235 - The Upside of Anger

Every prestige actress overdue for an Oscar deserves her showcase, and after three Oscar nominations in under a decade, Joan Allen got hers written and directed by her The Contender costar Mike Binder. The Upside of Anger cast Allen as a mother of four whose husband suddenly abandons her, and she finds boozy solace with the former baseball player down the street. The actress earned raves for her all-out performance, along with Kevin Costner as her new lover and compatriot. But the film was a spring release and struggled to get arrested in the awards race, despite a Critics Choice nomination and regional critics wins, despite what is largely seen as an uncompetitive Best Actress field.

You sat alongside your two coworkers watching some of the kids practice for the pep rally. Neal Gamby and Lee Russell, your fellow Vice Principals. Only a few weeks back they had dragged you along for some harebrained scheme to get the new Principal, Dr. Belinda Brown, fired. Breaking into her home, resulting in Russell loosing it and burning her entire house down. You were in the thick of it with them now, no turning back.

Gamby and Lee argued back and forth about what the next plan was to ensure Belinda Brown was no more. You were halfway zoned out not much caring for their petty bickering.

“I can’t help both of you pussed out on me and ran,” Lee scoffed at Gamby. “You can’t be serious right now, what did you want us to go up in flames with the house?” Gamby rolled his eyes.

“That’s not what I’m talking about,” Lee began talking through his teeth, “I’m talking about how we were gonna highjack her car too, Gamby! Could’ve burnt that shit down right in the school parking lot!”

“I think burning her new house down was far enough, Lee,” you finally chimed in.

“Yeah, dumbass. Don’t you think we would’ve been caught then?!” Gamby leaned in.

“She has kids, Lee. We’ve already made them homeless,” you sat up straight rolling your shoulders.

“You two are no fun!” Lee rolled his eyes, “Too invested in her personal life and shit. I don’t give a fuck about her! Neither should you, little miss sensitive.”

“That’s rich coming from someone with a detailed binder on every single faculty member in this building,” you stood up.

“Yeah!” Gamby pointed a finger in his face, “You’re the one who’s invested!”

“Shut the fuck up, Gamby,” Lee scrunched his face up at him. Lee’s eyes followed you as you walked down the bleachers.

“Where the fuck are you goin’, prissy pants?” Lee stood up behind you.

“Anywhere where I don’t have to hear your dumbass complain,” you turned around and threw your arms up.

“You always are the first one to back out on anything! Can’t even commit to a conversation with us,” Lee crossed his arms.

“Ooo a lovers quarrel,” Gamby teased.

“Shut Up, Gamby!” You both spoke together.

Lee began walking down the bleachers towards you. This just pissed you off worse.

It had almost always been like this with you and Lee. Small bickerings that were normally wrapped up with some flirting. All your coworkers constantly teased you both about fighting like an old married couple. Lee was different when you were alone. Staying late to help you with some paperwork that you could’ve done yourself, deeply complimenting you, always making an excuse to invite you into his office or himself into yours, lingering touches between you. Things had changed since Dr. Brown joined the faculty. Lee was sassier than ever. No longer willing to be any form of helpful, just hanging around throwing off-hand insults towards anyone and everyone. It had been growing old. You were sick of constant negativity pouring from him.

You headed down the stairs of the bleachers walking as fast as you could away from him.

“What’s the matter with you?” Lee rushed behind you, his hard steps echoing on the metal stairs. You ignored him, continuing forward. “I thought this was like our thing! Just some back and forth, what’s the big deal?” Lee scoffed.

“I’m not in the mood for this today, Lee,” you rolled your eyes refusing to look back at him. He was hot on your heals.

“What are you on your period or something?” Lee joked.

That was it. That sent you over the edge.

"Oh, sweet God, Lee! You're being a fucking asshole!" You stormed off into the nearby woods. The area in which old school supplies got dumped, also where Lee often took his smoke break.

"Me the asshole? You're the one actin' like a royal bitch right now!" Lee followed closely behind you.

That struck a nerve.

"What the fuck did you just say?"

Lee stood before you, hands on his hips, mouth hanging awkwardly open and eyes wide. He stammered slightly shaking his head.

"Nothing," he threw his hands up doing a circle step.

"No- Go ahead, Russell. Since you want to be so brave, tell me what you said!"

"You're the one that called me an asshole," he mumbled.

"Because you are an asshole! That's all you've ever been and all you'll ever be! A self obsessed, egotistical asshole!" You grunted as you spun around, leaning your arm against a tree.

"Oh, now look whose name callin'!" Lee stomped.

