coat stays on - remus lupin x reader
pairing: remus lupin x fem!reader
word count: 1.3k
warnings: it’s just sickly sickly fluff my loves
a/n: @burnthoneydrops encouraged me to post this weeks ago and honestly i totally forgot about it but she’s wonderful and i can’t deny her!! i hope you enjoy, it’s the first i’ve written for remus so i’m a little conscious of it! i’ve also just opened up requests and you can see the characters i’ll write for here, please send in all the fluffiest fluff your hearts can think of <3
- - -
If your hand was starting to feel a little clammy in the crook of Remus’ arm, you weren’t saying anything. The streets were lined with market stalls and lots and lots of people, more importantly, and you were pretty sure if you let go of him right now you might never see him again.
“Doing alright sweetheart?” he asked, leaning his head down to your ear so you’d hear him properly because the man refused to raise his voice even a little, “Still with me?”
You squeeze him tighter to you and rest your head on his arm briefly rather than answering. The two of you had long since lost the others in the crowd, likely because you weren’t clinging to them as you did Remus. It would make you feel silly if it didn’t make you feel ten times better.
It had been Lily’s idea to venture out into the Sunday markets in town, but she clearly hadn’t thought about the timing. Just days before Valentine’s Day and it was packed, almost shoulder to shoulder as you traversed the street. But the 5pm February darkness had enveloped the cobblestones and most of the stalls had decided to illuminate their wares with pretty fairy lights on strings, wrapped around the poles. All kinds of colours. There was a helter skelter a little ways down that was lit up in warm gold.
Despite struggling with the sheer volume of people, Lily had been right that it would be something you’d enjoy.
Remus steers you towards a stall with a blue and white striped roof, filled with fudge of every flavour you can think of. He’s quiet as he stares at them all in turn, but when his eyes land on your favourite, you watch him smile and point it out to one of the sellers.
“That’s not fair,” you murmur, nudging him with a sharp elbow, but either he doesn’t hear you or he ignores you. To get your own back, you signal to the other seller and ask for Remus’ favourite in return.
“Here we are,” he says, handing you the paper bag once you’re a little away from the stall. You’re smug as you hand him one right back. He looks inside before he pouts at you and its adorable. He’s adorable.
“Thank you,” you grin and he rolls his eyes but still thanks you back. Then he points over your shoulder, where the buskers are playing, to the little tables for resting shoppers. There’s an empty one. The two of you share a brief look before you scurry over to claim it. When you sit across from him, you have to let go of his arm and it feels all wrong.
Until, of course, he shuffles his chair around the table so you’re sitting next to each other instead, facing the band.
You’re both content to nibble on your respective fudge for a while, listening to the music, but Remus breaks the comfortable quiet.
“I’m sorry we lost the others,” he says, face close to yours in a way that makes your chest ache, “I know you and Lily were looking forward to this together.”
He’s right in one way, because you were. But it was also inevitable that you’d only get half of Lily’s evening and that James would get the other, something you were thrilled about, honestly, if it meant that during that other half you got Remus.
You couldn’t quite tell him that, yet, so you settled for the next best thing.
“Sirius was in one of his moods,” you shrug, “I think we’ve come out of this one on top.”
Remus doesn’t laugh. You find it quite hard to make him laugh and you used to be conscious of it. You’ve since found that the little smile he does towards his lap is even more gratifying, like he’s holding in a belting laugh out of something that looks like fondness.
He’s doing it now, bottom lip caught by his teeth.
“Right as always,” he muses, looking back up at you, soft as ever. You struggle to keep the awe from your face.
“I am often right,” you whisper back, breaking off another chunk of fudge and popping it into your mouth, “It’s really pretty here at night. Shame about the people.”
“They’re awful, aren’t they?” Remus says, only joking a little, “Although, I’d rather you didn’t come here at night when no one’s around, hm?”
You nudge him again just because you can. He catches your elbow as if punishing you but all he does is run his hand down from your forearm to your hand to see if you’re cold.
“Mr Protective, you are. As if I’d want to come here on my own, idiot.”
“You’re cold,” he says instead, mutters it like he’s talking to himself as he squeezes both your hands in his own. You wonder if he even heard you call him an idiot like he was your favourite person on the planet.
“It’s an evening in February, lovely, of course I’m cold.”
You watch his pink-tinged cheeks to see if the blush deepens at your best name for him, but you can’t tell if it’s just from the chill in the air. He starts unbuttoning his coat, leaning forward in the chair to take it off.
“Woah, slow down there Rem,” you insist, holding your hands out to him to stop him, “I am fine. Since when do you worry about me so much?”
He doesn’t answer straight away but he does put his arm back into his coat. He’s thinking about what to say, something you’ll always let him do, but it means he’s going to answer seriously. It’s worrying when you’d just been teasing him.
“I always worry about you, I think. Absentmindedly. Wondering if you feel alright, if you’re comfortable. You haven’t looked very comfortable this evening.”
He doesn’t lie to you, ever, but you’re pretty sure that’s the most honest Remus has ever been with you. He can’t even look at you either, just staring at the floor and scuffing his shoe against the chair leg.
“Remus…”
“I don’t like you cold. And I don’t like to think of you alone. Sorry. I know you don’t need looking after like that.”
And he sounds heartbroken enough to break your heart.
“No, I don’t need looking after,” you confirm softly, because it’s true. He’s always said you’re the most independent person he knows. But you still wind your arm through his and tug him into your side, “I’d quite like it if it’s you, though, I think. If you’ll let me return the favour.”
It’s always the returning that he’s not so adept with. Your affection and your time and your energy are all things he struggles to see he deserves. It’s mostly why you worry about him too.
“Don’t take your coat off for me though,” you warn, putting your head on his shoulder, “You idiot.”
This time he definitely hears you and he must hear how utterly smitten that word is. He’s your idiot. He has to know it by now.
“Okay. Coat stays on,” he murmurs, turning to press a kiss to your crown and then place his chin there, gentle as ever, “Also, I lied. I’m very glad we lost the others, by the way. Not sorry at all.”
So maybe he did lie to you sometimes. It was a lie you didn’t mind, even if you’d pretend to.
“Yeah? Why’s that now?”
He slowly nods his head until his nose is nuzzling you instead of his chin, and you feel another feather light kiss, this one near your ear.
“Like you lots. Even more than them,” he breathes, and you try not to melt into him then and there.
“Oh lovely,” you whisper, “Like you lots too.”

First Snow
Winter has come to Baldur's Gate and finally with it the first snow. You're excited about it - Astarion is rather reluctant...
