remember. I don’t think so. I, I know he’s dangerous, I don’t know how I just do.
Mina: Okay. Listen, I believe you, but we’re safe here. He can’t get to us. And you can’t travel like this. If you lie down a bit, I promise I’ll lock the door and stay alert. Alright? And as soon as you wake up, we can talk about what to do next.
Jonathan: Yeah, alright.
Mina: Good. Go get some rest.
[Footsteps.]
Mina: This isn’t good. I don’t think he’s making it up. But the fact that he doesn’t remember anything… I’ve been hanging onto that memory card. Just in case. I didn’t want to do this. I really didn’t. But I don’t think I have a choice. I can’t help him if I don’t know what happened.
[A click. A beep.]
Mina: This is crazy. I can’t, I can’t believe you went through all this, the fear, the pain. The hopelessness. In a way, I’m glad he doesn’t remember. I just wish I didn’t know either. I can’t ignore this. If Jonathan really did see that man here, this is way bigger than me. Bigger than all this. What if Lu—
[She sighs.]
Mina: It would make sense. It would explain … I have to talk to her. Van Hellsing. She’ll know. I think she’s known all along. I think she’ll want to help. We’re going to need all the help we can get. That means you, too. I didn’t want to listen to Jonathan’s recording. Let alone share them. But I can’t keep them to myself. You need to listen to this. The world needs to know. And if anyone, anywhere, knows more than we do. Maybe we can do this. Maybe we can face Dracula.
[Credits music begins.]

“You know, there are two aspects to this curious situation of yours,” Anselm said, absorbed in tearing bread. He glanced aside at me, a sudden smile lighting his face. He shook his head in wonderment. “I can scarcely believe it still, you know. Such a marvel! Truly, God has been good, to show me such things.”
“Well, that’s nice,” I said, a bit dryly, “I don’t know whether He’s been quite so obliging to me.”
“Really? I think so.” Anselm sank down on his haunches, crumbling bread between his fingers. “True,” he said, “the situation has caused you no little personal inconvenience—”
“That’s one way of putting it,” I muttered.
“But it may also be regarded as a signal mark of God’s favor,” he went on, disregarding my interruption. The bright brown eyes regarded me speculatively.
“I prayed for guidance, kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament,” he went on, “and as I sat in the silence of the chapel, I seemed to see you as a shipwrecked traveler. And it seems to me that that is a good parallel to your present situation, is it not? Imagine such a soul, Madame, suddenly cast away in a strange land, bereft of friends and familiarity, without resources save what the new land can provide. Such a happening is disaster, truly, and yet may be the opening for great opportunity and blessings. What if the new land shall be rich? New friends may be made, and a new life begun.”
“Yes, but—” I began.
“So”—he said authoritatively, holding up a finger to hush me—“if you have been deprived of your earlier life, perhaps it is only that God has seen fit to bless you with another, that may be richer and fuller.”
“Oh, it’s full, all right,” I agreed. “But—”
“Now, from the standpoint of canon law,” he said frowning, “there is no difficulty regarding your marriages. Both were valid marriages, consecrated by the church. And strictly speaking, your marriage to the young chevalier in there antedates your marriage to Monsieur Randall.”
“Yes, ‘strictly speaking,’ ” I agreed, getting to finish a sentence for once. “But not in my time. I don’t believe canon law was constructed with such contingencies in mind.”
Anselm laughed, the pointed end of his beard quivering in the slight breeze.
“More than true, ma chère, more than true. All that I meant was that, considered from a strictly legal standpoint, you have committed neither sin nor crime in what you have done regarding these two men. Those were the two aspects of your situation, of which I spoke earlier: what you have done, and what you will do.” He reached up a hand and took mine, tugging me down to sit beside him, so our eyes were on a level.
“That is what you asked me when I heard your confession, is it not? What have I done? And what shall I do?”
“Yes, that’s it. And you’re telling me that I haven’t done anything wrong? But I’ve—”
He was, I thought, nearly as bad as Dougal MacKenzie for interrupting.
