PLAYING POST OFFICE
Lucille Ball and the Mail
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball gets the mail at the end of the driveway to her Chatsworth home, Desilu Ranch, circa 1940s.
“Lady, we don’t mind the rain, or the snow, or the sleet. It’s kooks like you that drive us nuts!” ~ Postmaster, “Lucy & The Missing Stamp” (1964)
Tumblr media
In 1943, Lucille Ball performed on the radio program “Mail Call,” a show only available to the troops overseas and not broadcast stateside. The term mail call was used when soldiers would get letters from home.
“My Favorite Husband” (1948-1951)
Tumblr media
Jay Novello played Mr. Negley the mailman on several episodes of Lucille Ball’s radio series.
In “The Sleigh Ride” (1949) Mr. Negley uses his mail delivery motorcycle to pull the holiday sleigh, but the load proves to much and the milkman’s old horse is pressed into service instead.
In “Liz The Matchmaker” (1949) Katie the maid decides that after three years of dating Mr. Negley that their relationship is not going anywhere, so she enlists Liz’s help.
Tumblr media
In “Mother-in-Law” (1949), Liz (Lucille Ball) correctly assumes that Katie the maid (Ruth Perrot) is so happy because Mr. Negley the mailman has flirted with her. Katie says they were “playing post office.”
KATIE: “He’s so creative. He said my mouth was like a postage stamp. Then he canceled me!”
Katie hands her the mail and Liz finds a letter from her mother-in-law.
LIZ: “No one else addresses a letter ‘To George Cooper Only’ marked personal all over and then seals it with Scotch tape!”
Tumblr media
“George Attends a Teenage Dance” (1948) ~ George and Liz chaperone a high school dance and we learn that ‘playing post office’ is a game, not just an institution. Post Office is a kissing party game played at teenage parties. It has been referred to in popular culture since at least the 1880s. The group playing is divided into two groups. One group goes into another room which is called "the post office”. To play, each person from the outer group individually visits “the post office”. Once there, they get a kiss from everyone in the room. They then return to the original room.
Tumblr media
The game of Post Office is mentioned again in “George Needs A Raise” (1949). In "The Charm School" (1954), Ethel mentions that Fred suggested they play Post Office the previous night when a beautiful guest arrived at their dinner party. In “Kiddie Parties Inc.” (1963) Vivian says she played Post Office when she was younger.
JIMMY: “Do you know how to play Post Office, Mrs. Cugat?” LIZ: “Know how? When I was your age they used to call me Jim Farley.”
James Farley was the the 53rd US Postmaster General from 1933 to 1940.
Tumblr media
Hans Conried played a weary mailman in “Valentine’s Day” (1949).
LIZ: “Are you picking up the mail?”
MAILMAN (sarcastically): “No, I’m a Confederate soldier and these are messages for General Lee.”
In 1949, General Robert E. Lee’s face was on a postage stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
"I Love Lucy” (1951-1960)
Tumblr media
“Drafted” (1951) ~ A letter from Fort Dix makes Lucy and Ethel think that Fred and Ricky have been drafted. The flap of the envelope is open, so Lucy reasons it is okay to read Ricky’s mail. Re-sealing Ricky’s letter from Fort Dix, Ethel says “I’ve had lots of practice at this.”
Tumblr media
Early in the episode, Lucy gets a postcard from the Bishers, who are on vacation in Florida. The comedy trope of the landlord / landlady (Ethel) reading the tenants’ mail to keep up on gossip is used here!
Tumblr media
The premise of a letter from the Draft Board will be used again on “The Lucy Show” in 1966, when Lou C. Carmichael is mistakenly called up.
Tumblr media
Unmailed and unfinished love letters to a former boyfriend haunt Lucy in “Lucy Changes Her Mind” (1953). When Ricky insists she finish everything she starts, she finishes the love letter to Tom Henderson and it mistakenly gets mailed!
Tumblr media
The “I Love Lucy” Comics created a similar storyline for an issue in 1954.
Tumblr media
Mailed postcards once again cause trouble in “Fan Magazine Interview” (1954) when a publicity scheme for the Tropicana maquerades as a ‘date’ with Ricky Ricardo. When Lucy finds one of the postcards, she naturally thinks Ricky is cheating!  She tracks down the woman: Minnie Finch (Kathryn Card).
Tumblr media
Turns out Minnie’s neighbors (Elvia Allman and Sunny Boyne) got similar invitations for ‘dates’ in the mail.
Tumblr media
“The Passports” (1955) ~ Lucy has trouble proving where and when she was born. At the end, Lucy gets a letter from her mother enclosing her birth certificate and saving the day.
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Visits” (1954) ~ Lucy gets a very wordy letter from her mother to explain the presence of Ernie Ford. Naturally the letter comes after Ernie has arrived.
