Fred- Hiding part 2
Y/N opened her eyes to feel a throbbing behind her eyes. The twins old bedroom at the burrow greeted her with it's familiar walls full of joke blueprints and quidditch memorabilia. A wave of confusion came over her. Why did she wake up here? Yesterday she woke up in her familiar cozy Diagon Alley apartment with her son Sirius ,and her husband Fred. Y/N sat up to see Fred had already made his way downstairs while Sirius laid still wrapped up in his green dinosaur blanket. Seeing her bag of documents Y/N remembered. Diagon Alley was no longer safe and neither would this burrow soon. Sirius began to stretch his balled up fists over his head. He began to open his chocolate brown eyes. Y/N smiled. She couldn't think about all she had lost now. Not when Sirius was around. “ Good morning my darling.” Y/N cooed above a whisper moving his curly black hair off of his face. Sirius smiled a little still half asleep trying to keep his eyes open. “ Let's get you ready for today.” Y/N pulled out her Overnight bag. She had packed the weirdest assortment of things when she left. None of the outfits she had seemed to match. Slowly Y/N changed Sirius into a burgundy onesie putting each arm in slowly and gently as he was not fully awake yet. Sirius woke up and was now hungry. He squealed a little talking to his mother. “ There’s my handsome little man. Let's get you fed and downstairs.” After Sirius was fed, Y/N slowly made her way down the the kitchen. Arthur and Fred were planning in hushed voices. Molly turned from the kitchen sink. “ Good morning dears.” This caught Fred and Arthur’s attention. Molly quickly took Sirius from Y/N. “Sit down deary, you have a long day of planning ahead of you.” The fear she had pushed to the back of her mind was back. She slowly sat beside Fred. She soon felt his hand gently touch her’s as he kept talking to his father. “ So we have a budget of 20 Galleons for new clothes for the both of us. We need to blend into the muggle surrounding.” Y/N nodded and interjected. “ I know someone who can convert our money into muggle currency. I know a cheap store in the muggle high street to get us clothes.” Arthur and Fred nodded. “ Okay your clothes are covered what about things for Sirius? Your mother and I could help we have some money put aside-” “ No dad, We’ll be alright. We put away enough money for him. He even has a vault to pay for Hogwarts.” Arthur nodded. Going through the list of things they would need seemed endless. Fred and Y/N had to rebuild a life from the ground up. A hasty knock on the door startled the occupants. Arthur and Fred pointed their wands at the door. Y/N’s heart dropped to her stomach. “Who is it?!” Arthur asked. “ It’s Bill! Open the door.” Fred quickly opened the door. Bill stormed in. “ They know it's Ron!” All the air left YN’s body. Soon the ministry would raid the burrow. “ Get your bags you have to leave now!” Sirius let out a high pitched cry from all the screaming. Percy appeared through the floo powder network. “ I got the documents just as news of Ron and Hermione broke! Get the bags!” Y/N and Fred bolted up the stairs to the twins bedroom. Fred hastily threw his clothes into a bag. Y/N put Sirius into his clothes with shaking hands. Percy ran up the stairs. “ Fred! Y/N your ride is here!” Sirius cries grew louder as Fred pulled him off the bed and started to head downstairs. Y/N looked back at the room. Wands, documents, Sirius’s things. “ My ring.” She looked on the bedside table where it usually would be. “Y/N now!” Fred yelled from the bottom of the stairs. She had to leave her wedding ring. Her most prized possession. She heard Sirius’s wails which brought her back to reality. Possessions could be replaced. People could not. Y/N ran down the stairs. It was a very fast good bye full of tears. No one knew when or if they would see each other again. Molly kissed Y/N’s cheek. “ Take care of Freddie for me.” Y/N could only reply with a tearful nod. “ Get in the car and whatever you do, don’t contact anybody!” Percy said helping Fred throw the bags in the back. Fred pulled his brother into a hug for the first time since they were small. “ Thank you.” Percy gave a small smile. “ Anytime.” With that the car door was slammed shut. Y/N held Sirius close to her chest, his cries were becoming more faint now that the car was quiet. “ You’re okay baby. Mummy and Daddy are right here.” Sirius opened his balled up fists to Fred to pick him up. Fred quickly picked him up. Sirius laid his head on his father's shoulder calming himself down. Y/N looked over all the documents and was counting the money. Sirius finally seemed to calm down. Fred wrapped his free arm around Y/N’s waist. He kissed the top of her head. “ How far is the drive?” Fred asked the driver. “ I can’t say.” The driver replied. Y/N looked up at Fred with fearful eyes. “ It’s okay. We’ll be okay.” He told Y/N and also tried to convince himself as well. After sometime the stressed occupants of the cab fell