“No, you have not,” he said firmly. “It is possible to act in strict accordance with God’s law and with one’s conscience, you comprehend, and still to encounter difficulties and tragedy. It is the painful truth that we still do not know why le bon Dieu allows evil to exist, but we have His word for it that this is true. ‘I created good,’ He says in the Bible, ‘and I created evil.’ Consequently, even good people sometimes, I think, especially good people,” he added meditatively, “may encounter great confusion and difficulties in their lives. For example, take the young boy you were obliged to kill. No,” he said, raising a hand against my interruption, “make no mistake. You were obliged to kill him, given the exigencies of your situation. Even Holy Mother Church, which teaches the sanctity of life, recognizes the need for defense of oneself and of one’s family. And having seen the earlier condition of your husband”—he cast a look back at the guests’ wing—“I have no doubt that you were obliged to take the path of violence. That being so, you have nothing with which to reproach yourself. You do, of course, feel pity and regret for the action, for you are, Madame, a person of great sympathy and feeling.” He gently patted the hand that rested on my drawn-up knees.
“Sometimes our best actions result in things that are most regrettable. And yet you could not have acted otherwise. We do not know what God’s plan for the young man was—perhaps it was His will that the boy should join him in heaven at that time. But you are not God, and there are limits to what you can expect of yourself.”
I shivered briefly as a cold wind came round the corner, and drew my shawl closer. Anselm saw it, and motioned toward the pool.
“The water is warm, Madame. Perhaps you would care to soak your feet?”
“Warm?” I gaped incredulously at the water. I hadn’t noticed before, but there were no broken sheets of ice in the corners of the trough, as there were on the holy water fonts outside the church, and small green plants floated in the water, sprouting from the cracks between the rocks that lined the pool.
In illustration, Anselm slipped off his own leather sandals. Cultured as his face and voice were, he had the square, sturdy hands and feet of a Normandy peasant. Hiking the skirt of his habit to his knees, he dipped his feet into the pool. The carp dashed away, turning almost at once to nose curiously at this new intrusion.
“They don’t bite, do they?” I asked, viewing the myriad voracious mouths suspiciously.
“Not flesh, no,” he assured me. “They have no teeth to speak of.”
I shed my own sandals and gingerly inserted my feet into the water. To my surprise, it was pleasantly warm. Not hot, but a delightful contrast to the damp, chilly air.
“Oh, that’s nice!” I wiggled my toes with pleasure, causing considerable consternation among the carp.
“There are several mineral springs near the abbey,” Anselm explained. “They bubble hot from the earth, and the waters hold great healing powers.” He pointed to the far end of the trough, were I could see a small opening in the rocks, half obscured by the drifting water plants.
“A small amount of the hot mineral water is piped here from the nearest spring. That is what enables the cook to maintain live fish for the table at all seasons; normally the winter weather would be too bitter for them.”
We paddled our feet in congenial silence for a time, the heavy bodies of the fish flicking past, occasionally bumping into our legs with a surprisingly weighty impact. The sun came out again, bathing us in a weak but perceptible warmth. Anselm closed his eyes, letting the light wash over his face. He spoke again without opening them.
“Your first husband—Frank was his name?—he, too, I think, must be commended to God as one of the regrettable things that you can do nothing about.”
“But I could have done something,” I argued. “I could have gone back—perhaps.”
He opened one eye and regarded me skeptically.
“Yes, ‘perhaps,’ ” he agreed. “And perhaps not. You need not reproach yourself for hesitating to risk your life.”
“It wasn’t the risk,” I said, flicking my toes at a big black-and-white splotched carp. “Or not entirely. It was—well, it was partly fear, but mostly it was that I—I couldn’t leave Jamie.” I shrugged helplessly. “I—simply couldn’t.”
Anselm smiled, opening both eyes.
“A good marriage is one of the most precious gifts from God,” he observed. “If you had the good sense to recognize and accept the gift, it is no reproach to you. And consider…” He tilted his head to one side, like a brown sparrow.