MASTERLIST | AO3
Author's Note: Written for the "Snow & Ice" prompt for the BG3 Winter Holiday Challenge! We're kicking of the winter and holiday time with this first fill. Pairing: Astarion/GN!Tav (You) Warnings: none Wordcount: 1k
~~~ Temperatures in Baldur’s Gate had been dropping. There was ice forming now on the edges of the windows of the townhouse you shared with Astarion. And icy gusts of wind made you shiver now everytime you left the house.
Winter had come to the city and was firmly holding Baldur's Gate in its icy fingers. Some smaller side streams of the Chionthar close to town had already frozen over, inviting people to go ice skating. A winter market had opened its stalls somewhere centrally in the lower city. Windows were decorated with candles, ornaments and wreaths made of holly. And the townsfolk had started to wrap themselves in thick coats, wooly scarves and more comfy layers meant to keep them warm. For some the only thing still peeking out from all the layers of cloth, wool and fur were reddened cheeks and noses, coloured by the freezing temperatures.
But there was one thing still missing: snow.
And for the first time in your life were you actually excited for that to happen. Because now you were lucky enough to be in a position to enjoy the nice things that came with the colder weather. And you were so ready to make the best of it - together with your vampire soulmate.
When you had lived on the streets of the city you had always dreaded the coming winter because each year it had been cruel and painstaking to find enough food and shelter. But things were so different now. You had a permanent roof over your head now. And much more important: you had someone, just as permanent.
Someone to cuddle up with when the winter storms would be howling outside. Someone to decorate your home with. Someone to exchange gifts and trade kisses with during cold winter nights. Actually it all sounded pretty enticing.
Being with Astarion had made everything better. You never had been this excited about your future. And just as Astarion was ready to replace hurtful memories with new and pleasant ones, so were you.
So, tonight, you were going out. As you had done lots of times since you'd settled down. Astarion always found a reason to drag you out of the house and spoil you. You were planning to have a nice dinner, maybe stroll across the winter market and watch some of the brave fools thinking they’d be good at ice skating - at least as long as people were still out and about.
But the night was still young. The sun had barely set.
And this had been one of the first things that had made you change your opinion about winter: it allowed for so much more time and opportunities to go out with your vampire. Even if said vampire would have enjoyed that much more during summer time. You made the best out of it.
So when you stepped out of your front door, drawing your scarf and cloak closer around you, you immediately noticed one thing: Thick white flakes were drifting down from the dark night sky, illuminated by the street's mage light lanterns. The snowflakes fell slowly but steadily - as if they were trying to tell you that they wouldn’t be rushed, but would make their way surely. Light gusts of wind dragged around the small white tufts - sometimes taking them for an extra twirl before they landed on the ground.
Your eyes widened and you gasped as you beheld what was very much a fairytale snow flurry. “Snow”, you whispered silently and could barely believe how excited you’d become all of a sudden.
Then Astarion stepped out behind you. And you didn’t need to see the scowl to know it was there: “Ugh, snow.”
Immediately you turned around and gave him a look. You saw how he was fastening his cloak and threw a scarf around his head - he didn’t exactly have need for it but that surely didn’t stop him from another opportunity to make a fashion statement.
“What?”, he replied in annoyance. His lips were pressed together looking at the icy precipitation in displeasure.
“Don’t you think it’s beautiful?”
“My love, you are beautiful, life is beautiful - oh and I am certainly beautiful”, he started dramatically and for the last part sweeped a hand through his hair. “But this? Frozen water falling from the sky? I don’t see why that’s supposed to be beautiful of all things”, he finished with a scrunched up nose. And very pointedly a big snowflake landed on the tip of his nose right at this moment.
The vampire’s nose scrunched up even more when he felt the cold touch his skin and made a disgusted noise while you could barely contain a laugh.
“There, I can save you”, you said and stood on your tiptoes to kiss the tip of his nose and take care of this daunting snowflake.
“Cute”, Astarion replied when you stepped back again with a big genuine smile on his face. And then he quickly pulled you back in for a real kiss.
After the sweet kiss he pulled the cloak closer around you while you lovingly kept looking at him. He’d made that one for you specifically - picked your favourite colours, lined with sheep wool on the inside to keep you extra warm, marked with custom stitching. You had been in absolute awe when he had first showed it to you - he really was more talented than he would make anyone believe.
“Now, my love, at least take care you don’t turn into an icicle - I have standards when it comes to the temperature of my lovers”, the vampire lectured while he made sure you were appropriately wrapped, then pressed a quick little kiss to your forehead.
“Smoking hot?”, you asked with a sly grin. Astarion smirked back at you.
“At least above freezing would be acceptable”, Astarion replied and winked at you.
You stuck your tongue at him while Astarion laughed at you. Then you grabbed his hand and went out into the snow-filled cold winter night.
the soap stall
Rex x reader (gn)
summary: Going on a Christmas market with Rex!
warnings: none, just fluff
word count: ~890
advent calendar masterlist
a/n: this is the nineteenth fic for my advent calendar! i really wish i would have had more time to go on some christmas markets this year. well, maybe next year!
You are walking through a small alley.
Left and right are small little cottages, their roofs coated with a white layer of snow. Everything is lit up with yellow and orange shining fairy lights. It smells like cinnamon, mulled wine and food of different kinds.
You walk through different people, accidentally bumping in a few of them. Here and there are small kids running around you, chasing each other and laughing wholeheartedly.
It brings a smile to your lips.
Happy, you turn around as you come to a small clearing between all the people. Your hand is attached to Rex' and spends both of you some warmth. Smiling, you pull him closer to you, so he's standing right in front of you.
"What do you want to do first?" he asks as he comes to a stop, pulling you a little closer to him.
"Hmmm... What about eating something first? And then we could go back to the soap store. That woman had some cute looking ones!" you say, thinking about that cupcake shaped soap you saw earlier.
Rex nods in agreement. "Sounds good. Can we go and look at those wooden carvings again, after that?" he wants to know. "And what do you think about tarte flambée?" he suggests, and you nod enthusiastically.
Together, you walk over to the small market stall, deciding each for a tarte and waiting together, before standing at a small table next to each other, enjoying your hot food.
"Can I take a bite of yours?" you ask the blonde man. Rex smiles knowingly and nods, "Only when I can try yours, too."
Excited, you exchange your tartes, sighing at the new taste on your tongue, before changing it back.
"Mine's better," Rex thinks out loud after swallowing.
"Yeah, kinda true. But I like mine, too," you agree, nodding.
After you finish your food, you start walking again, holding each other's hands again. You love how his big hand wraps around yours so perfectly, keeping it warm. While you walk, you also start to lean on his shoulder a little bit, enjoying his closeness.
After quite some time, you pass the soap stall again, coming to a halt.
Fascinated, you look around the different soaps, enjoy different smells and talk to the elderly woman.
While you talk, you don't notice how Rex slips his hand out of yours, walking over to a stall next to the one with the soaps.