asleep only to wake up when the driver stopped the car. “ We’re here.” The driver’s booming voice brought everyone out of a dead sleep. The afternoon sun they had fallen asleep with had turned into a dim twilight. “ Where are we?” Fred asked opening the car door. “Just a couple of moments outside of Bakewell. Old muggle couple is renting this cottage for cheap. They left a map of the area on the table. Now you lot better get inside, i’m due back at the ministry soon.” Y/N unloaded the bags from the back of the cab while Fred scrambled to find his wallet. “ How much?” He asked the driver. “The man put his hand up. “ Free of charge son. It’s a war after all. Good luck with the tyke and the mrs.” And with that the man sped away into the surrounding forest. Y/N and Fred walked down the hidden path. Pine trees lined the way. Down old wooden stairs led down to a creek. A warn a gray stone cottage. Pale tattered white shutters were boarded shut. The thatched roof looked like places have been mended. Fred used the key Percy gave him with Sirius’s new identity papers. It took all Fred’s body weight to knock the door in. The cottage was small. The furniture were covered in white sheets that had long been covered in gray dust.Fred lifted his wand to clean the place. Y/N grabbed his wrist. “ No! The ministry is monitoring all magic.” Fred let out a sigh. “ It’ll be dark soon, let's at least get the bedroom ready.” The bedroom was smaller than their Diagon Alley apartment. The room had a small path beside the queen sized bed and that was it. No bedside table, no dresser and, no crib. Y/N pulled out an old king sized sheet that Fred and her had packed. The green and red flowered fitted sheet was too big for the bed the only blanket was a thin summer quilt Molly had made them when they got married. Y/N sat outside by an old pine tree as Fred raced the sun to get the bedroom ready. Sirius lay fast asleep on the freshly made bed. Y/N and Fred couldn't think of sleeping. They had to make this place livable. The war had no end in sight. Fred and Y/N went to the kitchen. “ We need new China and cutlery.” Y/N said in melancholy tone. “ Not to mention a crib. Where will we put it? In the living room?” Fred thought out loud to himself. “ we need pots and pans as well. Have you looked at the bathroom Fred? No bath or shower just a large tin basin.” Y/N watched Fred’s eyes dart as his mind raced a million thoughts a second. Y/N gently placed her hand on Fred’s. “ We’ll get through this. This war won’t last forever.” Y/N watched carefully as the stressi Fred’s eyes grew. “ I will get us through. Even if I have to fight. Every last death eater myself. Our family will make it through.” Y/N kissed his temple. “ We’ll make it through together. We don’t need money to be happy. As long as we’re together. That would be enough.” The next couple of weeks were a blur of cleaning, shopping and, trying to build a life. Everything changed when a knock came at the door. Fred and Y/N sat on the floor as Sirius was enjoying his tummy time. BAM BAM BAM. Strong knocks at the front door made them nearly jump out of their skins. Y/N’s first instinct was to grab Sirius but, she knew he would cry and give them away. Fred slowly went towards the door. Pulling his wand out of the kitchen drawer. “ Who is it?! You got 10 seconds before I blow your brains out!” A shuffle behind the door. “ Fred you and I both know your aim was never as good as mine.” It was George’s voice. Fred ran and opened the door. There stood Fred and his best man Lee Jordan. “ Merlin! Quick come in come in! You scared us half to death.” Y/N greeted the boys with hugs and smiles. “ It’s so good to see you! How did you find us?” George and Lee sat at the kitchen table. “ We have connections. We came to ask you both for a favour.” Y/N and Fred sat down at the table while Sirius sat playing with a teething ring on Y/N’s lap. “ Lee and I have a plan on getting the real news to everyone. The Daily Prophet is nothing more than propaganda. We need to support Harry as well as anyone fighting against these monsters.” Lee continued. “ I’m starting a news station on the radio. Underground obviously. We take the news from our uncensored sources. We need your help. I need your voice and most importantly this location to use as a base of operation.” Y/N’s heart sank to her stomach. This was dangerous. Anyone found spreading uncensored media would be executed. “ I don’t know if I could put Sirius and Y/N’s life on the line-” “ we’ll do it.” Y/N said defiantly shocking everyone at the table. “ What?” Fred asked breathless bewildered at his wife. “ Fred, People need to hear the truth. Harry needs to know what's going on WE need to know what's happening. This war isn’t going to end unless people like us resist. I don’t want Sirius to grow up in a world like we had to live in. Constant fear of that monster coming back. They want us to be afraid so we won’t act. We NEED to act. If not now, when?” George nodded in agreement. Fred