“You have been gone from your place for nearly a year. Your first husband will have begun to reconcile himself to your loss. Much as he may have loved you, loss is common to all men, and we are given means of overcoming it for our good. He will have started, perhaps, to build a new life. Would it do good for you to desert the man who needs you so deeply, and whom you love, to whom you are united in the bonds of holy matrimony, to return and disrupt this new life? And in particular, if you were to go back from a sense of duty, but feeling that your heart is given elsewhere—no.” He shook his head decisively.
“No man can serve two masters, and no more can a woman. Now, if that were your only valid marriage, and this”—he nodded again toward the guest wing—“merely an irregular attachment, then your duty might lie elsewhere. But you were bound by God, and I think you may honor your duty to the chevalier.
“Now, as to the other aspect—what you shall do. That may require some discussion.” He pulled his feet from the water, and dried them on the skirt of his habit.
“Let us adjourn this meeting to the abbey kitchens, where perhaps Brother Eulogius may be persuaded to provide us with a warming drink.”
Finding a stray bit of bread on the ground, I tossed it to the carp and stooped to put my sandals on.
“I can’t tell you what a relief it is to talk to someone about it,” I said. “And I still can’t get over the fact that you really do believe me.”
He shrugged, gallantly offering me an arm to hold while I slipped the rough straps of the sandal over my instep.
“Ma chère, I serve a man who multiplied the loaves and fishes”—he smiled, nodding at the pool, where the swirls of the carps’ feeding were still subsiding—“who healed the sick and raised the dead. Shall I be astonished that the master of eternity has brought a young woman through the stones of the earth to do His will?”
Well, I reflected, it was better than being denounced as the whore of Babylon.

Star Wars Resistance S1E16: The New Trooper Instant Reaction
Hey welcome back to Resistance!
Just a note, I’m not doing a reaction next week. I’m going to be on vacation
Let’s get started!
Oh Captain Doza… You let more and more troopers come on your station. You brought this on yourself
Commander Pyre shows up
Doza with his tea
Awwww it’s the kids from Tehar
And they’re fishing for sky fish things!
THE STORMTROOPERS FOUND THE KIDS FROM TEHAR!
They done knocked that guy out with a fish
I really love this clash of view about the First Order. Tam feels safer with them there but Kaz is aware of stormtrooper military history. It’s really nice to see the balance of these opinions
Yeager talking about the horrors of the Empire
And Tam arguing that her grandfather was an Imperial factory worker with an honest job to feed his family
ALL of this is so good!
All of Kaz’s sneaking around and keeping Tam out of things is starting to come to a head! She doesn’t trust him anymore, she’s calling out Yeager for taking sides, and she’s getting in his business
I am really happy with this Tam development
So the kids from Tehar put a stormtrooper in a closet and is keeping him knocked out
And Neeku just smacked the trooper in the head
They’re going to accidentally kill this damn stormtrooper, I just know it
I love the turtle people so much
Kaz is going to be undercover as a stormtrooper and thinks everything will be fine
I like that some of Kaz’s military training is coming into play…
And then you just watch him derp around as a trooper
THE PEOPLE OF THE QUIKTRIP ARE PROTESTING THE TROOPERS
Tam finding out about the First Order destroying the kids from Tehar’s world
The stormtrooper woke up all disorientated and they all knocked him back out again
I actually feel slightly bad for this stormtrooper being left in Neeku’s care
A LITTLE EVIL BB-8 DROID FROM THE MOVIE HAS CAUGHT KAZ
Kaz defeated the droid…
…only to be caught by the commander but they’re buying his story maybe I think they’re buying it I don’t know and everything is stressful!
CAPTAIN DOZA IMPERIAL BACKSTORY
Doza just got kicked out of his own office
WHOA! OKAY LET’S CATCH UP! Kaz reported in his fake reports, Pyre says he’s erratic, and now they want to wipe Kaz’s mind for reprogramming!?!?
For one, holy shit. Two, poor Finn if that’s how he was raised. Three, KAZ GET OUT OF THERE! RUN KAZ RUN
Neeku don’t want any Kaz kisses
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a447b7f3131ef312ee463ed4776fc83a/tumblr_inline_pmqnbamJZR1qkdogo_500.jpg)
They swapped the stormtrooper and Kaz out of the armor just in time
Kaz and Yeager check out the data that they got and realize the First Order wants the QuikTrip to fuel their ships
This week was tense!