The kind woman tells you about her family business and how her uncle found it and about her two daughters started to help her out, now that her uncle passed away recently.
Amazed by the woman and the soap, you can't resist and buy a few creations, barely noticing how Rex comes back and holds his thumb up towards the woman.
Questioning, you raise your eyebrow, but Rex just smiles innocently and shrugs his shoulders before grabbing your hand again.
Together, you walk across different stalls, laughing and smiling, paying more attention to the ones you already found interesting the first time you walked through the small Christmas market.
Now and then, the two of you come to a halt in front of one of the small cottages, talk to the people and occasionally buy something.
Rex is particularly interested in a small shop with wooden carvings and asks the owner a few things about his tools and different kinds of woods before deciding that he wouldn't buy anything, much to the seller's disappointment.
As the evening slowly turns into night, you find yourself sitting next to each other on a small bench a few meters away from the crowded market. You share a cup of hot punch and a sweet crêpe with chocolate and fresh fruits and enjoy each other's company.
Between bites and sips, you smile at each other and exchange quiet words.
"Where did you go earlier?" you ask after the last bite of the delicious food.
Rex looks at you. His cheeks warm up a bit before he starts smiling again.
He shrugs his shoulders again, keeping quiet.
"Come on, don't keep your secrets! They're safe with me!" you try to convince him, but he doesn't relent: "It's a surprise."
A little bit frustrated, you sigh through your nose and start to pout playfully, a little bit annoyed at your own curiosity.
After some more time spent together and a few more things you bought, you feel like your toes and nose are going to fall off because of the cold. Together, you decide to head home and let the evening fade out lazily on the couch, Rex' secret already forgotten.
It's a few weeks later, when you finally learn about his little surprise.
While he got the kind woman to talk to you to distract you, he went off to the jeweler next to the soap stall and bought a necklace for you.
He had already seen it when you walked past the stall the first time. Not only did he know that you would absolutely love it, but he also found it as beautiful as you and couldn't stop imagining you with it. So in the end, it wasn't really a surprise that he took the first opportunity to run over to the stall and buy the piece of jewelry as a Christmas gift for you.
headfirst, fearless - will borgen
will borgen x reader (welcome to the party pt.2)
summary: you and will go on your first date
warnings: none i think but i’m not super happy with how this one turned out tbh
word count: 1.8k part one is here
your head wasn’t pounding nearly as much as you thought it would be when you woke up, and you smiled at the fact that the drunken haze hadn’t wiped the cute brunette from your memories. after having a shower and some breakfast, you got out your phone and texted will, as you promised matty you would.
you smiled at your phone as you texted will your address, and he replied saying he would pick you up at five that evening. it was 11 am now, giving you plenty of time to get ready.
you were excited to see will again, and thankful that you hadn’t been so drunk that you’d made a fool of yourself last night. at least if you did, it wasn’t enough to scare him away.
will texted you at exactly five o clock to say that he was waiting outside your place, and after one quick look in the mirror, you were out the door. you were wearing a simple outfit, just a warm sweater, your jacket, and some jeans, along with your winter boots and some gloves to combat the chill in the seattle winter air.
will was standing next to his car when you got outside and you greeted him with a smile as he opened the passenger door for you.
“thanks,” you smiled. “it’s really nice to see you again.”
“yeah, i had a lot of fun last night,” he agreed as he began to drive down the road. “i am looking forward to not being a drunken idiot in front of you today though,” he said with a laugh.
“you weren’t an idiot,” you laughed with him. “i was worried i was, so i guess we were both worried for no reason.”
“i guess so,” he smiled. at a red light, he took off his grey beanie to run his hands through his hair, before placing it back on his head.
“did you and the guys have fun celebrating last night?”
“yeah, we had a good time. matty was still barely awake when i left to pick you up.”
“you guys live together?” you asked, and he nodded.
“yeah, we have a house together next to yanni and his family’s. it’s nice being so close together.”
“that does sound nice,” you agreed.
you spent the short drive to the market getting to know eachother; mostly small stuff like where you were from originally, what kind of music you liked, what you did over the holidays.
the car pulled up outside the market, strings of thousands of lights decorating the trees, lampposts, and stalls for different shops.
“wow, it’s gorgeous.”
“yeah,” will smiled, thinking that as you looked at all the lights, you were still the prettiest thing there.
will held your hand as you walked through the thin layer of snow that coated the ground.
“i love the snow,” you smiled, watching as tiny snowflakes twirled through the air, falling from the sky and covered the roofs of each market stall. there were vendors selling baked goods, crafts, hot chocolate, and so much stuff that you couldn’t even see everything at once. there was even a small skating rink set up, not big enough for hockey, but large enough that people could comfortably skate around.
“what do you want to see first?” will asked.
•
your toes had gone quite cold after about two hours of walking around the market, and even the hot chocolate you’d bought only marginally helping fight off the chill of january.
you had bought a couple craft items, such as a handknit potholder from a sweet old lady, as well as some cookies that you and will shared while watching people skate around.
“do you know how to skate?” will asked, and you shook your head.
“no,” you said with a laugh. “i think i would hurt myself if i tried.”
“you said you trust me?” he asked, extending a hand to you as he stood up.
“yes, but we don’t have skates.”
“even easier then,” he smiled, leading you out into the ice. it thankfully wasn’t too slippery where you felt like you were going to fall down, but enough that you could easily shuffle around. will ‘skated’ backwards as he held onto both of your hands, making sure you didn’t slip. somehow, you knew if you fell he would catch you, and it took away any fear you had in that moment.
“i don’t know how you do this, never mind while trying to shoot the puck and not get hit.”
“practice,” he smiled. “it’s kind of like second nature to me at this point.”
after a few more minutes you felt a little more steady on your feet. still , you didn’t travel too far from the edge of the rink, and never let go of will. you couldn’t imagine the added difficulty of trying to balance on skates.
“you should come to a game sometime. the guys want to see you again almost as much as i did.”
“really?” you asked, and he nodded.
“yeah. just let me know and i can get you tickets,” will smiled. “and yeah, the guys think you’re great.”
“thanks! they seem really cool too.”
“they kept asking me when i was going to see you again,” he said, and the pink blush on his cheeks from the cold hid the slight embarrassment in his face.
“well you can tell them that we went out today. and i don’t know about you but i’m having a really good time,” you smiled, hoping he felt the same.
“me too,” he smiled, and you breathed a sigh of relief. “it is getting cold though, so it might be time for me to take you home.”
“okay,” you agreed, and he helped you off the ice. you walked hand in hand back to his car, rubbing you hands together once you got inside as you waited for him to start the engine.
“what is it?” you asked, his eyes lingering on your face with a smile as he waited for the windows to defrost.
“you have a snowflake on your cheek,” he said, and reached over to wipe it off your cheekbone with his thumb. his hand lingered on your face, and your heart sped up.
