Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Stranger Things (TV 2016) Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Relationships: Robin Buckley/Nancy Wheeler, Barbara "Barb" Holland & Nancy Wheeler Characters: Robin Buckley, Nancy Wheeler, Barbara "Barb" Holland Additional Tags: Inspired by Frankenstein, Ronancetober, Monstrous, Nancy Wheeler Needs a Hug, Good Friend Robin Buckley, Robin Buckley Loves Nancy Wheeler, this was more angsty than I had intended, Violence, Guns, Nancy Wheeler with guns, Guilt, Trauma Series: Part 2 of Ronancetober 2023 Summary:
“Hi, so, what’s wrong?” Robin fell into the passenger seat. Her eyes were focused on Nancy’s sharp jawline and her worried expression.
“It’s hard to explain.” Nancy started the car, slowly driving away from Robin’s home. “I think it’s better I show you.”
“Oh, alright.”
Robin wasn’t sure what to expect. She wasn’t sure if she should be frightened or not. Perhaps she ought to be after everything from spring break. But Robin barely had the energy to remember such traumas, let alone to fear them. And she was with Nancy, so how bad could it possibly be?
But Nancy didn’t drive to the Wheeler house, she drove past her street and kept driving until they reached the gates that stood around the old Hawkins Lab. Robin only knew what happened here from incomplete stories that she was told. She didn’t even want to imagine what could hide behind those walls.
OR
Nancy Wheeler's guilt forces her to create something horrible. Robin is there to hold her hand.

follow the tide (with the monsters on your shoulder)
Nancy wipes her forehead of sweat and blood that proves she’s still human. Her lips are bitten red and chapped. Her expression is cold. This is the face of someone who has won a thousand battles, Robin thinks. Someone who has conquered kingdoms and more. Someone who will take this one by force and smile while doing it. Nancy stares at Robin, eyes smooth as stone. “That’s the best you can do?”
Robin and Nancy meet again, except they aren't the same. Not really.

Chapter Two- Origins
“You know, you’re getting pretty damn good at saving my life. Careful, Wheeler, I might start thinking that I’m your favourite person.” Robin rocked her shoulder against Nancy’s.
You are. The thought was there in Nancy’s head without hesitation and she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and offered a small smile.
or
Nancy has a conversation with her mother and learns that her new abilities might not be so new after all, and with the help of a vision, faces off against Hawkin's newest monster. All while dealing with a growing amount of gay panic, of course.

I forgot to post for the first day 😭😭. So I'm going to post Day 1 & Day 2 today, and afterwards I'll be following the regular schedule. I sincerely apologize for my mistake and I hope y'all are ok with it. Anyways, here's my submission for Day 1 of Ronancetober. Day 2 will be up later today because again, it slipped my mind that it was already October :)
Day 1: Upside Down
"Mike better wish I don't get my hands on him when I get free," Nancy seethed, normally bright blue eyes darkened with the intent to murder.
“That makes two of us,” Robin grumbled as she wriggled around, trying her best to free herself and Nancy, but to no avail.
She and Nancy had been paired up to do the nightly perimeter check alongside one of the cracks that had formed after Vecna had almost killed Max, as they did every night. Joyce and Hopper had paired up as well as Steve and Murray, the last pairing being Yuri and Enzo. The adults did it every night, but her, Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve switched off in different pairings every night, so one of them could stay behind and be there with Argyle to watch over Dustin, Will, Mike, Lucas, Max, Erica, and El.
Naturally, the other teens grumbled about being excluded. All of the adults, however, were very strict about them keeping an eye on Max and their families. If something happened to them while they were on patrol, the younger teens had to be ready to protect the town. After lots of arguments and debates, they agreed so long as they got to have a walkie and listen in on their patrol check-ins.
Hopper had decided, alongside Joyce, that tonight would be Robin and Nancy who would assist them in checking the glowing red ravines running through Hawkins. The two readily agreed, more than eager to do something productive to help. Nancy loaded up her guns while Robin made some Molotov cocktails and cleaned the nail bat Steve had made for her. They finished packing their bags, and with a small high-five, they were off. They set off on the crack that traveled north from the Byers home, only after promising to check in every twenty minutes with the adults.
“We should check the traps while we’re out here,” Nancy said, looking over her shoulder and stifling a laugh as Robin nearly tripped over a tree root that was sticking out of the ground.
