New York Town 'Ravaged' by EF-2 Tornado as Deadly Severe Storms Sweep Through Northeast
Storms wreaked havoc across several states, including Rome, New York, prompting the town to declare a state of emergency due to extensive damage. The National Weather Service conducted an initial survey and rated the tornado at least an EF-2, with winds of 135 mph.
At least one person has died as severe storms swept across the Northeast on Tuesday, bringing hurricane-force wind gusts and widespread tornado damage.

Storms wreaked havoc across several states, including New York, where a state of emergency was declared due to extensive damage from thunderstorms and tornadoes.
In Canastota, an 82-year-old man was found dead after severe thunderstorms caused heavy damage in the village and the city of Oneida, Madison County officials said. He was checking on his antique car when he was killed.
Photos taken around Rome, New York, show roofs ripped from buildings, with numerous toppled trees and power lines scattered throughout the town. More than a dozen buildings partially collapsed, while others sustained heavy damage, leaving debris strewn across busy city streets.
Witnesses reported that the steeple of Saint Mary's Church was destroyed, and roofs were stripped from both Presbyterian and Catholic churches along James Street, as well as from a nearby grocery store.
Gov. Kathy Hochul described the town as looking like "a war zone" after the deadly storms.
"This is the worst disaster to hit the city in its 228-year history," Hochul said from Rome after surveying the damage from above. "The storm ravaged this city."
One RV was found tipped on its side, and Hochul reported that a family, including a toddler, had to flee for shelter while inside the RV.
Patients and staff were inside the Kabari Wellness Center in Rome when the tornado struck. Manager Kimberley Smith said the staff had "no time to react" as the winds picked up and blew out the windows.
Dr. Kabari was with a patient when he received the Tornado Warning alert on his phone.
"I grabbed my phone to check the alert, and as soon as I did, the whole building started shaking," he said.
Smith added that the front of the wellness center and the roof were both destroyed.

B-52 Bomber Tipped Over in Storm
Oneida County has declared a state of emergency and advised residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Gusts reached 79 mph at Griffiss Air Force Base as the line of thunderstorms moved through. Hochul reported that the winds were strong enough to tip a B-52 bomber, weighing over 180,000 pounds, onto its side.
The National Weather Service conducted an initial survey and rated the storm at least an EF-2, with winds reaching 135 mph.

As of now, there are no reports of injuries in Rome. Other gusts in New York reached 87 mph in Glens Falls, 73 mph in Edinburg, and 69 mph in Queensbury.
Dozens of wind damage reports have also come from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, and New Hampshire. At the storm's peak, about 300,000 customers in New York and Pennsylvania were without power. By Wednesday, around 120,000 remained without power.
"This is an urgent situation. It’s hot. People need their power," Hochul said.
Parts of New York were recently included in heat advisories amid the region's third heat wave of the summer. The heat is expected to peak on Wednesday, with cooler air bringing some relief.
Severe Thunderstorm Watches were posted for a large area of the Northeast on Tuesday and were issued again on Wednesday.

"Heavy rain may lead to catastrophic flash flooding in already flooded South Florida."
Heavy rainfall has been inundating South Florida for the third consecutive day on Thursday, with flash flood warnings in effect from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. Wednesday’s storms transformed roads into canals and caused water to seep into homes.
Flash flooding is likely to occur more quickly than usual as the areas around Miami are already saturated from over a foot of rain in the past two days.

Nearly 1.7 million people living in South Florida – including the cities of Hialeah, Aventura, and Doral – are under a flash flood warning Thursday evening. A line of storms approaching the Miami area has the potential to produce several inches of rain in a short period, according to the Miami-South Florida office of the National Weather Service.
"Significant flash flooding is expected in urban areas, with locally catastrophic flash flooding possible," the Weather Prediction Center warned earlier Thursday.
High-risk days are exceedingly rare, occurring on fewer than 4% of days each year on average, but they account for more than 80% of all flood damage and over a third of all flood deaths in the US.
More than 8 million people are under flood alerts Thursday, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Naples. An additional 4 to 8 inches of widespread rain is expected through Friday, with some areas potentially receiving nearly a foot of rain.

Six to more than 20 inches of rain has deluged South Florida since Tuesday morning, prompting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to declare a state of emergency for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties. While the state is accustomed to heavy rain, these events are becoming more intense as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution.
Ongoing flooding from previous rainfall is a major reason the flood risk is so high on Thursday. Floodwaters haven’t had time to fully recede, and aerial imagery showed some communities in and north of the Miami metro area remained underwater Thursday morning.
In Hallandale Beach, located just north of Miami, nearly 20 inches of rain had fallen, leaving some mobile home parks still underwater, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane. Severe flooding on Wednesday covered cars up to their windshields, forcing some drivers to abandon their stalled vehicles and wade to safety. Others had to be rescued.
“We had to use our boats to rescue people standing on top of the roofs of cars,” Kane told CNN. Kane’s office received 175 calls for help in Hallandale Beach alone.
Resident Kait Madrigal spent five hours stuck in her car Wednesday after it became suddenly surrounded by floodwaters on her way to work near Hollywood, Florida, she told CNN. She managed to park on the sidewalk to reach higher ground but began to panic as the water rose and cars stalled around her.
“If I was to open my car door, I would’ve just had a ton of water rushing in. I would’ve been out of luck big time,” the 25-year-old said.
After hours of unrelenting rain, Madrigal waded through the water and found a possible exit route. Fearing she might be trapped all night, she drove out and made it home safely.

Local officials have warned against driving through murky floodwaters and are urging storm-weary South Floridians to stay home. Most flood-related drownings occur when cars unknowingly drive into deep water, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety.
Fort Lauderdale, where the mayor declared a local state of emergency, received its entire average June rainfall of around 9.5 inches in just 24 hours on Wednesday.
Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport led the nation with the most flight cancellations or delays on Wednesday, with more than 1,200 disruptions. The air travel woes are expected to continue through the end of the workweek.
In Broward County, the severe storms prompted school officials to postpone the demolition of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School building, where a gunman killed 17 people in 2018.
Many South Florida residents had only just finished repairing their homes after catastrophic flooding in April 2023, only to find water lapping at their doorsteps on Wednesday.
Anna Rysedorph, a resident of the Broward County neighborhood of Edgewood, prepared for the worst as water circled her ankles in her home.
“I put the dogs in, I’m all packed up. I pretty much got everything in bins and we’re ready to go,” Rysedorph told CNN affiliate WSVN on Wednesday. “My husband’s like ‘Don’t panic, don’t panic,’ but you know, I’m not gonna be caught unprepared.”
Significant Flood Risk on Thursday
Multiple rounds of torrential downpours fueled by a stream of tropical moisture from the Caribbean are drenching the southern Florida Peninsula on Thursday. Friday will bring another drenching day to South Florida, even as the tropical moisture gradually shifts out of the area. Some locations could see more than two feet of rain from Tuesday through Friday.
Wet weather is likely to continue over the weekend, though not as severely as the past few days. However, even typical June showers and thunderstorms with light-to-moderate rainfall could cause additional flooding and prevent existing floodwaters from receding.

The silver lining is that the rain is beneficial for drought-stricken areas. Half of Florida is experiencing abnormal dryness or drought conditions, with the worst drought centered in the area receiving the heaviest rain, according to the US Drought Monitor.