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Hangs On” (1954) ~ Lucy discovers an unmailed letter from Ernie to his Ma in Bent Fork, causing Lucy and Ricky to feel guilty for scheming to get rid of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets into Pictures” (1955) ~ Ricky discovers a postcard Lucy’s written to  Lillian Appleby, fibbing about having a part in a picture. In a rare blooper, Ricky calls Mrs. Appleby Lillian instead of Carolyn. She was only named Lillian in her very first appearance.
Tumblr media
To apply the stamp, Lucy borrows Ricky’s tongue.
LUCY: “I've stamped so many cards, I'm all out of lick. Now, remember, don't read them.” RICKY: “Why not?” LUCY: “Because it's not nice to read other people's postcards.” RICKY: “Well, you and Ethel do it at home all the time.” LUCY: “Not until after they're mailed. It's illegal to read them before they're postmarked.”
Tumblr media
“Don Juan is Shelved” (1955) ~ To save Ricky’s picture, Lucy decides to flood the studio with fan mail. She organizes an assembly line in her hotel room to churn out 500 handwritten and stamped fan letters.
Tumblr media
“Paris at Last!” (1956) ~ Lucy goes to the American Express Office to change some money into Francs. Fred is in charge of collecting the mail, which has been forwarded to the American Express Offices along their tour route.
Tumblr media
Although primarily known for their credit cards today, in the 1950s American Express was an international banking company that issued travelers checks and was a trusted source of currency exchange. Their international offices were equipped with reading and writing rooms which offered the latest American newspapers and magazines. They also maintained a post office where clients’ letters could be forwarded.
Tumblr media
“Return Home from Europe” (1956) ~ Packing to sail home, a surprise in the mail changes their plans.
RICKY: “Hey, did they have any mail for us at American 'Spress?” LUCY: “Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Oh, a letter from Mother! Here's a telegram for you.” RICKY: “How do you like that? A telegram and she forwards it in the regular mail. It takes three weeks to get here!”
It turns out to be very important - an offer to play at the Roxy in New York - staring immediately!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Raises Chickens” (1957) ~ After placing an ad for someone to help with the egg business, Ricky finds a reply in the mailbox - from Fred!. He put the letter in the box himself, saving the cost of a stamp and replacing it with an Easter Seal!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets the Mustache” (1959) ~ Lucy opens a letter from Ricky’s Uncle Alberto in Cuba, then must figure out a way to get it back into the envelope before Ricky comes home!  She employs a knitting needle using a technique she saw on television.
STAMPS
Tumblr media
MAILBOXES
Tumblr media
“The Lucy Show” (1962-1968)
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Missing Stamp” (1964) ~ Lucy mistakenly uses a collectible stamp on an envelope she’s mailed then realizes its value.
Tumblr media
She tracks it to the post office where she does everything she can to retrieve it.
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran plays the postman. Robert S. Carson plays the postmaster.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes Into Politics” (1964) ~ As volunteers working on Mr. Mooney’s campaign for Danfield Comptroller, Lucy and Viv are in charge of stamping hundreds of envelopes!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Caught Up in the Draft” (1966) ~ The mail that contains her draft notice is delievered by Joe the Postman (Sid Gould).
Tumblr media
Also in the mail is a letter from Lucy’s son, who is away at Military School. In probably the largest blooper in the history of “The Lucy Show,” the letter is signed “Jimmy Carmichael” instead of “Jerry Carmichael”.  It was Lucille Ball who insisted to the production people that it was Jimmy, remembering the actor’s name (Jimmy Garrett) and not the character’s!
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Bean Queen” (1966) ~ At the office, Mr. Mooney notes that it costs five cents postage to send a letter. This rate went into effect in 1963, rising a penny, and went up again another penny in 1968.
“Here’s Lucy” (1968-1974)
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Working Daughter” (1968) ~ When Kim must have her social security number to get a job at a boutique, Lucy confuses it for the Zip Code!  The US Post Office introduced Zip Codes on July 1, 1963.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Protects Her Job” (1969) ~ Kim disguises herself as new secretary -  gum-chewing Shirley Shoppenhauer. She returns from the post office with 500 postage stamps. Unfortunately for Harry, they are all balled up in a bunch and jammed into her purse.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (1970) ~ Lucy gets a letter from her old friend Viv, saying that she’s coming to visit. Naturally, the letter arrives moments before Viv walks through the door!