I’ll see you in two weeks after my vacation!

TSS Project part 7: The Tea is Hot
Warning as usual, long post. I think this is the longest single thing I’ve written for a non-academic purpose since my middle school fanfiction days lmao
Section 1: Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby
oo look a section header
What do I mean by titling this section Let’s Talk About Sex? Well, technically, I mean Let’s Talk About Disproportionate Representation of Gender and Stereotyping, but there wasn’t a catchy song lyric to go along with that. I am an anthropology major but I’m also a sucker for pizzazz.
I’ve noted in the past that there’s a ginormous gender imbalance in TSS- and pretty much all kids’ tv in general except things that are explicitly marketed towards 6-year-old girls. Don’t believe me? Google it. Shows that are “for everyone” or “for boys” only have a female:male ratio of 1:3 or 2:5 if we’re really lucky. And those female characters are usually ascribed one of a few personalities, which you’re no doubt familiar with if you, I don’t know, have eyes and ears.
Granted, this show and the other example I was thinking of, My Little Pony, are shows that play into the characters’ main traits by linking them to their ~Special Powers~ but that still doesn’t change the fact that they are VERY stereotypical Girls. Especially Rarity, Fluttershy, Flora and Stella. Like, goddamn.
Here’s a disclaimer, though: stereotypes exist for a reason. Whether that reason is prejudice or observation changes the nature of the stereotype, but it doesn’t change the fact that that’s the reason why it’s there. Playing somewhat into stereotypes is a good way to play to the things that people know, which in turn draws them in. The problem is making up your entire cast with reductive character tropes à la 1970s Super Friends cartoons, and you do NOT want to go full Super Friends.
Their names are literally just Apache Chief and Samurai. That is, like, uncomfortably racist to a 2018 (or 2000 anything) audience. But shit like that isn’t just limited to the 1970s. Reductive- sexist or racist, usually- stereotypes are permeated into American society so thoroughly that we usually don’t realize that there needs to be more nuance to the characters we’re showing our kids than “this guy is Native American. That’s who he is.” Because that’s what happens with most stereotypes. “This girl is the music girl. That’s what she does. She sings in the shower and has music tattoos and all her fairy powers are music based and...” It’s just So Much.
I had another point. Right.
~Girly~ shows have a main cast made up of entirely of female characters; with supporting males entering every so often just to be “there.” Romantic interests tailored specifically to the protagonists’ wildest dreams, usually. This does happen in ~~boys’ tv~~ too, but not in the same way. You know. The swoon-y, heartfelt love poem, I-can-change-him way. It’s different than how female characters are “just there” in boys’ tv, because then they’re either nagging mothers or coveted prom dates. I was going to say I don’t know why that is, but I do know. It’s the patriarchy. What I don’t know is why the “just there” thing happens in girls’ tv. What I do know is that I could write my goddamn thesis on why the “just there” thing happens in boys’ tv- and it is a thing- and why I hate it, but I don’t think you can swear in an undergrad thesis and I’m not sure if I’m ever getting a master’s degree. yaaaaay
So here’s a TL;DR for what’s coming:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2ddc71907fd4a7d8e787b7bc2de58668/tumblr_inline_p5mu75C5Hf1rah2th_500.jpg)
http://secretsaturdays.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Characters
If you’d like to fact-check me about the gender imbalance in TSS, the link for the character section of the wiki is above. I only counted characters who were on the show (TGIS? new fone who dis) and important enough to be included in the wiki, not the ones who only made an appearance in the comics. (Don’t fucking @ me for not including people like “security guard who refused van Rook’s American money,” although most of those people were men too.) Otherwise the ratio would have been even more skewed blue because there were literally no new ladies introduced in the comics? At least none important enough to be included in the wiki? And there were literally only four recurring female characters in the entire series at all period, sixteen females total if you count the single-use randos (not mentioning whether those characters said lines which advanced the plot or anything either, because some did and some didn’t). SIXTEEN. Let me break them down for you:
Drew: second-tier protagonist
Miranda Grey: second-tier main character (both pro- and antagonist)
Abbey Grey: love interest/second-tier antagonist
“Charles and Lily’s Mom”: single-use background rando from s1e9
Lily: single-use plot device character from s1e9
Dr. Pachacutec: single-use plot device character from s1e11
Drew Monday: third-tier antagonist
Rani Nagi: third-tier antagonist
Ruby: single-use rando from s1e21
Sita: fourth-tier antagonist from s1e16
Tica: single-use plot device character from s2e3
Unnamed Agent #1: single-use background rando from s1e23
Wadi: third-tier protagonist
Zon: could be replaced with a potato and nobody would care
Anti-matter Zon: could be replaced with an anti-matter potato and nobody would care
Drew and Doyle’s mom: single-use plot device character from s1e7
Does that look like a lot of characters? Well, sure it does, when you write out descriptions like that for all of them. Let’s do all the guys, though, just for shits and giggles.
