This video has an in-depth explanation of poverty’s affects on the brain, and how exactly poverty causes underdeveloped brains, mental illness, and even obesity. It also touches on many other affects of poverty and provides ideas of how we can prevent poverty, also what the government is doing, and what is working. I found this video insightful, useful, concerning and thought provoking.

This is a personal article that informally addresses child poverty in a relatable way. This will be especially useful in my essay because it provides a different narrative. The author describes a hospital waiting room in a low income area and this puts a visual in my head of the physical state that poverty can put people in.

I chose this article because it talks about how low income contributes to poverty. It shows the statistics of New Zealand’s income, comparing the high and low income across genders, age and ethnicity.

New Zealand does not have an official poverty measure. However, low-income thresholds or poverty lines can be used.

This video demonstrates how stressful dealing with living in poverty can be for both parents and their children. When this goes on for long periods of time their mental health suffers greatly, which is what can lead to problems such as alcohol and drug addictions as well as suicides.

This graph shows the link between poverty and incarceration. Peoples median incomes who are incarcerated are significantly lower to those who are not imprisoned. I found this upsetting yet intriguing, which has made me wonder the cause of this exactly.

I chose this video because it views how so many children get sick and also ways to prevent child poverty. Also how Sweden operates with putting their children first.

I chose this because it shows how hard it is for parents to earn child support, and what the benefits of child support can do towards the family and children.

I chose this article because I think it’s a real eye opener to child poverty in New Zealand especially in comparison to Sweden. This article can teach the New Zealand government what they need to do and what they need to change in order to make child poverty decrease or go away altogether. Also this comparison between the two countries gives the people of New Zealand ideas on what they can do in their own lives to help make child poverty go away.

I found this TED talk insightful as I did not realise it isn’t always a lack of funds stopping some families getting things like medical care, but the judgement they receive from others when asking for it. Our society is extremely judgmental and that makes it so much harder for those people who are living in poverty.
