Dragon Age: Protagonist Relationships

I don't think there's an official template for this idea/meme anywhere, but I saw one and had to try to make it in Canva.

The top chart includes only my canon Warden, Hawke, Inquisitor, and Rook, all of whom are female mages.

Next up on Things I Liked About Veilguard: the faction leaders. We all know some of the factions and their NPCs did not get anything like the amount of content and character that others did (Strife and Irelin I'm so sorry, I still love you), but sometimes I take a step back and realise how wonderful the stuff we did get was.

I mean - Evka and Antoine. Everything about them is so heartfelt. I hadn't read the supplemental material, but they barely needed to interact before I understood why this sweet, smart guy and this tough, smart woman loved each other. They affirm each other constantly. They respect each other so deeply. They have written letters for the other to take to their Callings: a cipher only Antoine could read. Je t'aime. Je t'aimerai toujours.

I love how Myrna and Vorgoth are introduced, suddenly and unsettlingly there in the Lighthouse. I love Vorgoth speaking in all caps. I love the fact that nobody knows what they are. I love that they raised baby Ingellvar. I love how Myrna is calm and polished while every so often coming out with the absolute wildest shit. They're fun.

The Viper and Tarquin? Top tier. They might be my favourites, just because of how much they have going on. Each of them has a backstory, and you can see exactly how those backstories produced their personalities. Ashur has a secret identity you can piece together from notes and codexes (and it's the funniest identity possible). I love their argument over Ashur's paranoid investigation into Tarquin, because it shows that the world goes on when Rook is not in the room, and the NPCs have relationships that go through ups and downs.

I'm mildly insane over the level of devotion, with Tarquin's desperate letters to the Wardens if Ashur is blighted, begging for a cure Ashur won't take. Him standing over Ashur to defend him in the final mission, or else his devastating reaction if Ashur dies: 'It should have been me!' God, these NPCs are alive. (fun fact: I wrote most of this post, and then Sheryl Chee confirmed these two were written as being in love with each other and stupid about it. I'm so happy.)

Speaking of NPCs who love each other: Teia and Viago, my beloveds. Again, I was coming in without the supplemental material, and I was sold on them so fast. The way Viago tenderly cradles Teia from behind as they mourn Caterina. The way they're so involved in Lucanis's personal quests - they're his family, they're there for him, they love him. I love Teia's fierceness and her heart. I love their banter - so much mutual understanding, exasperation and affection mixed together. 'We know each other too well to be strangers.'

Isabela is as wonderful as she always is - I especially appreciate how her depiction in Veilguard makes it clear just how loving she is. But can we also talk about Rowan? (I don't know if she's technically considered a faction leader, but meh.) I love her poetic speech patterns; I love that she's a scholar who wrote a bunch of codex entires; I love her calm, soothing voice. I love getting to see a Rivani Seer at last. And I love how she'll suddenly turn around and say, still calm and soothing, 'Spirit of Determination: may your enemies die bitter and in pain.' Perfect, no notes.

Strife and Irelin, sadly, drew the shortest straw when it came to being fleshed out in-game. But what I do love about them is their relationships with your companions. I love the tiny detail of Irelin, Bellara's ex, helping her pack for the Lighthouse; I love how she writes to Bellara to beg her to take care of herself, because she still matters to her.

And while I am a profound Emmrook lover, I appreciate Emmrich/Strife so much too. I love their shared curiosity and sense of adventure; I love thinking that Emmrich might give Strife tenderness that his life has lacked, while Strife could help nudge Emmrich toward boldness. I love the idea of two older men who likely think love has passed them by suddenly going, oh. If the Veil Jumpers didn't get a deeper relationship with Rook, at least they got relationships with Rook's friends.

Dragon Age games always give us a fun roster of companions, but honestly? Veilguard got me invested in the non-companion NPCs more than any other game in the series. Yes, there should have been more - but what we got was so much fun.

4. Do your Rook and their partner share the same faction? If so, does that affect their relationship at all? If not, what is your Rook's opinion of their partner's faction? What is the partner's opinion of Rook's faction?