“you know all i could think about in the cab ride home last night was how much i wish i had kissed you,” you whispered, and his eyebrows raised raised.
“really?” he hummed. “that’s good to know,” he smiled. “do you want me to kiss you now?”
you nodded, and will leaned closer, gently pressing his lips to yours, the taste of hot chocolate on his tongue. you smiled as he pulled away, the kiss definitely worth the wait.
“i really wanted to kiss you last night too, just for the record.”
“good to know,” you repeated what he’d said, and he smiled before putting the car in gear and starting the drive back to your place.
it was only around 8:30 when you pulled up outside your place, and you didn’t want to say goodbye just yet.
“do you want to come in for a bit?” you asked, hoping it wasn’t too forward.
“sure,” he agreed thankfully, turning off the car and following after you up to your apartment.
his phone beeped in his pocket and he glanced at it with a laugh.
“matty’s asking where i am,” he smiled, and you laughed as you turned the kettle on in case either of you decided to make coffee or tea.
“you didnt tell him where you were going?” you asked, and he shook his head.
“no,” he said with a laugh. “i was worried he might try to tag along.” you laughed as you walked over to the couch and sat down.
“while i did like hanging out with your friends, it was nice to hang out just the two of us,” you admitted, and will walked over and sat down on the couch next to you.
“yeah, it was.” he watched as you shivered slightly. “are you still cold?”
“a little,” you grabbed a blanket from the basket next to you couch, but will pulled you gently into his side, wrapping his arms around you as you pulled the blanket over your laps.
“better?” he asked.
“yes, thank you,” you hummed as you snuggled into him.
“maybe i just wanted to steal the blanket from you,” he teased, as it now rested over his lap as well.
“well if that was the case you could’ve just asked,” you laughed, looking up at him.
will leaned down and pressed a sweet kiss to your lips, and then another on the tip of your nose.
“i’m kidding,” he smiled. “that’s just a bonus.” you hummed softly as you grabbed the remote and passed it to will, deciding on something to watch together.
about an hour into the movie, will looked down and noticed that you were asleep, and smiled to himself.
he sent matty a quick text saying that he wouldn’t be home, and not to wait up for him, before kissing the top of your head.
he ignored matty’s response, and took of his beanie, running a hand through his hair to smooth it out, before he reached over and shut off the lamp. the movement caused you to stir, and he smiled at you.
“hey,” he whispered. “uh, i told matty i was staying out because i don’t want to wake you, but if you want me to go that’s okay.”
“no, that’s okay. i want you to stay,” you stood up, grabbing wills hand and leading him in the direction of your room. “but this couch is terrible for sleeping.”
“bedroom on the first date?” he teased. and you pushed his chest lightly as you grabbed pyjamas from your dresser, finding and old grey t-shirt that would probably fit will as well and handing it to him.
“you’re lucky you’re cute, or i’d make you sleep on the couch for that.”
“sorry,” he raised his hands with a smile, and you went to the bathroom to get changed.
you came back out to see will sitting on the end of the bed, having changed into the shirt you gave him. you walked over and stopped in front of him, and will placed his hands on your hips, his fingertips gently brushing against your skin under them hem of your top. you leaned down to kiss him softly, and he smiled as you yawned slightly after pulling back.
“tired?” he asked, and you nodded, crawling into bed and pulling him down to lay next to you.
“come here,” you giggled as you pulled him into your arms, his legs tangling with yours beneath the blanket as he kissed you again.
“goodnight will,” you mumbled as you snuggled into him, your face resting on his shoulder as his arms wrapped around your waist. he hummed softly as you placed a kiss on his neck.
“goodnight,” he smiled.
One word daemon prompt: Head
part one
The rain was coming down pretty hard, a steady wash of noise against the tin roof. From experience - and a glance at the grey-green clouds stampeding down the hills on the far side of the valley - it was only set to get worse.
It was a very pretty and welcome sight after the recent dry months and Imogen was all set to enjoy it—pot of water boiling on the stove, teapot ready with a small measure of the tea-leaves she’d traded dearly for at the market some weeks back, old Tinkertop radio crooning in the corner—when she recalled the terse argument she’d had yesterday with that son-of-a-rooster Denklin, and that he had agreed to finally return the equipment she’d loaned. She swore. Knowing him, he’d left it in the south paddock; townsfolk didn’t like coming to the farm, much less all the way to the barn, and Denklin wouldn’t go out of his way to help her.
Imogen weighed her options, fingers drumming against the tabletop, and stood with a sigh. Her feet and back were aching after a long day of repairs but, she smiled wrly at the thought, there was no rest for the wicked.
Clicking off the stove, she scrawled a note to her father—gone to south paddock—and left it on the kitchen table for him to find, pinned beneath the sugar pot. The front door stuck stubbornly when she tried to open it. She kicked it hard in the bottom corner and tried again; this time, the door gave way, but not without a rusty complaint. Imogen added the sticking door to her very long list of chores and sat at the top of the stairs to pull on her boots.
She was partway done lacing up her boots when the gate swung open and closed. Her father, Relvin, trudged up the path. Filumena, his sheepherder dæmon, trudged alongside him. They looked tired and muddy and miserable—hair and fur sodden, dripping into their eyes—and paid little mind to their surroundings, making a path for the dry space beneath the eaves.
Imogen stood and went inside. From the box of gear they kept by the front door, she pulled a sweater for herself and two fluffy towels.
Relvin startled when she re-emerged, a soft oath escaping him, but softened when she offered him the towels. He knelt, taking great care to wrap Filumena in the first one and rubbing her dry. She wuffed a quiet comment to him and he paused in his actions, glancing back over his shoulder at Imogen. Taking in her boots and the sweater she pulled over her head, he frowned.
‘Are you headed out?’ He had a quiet voice and spoke slowly, tone grave, like he had laid all his words to rest long ago and rousing them took a great effort.
Imogen nodded. ‘Gotta check the south paddock. Denklin said he’d bring the tools back but I haven’t seen ‘em. I left a note.’
‘Right. Okay. It’s bad out there,’ he cautioned.
Imogen nodded but collected one of the hooded lanterns that dangled on the eaves anyway. They both knew the tools couldn’t stay out there through the storm—either lightning would strike and melt them, or simple rust would eat them up over the next few weeks, and they couldn’t well afford either. They also both knew that Imogen would be fine in the storm.
‘Shall we saddle Flora for you?’ Filumena asked. She was a softly-spoken dæmon, even moreso than Relvin, but concern moved her now.
Imogen glanced out into the storm. There had been no lightning yet but her skin prickled with it. It was coming. She shook her head. ‘Better not risk it. Thank you, though.’
