Is It Supposed / Hudson Mohawke (in Cry Sugar, Warp Records, 2022)

Hudson Mohawke embraces dystopian trash-pop imagery on his first album in seven years, maintaining his trademark clarity while bleeding and oozing over a larger canvas than ever.

Hudson Mohawke lives in L.A. now, and he’s fallen head over heels for the American tradition of dystopian trash-pop imagery. The video for a megamix of tracks he released in advance of his third album, Cry Sugar, shows us a CGI scene of a man cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway with an assortment of Mos Eisley-worthy weirdos and an animated woman so buxom she appears warped. It looks like Grand Theft Auto and Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” video at once, run through the brain-fried filter of Kuso, Tim & Eric, and Adult Swim’s Off the Air. The cover by Willehad Eilers features the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters horking down a hamburger. In a city whose hills host the Hollywood sign, the Griffith Observatory, and an alarming regularity of smoke-belching infernos, it’s hard not to find the humor—and the horror—in this aesthetic.

The Scottish producer born Ross Birchard cites “American decadence” and the “quintessential backdrop of late capitalism” as an inspiration for his first solo album in seven years. Cry Sugar isn’t a polemic or satire, but it strikes some of the same notes as Idiocracy or Robocop, in which everything is so big, garish, and dumb it’s almost psychedelic. It’s full of moments that seem distasteful at first until you realize that’s exactly the point. Clarence Coffee Jr.’s rasp initially seems at odds with the music’s polymer-like textures, but he strikes the right note on “Bow” with crass, unsubtle lines like, “Now you walk around all stank-face like you need some Febreze!” Gospel samples abound, and when the choir rises up and screams “Freedom!” on “Intentions,” you might wonder if Birchard knows how cheesy it sounds—until the rest of the album makes it abundantly clear that he does.

Birchard’s style has long lent itself to adjectives like “colorful” and “neon.” But while his sharp shares and tightly quantized beats usually bring a sense of order to the mayhem, Cry Sugar spills all over the place, and the time-stretching and pitch-shifting Birchard slathers on his samples make them sound like they’re melting under the pitiless Southern California sun. Tobacco and Neon Indian go for a similar effect in their work, but while those Day-Glo detritus-diggers tend to choke their tracks in thick production smog, Cry Sugar retains the clarity of Birchard’s earlier music, sometimes giving the impression of a sturdy steel skeleton whose flesh is melting off. “Intentions,” “Bicstan,” and “Dance Forever” are absolute monsters that approach the same almost ridiculous level of intensity as TNGHT’s definitive “Higher Ground” while clearly being born from a more expressionistic corner of Birchard’s brain.

Cry Sugar is Birchard’s longest album by some measure, with 19 tracks that bleed and ooze across 63 minutes. But it’s not long in the way of some bloated event-rap album, rather in the way of great electronic long-players like Since I Left You or Geogaddi, where so much awesome shit happens that you grow excited about what comes next even when the album starts to drag. Most of Cry Sugar’s tracks are around two or three minutes long, but Birchard judiciously breaks up the flow with lengthier cuts, and they’re doozies. “Is It Supposed” is either building towards nothing or climaxing for six minutes, its wistful rave melody sparkling like a firework that refuses to extinguish. “Rain Shadow” is so rhythmically tricky that it eventually stops sounding like a banger and takes on a sort of insectoid beauty. “Lonely Days” is all strings and Westian melodrama.

My personal favorite, though, is “Stump,” one of the first songs from Cry Sugar to see the light of day. It sounds like Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra*—*the tone poem used in 2001: A Space Odyssey to soundtrack mankind’s ascent into the higher realms of sentience—for about two seconds. Then Birchard plays a chord so dissonant the high drama immediately curdles into a joke, as if the starchild has missed its path back to Earth and gone plop into the surface of the sun. It’s exactly the kind of unexpected, pessimistic, profoundly ridiculous sound gag that Cry Sugar delivers one after another, adding up to the funniest, most mind-twisting album Birchard’s ever made.

(Review #418, August 16th [2022]) Cry Sugar is the latest studio album from English electronic music producer and DJ Hudson Mohawke. After the release of the B.B.H.E., Poom Gems, and Airborne Lard mixtapes in 2020, Ross Matthew Birchard is back in reasonably stable form on Cry Sugar. However, the record has a number of issues that come with it.