“I'm fine. Totally fine. Definitely not freaked out about possibly being eaten alive by one of these creatures or anything. And I'm definitely not freaked out about the fact that we could contract any number of diseases from said creatures, including rabies. I've told you that rabies is like, my number one fear, right? Because if I haven't, then let me tell you—”
Nancy reached over and put her hand over Robin’s mouth, ignoring her surprised expression and tilting her head towards the bushes in front of them. Something was moving around in there and causing a ruckus. When she was satisfied Robin wouldn’t speak, she removed her hand from over the taller girl’s mouth. In sync, the two women reached for their weapons, Nancy cocking her gun as Robin tightened her grip on her nail bat. Slowly, the two of them approached, Nancy only a few steps ahead of Robin. With an exchanged glance, the two of them rushed forward, only to yelp and scream in surprise as they were abruptly lifted into the air.
“What the fuck?!” Nancy exclaimed while Robin groaned in pain as she had hit her head on one of the branches.
The two of them were suspended in the air with a rope tied around their ankles. The rope was attached to the trunk of the tree. Oh, and they were also hanging upside down.
“Unbelievable!” Nancy growled, eyes following the source of the rustling, which also happened to be what caused them to get into this mess.
“It's so cute! Look at its little face and its little ears and its little nose!” Robin gushed, a toothy grin on her face as she also stared at the creature that had gotten them into this mess.
Nancy sighed in a mix of amusement and frustration as the little rabbit stared at them. It's nose twitched a few times before it hopped away.
“Umm, Nancy?”
“Yes Robin?”
“What are we supposed to do? Because our next check-in is in seven minutes, and if we don't respond everyone is going to think something terrible happened to us. Then they're going to come running and abandon their own posts where an actual monster could emerge and get free and cause massive damage in Hawkins all because we were stupid enough to get stuck in one of our own traps. I don't even remember this trap being marked on the maps. Unless I was looking at the wrong maps, then—”
“It was Mike,” Nancy interrupted, shaking her head in anger. “He was talking about setting some surprise traps with the other kids since they suspected Vecna might possibly use Will as a spy like he did before.”
“So what, they snuck out after we all explicitly forbade them from coming here to set traps Will doesn't know about so some of them would surprise Vecna if he decided to stage an attack?”
“Essentially, yes.”
“Those kids are either extremely stupid or extremely brave. What if something had happened to them? They'd just get into even more trouble and cause us to keep an even closer eye on them.”
“You're telling me,” Nancy muttered. “We’ll scold them later. Right now, we need to focus on getting out of here before we cause a panic.”
“Right, yeah. You wouldn't happen to have a knife on you or anything, would you?” Robin inquired, beginning to feel a bit dizzy with all the blood rushing to her head.
“I do, but unfortunately, it’s in my pack.”
“...which is on the ground.”
“That little shithead better wish I don't get my hands on him when I get free.”
“That makes two of us.”
The girls froze as their walkie crackled with static before Jonathan’s voice came through. “Mom, Hopper, do you copy?”
“Shit!” they exclaimed in unison, moving and thrashing every which way to try and free themselves so they could get to the walkie on time.
“We copy. No signs of anything over here,” Hopper responded. Joyce’s voice soon came through as well, asking if they had had enough to eat and if everything was alright. Typical worried, slightly overprotective mom stuff. Nobody could blame her though, not after everything that’s happened, and especially not with Vecna seeming to have a certain fascination on El and Will.
“Enzo, Yuri, do you copy?”
“We copy. No suspicious activity over here,” Enzo replied.
“Harrington, Murray, do you copy?”
“Copy. We’ve got nothing,” Steve confirmed.
“Nancy, Robin, do you copy?”
“Oh come on!” Robin shouted, running her hands over her face. “We’re so going to be dead if we ever get out of here!”
“Keep trying!” Nancy barked out, resolving to apologize to Robin later once they were at the Byers home.
While the two of them kept trying to get out of the ropes, Steve was shouting into the walkie.
“Rob, don’t do this to me! Do you copy?! I repeat, do you copy?!”
“Harrington, you need to calm your ass down! They have five minutes before we go searching for them. That’s the protocol.”
“I have an idea!” Robin proclaimed, reaching up to cut at the ropes with the laces of her shoes. It was something she had picked up on from her parents. They had gone camping a lot when she was younger to connect with nature and shit, and they had taught her to be prepared for anything.