Filumena nodded. She glanced toward her other half and Relvin met her eyes, something unspoken being shared between them. His lips thinned but, when Filumena pushed her head into his chest, he laid a hand on her head, stroked square fingers over the rust-coloured fur of her ears. Her tail wagged. Imogen returned her attention to the sky and the storm and ignored the way jealousy stung, searing hot, at the sight of their natural closeness.
‘If you’re set on headed out,’ Relvin said, ‘take my coat.’
Standing, he shrugged out of it and passed it over. Relvin Temult had been a big man, once, before age and life had worried away at him, leaving him stooped and small. Imogen did not look much like her father—there was some likeness in the shape of the eyes, the furrow between her brows, and the thick head of hair, if not the colour—and she stood a little taller. With the extra layer of the sweater, his coat fit just fine. It was wet and heavy but already she could feel how the oilskin would keep her warm.
She nodded to her father and Filumena and—lantern in hand, hood up—stepped out into the storm.
//
Striding as fast as she dared down the fenceline, Imogen made her way to the south paddock. The land sloped and she had to keep one hand on the railing as rain and mud made the walk treacherous, sucking at her boots and the hem of her father’s coat. The lantern light was near useless, encompassing her in a watery grey sphere for mere feet before the rain battered it to the ground. It made a certain amount of sense, Imogen thought as she paused at the top of the paddock, to return home. She had hoped that the rain wouldn’t get to the tools—that she would have a chance at recovering them before the real storm hit—but evidently not. On the other hand, she was already soaked through. What was another quarter hour in the rain? Freezing, she thought, and her mind drifted back to her blissfully hot tea.
Imogen hesitated, unsure. One hand gripped tight to the fence post at her side, helping to keeping her balance against the battering wind. Her other hand, presumably, was still holding onto the lantern but it was hard to tell since her hand had long since gone numb to the stinging flecks of rain.
She was standing at the boundary there when the sky ripped open, the storm's first bolt of lightning striking across the sky.
The shape of it burned into the backs of her eyes, fading slowly. Imogen blinked the vision away hurriedly, searching the sky. Was that — was he here? She breathed in deep, searching for the connection her father and everyone else said was so persistent, so powerful, that tether between themself and their dæmon. As ever, there was nothing.
Imogen search a moment longer. Phengarion did not always return in a storm. She knew that. It was foolish to watch for him. Even so, she found herself moving deeper into the paddock, set on working through the next fifteen minutes of this storm. Her attention turning heavenward with every flash and strike of lightning, eyes searching for that flash of red that signalled his presence.
She saw nothing of him. But the hope gripped her with each strike and so she stepped down to the furthest corner of the property, lingering, waiting out the storm.
She found the tools there at the boundary—under a tarpaulin, which was something, she supposed—and hefted the first lot onto her shoulder, carrying them up to the tool shed in a handful of trips. The storm grew. Lightning crashed and struck the land around her, one or two in the first few minutes, and then more and more. It ignored the metal tools—it would not strike much of anything in the twenty, thirty yards around her. Not when it could have Imogen. A great silver arm of lightning reached down, bolts like outstretched fingers, carding through her hair when her hood slipped. The lightning was warm and the scars on her left hand and arm prickled—not quite pain—as all the nerves lit up, but it didn’t hurt.
The little splinters of lightning remained as the immense column flickered and vanished. They twined around her, affectionate, spiky.
Imogen ignored them. She batted away a particularly sharp bolt like she would a mosquito and opened the door to the tool shed. The ambient glow of the lightning flooded into the shed, illuminating everything within in sharp detail—the somewhat lopsided shelves, the buckets and tools, the water-logged sack of grain Imogen would have to toss now, the woman hiding in there.
Imogen screamed.
The woman flinched, curling deeper into the corner of the shed, and from under her sodden cloak launched a whirlwind of inky feathers and claws and teeth, a horrific shifting growing nightmare vision—bird, rat, dog, snake, all of it black and white and oozing. The instant before it would have struck Imogen—staggering back, tripping over the end of her father’s coat—it grew great bat-like wings and swooped up, landing on the roof of the shed with a rattling hiss from somewhere deep in its horrible body.
‘Pate, no!’
The dæmon—was that what it was? how old was this girl?—hunched, chimeric in its awful form. It had a huge dog-like body and the wings of a bat, or dragon. The lower jaw was the snarling head of a dog as well but the top of it was white bone. A rat tail lashed behind it like a thick, oily rope of flesh. Every bit of the daemon oozed and dripped with a tarry sludge that vanished into nothingness. It was like it was bubbling with the effort of holding onto its form. Imogen could only stare as the wings bubbled, burst, shifted into enormous raven wings.
‘What the fuck?’
Inside the shed, the woman - girl? - moved. She crept to the door and held out her hands to her dæmon. ‘Pate, darling boy, come down from there.’ The dæmon growled. She put her hands on her hips and tutted up at it like it was a misbehaving kitten, not a huge monster.
It had no eyes. It had no eyes, Imogen thought again, astonished. The sockets of the skull glowed with a strange dull light.
‘I’m s-sorry,’ she stammered. ‘I didn’t mean to - I didn’t know anyone was in there.’
‘Of course you didn’t. I was hiding,’ the woman said, perfectly matter-of-fact. ‘And I do apologise for Pate - he’s a little protective and we had such a scare in the storm.’
Mere seconds before, Imogen would not have imagined that she would take her eyes off the hunched, growling dæmon. She would not have imagined that anything could convince her that it would be safe to do so—and yet by the time the woman stopped speaking and turned back to scold her “darling boy” some more, Imogen’s attention was firmly on her.
She was unlike anyone Imogen had ever met. Certainly not a young girl, no matter that her dæmon was unsettled. She was a tall woman with a long neck, eyes as dark and tremendous as the clear night sky, and so frail in her build as to suggest that the merest puff of wind would shatter her to pieces. There had been a moment, when Imogen laid eyes on her, that she thought her to be quite a strange looking woman, but now she saw that her stark features—an aquiline nose, a wide mouth, powerfully dark brows, each on their own enough to overpower a lesser face—worked in concert to create dazzling, horrific expressions. No one else in the world had ever felt as wretched as this woman did, Imogen was sure of that, as a wretched expression settled so naturally onto her face. No one else in the world had ever looked on her with the barest tremor of hope to their lips, as if Imogen were the most powerful person in the world, solely capable of helping this woman.
‘You can’t stay here,’ Imogen blurted.
The woman smiled, sad and unsurprised. She gathered the black length of her skirt in her hands and curtsied prettily. ‘We understand. Again, I’m very sorry for trespassing and we certainly never would have except that the storm was so frightening and we didn’t know where else to go and—’ She stopped, peered down at Imogen, who still lay where she had tripped to the muddy ground. ‘Darling, did you know there’s lightning in your hair?’