looked down at Sirius still blissfully unaware of this tense situation. He wanted Sirius to stay that way forever. Blissfully unaware of war and oppression. “ Alright. We’ll do it.” Thus Potterwatch began. Y/N would receive the uncensored news from not only inside of Hogwarts but, from all over England. While Sirius napped she changed names, edited notes and set up times to meet with the various hosts. The kitchen table became headquarters. A map of England dotted with last known locations of death eater attacks and vague news from Anonymous sources covered the small living room walls. Fred worked during the day with the Order of the Phoenix to come up with new passwords and ways of safely getting the news to more people. It became Y/N’s and Fred’s life’s work. “ That concludes this broadcast. Tune in again tomorrow. Moony is the word. I repeat Moony is the word. Good night and never give up.” Fred turned off the forecast for the night. “ Good job Mr Annoucer.” Y/N said with a wink. Fred smirked back as George and Lee prepared to go back to their hiding places. “ We will see you tomorrow.” Y/N hugged Fred. “ Done for the day.” Before Y/N and Fred could kiss Sirius started to cry. The two parents giggled. “ Everytime.” Fred said heading towards the bedroom. The next day George arrived earlier then scheduled“ Fred! Y/N!” George came bursting through the front door. “ What is it George?!” Fred yelled back rather annoyed. “ It's time to get Hogwarts back.” Fred and Y/N knew exactly what this meant, the order was getting together to help Harry Potter. Y/N took nothing but, her wand and Sirius. It was wonderful to see the Burrow again. Y/N missed its familiar sense of home. “ Y/N! Freddie! Welcome back!” Molly held her arms open. “ Molly! It’s been so long!” Sirius wiggled in the hug. “ Hello there too little Deary!” Molly kissed his head. “ Hey Mum how have you been?” Fred said walking into his childhood home. “ Oh none of that! Give your mum a hug!” Molly pulled her tall lanky son into a hug. “ Muuuuum you’re smothering me.” Fred said jokingly. “ Hush you! It's been months!” Fred’s wife Poppy greeted the two next. “ It's so nice to see you all!” Y/N hugged her best friend. They hadn't been separated this long since they met when they were seven years old. Her father Remus waved with his wife Tonks. Remus had come on multiple occasions to talk on Potterwatch and had been a lovely help. “ So Poppy will stay here with the twins and Y/N will stay here with Sirius-.” Y/N cut Fred off. “ I’m going with you.” Fred scowled. “ No, you’re going to be here safe with Sirius.” Y/N place her hands on her hips. “ Every able bodied person needs to be there. Poppy has a weak composition so she has to stay but, I am perfectly capable of defending the school.” All the members left the room to further get ready sensing the fight that would take place between Y/N and Fred. “ You are staying here and that is final! What will happen to Sirius if you fight?!” Fred never raised his voice to Y/N like this before. “ What will happen to him if I don’t fight and this war goes on and those monsters win?! I will not stand idly by as those monsters destroy my school! My home!” Fred began to leave the room. “ i’m not dealing with this selfish attitude. You’re staying with Sirius.” Y/N ran in front of the door slamming her hand against the door to keep it shut. “ Fred! You listen to me and you listen good! You think I really want to fight in this war? No one does! I am doing this because I love my son more than I could ever put into words. I will not let him fight my war. We can beat them together. I need your support. You are the love of my life. I believe in you, do you believe in me?” Fred sighed. He placed his head gently on Y/N’s shoulder. “ I'm scared.” Y/N weakly smiled. “ Me too. But, we can do this. Together. We have always been a team and that's how we will stay.” Fred sighed. “ You win.” Y/N held Sirius close to her chest. In a moment of quiet while planning went along in the other room. “ Sirius. Mummy loves you very much. I have to go away for awhile with Daddy. I hope I won’t be too long. I’ll miss you a lot. I hope one day you'll understand why I have to go and fight. Be a good boy for auntie Poppy.” Reluctantly Y/N quickly put Sirius back on the floor with George and Poppy’s twins. Fred ran into the room. “I’ll say a quick good bye to Sirius and I will meet you outside.” Fred sat beside Sirius propped up by pillows looking at his book. “ Alright buddy. Your old man needs to go for awhile. I promise when you go to Hogwarts it’ll be a safe place. One day Mummy and I will tell you all about our adventures at Hogwarts. I love you buddy.” With one last kiss on his chubby cheek he left Sirius in Poppy’s care. The order all stood outside the burrow. “ Okay, everyone is here. If you want to leave speak now.” Y/N held Fred’s hand. The two smiled at one another. This would be there next big adventure. Together as they always had been. Hand in hand.