Giselle, Birmingham Royal Ballet © Dasa Wharton 2019
There’s a spate of Giselles about at the moment, radical reinventions of the 1841 ballet from Akram Khan for English National Ballet, and South African choreographer Dada Masilo, drawing on modern class and gender politics to rewrite the Romantic heroine for our times.
But if you prefer your Giselle with original spirit intact, then Birmingham Royal Ballet is the one for you. – Guardian

An audience’s full enjoyment of Giselle depends on a few things beyond, of course, good dancing: how involved you get with the story, and how atmospheric, spooky even, the production makes Act II.
Birmingham Royal Ballet’s 1999 production triumphs on all counts. The work of the company’s former veteran director David Bintley and its Russian former prima ballerina Galina Samsova, it remains faithful to Petipa’s 19th-century choreography and removes subsequent additions. In doing so, it provides new clarity and focus. – Teresa Guerreiro, CultureWhisper

David Bintley and Galina Samsova unveiled their production in 1999 (choreography by Petipa after Coralli and Perrot with additional choreography by Bintley), but this was the first time it had been performed in the capital for almost 20 years. It’s a beautifully shaped drama, one in which grace and generosity bring the story home to maximum effect. Love, betrayal and forgiveness — the emotions are as real as the charming dances of the first half and the poetic majesty of the second… The whole BRB company shone.  The Times

24 Giselle, Birmingham Royal Ballet, with Delia Mathews © Dasa Wharton 2019
This Giselle is not flashy, not trying to be relevant or shake things up. And it doesn’t have the emotional transcendence of the great Giselles. But it is danced with diligence, attention and sensitivity. It may not go down in history, but it brings history alive in the present. – Guardian

31 Giselle, Birmingham Royal Ballet, with Delia Mathews, Tyrone Singleton © Dasa Wharton 2019
The production was originally created in 1999 with designs by Hayden Griffin. Most of these are wonderfully effective; in the first act we have a detailed medieval Rhineland village, with the vines growing on the hillside and a waterfall evoked in the distance. But there is the occasional lapse: the lurid costume for the Master of the Hunt almost induced giggles, like something from the dressing up box, and the white horse for Bathilde’s entrance is an unnecessary distraction. However, Griffin’s design for Act 2 redeems all, a stunning ruined gothic church where Giselle is buried in unhallowed ground. Everything comes together well here. Subtle lighting by Mark Jonathan provides atmospheric moonlight and finally dawn breaking through the crumbling windows. – DanceTabs

I was once scolded by a friend about seeing the same ballet so many times. Of course, one never sees the same performance of any ballet more than once, but I can never tire of Giselle. The more interpretations, the merrier for me; but – for tradition and clarity – few are ever likely to match this excellent production, which was developed with thoughtful purpose to enrich the whole genre of this ballet. – Graham Watts
Giselle, English National Ballet
Thanks to DVDs, broadcasts and ENB’s tireless touring, more than 300,000 people are thought to have seen this show – a giddy figure for a dance work that’s just three years old – and most critics showered it with superlatives too. – The Telegraph