Imogen nodded.
The woman blinked big, black eyes. Then, as if lightning in one’s hair was neither strange nor frightening, she shrugged. ‘We shall depart, of course, but perhaps you could tell us the best direction, somewhere we might hide?’
‘M-My place, my house.’ Imogen groaned, an ache making itself felt in her back where she had landed poorly. She pushed up onto her feet and, bracing one hand on her hip, pointed in the direction of the farmhouse. A bolt of lightning swirled around her pointing finger and launched in the same direction, fizzing out in the rain. ‘We live over there. You’re welcome to stay out the storm with us.’
The woman stared. Surprise and hope warred with suspicion. After a moment, she said, voice trembling, ‘That’s awfully kind of you but…are you sure? I don’t wish to put anyone out or intrude.’
Imogen snorted. ‘If I didn’t already know you were new to town,’ she drawled, a tired smile curling her lips, ‘that would’ve given you away.’
‘Whatever do you mean?’
Imogen hesitated. Shook her head. ‘There’s plenty of space, that’s all. I promise. Besides.’ She lifted her hands. ‘Do you want to stay out here? In this?’
Atop the shed, the dæmon - Pate - shrunk to the size of a rat with a sick squelch. He jumped down onto his partner’s shoulder and squeaked. The woman lifted a hand to pat him gently and whatever manners, whatever hesitation, kept her ill-at-ease abruptly gave way. She met Imogen’s eyes, her own dark and wet and shining, and smiled quite beautifully. ‘Pate is quite right. You are most generous, and we would be so very grateful to escape the storm. Thank you.’
to you alone
emile / estinien - 2k words endwalker spoilers, set after msq quest the color of joy
It’s difficult, with Estinien this close, to think anything other than, What are we doing?
The moon sets early.
Emile only notices because he keeps glancing at the window, watching the light pass through and fade as the evening stretches on. He’d expected a quiet night alone upon their return to Sharlayan, but the simple happiness of his friends surrounding him surpasses any desire for solitude. He’d always prefer to watch Alisaie joke around with Raha, their happy chatter filling the spaces in between bites of food. Alphinaud sips at his tea across from Emile, and it reminds him of all the places he’s seen the same sight: the Rising Stones, the Fortemps Manor, the Crystarium.
Krile watches with the same kind of amusement, something borne of recognizing peace while it lasts. Emile feels its warmth in his chest, and he lets himself savor the moment as he sips his own cup of tea. It would be perfect, if only for one thing—
“Lest you wonder, we’d invited Estinien as well,” Alphinaud offers, but his impression of him does little to settle the unease that stirs in Emile’s chest. Neither does Krile’s designation of Lone Wolf.
He works up a smile in response—some part of him wishes it was that simple.
The problem is, they were alone together in Radz-at-Han. They were alone for the first time since they sailed to Sharlayan, and it was too easy to fall back into it. Just you and me, then—Emile pestered him to play tour guide until he gave in, and for a moment it felt like they could just be themselves, walking through the busy markets, taking in the sights, Estinien pointing out the different foods he’s tried.
They were nearly separated at one point walking through the crowd, but Estinien reached out and placed a hand on Emile’s lower back—a single tether between them, and Emile swears he can still feel his touch.
Whatever is changing between them may be quiet, but it is hard to ignore.
Perhaps that’s what makes Estinien’s absence even more noticeable. Emile knows him so well but he doesn't know about this, and though it feels like the wrong time to be asking the question, he doesn’t know if it can wait.
For now he settles into the comfort of having his friends surround him, letting himself enjoy this brief moment of respite. It’s after they leave, when he still can’t let it go from his mind, that he realizes that he needs to find him. He climbs out the window and carefully picks his way over the ledge, blowing out a frustrated breath at Estinien’s penchant for heights as he pulls himself up to the roof.
Of course Estinien is there. He sits on the far edge, his back to Emile as he looks out at the harbor. Starlight coats over him, a blue echo above the golden glow of lanterns on the street below. Emile freezes for a moment, the cold night air pulling at his shirt as he watches him, and he has to swallow back the affection that rises up his throat.
“I thought I might find you here,” he murmurs when he crosses the distance between them. Estinien doesn’t look at him, but he angles his head towards him, his hair now bound and exposing the line of his ear down to his jaw, a sharp curve cut from light. It exposes his neck, revealing pale skin that Emile can’t let himself look at for too long. Instead, he takes a deep breath and sits beside him. “You missed dinner.”
In the absence of an immediate response, the silence of the night is dotted only by the distant sounds of movement in the harbor, voices carrying from the paths below them, but then comes Estinien’s deep voice: “I needed a moment to think.”
“Oh,” Emile says, and the uncertainty he’d been feeling gives way to doubt. It punches through him, and he swallows hard. “If you’d like to be alone, I don’t mind—”
“‘Tis all right.”
He leaves it at that, and as many times as they’ve sat in shared silence, Emile doesn’t know if it’s ever felt uncomfortable. Maybe he’s overthinking it, but Estinien still just stares at the view before them, and Emile follows his gaze, wishing he’d remembered to bring his cloak—though he doubts that he would’ve kept it for himself, anyway.
The chill of the night freezes the air itself, and stray snowflakes drift around them despite the clear sky. Emile’s eyes linger on the stars for a moment, at the skewed shapes of the constellations he knows by heart, and then he looks out at the water. The ocean blurs deep blue into black, a distant push and pull that sinks towards the horizon until it disappears entirely.
His skin itches as he tries to think of what to say, but how do you talk about something like this? Estinien seems lost in his own thoughts, still leaving Emile with only his profile lined in ghostly white, and it wears on so long that it feels like it passes them entirely.
“Estinien,” he says, his voice so much quieter this time. “I don’t mean to intrude. You merely have to say the word and I’ll go, I promise I won’t take offense.”
But the sharp cut of Estinien’s gaze finally turns to him, intent and steeled with resolve. Emile wants to understand but he feels overwhelmed by the way their eyes meet, and he realizes that for the first time since they were on that damned ship, they’re truly alone.
“Stay,” Estinien says. “Please.”
It leaves no room for question, and neither of them look away. It brings Emile back to that place they were those last few nights they had together, and he feels his heart pick up a beat, wanting only that closeness again. He swallows the desire back, clearing his throat as he searches his mind for something to say. It’s difficult, with Estinien this close, to think anything other than, What are we doing?
It’s in his eyes, shining silver in the stars’ reflection. He always looks beautiful in this light, which is when Emile knows him best, where they have found each other again and again, and that has to mean something, doesn’t it? There has to be a simple answer, here.
“Do you—,” he starts, but hesitates. Do you want to talk about it? he was going to ask, but it sounds so foolish in his head. “What were you thinking about?”
Estinien is quiet for a long time, but then comes a single word: “You.”
