A shy penguin wins New Zealand’s bird election after campaign filled with memes and tattoos

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — It’s noisy, smelly, shy — and New Zealand’s bird of the year.

The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, won the country’s fiercely fought avian election on Monday, offering hope to supporters of the endangered bird that recognition from its victory might prompt a revival of the species.

It followed a campaign for the annual Bird of the Year vote that was absent the foreign interference scandals and cheating controversies of past polls. Instead, campaigners in the long-running contest sought votes in the usual ways — launching meme wars, seeking celebrity endorsements and even getting tattoos to prove their loyalty.

More than 50,000 people voted in the poll, 300,000 fewer than last year, when British late night host John Oliver drove a humorous campaign for the pūteketeke -- a “deeply weird bird” which eats and vomits its own feathers – securing a landslide win.

This year, the number of votes cast represented 10% of the population of New Zealand — a country where nature is never far away and where a love of native birds is instilled in citizens from childhood.

“Birds are our heart and soul,” said Emma Rawson, who campaigned for the fourth-placed ruru, a small brown owl with a melancholic call. New Zealand’s only native mammals are bats and marine species, putting the spotlight on its birds, which are beloved — and often rare.

This year’s victor, the hoiho — its name means “noise shouter” in the Māori language — is a shy bird thought to be the world’s rarest penguin. Only found on New Zealand’s South and Chatham islands — and on subantarctic islands south of the country — numbers have dropped perilously by 78% in the past 15 years.

“This spotlight couldn’t have come at a better time. This iconic penguin is disappearing from mainland Aotearoa before our eyes,” Nicola Toki, chief executive of Forest & Bird — the organization that runs the poll — said in a press release, using the Māori name for New Zealand. Despite intensive conservation efforts on land, she said, the birds drown in nets and sea and can’t find enough food.

“The campaign has raised awareness, but what we really hope is that it brings tangible support,” said Charlie Buchan, campaign manager for the hoiho. But while the bird is struggling, it attracted a star billing in the poll: celebrity endorsements flew in from English zoologist Jane Goodall, host of the Amazing Race Phil Keoghan, and two former New Zealand prime ministers.

Aspiring bird campaign managers — this year ranging from power companies to high school students — submit applications to Forest & Bird for the posts. The hoiho bid was run by a collective of wildlife groups, a museum, a brewery and a rugby team in the city of Dunedin, where the bird is found on mainland New Zealand, making it the highest-powered campaign of the 2024 vote.

“I do feel like we were the scrappy underdog,” said Emily Bull, a spokesperson for the runner-up campaign, for the karure — a small, “goth” black robin only found on New Zealand’s Chatham Island.

The karure’s bid was directed by the students’ association at Victoria University of Wellington, prompting a fierce skirmish on the college campus when the student magazine staged an opposing campaign for the kororā, or little blue penguin.

The rivalry provoked a meme war and students in bird costumes. Several people got tattoos. When the magazine’s campaign secured endorsements of the city council and local zoo, Bull despaired for the black robin’s bid.

But the karure — which has performed a real-life comeback since the 1980s, with conservation efforts increasing the species from five birds to 250 — took second place overall.

This weekend as Rawson wrapped up her campaign for the ruru, she took her efforts directly to the people, courting votes at a local dog park. The veteran campaign manager who has directed the bids for other birds in past years was rewarded by the ruru placing fourth in the poll, her best ever result.

“I have not been in human political campaigning before,” said Rawson, who is drawn to the competition because of the funds and awareness it generates. The campaign struck a more sedate tone this year, she added.

“There’s been no international interference, even though that was actually a lot of fun,” she said, referring to Oliver’s high-profile campaign.

It was not the only controversy the election has seen. While anyone in the world can vote, Forest & Bird now requires electors to verify their ballots after foreign interference plagued the contest before. In 2018, Australian pranksters cast hundreds of fraudulent votes in favor of the shag.

The following year, Forest & Bird was forced to clarify that a flurry of votes from Russia appeared to be from legitimate bird-lovers.

While campaigns are fiercely competitive, managers described tactics more akin to pro wrestling — in which fights are scripted — than divisive political contests.

“Sometimes people want to make posts that are kind of like beefy with you and they’ll always message you and be like, hey, is it okay if I post this?” Bull said. “There is a really sweet community. It’s really wholesome.”

