An Appointment in Samarra

Your master is a merchant in Baghdad. He has sent you to the market to buy provisions. In the marketplace, you are jostled by a woman in the crowd, and when you turn, you see that it is Death that jostled you. She looks at you and makes a threatening gesture. Overcome with fear, you rush back to your master’s house and recount your story. You say “Now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me”. The merchant lends you his horse. You mount it, dig your spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse can gallop, you go. Later that night, in Samarra, you find Death standing in the crowd. White and trembling, you ask “Why did you make a threatening gesture to me when you saw me this morning? And why are you here in Samarra”. And she replies “That was not a threatening gesture, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see you in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with you tonight in Samarra”.

This is a retelling of “An Appointment in Samarra” rendered as an example of a second person narrative technique. The intent of this narrative technique is to remind you that your attention is under control of the text you are immersed in. The technique places you within the world of the text. The desired effect is created through the second person, by the use of the word “you”. The usage of the second person is moderated, if not minimal. The world is constructed bimodally. One which is objective and observer-impartial. The second is subjective and is implied only in relation to the you. This mode is also augmented minimally on top of the objective world. Words such as “seemingly” and “apparently” are used to construct the world in relation to you. This construction is minimal and the second person is absent from the world building. You only encounter the body of text, it’s world, its content and its narrative. Your attention is guided voicelessly, as though you are on solitary journey through a forest, the text being the biosphere and the words, a shared trail for travellers along the common narrative. The absence of the narrator, the creator-god of the text, means that you are the key character in the world. Your engagement, attention, with the text-world is crucial to trigger the desired emotions. Empathy, happiness, anger. See, the narrator is never here, but nevertheless, the presence of the narrator-world-builder is felt. The text was obviously written by someone, the text needs an overarching purpose, and the delivery of the narrative seems personal, as if the entire world is talking to you. Like a personal creator god. A personal narrator if you will. But, alas, such beings do not belong to this world. Their being, their presence lies beyond the physicality of your solid paper or digital screen. They communicate to you via such mediums. Narratives, essays, texts, stories. Thus the mythology of their being, or non-being rather, is irrelevant, ignored in lieu of the truth, the matter of the text. The timeless text-world belongs only to you. Rather than being constrained by space-time or cause-and-effect, you are destined to follow the monodirectional flow of words, paragraphs, chapters towards an end constructed by a certain non-being narrator.

You see, you are the slave from Baghdad. For a while, you believe that your master is a merchant. When faced with the inevitability of the end, you attempt to seize control, to imagine an alternative in Samarra. But, masters are many. They appear as merchants, ladies at city markets, Death and non-being narrators. In fact, every encounter you’ve had with the text, every word is a determinant of your destiny. Your agency, your imagination is a mere illusion. This narrative, in the second person, has reinforced the fact that your attention has been captured by the text. But, is your attention ever yours? Are you in control of that ultimate determinant of your flow, your destiny? The non-beings aren’t usually as kind as the second person narrative. The non-beings are your masters, and they do not always announce that you are in their world. In your disattention, mindlessness, ignorance you have handed the masters, the non-beings the keys to your mind. They exercise their power, reaching out to your mind through a back door, ignorance. As long as you are not aware of the precise location of your attention, you are enslaved. Flows of words, pictures, videos, information, multiplying ceaselessly in the digital infinity of your smartphone. Enticing “realities” from the One-Eyed Monster. Promises of salvation from the executors of the Modern Project. Your world is built on the ignorance of yours and your fellow slaves. The whip of the masters seizes your attention, but leaves you unaware, perpetually ignorant. These flows of words, sounds, pictures are akin to tentacles, the neurons of power, gripping their hold, circling your being. They spread through the body politic of the modern slave society, promising salvation, fostering ignorance. Oh fallen slave, descendent of Sisyphus! Do you suffer? You have been to the elders? What do they say? Dharma? Faith in the one true non-being? Seize the means of production? But what does any of this matter? The chains of your servitude are strongest where they begin, within the shallow confines of your mind. Here in this brilliant pool of thoughts, memories and neural correlates, you will also find your salvation. By unshackling the chains of ignorance and reclaiming your attention you are truly free to engage with the world. The text-world is monodirectional. It’s coercion lies in following its words as they flow, but so is its meaning. Outside though, the determinants of your destiny. numerous still, aren’t monodirectional or monodimensional. Information is coercive only as far as your attention is complicit, but power structures remain impervious to perfect attention.

She replies “I am astonished to see you in Bagdad, for I have an appointment with you tonight in Samarra”. You cannot believe your fortune, for you could now walk away from Death. You have never been to Samarra, nor have you any intention of ever going there. You thank the heavens, the gods and the stars for they have lined in your favour. As you ponder over the idiosyncrasies of enslavement and death, you are curious about Death’s words. So, you borrow your master’s horse, you mount it, dig your spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse can gallop, you go. Later that night in Samarra, you find Death standing in the crowd.