“Me?” he repeats. “Why?”
Estinien’s brows dip down at the center. “Do you truly need to ask?”
When Emile thinks about it, he supposes he doesn’t. In his mind, he sees the two of them dancing driftless into the night, drawn in and out of each other's space until they lingered, faces close. There was that last embrace, the strength of Estinien’s grip around him, his hands bunched in Emile’s sweater, and his breath against his neck. In his most recent memory: there’s the sound of Estinien’s rumble of a laugh as he led him through Radz-at-Han, his gaze on him each time he glanced over his shoulder, and his fingertips just barely touching the exposed skin at his waist.
Emile’s breath shakes on an exhale as he looks down at his hands in his lap, and he admits, “I cannot deny that things have felt different between us as of late, but I dare not let myself hope for more. In truth, I’m afraid to want what I cannot have.”
“Emile,” Estinien murmurs, and Emile’s attention snaps back up to him. His expression has softened, eyes crinkled at the corners, and there’s something so gentle about the way he says his name, something that contrasts the rasp of his voice. He lifts a hand to Emile’s cheek, thumb brushing the corner of his mouth as he cups his face, eyes searching his. He breathes out, “You need not fear.”
Emile watches him until he can’t take it, and he turns into his open hand, closing his eyes as he presses a kiss to the rough, calloused skin of his palm. When he opens them, there is something in Estinien’s eyes that he’s never seen before, something open and wanting. He draws his hand away, his fingertips cool along the heat of Emile’s skin as he traces them down to his neck, and Emile’s all but certain that he can feel the rapid thrum of his pulse underneath—his nerves alive and rushing through him, giving away his desire.
“May I?” Estinien asks, glancing down at his mouth before returning his gaze.
Emile nods, just the slightest tip of his chin as he leans in. “Please.”
The gap between them isn’t so far, after all.
Emile’s eyes fall closed as Estinien kisses him, the touch of his lips far more gentle than Emile had expected. He feels the warmth of it spread through him against the cold of the night—warm like honey, like the morning sun, like home. It surrounds him: the proximity of Estinien’s body, his breath against his skin, the way his fingers curl around the back of his neck to pull him closer. It’s what passes between them: the confirmation that they both want this just as much as each other, that it’s more than just a kiss, it’s a beginning.
The world around them feels so far away that it hardly matters at all.
Emile licks at his bottom lip, every thought held captive by the slight gasp Estinien makes as he parts his mouth, as he lets him in, as he shifts so he can wind his arms around him. Emile responds in kind, fingers pressing into his back until they’re chest to chest, and it deepens as they find a rhythm, something slow and languid that builds too strong. A soft moan crawls up Emile’s throat, and every beat of his pounding heart says, this feels right.
They linger forehead to forehead when they part, sharing the same space for a moment longer before Emile pulls back, and he marvels at Estinien’s messy hair, the shine of his lips, the way his eyes blink slowly back into focus.
Emile reaches up to smooth part of his bangs down before he leans in to kiss him one more time. This one is brief—something chaste, something sweet—and he feels himself grin after. He has to bite down on it, unable to contain his happiness, and he clears his throat before he asks, “How long have you been up here? ‘Tis freezing.”
“I thought you would bring your cloak.”
“I left it inside,” Emile murmurs, but he pauses as his words catch up with him. “You knew I would find you?”
His lips curve up at the corners. “You always do.”
“Oh,” Emile says absently, and his face warms with a blush that he thinks he should be embarrassed by, but he can’t find it in him. He keeps watching Estinien and Estinien watches him back, and there’s an intimacy in that, in knowing what his lips taste like, in not being afraid to look. He watches Estinien and he fights a shiver, because he wasn’t exaggerating about how cold the night is, and all he wants is to warm up. “Come here.”
Estinien draws closer, shifting over until there’s no space left between them. He fits himself into Emile’s side, wrapping his arms around his waist, and Emile rests his cheek against the top of his head as he closes his eyes, shutting out the night, shutting out the view, until it’s just them. He can see it so easily—the two of them curled up together on the roof, the stars turning above them, and he feels like he’s outside himself, watching them breathe slow and deep against each other.
They won’t stay much longer, not with the temperature still dropping, not with the new weight tomorrow brings, but this is its own kind of promise, a way of saying, No matter what happens, we’ll have each other. Hold onto me through the night.
Emile presses a kiss into his hair, and for now, it’s enough.
Ok, I see your DPxDC tags and raise you...
.
.
Percy Jackson.
Legacy of Thanatos Danny, who triggered his latent Death abilities in the portal that half-killed him, and ends up being found out later than most the kids at Camp Half-Blood.
Simply because the Death Vibes in Amity are so strong not many monsters would see a single demigod as being worth being possibly made into silly string and have to weave themselves back into shape in Taryarus again.
This means Danny has Experience. Has had a chance to shine his battle instincts, and train up his powers, and give his divine heritage a good workout.
And now he's being tossed at a bunch of feral children, all of them bushy-tailed and starry-eyed at the sheer Presence this older demigod exudes. He's one of their leaders now. Everyone's older brother.
Except he always does or has the weirdest shit. Like how he's ALWAYS spotted in the mornings floating above the Big House roof, staring up at the fading stars, and then showed up to breakfast a couple hours later wearing a coat decorated with unmelting snowflakes.
Or that one time he set out as the Older Supervision for a quest with a group of younger campers. The Weird Death Boy to rival famous Nico di Angelo doesn't wear a Stygian Steel sword like the others might expect. No, he summons dory spears made of ice. The carvings on the handle have the weirdest creatures on them, and when asked, Danny will absolutely launch into the wildest stories of yeti doctors, flame-haired siren girls with a voice to match an angry Olympian, plant chicken entities set on turning Humans into nutrients for a plant children army. Ghosts of long-dead Gods that have a penchant for being cryptic bastards.
The one about Pandora becomes their favorite story to ask Danny for, while they're on the road. He talks about her as if he met her personally. Has a xyphos that he claims to have been personally gifted to him by her dead spirit after he proved himself in combat.
One mission of their oldest and strongest currently available had to take out a drakon. One Clarisse la Rue, famous Drakon-slayer, takes the fight to the damned thing, keeping it's attention on her so the others can flank it.
The monster's side erupts with arrows shot from a distance, all of them sinking jagged points into it's scaly hide, peeling back scales and muscle whenever it tried to rip them out. Their only child of Apollo is a little busy driving a spear into it's side to shoot, so Danny grabs a bow out of nowhere, and it looks so fucking unbalanced, one side bigger than the other ("it's called a "daikyu" and I made this one during an adventure with this old bow master I met once!"). But it shoots with deadly precision.