This is a powerful and stunningly staged reimagining, set in our own times. Khan preserves the essential elements of love, betrayal, death, forgiveness — along with the presence of the supernatural — that are the stuff of the 19th-century original. But instead of the medieval peasants and aristocrats, the divided society that Khan depicts comprises “the outcasts”, dispossessed migrant garment-factory workers, of whom Giselle is one, and their heartless exploiters, the landlords.
That much is clear, though there are other matters in Khan and the dramaturge Ruth Little’s complex concept that require recourse to the programme notes. But in atmosphere and dance images, the work packs a big theatrical punch. – The Sunday Times

Tamara Rojo, who as ENB’s artistic director commissioned this work, danced Giselle in the opening cast of this revival: a characterisation combining defiance and vulnerability, and how eloquent she is even when standing still. James Streeter was her ardent, two-timing then remorseful lover, Albrecht, and Khan’s choreography in their duets is subtly affecting. Jeffrey Cirio, as Hilarion, was intense and athletic in a dramatically puzzling role; while Stina Quagebeur, as Myrtha, led her Wilis, the vengeful ghosts, with chilling force — one of the best things in the show. – The Sunday Times

Khan’s most inventive choreography is for the corps, full of machine-like syncopations, Karthak-inspired gestures and knotty interactions. His wilis – stuttering on pointe – are the stuff of nightmares. ENB’s corps danced with breathtaking energy.
It helps that Vincenzo Lamagna’s score is so brilliant, peppered with industrial, percussive power – although over-miked here – and cleverly referencing Adolphe Adam’s Romantic score. Gavin Sutherland and the English National Ballet Philharmonic balanced rhythmic drive in the ensembles with quiet eloquence in the duets. They should commit Lamagna’s to disc; I’d buy it. – BachTrack

It is no surprise to learn that Akram Khan’s Giselle is a sell out wherever it is performed. Not only is the ballet a global success, but it’s become English National Ballet’s signature piece. There is much to admire, most obviously, the choreography and dancing, but also the elements of collaboration, which make this such a rewarding experience. Tim Yip’s heavy-looking revolving wall, which separates the ‘outcasts’ from the ‘landlords’, is as much a part of the action as the figures it dominates. Vincenzo Lamagna’s haunting score and sound design, with its references to Adolf Adam’s original, poignantly draws the story with extraordinary clarity. Gavin Sutherland’s magnificent orchestration, alongside his conducting of English National Ballet Philharmonic is equally impressive. With Mark Henderson’s evocative lighting design and Ruth Little’s dramaturgy, it leaves you wanting for nothing. – DanceTabs

Certainly, there was, and still is, plenty to admire about it. It was a smart, tragically topical and entirely original idea of Khan and dramaturge Ruth Little’s to recast the doomed romance between the villager Giselle and the two-timing nobleman Albrecht (originally playing out in the Rhineland of the Middle Ages) as being between one of the rich “Landlords” and a member of a disfranchised community of migrant workers from a now-defunct branch of the garment industry. Similarly, Khan here deploys his signature Kathak/contemporary choreographic style (with added dashes of classical ballet) to constantly startling effect: by turns furiously aggressive, eye-poppingly amorous, and as mechanical-looking as an enormous industrial loom. – The Telegraph