“Hurry!”
“Screw your protocol!” Steve argued through the walkie. “That’s my best friend you’re talking about, and I won’t leave her alone to die!”
“This is a lot harder than it looks,” Robin huffed, face red with beads of sweat dripping down her temples. All of a sudden, she was quite grateful for the toned physique soccer had given her. She decided she would thank her old coach once they got out of this mess.
“Robin, we don’t have much time left!” Nancy said, noticing that Hopper and Steve had already been arguing for three minutes on the watch Robin was sporting on her left wrist.
“Got it!”
Not even a second had passed before Robin’s triumphant exclamation before they went hurtling towards the ground as quickly as they had ascended. The breath was knocked out of the both of them as they landed in a heap on the forest floor. Nancy was the first to recover and hastily scrambled to her feet, reaching the walkie that was a few feet away.
“This is Nancy! Robin and I copy! I repeat, Robin and I copy!”
She and Robin exchanged exasperated glances as everyone began talking a mile a minute. “We’re fine, I promise. A little banged up, but we’re alright.”
“What happened?” Steve inquired, needing to know if his best friend and friend were in danger.
“We’ll explain later,” Robin stated, shooting a wink towards Nancy, knowing they would come up with a cover story by the time they had gotten back. “But we’re safe, and there’s no monsters here. That’s all that matters.”
“Finish your sweeps and meet back at the Byers,” Hopper instructed.
Everyone signed off the walkies, relieved to know that no harm had come to Nancy and Robin.
“Let’s get going,” Nancy said once they had gathered all of their supplies.
“And let’s try to avoid the traps,” Robin said, shuddering at the thought of being stuck with no escape.
Nancy hummed in agreement, standing on her tiptoes to plant a chaste kiss on her girlfriend’s lips. “Remind me to thank you properly later.”
Robin gulped, nodding frantically with her eyes wide. “Umm, yeah. I-I mean, absolutely.”
Nancy giggled and began walking back towards the Byers home, but not before linking her hand with Robin’s, warmth sparking from their hands all the way to their hearts.
“Have I mentioned how much I love you, Nancy Wheeler?”
“Not as much as I love you, Robin Buckley.”
And if a few weeks after the incident, the younger teens kept finding all different assortments of bugs in their rooms, well, that was a secret between Robin and Nancy, and a secret it would stay.

“Your mom’s gonna kill me,” Robin says anxiously, running a hand through her hair. Max makes a noncommittal noise and shrugs. “Not like she hasn’t tried to before.” “Max.” “I’m just saying,” she mumbles, breath coming out in little puffs of fog. “She wouldn’t be that mad.” Robin watches as she tries to fight a shiver, tries to be tough. Robin’s just grateful she remembered to actually layer up for once, t-shirt under sweater and jacket on top. Robin shrugs off her coat and drapes it over Max. It swallows her, but she tugs it closer. “Thanks,” Max mutters. Somewhere from behind them, Robin can hear the clocktower chime. She checks her watch. 10:30. Robin sighs. Drags her hands down her face. Shit. “Yeah okay, grab your board. We’re going.” Max grabs the board, hands it to Robin as she pulls the coat tighter around herself, and they make the fifteen minute walk back to 108 Maple. It’s about five minutes into their walk when Max asks. “Don’t you think we should call her?” “Nah,” Robin smiles. “I think we owe her a surprise.”

Ronancetober Day 1 2: Ghost
I've been compelled to come back for a minute to write for ronancetober, so here's day 1/2 because I wanted to write for the ghost prompt.
Enjoy! And warning, this is kinda long and pretty angsty. Also it's set in an AU so no upside down (mentioning this in case some stuff don't make sense).
-----
The equipment was for show. Although it was an expensive sacrifice, Robin would not be able to make a living in Hawkins, Indiana, simply by claiming to be able to see ghosts. If anything, it would get her locked up at Pennhurst before she'd even get a paycheck. So, when she got the call from the library, she showed up with the EMF meter, digital thermometers, night vision goggles, and audio recorders instead of just her more comfortable patch-plastered denim jacket and jeans.
The numbers alone were enough to get her down there by sunset, but the witness reports had her shoveling her dinner into her mouth like a dog who sniffed a buried bone.