QUEENS’ OTHER GRAND AVENUE, Astoria
There’s been a lot of news about the subways and transportation in New York City lately, most of it about the deteriorating infrastructure in the more-than-century-old system. Extensive re-routings, rush-hour delays and cancellations on weekends are now the norm. Most subway lines in NYC share trackage, so problems on one line can affect others. Recently, the Metropolitan Transit Authority was planning to shutter the L train, a formerly sleepy but now vital link between the East Village/Midtown Manhattan and Williamsburg, Bushwick, East New York and Canarsie in Brooklyn. “Superstorm” Sandy had wreaked havoc in the tunnels, with salt water seeping into everything including electrical conduits that power the trains. While the MTA’s original plan would’ve cancelled service for 15 months, Gov. Andrew Cuomo convened his own panel of experts and devised a new plan that would replace the conduits and enact other repairs in a different manner and schedule that would force drastically reduced service overnights and weekends for a longer period, but keep the line open.
There’s not much to celebrate about the trains. But I find ways. I’ve always been an infrastructure enthusiast, taking in the oldest stations with their elaborate Beaux-Arts decorations, through the mid-period mosaics and severe IND Machine Age stations of the 1930s, up to the postmodern stations that seemed to cover everything in glazed orange bricks. In recent years, the MTA has brought in a new phase of subway architecture. The new Second Ave. extension of the Q line created four new stations, three of which feature large panels of contemporary artwork by the likes of Chuck Close. A number of stations have been “refreshed” along the 4th Ave. BMT route in Brooklyn and the IND stations along Central Park West. I haven’t yet visited them all, but the ones I have include large illuminated wall panels, new “countdown clocks” and phone chargers.
The new elevated stations along the Astoria Line serving the N and W trains are a different beast entirely and are somewhat revolutionary. I’m totally fascinated with them. One thing you notice right away is that the 30th Ave., Broadway, 36th and 39th Ave. stations somehow seem larger even though their basic footprints have not changed. Station renovations included, according to the MTA, “repairs to deteriorated concrete and steel structures, and rehabilitated entrances including staircases, railings and canopies; improvements and repairs to mezzanines and platforms; waterproofing; security cameras, glass barriers and railings for increased light and transparency; improved signage for easier navigation, including digital, real-time service information; and glass and wire mesh platform windscreens for added light and safety.”
A major change is that the back walls of the stations are, for the most part, no longer opaque. Thick glass or plastic panels have been installed, separated on occasion by black walls, but a clear view of the outside environs , in this case Broadway looking east, is now possible for the first time. 
Here we see large illuminated system maps and message boards describing route changes (most of the subway infrastructure remains decrepit and weekend and off-hour re-routings are the rule, and descriptions of the changes necessitate lengthy lists).
While the basic canopies of the elevated stations are intact, the platforms themselves are new and the roofs, now soothing wood paneling, are new as well.
The old metal windscreens are gone, replaced by metallic mesh. This provides more views and airiness. It’s one aspect of the remakes I have an issue with because in the winter, these stations will be cold, open to the wind. However, there is a mitigating factor…
…I’ve no idea where the MTA scared up the space in these formerly cramped stations, but each station on the Astoria el now has, or will have when all the station renovations are done, a waiting room! The rooms face countdown clocks at the turnstiles, so passengers might opt to use these rooms instead of standing on the windy platforms no longer protected by windscreens. I never knew there was enough room in the old station for these, pre-renovation. The MTA will have to strive to prevent these “lounges” from becoming homeless havens in the cold months. I haven’t seen anyone using them yet, and it might take awhile for people being conditioned to the presence of waiting rooms in subway stations.