BALL & THE BUTCHERS!
The Butchers & Meat Markets of the Lucyverse
Tumblr media
Before supermarkets and online ordering, consumers visited local buthers and meat markets to shop.  Here’s a look at the butchers of the Lucyverse!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball had a huge imagination when she was a child in Jamestown NY. In order to attempt to control her daughter, her mother made a deal with the local butcher for Lucy to run up and down the street between his shop and their home. It was in his butcher shop that Lucille first made her entertainment debut. In her autobiography, Ball shares details of her first performance on the butcher's counter. Lucy loved to dance and twirl for them, as well as giving her rendition of a jumping frog. She would stick her tongue out and croak. Customers would give her some pennies or a sweet treat to show their appreciation.
Tumblr media
In 1942 Lucille Ball was the subject of a newspaper article titled “Conversation in the Kitchen” by Susan Thrift. The article details how the wartime homemaker can save money and conserve resources.
“If you have a freezing unit in your refrigerator, you can buy meat for the week. You’ve probably learned that you can depend much on a reliable butcher and standard brands. For the rest, remember what your mother taught you about the purchase of meat:”
Tumblr media
“Valentine’s Day” (1949)
Katie the Maid (Ruth Perrot), is sweet on Mr. Dabney the butcher (Hans Conried), and Liz (Lucille Ball) offers to help. But when Liz's Valentine to her favorite husband gets switched with her check to pay the butcher's bill, Mr. Dabney gets the wrong idea.
Katie says she has a written a Valentine poem for Mr. Dabney the butcher. Liz calls him “old heavy thumbs”.
KATIE: “Some people may have better beef, but his liver’s good. And no one has oxtails and pig’s feet like him!”
Tumblr media
Mr. Dabney reads the Valentine aloud:
“If you’ll be mine, then I’ll be thyne. You set my heart a-quiver. Say you’ll be my Valentine, And send two pounds of liver.”
Tumblr media
Hans Conreid also played Mr. Dabney the butcher in “Overweight” (1949) where a dieting weigh-in is held at his butcher shop.
Tumblr media
Mr. Dabney returns in “Reminiscing” (1949), a re-dramatization of “Valentine’s Day” as part of a “My Favorite Husband” retrospective episode.
Tumblr media
When the "Valentine’s Day” script was made for television in 1952 in “Lucy Plays Cupid”, Mr. Dabney the butcher, played by Hans Conried, became Mr. Ritter, a grocer, played by Edward Everett Horton.
Tumblr media
“The Freezer” (1952)
Hoping to save money, Lucy and Ethel purchases a walk-in freezer from Ethel’s Uncle Oscar, a butcher.  When Lucy hears Ethel say that he has a “big cold chest,” Lucy drily replies, “Why don’t you knit him a sweater?”
Tumblr media
After buying the freezer, they buy the meat to fill it at 69 cents a pound. Lucy over-orders two sides of beef from Johnson’s Meat Packing, a wholesale butcher. Lucy tells Ricky that bacon costs 75 cents a pound. The girls end up ordering 700 pounds of meat for a total of $483!  Lucy immediately demands they take it back.
DELIVERY MAN: “Look, ladies, even if you defrosted it, pasted it back together and taught it to walk, I couldn’t take it back!”
Tumblr media
To shift some of the meat, Lucy and other stake out the local butcher shop, stashing the meat in a baby stroller.
LUCY (to a customer): “Are you interested in some high-class beef? Are you tired of paying high prices? Do you want a bargain? Tell you what I'm gonna do. I got sirloin, tenderloin T-bone, rump, pot roast, chuck roast, oxtail stump.”
Tumblr media
Fred Aldrich plays the butcher who is none too happy about Lucy and Ethel poaching his customers.
Tumblr media
A December 1952 Philip Morris cartoon ad starts with the butcher delivering a side of beef to Lucy and Ethel, inspired by “The Freezer”.
Tumblr media
“Together for Christmas” (1962)
The holiday episode opens with Lucy and Viv at the butcher shop, where Ernie the butcher (Joe Mell) is wrapping up Lucy’s Christmas turkey, even though Viv's family traditionally has a goose.
Tumblr media
Ernie the butcher jokingly suggests stuffing the turkey with a goose!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Plumber” (1964)
Lucy’s first talent discovery was made in Mr. Krause’s butcher shop when she saw his German Shepard Beauty “howl like the Beatles” when Mr. Krause (Tom G. Linder) played the harmonica.
Tumblr media
”Lucy and the Great Bank Robbery” (1964)
Reading The Danfield Tribune, Viv notes that Oscar the butcher has a special on rump roast. This may be a throwback to Ethel Mertz’s Uncle Oscar the butcher.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Her Maid” (1965)
When Lucy and Viv take jobs as maids for a wealthy philanthopist, they realize that they not only have to prepare and serve the meals, but they have to act as their own butcher, too!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Old Mansion” (1965)
A wrong number on the telephone keeps trying to reach Irving's Meat Market.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Mickey Rooney” (1966)
The backdrop for the Charlie Chaplin sketch features a sign for a market that has “Low Prices on Meat’s”.  The grammatically incorrect possessive apostrophe is particularly odd. By that logic, the episode should be titled “Lucy Meet’s Mickey Rooney”!
Tumblr media
“Someone’s on the Ski Lift with Dinah” (1971)
Harry feels entitled to approach Dinah Shore because his butcher’s cousin’s son’s best friend is engaged to her manicurist.
Tumblr media
“Mary Jane’s Boyfriend” (1974)
Mary Jane’s boyfriend of the title owns a meat market. His name is Walter Butley (Cliff Norton). Harry calls Walter “meathead” because when he walked in the door, Lucy had just plopped a package of ground round on his head.
Tumblr media
Possibly the most famous butcher on television was Sam Franklin, played by Allan Melvin on “The Brady Bunch.”  Desi Arnaz Jr. appeared on the show in 1970, although Melvin did not appear on that episode. Also, Eve Plumb (Jan Brady) played Lucy Carter’s niece on a 1972 episode of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Melvin appeared with Lucille Ball in a 1959 episode of “Sergeant Bilko” (aka “The Phil Silvers Show”) titled “Bilko and the Ape Man.” Melvin also appeared in several Desilu series: “Vacation Playhouse”, “The Danny Thomas Show,” “The Joey Bishop Show,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.,” “Mayberry R.F.D.”