Robin mostly got calls for homes and abandoned buildings, but she hadn't gotten the library before—she was excited when they told her it was down in the archives. She had been there before in high school doing research for projects and always got chills, but she'd never seen anything. That made her curious, but it wouldn't be the first time that a ghost had hid themselves from her.
Walking into the archives, shutting and locking the door behind her with the key lent to her by the librarian, Robin was pulled four years into the past. When she put her hand on the railing that led down into the dust-filled room, it was ice cold. It was part of the report: after five p.m. and well past midnight, the room appeared to be insulated with blocks of ice. Robin turned off all her equipment and dove into the dark room.
At first she couldn't see anything, much less the wispy presence of a lonely ghost. She stuck one hand in her pocket and scrolled her fingers down the unchanged cupboards cramped with decades-old prints from local newspapers to the Weekly Watcher, which was notorious for endorsing crazy conspiracies. She would have smiled at the memory of discovering an article about Elvis being cloned by aliens if her nerves hadn't been jolted into action when she touched the cupboard marked "W.". It was cold—much colder than the rest of the otherwise identical sprawl of drawers.
Robin opened it and knew she wouldn't find the Weekly Watcher tucked between the other cassettes. She pushed it closed, stuck her other hand into her other pocket to warm it up, and walked to the microfilm readers.
The small room, filled with desks with banker lamps and book-swollen shelves that evidently hadn't been dusted in the past two decades, housed two readers. The sole distinction between the two readers in the center was the presence of a COMCAT black-and-white acrostic poster on the left reader's side, along with the presence of a ghost hunched over the screen.
Robin froze beside the entrance. Anyone else would have screamed bloody murder, but Robin felt relief. A girl sat on the stool, her finger depressing the scroll button while her other hand gripped the side of the reader, seemingly ready to explode it with her mind. Besides her relief, Robin was surprised at the sheer brightness of the girl ghost's body—she was practically corporeal.
It took Robin a second to recognize her as Nancy Wheeler, Hawkins High's ex-princess. The realization nearly knocked her off her feet, but her heart beat her to it and plunged straight through the floor like an anvil.
Nancy hadn't seen her yet, and Robin was really hoping she wouldn't. Robin hoped her legs would unfreeze before Nancy turned her head and saw her too. It was a sudden and horrible drowning of panic, gut-wrenching sorrow, and shattered memories that mended back together in striking speed.
Nancy Wheeler had died a year ago, a year before she graduated from Emerson, a year after the last time they had seen each other. Robin had gotten a call from Jonathan Byers on some lazy June afternoon when she'd been relaxing with the windows open, a cool breeze freshening her hot room. After the call, she didn't leave or eat or shower well beyond December. She never opened her windows again, but her room never stopped being cold.
Robin was about to turn around; she really was. She had willed something out of herself, something strong enough to lift her left foot from the ground. But then Nancy closed her eyes, took her finger off the button, slumped into her hands, and suddenly Robin couldn't help herself and fell to her knees.
Nancy did look at her then. Funny enough, she was the one frightened in the end. Her face jumped out of her hands, her whole body got shocked into a curl. She looked at Robin up and down, knees to eyes, and got dim enough that Robin could read the titles of the books on the shelf behind her. Robin hung her head.
"Robin?"
Robin fell onto her hands, a numb feeling rising all the way from her toes to her cheeks. Nancy's voice was still the same, albeit distant, as though hearing it coming from deep inside a cave just like every other ghost, but it wrecked Robin in every way it could. She shook her head, but she didn't know why. She couldn't look up at Nancy; she didn't want to, either. She didn't want to be there.
But then she saw Nancy's heels in the edges of her vision, and all it took was for her to blink for the tears to spot the floor.
"No," Robin whispered desperately. She shook her head again, the flood of two summers ago like electric eels unleashing into her nervous system. A spark of Nancy in her denim jacket; a spark of her in Robin's arms; a spark of what their first and last kiss felt like; a spark of Nancy in the rain carrying a bouquet turned to mulch.
It was enough for her to turn, cover her eyes, and run in the other direction. She didn't turn around even when she heard her name, loud and resonant enough to shake the ground. But when she reached the stairs, she couldn't get past the first step.
"Robin!" she heard again, and it was the worst feeling in the whole world to hear her name come from Nancy's lips after all this time. It didn't feel real, and it didn't make sense, like her mind was playing a horrible trick on her. The whole of her back turned ice cold, and she knew that meant that Nancy was right behind her.