Like other such rooms and entrance areas, new public art has been installed, in this case, Diane Carr’s “Outlook.” My preferences run more toward historical images (my affiliate organization, Greater Astoria Historical Society, could have assisted with this) but the MTA went with the more abstract art route for these new station revisionings.
Clear glass paneling makes the “fare control” area airier. “Countdown clocks” are more numerous in these stations; lengthy platforms in older stations, the MTA has been stingier, with often one clock serving a platform long enough to fit 10 subway cars.
Looking east from Broadway station. For the station lamp stanchions, the MTA has chosen an ultramodern look. On other stations around town, the MTA has worked up retro versions of lamp stanchions from the early 20th Century. So far, the MTA has not retrofitted its platform lamps with bright white LEDs, but for new construction like this, they have.
At the 30th and 36th Avenue stations, the MTA chose to build brand new canopies protecting the staircases from the elements. At Broadway and 39th, the MTA refurbished existing canopies and placed illuminated strips around the station IDs, and also added a countdown clock. Thus, passengers will know exactly what the wait time will be before choosing to enter fare control.
So, today I was out for a ramble in Astoria which has always been one of my favorite regions in Queens; in 2018, I did an “Astoria sweep” circumnavigating the neighborhood nearly completely. Today the plan was, check out the new Broadway station, head north, then east along 30th Avenue (which used to be called Grand — more later) and then nip back to the Woodside LIRR station for a ride back to Little Neck.
This Investors Bank, at the corner of Broadway and 31st Street, above which the el runs, is interesting in a number of ways. Its building features caducei, as well as an ancient “2nd Avenue” sign, a relic of 31st Street’s former name.
The Coca-Cola “privilege sign” opposite the bank has had half of it hacked off in recent years, possibly by Hurricane Sandy. Curiously it now reads “Lies & Cigars” which would make a decent ironic album title; it was probably “school supplies & cigars.” “Privilege signs” were supplied to newsdealers and grocers by companies like Coca-Cola for free or for a small fee, providing a sidewalk sign with the company logo.
This building at Broadway and 32nd Street, aggressive in its blandness and the nondescript face turned toward the public, has a more colorful history as the Broadway Theatre, which was in the building from 1926 to 1962.
Approximately a decade ago, new lampposts using the Triborough Bridge lamppost design appeared on Broadway, Ditmas Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue in Queens and on Elton Avenue and Hunts Point Avenue in the Bronx, both boroughs served by the Triborough. (They haven’t yet appeared on Manhattan streets.) The tall mast at the apex as well as the box on the shaft are cellphone receptors.
Halsey’s, on 33rd Street off 31st Avenue, takes its named from Stephen Ailing Halsey, the founder of Astoria Village.
Astoria’s pedigree dates to the mid-1600s, when William Hallett received a grant for the area surrounding what is now Hallett’s Cove by Peter Stuyvesant. However, the oldest structures in the region date to the mid-1800s, after fur merchant Stephen Ailing Halsey had incorporated the village in 1839.
Astoria was named for a man who apparently never set foot in it. A bitter battle for naming the village was finally named by supporters and friends of John Jacob Astor (1763-1848. Astor, entrepreneur and real estate tycoon, had become the wealthiest man in America by 1840 with a net worth of over $40 million. (As it turns out, Astor did live in “Astoria” — his summer home, built on what is now East 87th Street near York Avenue — from which he could see the new Long Island Village named for him.) After Stephen Halsey incorporated a village there in 1839, streets began to radiate east and south from the area, with fanciful dwellings constructed along them. Many have disappeared in the past few decades as developers place larger high-rises in the Village, which was never granted Landmarks protections.