Lucy Gets Her Maid
S3;E11 ~ November 30, 1964
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
To impress a local women's club, Lucy hires a maid.  But to afford a maid, she must take a job – as a maid!  When her new employer hosts a dinner party she recruits Viv to help out – only to have to serve dinner to the very women she is hoping to impress. A quick-change parade of international costumes is contrived to remain incognito.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) and Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) do not appear in this episode.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Kathleen Freeman (Miss Putnam) previously played the character of Kathleen, but is making the third of her appearances playing various other characters on the series.  Freeman was ‘born in a trunk’ to a family of vaudevillians. She made her stage debut at age two in her parents’ act. Equally at home on screen and stage, Freeman was appearing on Broadway in The Full Monty in 2001 when she died of lung cancer.
Freeman gets entrance and exit applause from the studio audience!

Norma Varden (Mrs. Van Vlack) last appeared with Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance in “The Ricardos Change Apartments” (ILL S2;E26) as Mrs. Benson, the weepy woman in apartment 3B who swapped apartments with Lucy and Ricky after her daughter got married and moved out. She is probably best known for playing Frau Schmidt, the somewhat circumspect housekeeper at the Von Trapp mansion in 1965′s The Sound Of Music. She first met Lucille Ball when she played Lady Maude in Fancy Pants in 1950.
Van Vlack is the surname of one of Lucille Ball's childhood friends, Marion Strong Van Vlack, who was also a character on several episodes of “I Love Lucy.”

The Danfield Art Society members are played by:
Jean Vachon making the fifth of her six appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all but this one uncredited.
Paula Ray making the first of her three appearances on the series. This is the only one where she gets screen credit.
Caryl Lincoln was one of Lucy’s friends from her Goldwyn Girl days. This is the fourth of her seven appearances on the series, often appearing with her husband, fellow extra Bert Stevens.  This is the only episode where she receives screen credit.
Luree Wiese makes her only appearance on “The Lucy Show” but will make a single appearance on “Here's Lucy” in 1970.

As a movie star and mother, Lucille Ball had a maid named Harriet McCain. She was employed by Lucy from the late 1940's until the 1980s. Because Harriet was a woman of color, Ball insisted that the elevators in her townhouse be integrated, a first for her neighborhood. When McCain was hospitalized before her death, Ball paid all her medical expenses.
Lucy says that the Danfield Art Society is the most prestigious club in town. This is the group’s first mention on the series.