Robin took in the coldest breath her lungs ever held and turned around.
Seeing Nancy head on took a blow to her chest harder than she had expected. The breath flew right out of her, but not a hair on Nancy's head moved out of place. Nancy's ghost was there in all her glory, hands curled into a steel fist, the dent between her furrowed eyebrows the same as it was always. She looked as beautiful as she did the last time Robin had seen her, and that twisted the knife in her heart until it erupted against her ribs.
Nancy spoke first. "Hi" was all she said for a while, probably because she expected Robin to say something in return. But Robin had become a coward who lost her heart and couldn't come up with anything worth what she was feeling.
Eventually, cutting through the thick cold tension, Nancy's features smoothed out as she said, "I've missed you."
Robin wished to be smite right then and there. She prayed for it, but the prayer turned into, "I've missed you too," half-way through. The watery smile it pulled out of Nancy was greater than anything a god could have ever given her.
Nancy tentatively raised her hand and drew it down Robin's jaw, feeling a biting chill that made her grind her teeth. She then pressed her palm over Robin's heart. It was the second greatest sorrow in all of Robin's life that she couldn't feel any of it but the cold pressure on her skin, but she figured she was the luckiest person ever to have had the luck to be graced by Nancy Wheeler after having been taken like a breath. I've you missed too was not enough to describe Robin's ache; she had missed Nancy like one might miss a misplaced lung.
She didn't leave the archives until sunrise, when the librarian lady had to have the door busted open. They found her curled up against the right microfilm reader, dried tears down her cheeks, and the ghost of a smile under her sleep-worn eyes.
#ronance#just thought I'd drop this here after being ia for god knows how long#a bit of a rushed ending but i hope it all made sense#i've been having a ronance resurgence for months now#enough that i've been working on an atrocious fic since july that hopefully I'll have at least mostly finished#by the end of the year if time gives#ronancetober#in the meantime have this#nancy wheeler#robin buckley#stranger things#it hurt like a bitch to write this by the way#idk why i wrote it but it's here#i don't even want to think about it once it's posted bye#i love nancy wheeler more than i love myself#long live nancy wheeler#heron's writing

Hiiii, just wondering if you have anything else written for the four chimes AU?
I think you mentioned in one of your author’s notes that there were certain prompts back in October that you thought worked well for it :)
well...
if you count the whirlwind of messages in the chaos thread i have with @/lumaxramblings, then yes, there's a lot of snippets and prompts and ideas written for the au
i actually also have some more of the prompts written (both complete and still wip) for ronancetober 2023, its just that i never got around to posting them as i got stuck with day 6 (which has a premise ready, but its not written yet—i think i ran out of steam at the time)
i also started posting the actual fic of the og au itself, with the first chapter up in my ao3, but i...well, i havent continued it AHSFUIASHf
but yeah, @/lumaxramblings and i have a lot written for it at this point, 2 years of constant ramblings about it (along with about 20+ sub AUs, which include ciquest ofc)
we kinda paused rn as im in an encanto hyperfix while finnthony has his own hyperfixations as well, but we also know we can easily hop back any time to this au
its our blood sweat and tears <3
so ye :>
tysm for the ask!! <333
and bonus, here's some more ciquest ronance core pics:

🦇Ronancetober Day 2: Vampire/Werewolf🐺
I know what you are
Parties are the perfect places for her to put an end to her thirst; the itchy, nagging hunger that gnawed at her insides and made her feel as if she would faint unless she gave in to it.
For as long as she could she resisted it; she hadn’t chosen this life, she didn’t want to be preying on people every time she got a bit peckish.
So she went as long as she could without a bite. She tried to tide herself over sometimes with raw red meats, though they did next to nothing to combat the decay she felt after she resisted too long, feeling fragile and hollow and like what she really was.
A walking corpse.
So, she found herself at another party. It was easy to take advantage of the drunkenness and confusion and quickly ease the clawing thirst that made her throat dry and tight.
She wandered into the bathroom of the house, away from the bodies that were bouncing to the music, leaning her head against the door and shutting her eyes, taking a minute to compose herself. She really, really hates doing this.
“Hey, d’you maybe think that this bathroom might be occupied?”
The voice makes Nancy jump, spinning around immediately to see a girl sat on the counter. She’s taller than Nancy, with short hair and bangs and freckles. Her fingers are adorned with rings and chains, and she wears a jacket covered in patches and a small part of Nancy wants to stay here with the girl and read all of them.