Danny also tends to disappear from camp when no one's looking, and come back later, always perfectly on time for events, wearing the oddest outfits, like big fluffy fur coats with the boots to match, or a red leather jacket and skinny jeans that look almost glued to his hips. Or the personal favorite of many that saw it: biker leathers, riding in on a bike that revved itself out of camp borders and into a portal after Danny dismounted it with a gentle pat to the fuel tank.
One time he shows up to a bonfire carrying a bowl of dried figs to share with the few that stayed in camp all year, instead of just for summer, tosses a handful into the fire, claiming them to be for "Grandpa Than", "The Old Clock", "Auntie Dora" and "Frosty the Snow Yeti", and lays back to look up and point out the co installations visible above, until his eyes are glowing an eerie green and his freckles lighting up a soft icy blue in tune with his worryingly slow heartbeat.
If you let Danny out of your sight, chances are that he'll come back with weird shit that he "got at a market" or was gifted to him by family and friends from somewhere that Danny STILL won't explain.
(The red jacket has every child of Aphrodite turning around to stare at him though, so he can't claim that one was "just a friend" or "I got it at a seasonal market stall")
The Hermes Cabin has a whole Conspiracy Board of planning how to follow Danny to wherever he goes when he "goes shopping". Except he seems to disappear between the trees, as if invisible. And then comes back with watermelon cubes and a glass of something that looks like battery acid. No one wants to try that one.
Underworld kids are just Built Different when it comes to what they can eat, and who can say if day-glow juice isn't some secret Thanatos-exclusive recipe? No one's gonna ask Nico for pomegranates, so We Don't Ask about the Weird Juice.
I will NEVER not want Danny to have Multicultural Zone Vibez.
Like? To just... just HAVE shit you CAN NOT GET in "this" Reality.
Is it a tee-shirt? The podcast he's listening too? Those snacks? Maybe it's the tea! He has a distinct accent. No one can place it. He talks about hitting up The Market. Is suuuuper vague about WHICH market, but it sounds awesome. He apparently gets like? ALL his shit from there.
Amazing deals on everything.
You've been over to his place. The linens look like something out of a fantasy novel. HAND MADE sorta shit. Like? It must have taken, what, months? Years? To make that? He got it "cheap", supposedly, because the shop owner is no longer in their "space phase".
None of his plates match. Some look futuristic, some are hand made, a few look CARVED. Is this bone?
"Don't worry about it."
You recognize maybe a third of the movies he owns, AT BEST. But you could have SWORN like three of them weren't out yet. And details are off in two others.
The dude is weird. His PLACE is weird. His FOOD is all knock off brands you've never heard off. They've gotta be. There's fruits you can't recognize in the fridge and he uses a vegetable you've never seen before in the stir fry. Tastes pretty good. Kinda garlicky. But, like?
You've NEVER seen him use any of them local grocery stores. You're half convinced, that even with a gun to his head? He would be able to tell you WHERE THEY ARE.
Dude.
And, yeah, it's a major city. A DC city of your choice. His weirdness lvl is so low, if constant, that it barely registers. Frankly? Everyone just thinks "ah, yes, an immigrant from... somewhere. Don't be a dick about it, me." And moves on. Gives it no further thought. But?
Eventually he's gonna make friends~
They ARE gonna want to know more about him.
And they're gonna realize he's WEIRD AF. Give them the LORE, Danny. It's driving them crazy!!
@hdgnj @babbling-babull @hypewinter @lolottes @mutable-manifestation
#dp x pjo#for the more observant of you:#spot the hints at a Johny 13/Danny/Kitty polycule :)#Danny has the solution for every problem squirrelled away#if he remembers it exists#i kinda wanna have the Stolls be the ones to successfully follow Danny into the Zone Market#they have a wild time of it#and Danny is happy so gush about it to his new friends#but no one believes them on half the shit they claim they saw there#the biker couple stealing Danny to go attend a bike race?#it's bonkers but they've seen Danny wander back into camp smelling of bike fuel and with a hickey or two#so that's more believable#i hope this makes SOME justice to the orignal prompt? it's like 1 a.m and i HAD to write it unlees i forget it :/#long post
How Market Trends Present Opportunities in the Maleic Anhydride Market
The global maleic anhydride market is projected to reach a size of USD 4,386.1 million in 2023, with expectations of expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from 2024 to 2030. This growth can be largely attributed to the increasing demand for unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), which are a primary component in the production of fiberglass-reinforced resins. These resins find extensive applications in various industries, including automotive and marine sectors, as well as in construction products like sinks, countertops, and bathtubs.
In North America, the United States stands out as the largest consumer of maleic anhydride, commanding a revenue share of 82.9% in 2023. This dominance is linked to the rapid expansion of key industries such as agriculture, automotive, and construction. According to TST Europe, total construction spending in the U.S. reached approximately $1.98 trillion in 2023, marking a 7.4% increase from the previous year. This growth was particularly pronounced in nonresidential construction, which saw a significant 17.6% year-over-year increase, while residential construction spending experienced a decline of 3% due to rising interest rates and inflationary pressures. Additionally, the U.S. consistently constructs structures valued at over USD 1.8 trillion annually, which is expected to further bolster the maleic anhydride market in the country.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of the Maleic Anhydride Market
Drivers, Opportunities, and Restraints
Unsaturated polyester resins play a critical role in the automotive sector, serving as body fillers that facilitate rapid reconstruction and repair of damaged vehicle components. They are also used as putty in car painting processes, ensuring a smooth finish by masking any imperfections. UPRs provide excellent adhesion for paint, which enhances the durability of the coating applied. Specifically, these resins are commonly utilized in the repair of bumpers, doors, roofs, and interior components affected by accidents. As global car accident rates continue to rise, the demand for UPR is anticipated to increase, subsequently driving up the need for maleic anhydride.
Moreover, maleic anhydride is integral to a variety of industries, including automotive, building and construction, pharmaceuticals, and personal care and cosmetics. The rising demand for unsaturated polyester resins in automotive and construction applications is poised to significantly boost the market for maleic anhydride. Additionally, the incorporation of additives in the automotive sector aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions is likely to further fuel the demand for this chemical compound.
The production of maleic anhydride primarily relies on feedstocks such as n-butane and benzene. The global prices of these feedstocks are closely tied to the trends in crude oil and naphtha prices. The volatility of crude oil has been a significant factor contributing to the fluctuations in benzene prices. Consequently, the pricing of crude oil and the downstream demand from various industries have a considerable impact on the global petroleum derivatives market, influencing the availability and cost of maleic anhydride.
The maleic anhydride market is positioned for growth driven by robust demand from multiple industries, particularly in applications utilizing unsaturated polyester resins. As the automotive and construction sectors expand, and as new regulations drive the need for more efficient materials, the outlook for maleic anhydride remains positive, with ample opportunities for development and innovation.