Much of Cry Sugar is the Hudson Mohawke project continuing to demonstrate what it does best: creating violent and somewhat mind-melting pieces of happy hardcore electronic music. While it would be wrong to say that it succeeds in altering the listener's view of how electronic music can be made, there still is something to be said about the record's achievements overall. Despite being over an hour in length, the vast majority of Cry Sugar's individual tracks feel distinct and self-defined. Cuts like "Lonely Days" and "Stump" even act as some of Mohawke's most atmospherically remarkable compositions to date. Cry Sugar sets many goals for itself; some of which are too large for it to achieve. Even still, those expectations that it does manage to meet are undeniably impressive. Considering Hudson Mohawke hasn't been keen on appealing to a more critical audience since 2009's Butter, Cry Sugar feels like a surprising return into the balance of casual enjoyability and experimentalism that his earlier works once established. Not every bit of experimentation works out flawlessly for Cry Sugar. The most apparent blemishes come in the form of the numbers that rely on structural dissonance. On paper, dissonant compositions doesn't seem something that Hudson Mohawke should fumble with. In fact, it's a topic that the musician has explored to varying extents in the past. Cry Sugar simply doesn't make enough use out of this sound. This ultimately means that the more industrial adjacent songs like "KPIPE" and "Bow" feel horrifically out of place on a record with a variety of other influences. That isn't to say that these songs are inherently bad. They aren't the artistic peak of industrial or electronic hardcore music by any means, but they are passable for solid ventures into that particular realm of electronic music. What really sets them back in terms of quality is their failure to have a purpose on Cry Sugar. In a way, the same could be said about some of Mohawke's other influences. The sampling usage of classic soul and R&B as well as modern pop tracks is clever, the decision to transform them into a chipmunk soul aesthetic even more so. Unfortunately, this aspect of Cry Sugar is never quite utilized to its fullest extent. It is obviously something that pops up quite a bit on the album, with most songs on Cry Sugar featuring some form of pitched-up vocals in the background. This adds a sense of layering to many individual songs that greatly boosts their effectiveness. However, the aforementioned chipmunk soul's usage as far as song placement and mixing goes feels inconsistent at best. That's a keyword for a number of different minor factors surrounding this album: inconsistent. The length doesn't help things either. Clocking in at over an hour, Cry Sugar does not warrant its runtime whatsoever. Of the nearly sixty-three minutes that this listening experience is composed of, only forty of them would be needed to convey all of the creative choices that Hudson Mohawke is bringing with him. By the end of everything, the wrap up of Cry Sugar doesn't feel very impactful. This is disappointing, seeing as things virtually wrap up with the otherwise strong "Come a Little Closer." This is because the project begins to transform into a slog to get through by the time the third quarter rolls around. It isn't that Cry Sugar would be significantly better or worse with a shorter runtime, but it would make things slightly more tolerable when listening to it from front to back. In conclusion, Cry Sugar is an album that sets out to accomplish quite a bit and does manage to achieve a chunk of it. However, there are some flaws deeply woven into the fabric of the record that prevent it from being recommendable to anyone beyond Hudson Mohawke fans. Although Cry Sugar is a unique and unpredictable release, it simply doesn't develop most of its many sounds enough to work beyond a generally decent standard of quality.

It was musics biggest night as the Recording Academy honored the best the industry has to offer at the 59th annual Grammy Awards.

The competition this year was fierce to say the least, but Adele was the clear winner of the night. The British singer took home five awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. David Bowie posthumously won five awards, including Best Rock Album andBeyoncwon two awards as well.

While all the big names were nominated, Justin Bieber,Drake and Kanye West are decided toskip the awards.

Adele, Beyonce give 2017 Grammy's some life

Adele swept the 2017 Grammy Awards, but she made more news from her technical difficulties resulting in an 'f-bomb' drop during her emotional tribute to George Michael. She had the audience with her as she remained the true pro and stated that she wanted to start again because Michael deserved better than what she began with. The result was a stirring song delivered flawlessly with an audience in tears feeling the emotion. Later in the evening, even her acceptance speech for song of the year was interrupted by that annoying play-off music for her collaborator Greg Kurstin. This resulted in the crowd booing, but Adele got her say when they won again for record of the year. Adele scolded, “You cut him off last time!” James Corden delivered a satisfactory performance as host, but the evening belonged to Adele and Beyonce with neither disappointing. Adele's opening "Hello" was stark and bare of any distractions with only her powerful voice filling the room. Beyonce, on the other hand, had it all. Queen Bey was introduced by her mother, and then those familiar opening chords from "Love Drought" came on from Lemonade. It was a production number that had it all and felt like a video come to life. She was eager to show her tummy clad in a golden headdress, and she delivered an epic production. Beautiful, stunning and fabulous were the words that quickly came to mind during her show.

2017 Grammy Awards

The highest caliber of all music award shows is almost here. While Blue Ivy is now 5 and has probably outgrown sippy cups (I don’t know, I don’t have kids), it sure is exciting to look forward to Beyonce adding to her already massive arsenal of Grammys (20!!!). Another great highlight is the return of Adele to the show after the release of her latest masterpiece, 25. Below are my picks for (most of) the categories.