“Sorry, I’ll uh-“ Nancy starts, but she can see this girl’s neck and she’s so sick of being thirsty and they’re alone in here-
“No, you’re pretty,” the girl says, hopping down from the counter and taking a few more steps towards her, smirking, “you can stay,”
The air seems to leave the room as the girl is barely inches away from her now, needing to look down a little to meet Nancy’s eyes.
“You’ think I’m… pretty?,” Nancy lets her fingers wander up and down the girls arm, not needing to worry about staring at her neck now that she can’t draw her gaze away from the tall girl’s ocean blue eyes.
“Yeah, babe,” Nancy’s heart gives a flutter at the nickname, and the girl brings a hand up to her cheek, “What d’you think of me?”
“I don’t know yet,” Nancy drapes her arms around the girls neck as the taller of the two begins to lean in, and then she’s being pushed against the bathroom door as the girl kisses her, and she reciprocates. After all, it’s not often you find another gay girl in Hawkins, vampire of not.
Soon, the taller girl was trailing kisses along Nancy’s jaw, and then her neck, and Nancy’s thirst had all but become a dull background presence, blending in with the muffled beat of the music as she let this stranger kiss her.
“Still deciding what you think about me?” The girl pulls away from kissing her neck and holds her by gently by the chin.
Nancy smiles, and is about to speak when the girl’s eyes widen and she takes a sudden step back, the sudden space between them feeling like a void.
“Holy shit, you’re-“ She looks less startled than confused- or maybe betrayed?
“Wait, what? What do you-“ Then Nancy realises. She’s smiled straight at the girl, they had been so close, she must have seen her- but still, how could she-?
“Oh fuck no, I am not getting bit by a vampire girl tonight, I’m going-“ the girl starts for the door, but Nancy blocks her and locks it, keeping her hand tight on the handle.
“How did you know?”
The mood has drastically shifted from when they were making out a few seconds ago, the two of them glaring at eachother.
“Those pretty fangs of yours gave it away, sweetheart,” the girl grimaces, “not to mention you’re white as a sheet,”
“I know, but most people don’t connect those dots,” Nancy pushes further, “you’re not quite what you seen either, are you?”
The honey haired girl laughs a little, not breaking her stare from Nancy, “Guess that makes two of us, darling,” The girl closes the gap between them again, putting gentle hands on Nancy’s waist.
“Well, you’re not a vampire- what’re you, some sort of werewolf or ghoul or something?” Nancy interrogates, and something shifts in the girl’s face.
She exhales sharply through her nose, “Well, I’m Robin, for starters, and I think you’ll have to get to know me better before you find out what I am,”
“Hm, I guess I’ll take that as a challenge,”
“You’re on, gorgeous,”

Ronancetober Day #2: Vampire/Werewolf
[A/N: I really wanted to go for a pulp horror fiction vibe here. Real Christopher Pike energy... Also, I'm late again and will continue to be so]
Read on Ao3
Summary: Robin gets trapped in the halls of Hawkins High, persued by a group of bloodthirsty vampires.
She didn't know how she ended up here with her back pushed against the short end of a set of puke-green lockers with a wooden stake clenched in her grasp. Robin couldn’t catch her breath, but it didn’t seem to matter as she swallowed down her fear, and tried to regulate the sound of her own blood pulsating past her ears.
Any creature could track her in this state, sweat dripping in the hot air of Hawkins High School. The beginning of silver moonlight flecked through the slatted windows of metal doors. Robin’s eyes had adjusted to the dark- had been well adjusted before this ordeal had started before vampires were released into Roane County.
It sounded crazy to Robin too, even running through her thoughts in the trenches of the battle didn’t make sense. Vampires, blood-sucking demons that were out for blood. Specifically, her blood. She was sure it smelled different, though it dripped red just like the rest of the people around her.
Vampires were inherently stupid. That was something Robin had learned quickly and not from her own family's doomed lineage. They were limited to stalking their prey in the dark of night, just as Robin was limited to her own benefits by the lack of a full moon.
It was a terrible time for Robin to become hyperaware of the history homework she left in her locker. It was subsequently a horrible time for her to notice a light spilling from under the Hawkins Streak.