Zak: main progtaonist and story focus
Doc: second-tier protagonist
Doyle: second-tier protagonist
Fiskerton: second-tier protagonist
Komodo: second-tier protagonist
Argost: main antagonist
Munya: secondary main antagonist/Argost’s second and third pair of arms
Ulraj: third-tier protagonist
Dr. Beeman: second-tier main character
Dr. Cheechoo: second-tier main character
Dr. Cheeveyo: third-tier main character
Dr. Bara: single-use plot device character from s1e25
Odele: fourth-tier protagonist (whose side was he on in the Secret Scientist fight?) in two episodes
Epsilon: second- to third-tier antagonist
Francis: third-tier antagonist
Having fun yet?
Joseph: fourth-tier antagonist from s1e16
Ron Bantington: single-use plot device character from s2e1
Pierre Groshomme: single-use plot device character from s2e6
Professor Misuki: fourth-tier main character
Shoji Fuzen: fourth-tier antagonist in two episodes
Eterno: fourth-tier antagonist from s1e11
Maboul: fourth-tier protagonist (barely)
Baron Finster: fourth-tier antagonist
Basil Lancaster: single-use plot device character from s1e15
Bud Harger: single-use plot device character from s1e21
Charles: single-use plot device character from s1e9
Dr. Lee: single-use plot device character from s1e15
Cody: single-use rando from s1e21
Gokul: single-use plot device character from s2e5
Ian: single-use background rando from s1e9
Since Tumblr doesn’t allow numbering to continue after linebreaks, we’re up to 30 now.
The Constable: single-use plot device character from s1e9
Leonidas van Rook: third-tier main character
Piecemeal: fourth-tier antagonist and source of much wasted potential
Zak Monday: third-tier antagonist
Doc Monday: fourth-tier antagonist
Komodo Monday: third-tier antagonist
Fiskerton Monday: fourth-tier antagonist
Unnamed Agent #2: single-use background rando from s1e23
Unnamed Agent #3: single-use background rando from s1e23
Wyatt: single-use rando from s1e21
Drew and Doyle’s dad: single-use plot device character from s1e7
Ulraj’s dad: single-use plot device character from s1e6
FORTY-TWO 👏 GODDAMN 👏 MEN👏 AND 👏 SIXTEEN 👏 WOMEN. Y’all. Oh my god.
Going further, I want to look at stereotyping. Now, you can get some of that by looking at the other parts of this post series (torpedo tits discussion in the character design post whaaaaaat) but I want to go deeper.
Of the sixteen TSS women:
5 are love interests of male characters (Drew is Doc’s wife and she also dated van Rook, Drew Monday is Doc Monday’s wife, Abbey dated Doyle, Wadi is Zak’s crush) + everybody ships Miranda Grey with Beeman in some capacity
4 characters are explicitly known to be mothers, and in two cases it’s central to their identity insofar as that it’s how we refer to them (Drew, Drew Monday, Drew and Doyle’s mom and Charles and Lily’s mom)
4 have no speaking or communication with humans other than through Zak’s cryptid powers (Unnamed Agent #1, Drew and Doyle’s mom, Zon and her antimatter counterpart)
3 of them aren’t human or humanoid (Rani Nagi, Zon and her antimatter counterpart)
3 have no names (Unnamed Agent #1, Drew and Doyle’s mom and Charles and Lily’s mom)
8 of them only appear in one episode apiece (Sita, Tica, Lily, Charles and Lily’s mom, Drew and Doyle’s mom, Unnamed Agent #1, Ruby, Dr. Pachacutec) + the reappearance of Zon’s antimatter counterpart is very short and doesn’t add much to the episode it’s in.