OK, so I have attained 30th Avenue, parts of which are a very old road in NW Queens. Its former name, until the 1920s, was Grand Avenue. Before most Queens streets received numbers, 30th Avenue was called Grand Avenue, and the Maspeth/Elmhurst Grand Avenue was called Grand Street; it’s an eastern extension of Williamsburg’s Grand Street. Flushing Avenue, which runs through parts of Brooklyn and Queens (but not Flushing), intersects a Grand Avenue in Clinton Hill and ends at another one in Maspeth! And, 57th Street in Maspeth was once called Flushing Avenue, so for some years, Flushing Avenue intersected Flushing Avenue in Maspeth. Things got complicated.
Mitch Waxman, the best night photographer in Queens, runs a site called Newtown Pentacle. It is a theory of his that the Grand Avenue of Astoria and the Grand Avenue of Maspeth are the same route. They are not: but they do have a direct connection. I have reproduced part of the Matthew Dripps map of Queens from 1852, the oldest Queens map I know of. At lower left, the Maspeth Plank Road crosses Newtown Creek and runs northeast. Parts of this formerly tolled route became Grand Avenue, whose many twists and turns avoided hills and swamps.
The Plank Road ended at the heart of today’s Elmhurst; most of Queens Boulevard had not yet evolved, but today’s Broadway curved northwest, continuing into Woodside as today’s Woodside Avenue, turning northwest past another swampy area into Astoria, where it ran to the East River front along Newtown Road, Grand (30th) Avenue and Newtown Avenue. Thus, these two old routes are linked by ancient roads, most of which are still in place today!
Rudy’s Hobby Shop, 30th Avenue off 36th Street, has quite a variety in its display windows: religious icons on the left, toys on the right. The store was founded in 1939 by Rudy Oest as a candy store, and converted to today’s hobby business in the 1980s by his son-in-law Marvin Cochran. “It is quite probably the only place you can pick up a set of acrylic paints and an H.O.-scale New York Central locomotive and a two-foot-tall statue of the Virgin Mary.”
I haven’t been in Queens Comfort yet but one of these days, I will probably visit, budget allowing. So-called comfort food is my kind of thing –the lunch menu features pulled pork, various burgers, waffles and chicken, tater tots and gravy, a Southern-type menu. Reviewed fairly decently. The only objection I have is that they apparently don’t carry Coke or Pepsi. I was dismayed when I heard they had to vacate their old location on 30th Avenue east of Steinway Street, but I see they have relocated here at 36-18 30th.
Usually, pizzerias do not feature modern design in signage, but Slice, at 37-08 30th Avenue, differs. I did not try the goods inside, though, which is what really counts. I have a weakness for the black, red and white combo, that’s pretty much been Forgotten NY colors since the start.
Right next door is the Smokehouse Butcher Bar, but I was drawn to its old-look wooden signs and handy directional signs to barbecue bastions out West and South.
The increasing gentrification or hipsterfication or high-rent-ification of various neighborhoods has produced a trend that I actually do like: interesting store signage. This one at 37th Street and 30th Avenue combines raised letters in different fonts, some recognizable, some not. It’s apparently a Louisiana-style restaurant a few steps up from Popeye’s.
I’ve mentioned often that I enjoy Astoria and would consider moving there but for its skyrocketing residential costs. There are no fewer than three main shopping/dining stretches: 30th Avenue, Broadway and Steinway Street.
The former Loew’s (pronounced incorrectly as Low-ee’s by New Yorkers) Astoria Theatre stretches on 30th Avenue, fronting on Steinway Street, rear-ing on 38th. The Astoria opened in November 1920 by the Loews organization as a 2750-seat, one-screen, one-auditorium venue that, like most theaters of its time, was also home to musical and vaudeville acts. It survived as a theater until fairly recently, closing on December 26, 2001 as the United Artists Astoria Sixplex. Home to a Duane Reade drugstore and a gym chain now, it’s still quite recognizable as a former theater, with its grand arched entrance and marquee still intact.
Around the back, there’s another exercise joint and a wrap counter.
Some apartment buildings have names above the door, and sometimes, the names give clues about former street names. Grand Court, 30th Avenue and Steinway, was built when the avenue was still Grand.
To add confusion to the Queens Comfort saga, its former location on 30th Avenue at Steinway is now Comfort Land, which as Gothamist explains, is not a copyright infringement or another owner bigfooting the name, it’s all legit as it’s owned by the Queens Comfort people. It has the same style plastic-letter signage as the previous incarnation.
A slightly high blood sugar count at the doctor in 2017 put the fear of the Lord into me and I don’t have nearly the donuts, cookies, bagels and candy bars I wish I could (I don’t have diabetes and would prefer to keep it that way).