"You act all sweet and friendly to the staff, then do everything in your power to stab them in the back. Laughing and jokin' at the lunch table, pretending to be one of them. Well you aren't! You're a fucking psychopath who loves to pull everyone down with him! You're a sicko with a power trip, Russell!"

Lee scoffed at you, crossing his arms and rolling his eyes.

"FUCK YOU, LEE RUSSELL!" You got into his face pointing at him.

Lee cocked his head to the side. His hands found both sides of your face, crashing his lips into yours. You were stunned and extremely aroused. You sunk into the kiss full force, your body melting into Lee's grasp.

"You've got a dirty mouth on you, Ms. L/N," Lee flashed a toothy grin at you.

"You have no idea," you chuckled to yourself.

"Fuck, me. I like the sound of that," he pressed his lips back into yours, backing you into the tree you had leaned on prior. You exchanged spit as your tongues tussled, sloppy kissing being shared. Lee pulled you away from the tree, escorting you over to the mattress on the ground. A little gross, but you could not care right now. "Let's hurry things along a little, I've got an evaluation in an hour," Lee helped you onto the mattress, crawling on top of you. A prominent tent pitched in his tight khakis. "You really know how to make a girl feel special, dontcha Russell?"

"Oh, shut up," Lee kissed your lips. He ran a hand down your body, sliding under your skirt, finding your clothed core. His fingers began making circles against your sensitive nub. Your hips jolted forward at the sudden friction. Your eyes shot up to him. "Did you think I was gonna be the only one getting off here?" Lee looked at you with a cocky grin. You ran both hands up his body, tugging him down by his tie.

"Fuck me, Lee," you fluttered your eyes at him.

"Don't have to ask me twice, sweetheart," Lee began pulling himself from his pants. You shimmied your panties down your legs, cool air hit your soaking core. “Goddamn right I am. Make sure every time you sit down you remember what happened out here,” Lee laughed, standing up and reaching his hand out to you. You took it, he pulled you to your feet. Your chest was flush against his, you looked up at him. You pressed a kiss to his lips quickly. You saw a slight pink hue rise on his cheeks. Lee’s hands were on your hips, heavy brown eyes staring into yours. A faint smile painted his face.

The bell rang in the distance.

Lee’s eyes shot up to the school behind you. “Uh— Guess we outta get back to work,” he placed a tiny peck on your cheek. You smiled as he walked ahead of you, one of his hands reaching behind him for yours. You intertwined fingers with him, getting a satisfied look over his shoulder. He led you out of the trees, the field that was previously full of loud cheering students was now empty. No one was outside. At least, that’s what you thought. Lee spun around, planting another kiss on your lips. A goofy grin painting his face.

“RUSSELL!”

You both jumped slightly hearing Neal Gamby’s voice echoing through the air.

“Jesus Christ,” Lee sighed as he turned around to face him.

“What the fuck were you guys doing out there? You know we have to monitor the halls during class changes! Plus you guys forced me to have ‘small talk’ with Bitch Brown!” Gamby folded his arms over his chest.

“No need to get your nutsack twisted, Gamby. We just needed to plan out our next attack,” Lee flicked him in the shoulder walking past him to the school.

“I’m supposed to be involved in all conversations about this!” Gamby protested.

You laughed and rolled your eyes, following closely behind Lee. Turning to make a face at Gamby as you headed inside.

“You guys suck,” Gamby mumbled as he hustled to catch up with you.

You and Lee walked side by side inside the building, occasionally bumping into each other. Exchanging small smiles back and forth. Continuously grazing hands, longing to interlock fingers again.

Save that for another time.

“So you signed up?” Coco asked Pyrrha as they entered the conference room that had been indicated on the message they received from Professor Goodwitch. ‘What changed your mind? I thought you were just going to observe the fitness tests?”

“I was, but…”

“But?”

“I’m bored with the constant combat training, and remedial lessons… just exercising and with two individuals that aren’t fawning over me… was refreshing.”

“I can see it.”

“Why are you here?”

“Fashion and style… plus it will keep me out of detention…”

“Detention?”

“I would rather not talk about it.” Coco sighed, “It was a screw-up, but then I met those two… they need serious help, it’s like they don’t know anything about being a young woman and…”

“And?” Pyrrha asked as she took a seat.

“They’re so… CUTE!” Coco squealed, “Especially that Joan… oh… The girl next door… I would…OW!”

Coco rubbed her forward while shooting Pyrrah, a glare that only received a head shake from the red-head.

“That was inappropriate and unprofessional, Coco.”