Only 1 of them is depicted as being “older,” or in the “gray hair and wrinkles” stage (Dr. Pachacutec)
I know what you’re going to say. “But Lilly, if you divide them all into categories, of course it’s going to sound bad!” Well...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e2940e9547de031552d91f3b286a2002/tumblr_inline_p5myhvsEAs1rah2th_500.jpg)
Only 5 of the men are without names, which makes there be a higher percentage of unnamed women than men (18.75% of women to 12.5% of men)
The main pro- and antagonists are both male (Zak and Argost)
6 men are explicitly known to be fathers (or raising a child), but in only 2 cases it’s central to their identity insofar as that it’s how we refer to them (Doc, Doc Monday, Maboul, Epsilon, Drew and Doyle’s dad, Ulraj’s father). Although, in the case of Ulraj’s father, he’s often referred to as the King of Kumari Kandam as well, so that adds another layer. There’s no concrete way to refer to the female characters without names because “Blackwell” is only suspected to be Drew’s maiden name (Jay Stephens can @ me about that) and Charles and Lily’s mom can be referred to as something like “Owlman victim” but not really much else.
10 male characters are non-humans (Argost, Munya, Fisk, Komodo, Fiskerton Monday, Komodo Monday, Eterno, Professor Misuki, Ulraj and Ulraj’s father) but of those non-humans nearly all of them can speak or communicate with humans (Fisk, Fiskerton Monday, Komodo and Munya don’t speak) as opposed to the three non-human female characters (Rani Nagi, Zon and her antimatter counterpart) two of whom can’t do either unless you have cryptid powers (Zon and her antimatter counterpart)
Only 2 of the men have no speaking or otherwise communicating during their appearances (Drew and Doyle’s dad and Ulraj’s father) out of the whole 42 of them, even the plot device characters say something except for two who only appear in flashbacks. That’s opposed to 4 of the 16 women who don’t speak or otherwise communicate and 2 of the female characters can’t communicate at all (see above). Those two percentages are hugely different. (4.76% of men vs. a full 25% of women)
At least 6 of the male characters are in the “gray hair and/or wrinkles” stage. (Dr. Lee, Professor Misuki’s human body, van Rook, Baron Finster, Basil Lancaster, Ian) Now, 6 out of 42 is NOT a high number (see above). But it’s a lot higher than the number of women who were allowed to look that way. Thank God they treated Pachacutec with some dignity, even though she only appeared in one episode.
How’s that for “bad if you put it that way?”
Now, listen. I’m not calling TSS a bad show. I fucking lived and breathed this shit for YEARS as a kid, and I’m still very impressed with it- on other levels than gender equality. The thing about it is that it was most likely intended for boys, the idea was conceived by a man, and it was produced in 2008 American society. The whole thing is covered in latent sexism like a minivan is covered in snot. Just because you don’t see the nasty doesn’t mean it’s not there.
I still like the show for reasons that tie into my earlier point about stereotyping: TSS breaks a bunch of them.
A highly educated, rich black man
A happy interracial relationship
Parents who are just the right level of involved with their child instead of being helicopters or ignorant assholes
Not drawing negative attention to the hijabi character at all
The women aren’t nags
No one is reduced to labels like “woman” or “Native American guy”
That’s the thing that we miss sometimes: you can love something while still realizing its faults, and TSS has faults along with its goodness. Namely the gender imbalance, but you can read my other problems with the series in my other posts tagged #tss project.

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme originally from Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things I have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on my blog.
So my week in short.
Monday: I went to the dietician, lost a few pounds and some centimetres again =]. Went to my physical therapist, got some exercises for my knee and leg. Went to my speech therapist, he said he thought I was really doing great with my stutter over the last few weeks. It’s improving again. [stress makes me stutter more…. so that means less stress in my life??]