“You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant” and you also can get it in Astoria. Here’s an Italian “salumeria,” or “place where salumi (cold cuts) are sold.” Nearby are a Balkan restaurant (food from Albania, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, that region) next door to a Thai place.
Against all odds, this otherwise heavily-renovated building on the corner of 30th Avenue and 43rd Street has kept its corner turret. I have a time machine, and it’s the Municipal Archives tax photos from 1940; here’s how it looked that year.
One of Queens’ most gorgeous brick churches, St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, 30th Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets. The church was organized in 1877 when there was a large amount of German Catholics in the region (the Steinways had set up their piano manufacturing plant in Astoria that decade), with the first wooden structure erected in 1880, and the current building with its massive campanile (bell tower) in 1906. Catholic churches seem to build the equivalents of small towns for their parishes, and the church is surrounded by a school rectory and convent.
Many New Yorkers cite 1993’s A Bronx Tale, written and acted in by Chazz Palminteri and produced and acted in by Robert De Niro, as their favorite movie. Though A Bronx Tale was set in the Arthur Avenue region in the Bronx, many of its exteriors were filmed here on 30th Avenue, using vintage buses from the NYC Transit Museum (De Niro’s character was a bus driver). De Niro and Palminteri felt that because so many older buildings were preserved along this stretch, which is less crowded than Arthur Avenue, it would be a better place to film. Palminteri’s mobster, Sonny’s club “Chez Bippy” was filmed at this corner, 30th Avenue and 44th Street.
East of 41st Street, 30th Avenue enters the Mathews Zone: several blocks of apartment buildings constructed with yellow bricks from the kilns of Balthazar Kreischer in the far south end of Staten Island and developed by Gustave X. Mathews beginning in 1915.
The Mathews Model Flats were built by speculative developer Gustave X. Mathews and designed by Louis Allmendinger in the early part of the 20th Century. Considered to be some of the most innovative housing in the city, these “new law” tenements were designed with more space and better sanitation than their overcrowded 19th Century counterparts. By making use of generous lot sizes, introducing wide air shafts to provide improved air circulation and light quality, including bathrooms in each unit, and limiting the number of apartments per floor, Mathews established a new housing paradigm that was a welcome departure from the congested tenements of the Lower East Side. The three story apartment buildings were simple, sturdy, and relatively cheap to construct, and therefore became the standard for subsequent tenement house construction. Exhibited at the 1915 Panama Pacific Fair in San Francisco, the Mathews Model Flats were heralded as an exceptional achievement. Municipal Art Society 
The Quays (pronounced “keys”) is a bar on the corner of 30th Avenue and 45th Street. I was taken in by its painted sign, flags of many countries, and neon CAFE sign. Popular watering hole with performances by local musicians on some nights.
If Balkan, Korean and Italian fare and Irish bars aren’t enough you can get your fill of German comestibles at Max Bratwurst at 30th Avenue and 47th Street. “They have some specialty wursts such as rattle snake and alligator.” Me, I stick with the chicken schnitzel.
You’ve probably seen some of these fancifully painted fire alarms around town. Chances are they are the work of security guard John Colgan, who has made it his business to “rescue” badly graffitied alarm boxes in the Woodside area since 2015, though I have begun to see them elsewhere, like here in eastern LIC.