Nope! Mathilde Ingellvar is a member of the Mourn Watch. She likes the Lords of Fortune, especially Seer Rowan and Matteo, the faction merchant. She's also a bit starry eyed over Isabela, after all the stories Varric's told her. Taash, meanwhile, is very wary of the Mourn Watch and all things corpse. It doesn't get in the way of casual flirting, but when Taash and Emmrich argue it also raises questions between Taash and Rook. It's true that Tillie deals more with spirits than undead, but she loves the Necropolis and the Mourn Watch. When she started travelling with Varric she experienced first hand what other people think of Nevarra's Mortalitasi, and she learned to downplay it to avoid friction. With Taash, Rook was afraid she downplayed it too much, hid part of herself and that it would ultimately be a deal breaker for Taash. They made it clear that their feelings for Rook were unchanged, and that they don't want her to hide because she doesn't have to with them. While I don't see Taash ever being 100% comfortable with 'skin-on' (lol) undead, I do think eventually they'd be fine with Manfred and the regular Necropolis skeletons. They're also good with spirits, and when they visit the Necropolis with Rook I like to think they'd go find Keepsake and Curio for a chat.

9. Does your Rook bring them out often? How are they like on the battlefield? Do they banter much?

Taash and Rook are joined at the hip pretty much from jump. Like, if Thedas had u-hauls they'd be renting one. If one is going out you can reasonably expect the other to tag along. With a little practice they work very well as a team, but they never shut up. This is particularly true if Bellara is with them, they're all certified yappers. If they're out with Lucanis they end up in a contest to see who can come up with the best/worst kill line.

Bitterness: 2/10 — bitterness serves and changes nothing and wasn't something she had the luxury for but there is still some and there are days when it's stronger, but mostly she doesn't see the point

Happiness: pre-veilguard 3/10 post-veilguard 9/10 — she is absolutely happy with Emmrich and Manfred, but she's scared that it'll all go away

Chivalry: 9/10 — in the terms of polite and courteous behaviour she is all about that even if you push her, in the terms of knightly graces it's a zero

Pride: 0/10 — my girl has no pride in herself at all, Emmrich and the others are working on it

Honesty: 6/10 — she wants to be absolutely honest and often is to her detriment when a polite lie would be safer, but there are some things she feels she can't tell

Bravery: 8/10 — she is braver than she knows or thinks she is

Recklessness: 10/10 — girl has no self-preservation

Ambition: 0/10 — her only ambition is to live a quiet life where no one notices her, that's not what she's getting though

14. A letter from a faction leader to a companion about Rook’s actions

Taash,

I’m begging you, try to convince Rook to at least shed SOME layers.  The poor girl is going to collapse from heat exhaustion next time she’s in the Hall of Valour.  And before you think it’s because I have ulterior motives, I must assure you that I have only the most innocent of intentions for her.  Rowan tells me the Spirits of Valour really enjoy her fighting spirit, and are concerned about her.  I won’t deny that  the more… material… audience members would appreciate it if she showed off some skin as well.  She ought to be very well toned, and if she’s somehow self conscious about any scars she has, you ought to let her know the Lords of Fortune tend to be quite turned on by them.  Frankly, when you had told me she was from the Nevarran Necropolis, I expected someone more… dour.  And magical.  But the way she moves with that giant greathammer of hers… there’s magic in that. It reminds me of a dear friend of mine, I wonder if she saw him in Minrathous?  Both thin as wraiths, and yet able to take down ogres.  (I wonder if she can do the magical fisting thing?).

Quick question:  That Necromancer, Emmrich, I think his name is?  Is he… available?  The man’s decked out in head to gold, he MUST be loaded.  I was trying to get his attention, pulling out all the stops, batting my eyes, wearing my most revealing outfits, and yet the man, when he deigned to even notice me, would just politely smile!  Incredibly aggravating!  

If you would be a dear, Taash, could you put in a good word for me with the Professor?
