Rosalino "Chalino" Sánchez Félix (1960 - 1992) was a Mexican singer and writer best known for his narcocorrido recordings. Narcocorrido, or drug ballad, is a traditional folk music from northern Mexico, with lyrics that tend to speak approvingly of illegal activities, mainly drug trafficking. It uses a danceable, accordion-based polka as a rhythmic base. The first corridos that focus on drug smugglers—the narco comes from "narcotics"—have been dated by Juan Ramírez-Pimienta to the 1930s. Early corridos (non-narco) go back as far as the Mexican Revolution of 1910, telling the stories of revolutionary fighters. Music critics have also compared narcocorrido lyrics and style to gangster rap and mafioso rap. Drug traffickers will sometimes commission musicians, for tens of thousands of dollars, to sing a narcocorrido about them in order to immortalize themselves. Unfortunately, for the musicians, this will often upset rival drug cartels and can be taken extremely personally. Chalino Sanchez was born in the Sinaloa state in Mexico, on a ranch called "Las Flechas." His family was impoverished and lived in an isolated village. He had 7 siblings, and his father died when he was 6. At the age of 15, Chalino shot and killed one of several men who had raped his sister four years earlier. After the incident, he left for the United States to stay with an aunt in Los Angeles. In California, he worked numerous jobs, including a stint as a “coyote,” smuggling illegal aliens into the US. In the early 1980s, Chalino was sentenced to serve eight months in La Mesa jail for a variety of petty crimes. During his time in jail, Chalino practiced music and exchanged stories with other Sinaloans. This experience inspired Chalino to describe these stories through song. Once released, Chalino quickly established a reputation for writing corridos on commission and his music career took off. Chalino is one of the first and most famous musicians to sing narcocorridos, credited with starting the modern genre. The narcocorridos resonated with Sinaloans that moved to L.A. #destroytheday https://www.instagram.com/p/BuMOHFDBe71/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=t8kpr5qfehtj