History:
Francesca Donato was born in a broken down taxi off the New Jersey turnpike on a rainy New Jersey Sunday. Her father, the son of Italian immigrants, along with her two brothers and the taxi driver, stood in the rain as her tough-as-nails Italian mother pushed her into the world while Sinatra crooned on the radio. After a replacement cab arrived her parents made a beeline to their local deli, rather than the hospital, to show her off to their neighbours and friends. “And that’s why you smelled like salami when I saw you that afternoon!” her Grandmother would say with a laugh. That was how she arrived. It wasn’t a particularly fancy entrance into the world, but she was loved from the moment she took her first breath. That summed up life in the Donato household before her mother died. Her father worked menial jobs, running errands and picking up labour where he could. He married his high school dropout sweetheart and amateur hairdresser, Giada, and they had fallen pregnant with their first son quickly. They had a little apartment above a bodega, and they were in love and happy. Another son soon followed, and baby Francesca made three. Money was scarce, the home was tiny, but they got by with smiles on their faces. They had eight happy years, before life changed dramatically. A wet road and a young driver took Giada from her family, leaving three children motherless and Frank a widower. Her mother had been a huge part of her life, as most mothers are. She was loud, funny, fiery and wonderful, and her absence was a hole in their home that would never be filled. From that point onwards all three of the Donato children changed, coping with the loss in different ways. Frankie threw herself into her schoolwork, determined to get the education her mother never had. She had few friends in school, spending her time studying, but she worked out her frustration at the world in her academic achievements and in her promiscuity. Particularly in her final school years, her reputation was in tatters, and her academic transcripts were golden. It was a strange place to be, in between two extremes. She left home the first chance she got, unable to bear the changes around her. Her father remarried, and her new stepmother was a lovely woman, though Frankie couldn’t cope with the change and fled, coming home rarely. She started partying hard, blacking out and waking up in the arms of people she didn’t know, and marking her skin with tattoos for the pain and the rebelliousness of it all. She pursued medicine with the same ferocity she pursued high school study, and her tenacity paid off. She graduated with her medical qualifications, and pursued a specialty in obstetrics and women’s health, with a considerable focus on general family practice and children’s health. She was the only graduate with a nose piercing and an angry expression, but with commendations and excellent grades. Unhappy to work in a normal hospital, she headed overseas. She made several trips to Africa and Asia working in clinics with poorer communities. She was living the jet setter life, no strings, no fuss, enjoying her freedom and her vices. Years passed, and she returned home only at the desperate request of her brother to be a godparent for his first daughter’s christening. So the prodigal daughter returned, and she made her way back to Queens. The trip home, and the birth of her niece Anita, shook her up. It was at this family gathering that she looked around for the first time in a long time and realised how abnormal her life was. Her brothers were both happy, with families and lives. Her father was living well with a lovely woman. She felt she barely blinked and her friends from high school now had babies who were grown and having their own babies, and she was single, living out of suitcases, and struggling to put roots down. Everyone had moved on without her. Frankie decided then and there to make some changes. She called an old friend with connections to the Hickory Creek Medical Centre, and she packed her bags, heading for clean air, open spaces and a community of people to find a new life for herself. And she did, for a while. She found a community, and even a man, and she fell pregnant. But her vices had followed her, and she hadn’t been able to shake her demon of drink and her fear of commitment. The minute she got wind of a job opportunity outside of Hickory Creek, she did what she knew and flew the coop. She tried long distance, and planned to tell him about the baby, but within a few short months she lost the baby. Unexplained miscarriage. Her heart broke, and she cut off all contact with him. He never knew. No one knew. She threw herself into her work once again, but this time around it wasn’t distracting her enough. She turned to old vices she has always battled with: drink, adrenaline, dark places with dark desires. But nothing filled the growing hole inside her heart where her baby had been. Maybe after all these years she had lost the ability to lie to herself. After another few tours of Africa, facing Ebola with no resources and liquor cheaper than water, her heart and her liver began to ache for home. For home cooked meals, a familiar bed, and familiar faces. And then the call came. Her father had passed away. Grieving, for him and for herself, Frankie came home. Upon her arrival, amidst the grief and funeral proceedings, she also received a formal warning from her employer and medical licensing board, reducing her licence to probationary on disciplinary reasons. She had been working drunk, and people had noticed. Word traveled, even from far away countries. Ashamed, grieving and angry, Frankie contacted that old friend again and was fortunate enough to find a position back in Hickory Creek. She has disclosed her probation to her new employers, but her colleagues don’t know. She undergoes compulsory regular sobriety testing, and has to attend meetings. But her hope is that she may be able to find some life here, in this familiar place, if she can keep her demons at bay.

The shop will be open 24 hours a day, the same as the Apple Fifth Avenue location in New York City. July 4 Through Sept. 12, the Swedish public has been given a chance to see and comment on Apple's draft proposal for a shop bordering Stockholm's Kungstradgarden. Also looking at the proposal are 24 regional organizations, and a consultation meeting is set for Aug. 23. The shop's look would take after Apple's more recent buildings, such as its Michigan Avenue store in Chicago, or the Visitor Center in Cupertino. This includes a low, flat roof, curved glass, and wood planking for the ceiling.