Tuesday: I had a good conversation about life and a fairly quiet and down day for me… That sucked, I was alone and felt empty… So my day was mostly brainlessly playing games on my phone…
Wednesday: Had a class at night. No model, but learned a great deal on colouring hair. Used my exercise head again to roll a perm. Questioned myself because of some loose rolls I have to put back again every time.. My teachers said not to worry it looks perfect and can’t get any better than that. Woohoo, yay me!!!!
Thursday: Had a job interview in The Hague. In the storm…. Meant that my drive to the Hague was 45 minutes and from was an hour and 45 minutes -_-‘ They want me to join them, but because of the hours I can’t work full-time and that won’t give me enough money right now… So it was a success, but no succes after all…. On with my job hunting!!
At night I visited my Taekwondo club – I miss them – and went for a drink with a few friends from Taekwondo =] It cheered me up a big bit =]
Friday: This was actually a good day. Played some Pokemon Go – don’t judge, or do, I don’t mind… Grew up with Pokemon and still like it… Gives me free exercise and oxygen hahahaha] – with the bf, went for a cappuccino and scored a faux leather jacket for €3 and a pair of amazingly comfy jeans for €20 =] yay me!!
Saturday: was a quiet day for most of the day. The bf had an early shift and went to take a nap after he got home. But I went to see Fifty Shades Darker with his mom!! I really liked it!! More story than the first one… I haven’t read the books yet and now I’m really thinking about reading them after the movies are done, because of the big differences there are….
Sunday: Today was a day of some chores, some TV, some reading, some [okay some more] food and blogging =] I managed to do 3 reviews today!! Woohoo, I’m getting my game back =] =] =] And my Sunday Post is on a Sunday without a week missed =] Still trying to catch up with the Top Ten Tuesdays and such, but got to live too and not feel pressured all the time.. So I will catch up on ALL of them – YES, ALL OF THEM – but without the pressure for me. I don’t want to be pressured anymore than I have to be, so my blogging is becoming my place to have fun and zen. Instead of I HAVE TO WRITE THIS TODAY OR THE EARTH WILL BE GONE kind of attitude…
So you all have a great and zen and fun week and I’ll catch you later!!
XOXO
Felicia

TNG Season 1 Ep Guide
S1E1/2-Encounter at Farpoint: Must watch. S1E3-The Naked Now: Not necessary but funny. S1E4-Code of Honor: Bad. Don’t watch. S1E5-The Last Outpost: Okay. Should watch because it introduces a new prominent alien race. S1E6-Where No One Has Gone Before: Very Good. Sets up important character stuff for Wesley. S1E7-Lonely Among Us: Don’t remember. Seems fine. S1E8-Justice: Stupid and bad, but kind of a right of passage for TNG fans. S1E9-The Battle: Should watch. Provides good backstory for Picard. S1E10-Hide and Q: All Q episodes should be watched, even if they don’t seem relevant. He needs to remain in the back of your mind at all times for plot reasons. S1E11-Haven: Should watch. Establishes a character who becomes much more interesting later on. S1E12-The Big Goodbye: Not necessary but fun. S1E13-Datalore: Must watch. S1E14-Angel One: Bad. S1E15-11001001: Probably fine, don’t remember. S1E16-Too Short a Season: I think it was good? S1E17-When the Bough Breaks: I don’t remember if it was good but it sets up how the Enterprise is like a weird city with civilians on it. S1E18-Home Soil: I think it was good? S1E19-Coming of Age: Must watch. Sets up later episode. S1E20-Heart of Glory: Must watch. Good character development for Worf. S1E21-The Arsenal of Freedom: Alright. Has important info about the relationship between Picard and Crusher. S1E22-Symbiosis: Very good. Shows how Picard deals with problems within the confines of the Prime Directive. S1E23-Skin of Evil: Must watch. S1E24-We’ll Always Have Paris: Not necessary but really cool. Data does cool shit. S1E25-Conspiracy: Must watch. S1E26-The Neutral Zone: Not necessary but is kinda funny and has some good world building. @chumpedkid