As mentioned on my main blog, I will be moving across continents soon and although this is hypothetically not a permanent move it will be for at least one year and potentially for multiple years. Elfdoll Ruru and Elfdoll Special K, both tan, both have slightly messed up/marked but still very beautiful original faceups (i might be able to get the marks off with magic eraser, i'll see. they're packed right now so i haven't tried.) i love these two dolls but i'm just doing NOTHING with either of them

i survived my first week of clinical teaching and my mentor is so awesome! she had me teach on friday and was like “you’re seriously a natural” & one of my students said i was the best teacher ever because we went on a field trip and i helped her learn to skate 🥹🥹

The idea that Fresh's parasite is still learning so right now it is just eating to develop and grow but over time it will learn to not take EVERYTHING and to also give back? that is great! and yesssss fresh is his own made boss monster hahah

the idea that geno dropped error off at school. with the message that he just needs to get things ready at their new place but they will make sure to write and while gneo is gone that fresh will be there for him.

only for error to come back after beign expelled to find an empty house. and he waits with the letter. he waits for DAYS for fresh to return. becuase there is no food or anything. just an empty house... so error just leaves. because he figures that is what this means. he will find geno and surprising him there. seeing as fresh clearly doens't love him anymore. and geno will realise that something is miss because error isn't sending letters!

only for neither fresh or geno to come looking for him. Error isn't dumb. he knows what that means. fine. if they don't want him he doesn't want them! (that is a lie. he misses both every single day)

Then fresh comes home late on a friday night. already apologising "sorry Ruru i am so late! I was way further out with the animals but come look what i tamed!!" only to see a dark empty house. error's stuff barely unpakced. fresh figures he went to sleep and checks his bed but finds it empty. fresh is starting to panic and then finds the letter of error being expiled and if either fresh or geno wants to challenge it they need to get back to the school before friday morning. the letter dates back to monday.

Fresh realises he fucked up so badly. where is his little brother?

(geno 100% told fresh to STAY HOME. yes he knows it sucks but PLEASE stay home in case the school contacts him or needs something. Fresh hadn't taken that serious (after all. geno always bailed both him and error out of trouble). this is probbaly why fresh acted as if nothing was wrong for the longest of times as he searched for error. only for moving day to get very close and him finally having to admit what happened adn that he can't find error anywhere. Geno is FURIOUS. he asked frehs ONE thing. and he couldn't do that!)

fresh is going to keep searching. not caring that he is risking everyone he meets and gets into contact with. he just wants to find even the tiniest mark of his little brother. if only so they can have a propper burial.

Fresh heard about something powerful in the forest and while he was weak he had a thing for animals. so maybe this could be his thing? he could tame this thing and be powerful like his older and younger brother! he could be this powerful tamer or something!

Only for it to crawl into his skull and bind itself to him. for fresh to feel a secondary set of emotions.

Geno spend so long and so much time researching for information to help fresh. to save him from his own stupid mistake. again. only to find out. there is no way to fix this. it is too late.

so fresh got everything he wanted! He became more powerful. he got powers. he is a boss monster now!

The drawback?

The fact that whenever his little brother is near that THING in his skull sees him as a source of food.

because why else would fresh reject his little brother's (and older brother but again he has no choice as you said) hugs? the parasite is too young to be able to truly see the differences or feels fresh's preferances on what it can and cant eat. and a young monster with powerful, potent ad uncontrolled magic? that is straight up a feast. and error keeps going to fresh because they always used to play game and hug and hold hands. fresh just. doesn't anymore. fresh can't allow him to be too close. geno is saver. geno knows his magic and can control it. but error? too young t have any true control? Fresh can't risk being near him.

Fresh got what he wanted. downside is he can't even hug his own family anymore.

Fresh TRIES to show he loves them in other way. bring back cool beasts to pet and let error ride them. bring gifts and cool things. get money so geno has to work less.

Fresh can't hug his own brothers anymore. because the thing in his skull just sees them as a source of food. and while geno can force him to accept the affection error cant.

Whole other thought on why error dislikes touch in this. because of his magic. it is too potent and as you said explosive. what if when error was younger it used to hurt him? like when error touched people or soemtimes even things his magic would see it as THREAT and just blast out slightly (like a shock or some fire) but it used to also hurt error himself. He could have all kinds of scars on his little hands from his own magic. so error wanting to risk the harm to hold and hug you? it is a BIG FUCKING DEAL. and it is why it hurt error even more that fresh rejected that. because fresh would know this.

over time it happened less and less but it is why both fresh and geno ask him for permission to hug him. to hold him. because error needed to check his own magic to see if it was okay and it served as a warning as well. to prepare him.

over time it didn't happen but error still associates touch with hurt because of that.

(and yes error misread every single cue but can you blame him he is baby)

I think my brain should ruminate on the important characters but for some odd reason I'm staring at an unimportant side character and nodding in interest to myself. 😌

Kaedy, Ruru and Rikako hanged out last Monday!

Everything started when Kaedy and Ruru was talking in the scenary’s wings during the Hello!Concerts, and Ruru find out that Kaedy and her go alone to karaoke , so they wanted to go with someone! Also Rikako invited Ruru and thus everything began.