“But you have…” the opening of the door drew the pair’s attention to the newest addition to the gathering. “You!”

“Why are you here?” Russel screeched in panic, clutching a binder to his chest as he pressed his back to the wall behind him.

“I know why I’m here, not why a little turd like you would be…”

“That is enough, Ms Adel.” the stern voice of Glynda Goodwitch sent a shiver down all three of the student’s spines. “I invited Mr Thrush to this meeting as he, like yourself and Ms Nikos, will be assisting in this special program.”

“How can…”

“Sit down, Ms Adel.” Glydna stepped aside to let another middle-aged woman, as she kept Coco directly in her sights. “I will not tell you again. Mr Thrush please take a seat.”

Coco relented and took her seat next to Pyrrha, but continued to glare as Russel found a chair as far away from the Fashionista as he could. Glynda remained standing as the dark haired woman who had entered with her also took a seat, placing a thick leather-bound portfolio on the table in front of her.

“Now, you have all be invited here because you have expressed interest in assisting Beacon with its new Public Relations Incentive.” Glynda regarded her three students, “I will make this point once. You WILL be professional, any personal issues you have will not be allowed to interfere with this project, so if you CANNOT do that… I suggest you leave now.”

Glynda waited, watching, reading body language. Mr Thrush was obviously anxious and scared, considering who was across the table from him. Ms Nikos was calm and collected, but Ms Adel. She would be the problem considering her aggressive stance.

“I feel like I have to repeat myself… which I am not want to do.” Glynda turned the full force of her stern green eyes upon Coco, causing her aggressive body language to whither instantly. “This is an important project for Beacon, it is also a pilot project, so people will be watching it closely… I will not tolerate any juvenile displays. Your personal issue will stay… outside this project. Understood?”

“Yes professor” the three students answered.

“Good.” Glynda took her own seat before continuing. “The individual to my left is Piper Hamelin. She has been contracted to be Joan and Carla’s agent, as well as their choreographer and vocal coach. She has also been given full control of this project… so from now on you will answer to her. Ms Hamelin.”

“Thank you professor.” Piper studied the three students, her pink eyes framed behind a set of black wire rimmed glasses. She pursed her light red tinted lips, before speaking. “I have been made aware that you three have… volunteered for this project and that you according to professor Goodwitch are to be considered competent help. I however, will have the final say… as such, you are all to consider yourselves under probation… until I decided otherwise.”

Piper opened her portfolio and shuffled some papers, before returning her attention to the trio.

“Ms Nikos, I know of your background and achievements, but that means nothing to me in regard to this project. You will focus on Joan and Carla’s general fitness, with a  focus on stamina.” Piper pulled out a sheet of paper and slid it over to Pyrrha. “This is an outline of the type of exercises I require to be worked into whatever routine you wish. Are you capable?”

“Yes, I am familiar with these exercises and see no issue incorporating them.” Pyrrha replied.

“Good, this” slides two more pages towards her, “Are a work plan that I need to fill out and file with me. The second is a meal guideline that I expect you to enforce, as you will also be required to monitor their caloric intake. You can decide what day of the week can be their ‘cheat’ day… other than that.”

“Okay… I can try, but I am a student, I can’t watch them every time they eat.” Pyrrha responded.

“Starting tomorrow they will be attending all meal times with you and your team, and the kitchen staff have been informed of this menu. You will just have to confirm they are eating from it, aside from their ‘cheat’ day.” Glynda informed the group.

“Okay, I guess I can do this. It’s not too different from my diet.”

“Good. Ms Adel,” Piper slid a set of papers to her, “I understand you are exceptional with fashion and style. I need their current style inventoried, along with accurate body measurements. After I have determined the style idols they will be, I will give you guidelines on what I will require for their public appearances.”

“The inventory is pretty simple. Everything they wear right now I picked out for them. The body measurements, “Coco clicked her tongue, “Are going to be a little difficult.”

“How so?” Piper asked.

“They are rather shy, and timid when it comes to their bodies.” Coco replied as she set the papers down before her. “It’s adorable really, but they have issues with anyone seeing them in anything but form hiding clothing.”

“I see. Then I will also require you to work on their self-confidence and self-image”

“That could be a tall order…” Coco sighed, “But they need a boost, they are very cut… I mean beautiful young women.”

“Cute?” Piper eyed Coco, causing the brunette to fidget.

“I have heard of some of your proclivities… I do not judge, but you will keep a professional distance. Neither of these girls, regardless of their orientation, need the distraction of a relationship at this juncture.”

“And… and if they initiate?” Coco stammered out.

