The many, many combats of this movie were artfully shot and kinetically edited, especially the gladiatorial combat in Rome, the Renaissance jousting, and the American Revolution and Civil War (both of which use “wide shots” to great effect). I loved the “Bring Out Your Dead!” reference to “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” during the medieval part (well, maybe the real reason I loved that part was those cute toddlers in the wheelbarrow!) and I thought it was a clever trick to use a blue sheet to indicate water during the ship scenes during the era of exploration. There isn’t time for every single historical event, and I was amused at how some historical moments just got 2-3 seconds (the Reformation, and indeed all of Chinese history!). There was excellent cinematography and energetic editing throughout. King George was particularly well performed. I loved the goofiness of seeing Napoleon on a rocking horse, and the reference to the theme of “Little House on the Prairie” during the “expansion” section was a fun subtle reference. The switch to black-and-white for World War I, with its dreary trenches, machine guns, and grenades was a smart touch. This whole movie was a delight to watch from front to back, and I loved the wonderful credits sequence in which we see the whole family together at the end! Super impressive!