Viv says she doesn't want to work that hard to become a member of an organization that is comprised solely of woman.  Now the YMCA, on the other hand....  Danfield's new YMCA was often mentioned during the first season, with scenes set there during “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (S1;E2).
Lucy figures it costs $3.00 for popcorn and candy at the movies.  Today, popcorn and candy can cost as much or more than the movie ticket itself.
Tumblr media
A maid will cost Lucy $40 a week. In today's money that would be a salary of $365.
Lucy mistakes the Social Register with Social Security.  The United States Social Security act was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935. In 1961, the early retirement age was lowered to 62 from 67 for reduced benefits.
Tumblr media
Mrs. Van Vlack decides to call Lucy 'Hilda,' after her former maid. Coincidentally, Verna Felton (who played Mrs. Porter, Lucy Ricardo's short-lived maid) played a character named Hilda on the radio show “December Bride” (1952) and its TV sequel “Pete and Gladys” (1960). On those shows, Hilda was the best friend to the main character – much like Ethel Mertz and Vivian Bagley.
Tumblr media
Hoping to impress the new maid, Lucy replaces all their Mickey Spillane detective paperbacks with encyclopedias.  Mickey Spillane (1918-2006) was an American crime novelist, whose stories often feature his signature detective character, Mike Hammer. More than 225 million copies of his books have sold internationally. In 1964 alone Spillane released four novels.
Miss Putnam asks Lucy whether there's a color TV in the kitchen. Viv says yes, “If we drag it in from the living room.”  Lucy replies that it is a “light beige walnut.” CBS was still airing “The Lucy Show” in black and white, despite it being filmed in color.
Miss Putnam gets a telephone call from Gladys Wentworth who gives her a stock market tip.
So they won't be recognized by the members of the Danfield Art Society, Lucy and Viv don a series of disguises to serve their 'international' dinner:
Tumblr media
Russian Borscht (actually Viv’s consommé with ketchup) - Lucy wears a napkin as a babushka and puts on a shawl.  She hums “The Song of the Volga Boatmen,” a traditional Russian folk song as she ladles out the soup.
Tumblr media
French Bread – Lucy makes a beret from a black pillow and ties a red checkered table cloth around her waist.  She sings “Frere Jacques” as she distributes the baguettes.
Tumblr media
Italian Antipasto – Viv makes an Italian chef's outfit from uniforms found in the kitchen closet, making a mustache from the fringe on a throw pillow. She sings “O Solo Mio” while presenting the platter.  The Neapolitan song was written by Giovanni Capurro and Eduardo di Capua in 1898.
Tumblr media
Spanish Wine – Lucy puts a lace curtain on her head and wraps herself in a lace tablecloth. Holding a bunch of parsley in front of her face, she sings “In a Little Spanish Town,” a song by Mabel Wayne, Sam M. Lewis, and Joe Young written in 1926.
Tumblr media
Turkish Shish-Ka-Bob – Viv wraps a pink and red silk scarf around her head and cinches a print table throw around her waist.  She hums "The Streets of Cairo, or the Poor Little Country Maid" (also known as “The Snake Charmer Song”) written by James Thornton in the late 19th century.  Vivian Vance gyrates her hips with her back to the camera, earning a few surprised gasps and laughs from the studio audience.
Tumblr media
Baked Alaska – Lucy puts a dust mop on her head and wears a powder blue fur jacket while Viv throws potato flakes in the air from the kitchen door.  She sings “Jingle Bells” - a song Ricky Ricardo called “Yingle Bells” on “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”  Ball and Vance sang the song on the long-lost Christmas episode of “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Colombian Coffee – Viv takes the same pink and red scarves and wraps them around her waist while putting a floral arrangement on her head like Carmen Miranda. She chants “Cha-cha-cha” as she serves the coffee.
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Hires a Maid” (ILL S2;E23) Lucy Ricardo hired Mrs. Porter, a maid who intimidates her and behaves more like the employer than the employee. Both maids dislike children, are overly concerned about their own meals, and demand to be addressed by their last names. As in 1953, Lucy ends up waiting on the maid, not the other way around.
Tumblr media
In “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E23) Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz go out of their way to please The Society Matrons League headed by Mrs. Pomerantz (Florence Bates, left) and Mrs. Pettibone (Ruth Perrot, right), a very close model for the Danfield Art Society, but much snootier. It was based on a similar organization on Lucille Ball’s radio show “My Favorite Husband.”
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo pretended to be a maid to impress Fred's vaudeville partner in “Mertz and Kurtz” (ILL S4;E2, right) while Ethel pretended to be a maid to impress Tallulah Bankhead in “The Celebrity Next Door,” a 1957 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Lucy buys Miss Putnam's lunch from the delicatessen and brings it home in a pink box.  This is one of the same cake boxes used in “Lucy's Contact Lenses” (S3;E10) from Hoffstedder's Bakery.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Her Maid” rates 5 Paper Hearts out of 5