“If they do… we will cross that bridge when or IF it happens.” Piper replied, “Mr Thrush, I understand you have brought some sample work?”

“Yes.” Russel gentle placed his binder on the table and pushed it over to Ms Hamelin. “This is everything I’ve ever written, lyrics and music.”

Piper opened the binder and flipped through it, nodding occasionally. There was a complete silence as for the next few minutes all Piper did was examine Russel’s portfolio. Eventually she stopped, and gently closed the binder, returning it to Russel.

“Your talent surprises me. Not many can dabble in so many varied styles.” Piper gave Russel a smile. “Once I have determined what style they shall follow, I believe you will be capable of providing what I need.”

“Are you satisfied?” Glydna asked.

“Not yet. Everyone up, let’s go.”

“Go?” Coco asked as she, like Pyrrha and Russel, rose from their seats.

“Yes, we need to meet with our Clients. They need to know who is on their support team.” Piper Hamelin informed the trio. “Professor Goodwitch if you please.”

22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?

I mostly use sticky notes to organize my thoughts about current projects. I write out a short outline with points I want to hit on and then once that outline becomes obsolete I usually compress it into the newer points I want to hit on in the edit. I have an outline somewhere for the chapter progression in love-punch, but most of my outlining happens inside my head or on a sticky note in general.

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

There's a scene in the sparrow by maria doria russell where the protagonist talks about feeling like he was assaulted by god that made me throw the book across the church I was reading it in and scream. I'll never read the book again, but that scene loops in my brain eternally.

Armament(s):

• M107 "Balaena Kai" Dual Beam Cannon An improved version of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom's M100 "Balaena" Plasma Beam Cannons, the "Balaena Kai" Dual Beam Cannon is mounted in the backpack and is useable in mobile suit and mobile armor mode. In mobile suit mode, the dual beam cannon can be used to engage enemy units after flipping upwards, or all the way forward. In mobile armor mode, the dual beam cannon is flipped forward, and can be used to shoot enemy units on the water when Abyss swims close to the surface.The beam cannons are not used in the water as the environment reduces their power.

• M68 Dual Cannon Another long range weapon of the Abyss are a pair of M68 Dual Cannon, these shell-firing cannons are located in the lower end of the shoulder-mounted binders and can be used for underwater combat. The cannons are usable in both mobile suit mode and mobile armor mode, and are capable of destroying most mobile suits with one shot.

• MA-X223E 3-barrel Beam Cannon Abyss is equipped with two sets of MA-X223E 3-barrel Beam Cannons, one set in each shoulder-mounted binders. These beam cannons are very effective in engaging multiple targets, but since they are located in the underside of the binders, they cannot be used while in mobile armor mode.

• MGX-2235 "Callidus" Multi-phase Beam Cannon The MGX-2235 "Callidus" Multi-phase Beam Cannon is mounted in the Abyss's chest and is its most powerful ranged beam weaponry, but it can only be used in mobile suit mode.

• MMI-GAU1717 12.5mm CIWS A CIWS gun mounted below the suit's forehead camera, it is used for engaging light targets, missile interception and surpressive fire. Usable only in mobile suit mode.

• MMI-GAU25A 20mm CIWS Abyss also mounts two MMI-GAU25A 20mm CIWS guns in its chest to shoot down incoming missiles or enemy units at close range. Usable only in mobile suit mode.

• MMI-TT101 Mk9 High-speed Guided Torpedo These torpedoes serve as the main weapon of the suit's mobile armor mode and are fired from the four launchers that are mounted in the upper end of the shoulder-mounted binders. Can be used in MS mode as well.

• MX-RQB516 Beam Lance Since the Abyss was designed for aquatic combat, it is the only Second Stage series MS that isn't armed with beam sabers. Instead, Abyss is armed with a beam lance for melee combat. The beam lance can generate a small beam blade at the end and can also be used for underwater combat as it also has a sharp physical blade.

• Variable Phase Shift armor Like the other Second Stage Series suits the Abyss has VPS armor, this technology is more energy efficient and capable of altering its strength, as well as color in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.

Did you ever use a binder before undergoing top surgery? And did you ever take HRT?

I never really used a binder. Luckily, I wasn't blessed by mother nature when it came to my tits, so I rarely had an issue with not wearing a binder. I could even walk around shirtless without much dysphoria.

As for testosterone- yeah I did take it. My experience helped me give 2D his shots when he was comatose. The lad eventually switched to gel, I stayed with shots, but my hands got quite shaky over the years so I needed more and more help. Nowadays, Russel helps me with the injections and I couldn't be more grateful that he does.