I remember entering the year of 2019 on a blank space, still unsure how I will start over or when can I completely recover. At the back of my mind I know I’d be able to secure a job soon, reignite myself in helping people that is creatively and artistically, and be able to move forward. But the process of it and the word “how” seems questionable and doubtful, the “what if’s” are creeping, and the “repeating the same mistakes” thoughts are turning into nightmares.

Time may be my constant adversary ever since, but fate has become my new bff. Understanding fate on the other hand, oh well, I’m still getting there. Its like this, I’m seeing a ball coming at me, I know its gonna hit me real soon, whether I saw it still from afar or already a few steps away from me, I can guess if it will hit me hard or softly, or maybe I can dodge it, or hit it or better yet, catch it with my both hands and own it. Understanding why in the first place it is coming at me or maybe at someone else, makes it more, should I say, interesting. I’d like to keep it positive and not use the word complicated.

Still, I cannot remain stuck and bored. I know I’ll make it through, the future is both exciting and daunting. My mantra and tattoo that says “Remember Who You Are” has never been empowering, right at that very moment.

Friends, family and faith remains, which I’m always thankful for. There is still good on this world that I deserve even though I would not ask for it. In an instant the moments went back to same degree of craziness just like before, the year went on as busy as it could be, my anxiety checked and my sanity has well improved.

New work means new colleagues, new team, new business partners, new strategies. A fresh start means a whole new way of making things right, being a better version. Being with PayPal helped me embrace that it is not just Diversity and Inclusion, it is also having the sense of Belongingness — I know I’m part of it and I know I’m valued, I don’t have to question my purpose this time, which I’m very thankful. My new team is a breath of fresh air, dedicated and talented individuals who are all in for fun and relationships, so as the leadership team that I’m with which I feel blessed that we connect and work together as One Team.

Another great thing to happen was the business trip to Dublin, Ireland, it was such a wonderful act of our business partners to invest on us new leaders and establish better connections and collaborations. We’ve met with 15+ PayPal leaders from Dublin and Dundalk and they’ve provided learnings that were tremendously helpful and of course the side trips were a bonus!

  Co-leading an Engagement Team, which was then called CIP MNL Fun@Work Team, and working with people while injecting fun and engagement has always been a strength and something close to my heart. It felt like more of a fun responsibility than a regular task. I also got the chance to propose and spearhead the Performing Arts Club which is called The Elites, it will highlight the employee’s talents on performing and I’m actually excited to work with a new set of passionate individuals.

Recognizing the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia(IDAHOT) last May 17 with our Ride with Pride presentation and winning the Express Yourself Catwalk was a highlight. I saw it as an opportunity to state a fact that no matter how groundbreaking it was the past two decades for the LGBTQ+ community, a lot of people still live in fear and hate and still a lot of people suffer from it.

One more thing, going back to one of my first love and that is performing through dance was such a reliever and I feel so blessed to be up on the stage once again and dance and become a different person altogether. It felt good to share the stage with other talents whom also worked hard to perform. Amazing shots by Alexander Lahorra.

A number of people that may be its time to let go. People do also change and not everyone can stay as a friend through out a lifetime. It has always been like that to be honest.

People live their life the way they want it, I live mine with a little more responsibility, to my own standards, duh. It pays to strive to do what is right, to make decisions that is humane, to live with little to no regret. To be thankful that I can experience happiness and gratitude on my own without being dependent on others can be of a big help.

Clueless, that’s me on Mondays, “I can’t take this shit no more baby” - also me on Mondays, and the first line of the song. This is the Monday song, it’s very chill, it’s jazzy, it’s a good way to start the week. Give it a listen.

Explicit auto-tune, in an alternative rock song, is that allowed? Apparently so. This song fucking rocks. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s officially allowed now. Isaac Lewis, man, breaking down barriers. Besides, the auto-tune only makes a very brief appearance at the end of the song.

This is my favorite song right now, if you listen to any song from this list make it this one. Lewis’s deep, calm, voice is the perfect contrast to the relatively fast paced drum beat. Besides the autotune he also has a great range, hitting the high notes when he needs to. There’s also a shredtastic guitar solo that isn’t annoyingly long. This song honestly has it all.

Wondering - Arlie

This song is addressing someone who has lost access to their cell phone, it’s pretty condescending but alas, it’s catchy. Arlie are certainly a band to watch right now, they did Bonnaroo for the first time this past June, and they’re currently doing a tour through the United States, even appearing with Mt. Joy for a few shows between September 25 and October 4.

If Harry Styles ever did a bunch of ecstasy and decided to make an alternative rock song it would sound like this. 

It definitely depends on your mood with song because it is extremely upbeat, and the lyrics kind of suck, but if you’re in a good mood this song is perfect. Listen to this on Friday after you finish your last class or get off work, it makes me feel good, i think you’ll feel the same way.
