Fans are remembering The Vivienne's most iconic moments

RuPaul’s Drag Race fans are celebrating The Vivienne by highlighting some of her most iconic moments – and there’s a lot of them – after her tragic death.

The drag superstar’s manager confirmed the “immensely sad” news on Monday (AEST) that Drag Race UK’s inaugural winner had away. They were just 32 years old.

The Vivienne won the first series of Drag Race UK in 2019. The performer went on to later appear in the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars in 2022.

After Viv’s death, tributes flooded in from the Drag Race community and fans across the world, including Michelle Visage and Aussies Courtney Act and Rhys Nicholson.

To remember The Vivienne and celebrate the drag queen’s career, fans are sharing some of Viv’s funniest and most iconic career moments from Drag Race and beyond.

Those moments include her hilarious Trump impression on Snatch Game – which Viv brought to Australia on tour just six months ago – and her All Stars 7 roast.

Another classic moment was The Vivienne, as Headmistress Nutmeg, making RuPaul laugh so hard he disrupted filming of Santa’s School for Girls during All Stars 7.

Outside of Drag Race, fans are also rewatching Viv’s hilarious YouTube videos with Drag Race sister Monét X Change for Netflix.

In one, the drag duo trained to be sex therapists and in another they took etiquette classes.

Viv’s manager Simon Jones announced The Vivienne, a.ka. James Lee Williams, had passed away.

“James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person,” Simon said.

“Their talent was immense and the light they brought to every room was astonishing. No one has ever made me laugh in my life as much as Viv did. Their comic genius and quick wit was like no other.”

Simon said The Vivienne’s career was “only just beginning” with recent roles in musical theatre over in the UK.

“In musical theatre Viv had found a space and career they loved, excelled and thrived in,” he said.

[The Controversy Surrounding RuPaul's Drag Race]

Now, let's talk about the buzz around RuPaul's Drag Race and the valid criticisms it's facing. While the show has done wonders in bringing drag culture to the forefront, it's important to address the issues surrounding its inclusivity, especially concerning transgender participants.

I came across an article that hit the nail on the head regarding RuPaul’s stance on transgender contestants. The comparison to Olympic athletes on steroids is not just inaccurate but also dismissive of the struggles and talents of trans women (Duffy 2018).

"Some argue that the world isn’t ready to see trans people on such a prominent platform. To that, I say, "Bye Felicia." Rather than sidelining a significant part of the queer community out of fear of polarizing opinions, this show could educate viewers about the lives of transgender individuals and offer them a chance to showcase their skills to a broader audience. In my eyes, talent is talent, whether trans or cis-gendered, and it should be celebrated (Banks 2020)."

As for someone like me who is passionate about equality and representation, I firmly believe that everyone, regardless of gender identity, should have the opportunity to showcase their skills and be celebrated for who they are. It's disappointing to see such exclusionary rhetoric from a figure so influential in the LGBTQ+ community.

It's crucial for platforms like RuPaul's Drag Race to lead by example and create spaces that are truly inclusive and welcoming. By doing so, we not only honor the diversity within our community but also educate and inspire others to do the same. Let's celebrate talent in all its forms and work towards a more inclusive future.

Overall, based on my analysis, RuPaul's Drag Race starts to mirror real-life experiences, such as coming out, accepting one's gender identity, and overcoming preconceptions. It's a window into the varied realities of the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, not just a spectacle.

Looking ahead, I still hope for a more inclusive future for the show. I believe it's important for RuPaul's Drag Race to embrace transgender individuals and provide them with a platform to shine. By welcoming trans or transwomen contestants, the show can continue to evolve and reflect the diversity of the drag community.

Beading goes back as far as 5000 years ago, and it is often regarding as “mankind’s first indulgent luxury, fashioned from seashells, stones, nuts, seeds and carved wood”

Throughout the Middle Ages beadwork was used over embroidery as embellishment. In the Renaissance Era and Elizabethan England it was often used to embellished clothes, purses, jewellery boxes, and small pictures. Embroidery has made its way into different cultures and become a really significant cultural and status symbol.

An example of a designer that uses beading would be Bob Mackie. He was born in the States in Southern California and was most renowned for designing Cher’s many iconic looks. There is a major element of Hollywood glamour in his work, as it was made to be shown on a tv screen or used in a performance. After fitting his pattern, mackie would draw directly onto the figure to achieve the desired intricacy and placement on the beads. Mackie was introduced to Cher after a guest appearance on the Burnett show, and afterwards she asked him to create her costumes for “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour”. Many iconic looks were designed for her featuring lots of embellishment and beading.

An example of cultural beading would be from the Indigenous highlands of Vietnam. Recently a drag queen competing on the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars- Plastique Tiara, featured this kind of beading as part of her Vietnamese heritage in her promo look for the Show.

The Vivienne's family 'overwhelmed by love' at moving vigil

Hundreds of people have honoured RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar The Vivienne at an emotional vigil in Liverpool, as the star’s family said the outpouring of love was “overwhelming” after Viv’s tragic death.

The Vivienne, a.k.a. James Lee Williams, died on January 5 aged just 32.

The Vivienne won the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, returned for All Stars 7 in 2022. The drag artist was also a rising star on British TV and the stage.

In Liverpool, fans and loved ones gathered on the steps of Liverpool’s St George’s Hall landmark, which lit up in green. The colour honoured The Vivienne’s recent “dream” role as The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (above).

During the vigil, The Vivienne’s friend Bobby Musker read a statement from her family. In it, Viv’s loved ones paid tribute to the “son, brother, uncle and true icon” they’ve lost.

“As a family we are completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love for James, The Vivienne,” the family said.

“From an early age it was evident they were destined for the stage. They were determined to pave their own way in this world.

“The road was not easy but the dream never, ever changed. James would always tell us that they would make it happen and they did.”

The Vivienne’s family said they are “unbelievably proud” of what the performer achieved.

“We will miss you for an eternity and for an eternity we will all love you,” they said.

Tributes to The Vivienne at DragCon UK

The Vivienne’s tragic death sparked an outpouring of grief from Drag Race fans, queer communities and beyond across the world.

At the weekend, The Vivienne’s drag sisters converged on DragCon UK in London.

Launching the event, RuPaul, joined by Michelle Visage and Raven, all dressed in black, paid tribute to The Vivienne.

“We are going to remember our dear The Vivienne, with love, life, and that’s what she was all about,” Ru said.

“She would love for you to live your lives and to be free and to have a lot of fun and to spread it around.”