Robin had walked into a full-force vampire congregation gathered around a rolling projector, drawing a complex plan that looked like a football play. They had all turned, all hissed at her baring their fangs.
She’d excused herself before running as fast as she could, stupidly not towards the doors leading to the parking lot. Robin wasn’t going to give them open space, even if she did have more of a technical advantage in the forest surrounding the school’s property.
The girl ended up in the art room, the only place plastered with windows floor to ceiling, plastered with craft paper to create a sunroom effect during the day. Right now, it bathed the room in red. She had shut herself into an art supply cabinet, crouched and uncomfortable.
“Robin,” Tammy Thompson’s voice sing-songed through the room like the low whistle of the wind. “I know you’re in here.”
She would not break. No matter how hot her former Muppet of a crush looked with fangs in her mouth. Robin’s fingers started to inch against the craft paper, the modeling clay, and the safety scissors. She eventually gripped the closest thing to a weapon- a wooden ruler.
“It reeks of dog in here. I promise I’ll go easy on you.”
Like shit, she would. Robin waited until the girls’ sneakers stopped in front of the cabin. She imagined a perfectly manicured hand towards the cabinet. Robin mustered the most animalistic sound she knew she was capable of.
Tammy Thompson was cold, icy, and dead as she sprung forward and shoved the side corner of the ruler with her wolfish strength into Tammy’s chest. It was easier than she expected, terrifying in all aspects.
Tammy stumbled back a few steps, the small of her back hitting the nearest desk “You bitch.”
She crumbled to ash that sparked a brilliant orange and fizzed like a firecracker before dying to a black in a pile at her feet. Gross. Robin reached down and picked up the only thing that survived of the attack, the ruler that was easy enough to break into a point down the center.
Robin exited into the cold and empty hallway before she heard another noise. It was how she ended up here, with a broken ruler against her palm as the noise of scattering vampires filled her ears.
They had found Tammy, she heard them. Their shock and their anger and their subsequent hunt. She could smell them, their death and their anguish. Robin was still reeling from her freshman crush exploding into dust particles when a cold hand pulled her into the nearest classroom.
Robin swallowed a scream in that moment. She used her strength in the dark science room to mount her attacker, even with her eyes clenched shut in fear. She straddled the figure beneath her, letting out a growl as she raised the pointed ruler about her head.
“Robin,”
She halted at the voice, whispered, and hushed as it vibrated under her. It was so familiar and sounded just about as scared as Robin felt. The tip of her makeshift weapon had just about pierced skin, she nearly shoved it through a still heart.
“Nancy?”
Robin tightened her grip on the broken ruler. It cut into the side of her palm, leaving a cotton candy pink mark. Her mouth was suddenly dry, and all the fight threatened to leave her. Nancy was cold and pale and had a red tint to her usual sharp blue stare. She was here, and she hadn’t had her throat ripped out by the blood-sucking vampires yet.
It made sense, really. She hadn’t seen Nancy in over a week due to purposed stomach flu that she didn't want to get Robin sick with. She complied and dropped off soup and a few books that she thought Nancy would enjoy. All of it had been in vain (no pun intended).
She pushed herself off the vampire and used the heels of her Doc Martins to press her back flush against the brick wall, under the written-on chalkboard. Nancy propped herself up on her elbows, a broken look on her face.
“It’s not what it looks like, Robin” Nancy’s voice came out as a cracked whisper.
“You’re… one of them.”
She sat up entirely now, holding her hands with her palms towards Robin as if to push the air towards the floor, to calm the situation. “I wanted to tell you, but I had my reasons. Had my orders, really.”
“And when does Nancy Wheeler follow orders?”
“When her life is on the line, Robin. I was backed into a corner, literally.” She swallowed hard and inched closer “Don’t act innocent in all this, you’re hiding something too. I can smell it on you.”
Pain rushed through her. She had lied to Nancy. It wasn’t intentional, it was a mix of embarrassment and fear. It was unfathomable, really- an ancient bloodline that was awakened within her psyche when she reached the tender age of 18. A beast hidden within a woman, now working hand in hand with her. Werewolves were unhinged enough, but add vampires into the mix, and the whole world crumbles.
Nancy was close now. She smelled metallic. She smelled the like the earth. It was masked by the same floral scent that Robin was used to, still there. Still Nancy. She wanted to collapse into her arms, into the cold feeling of her embrace. Instead, she pressed herself harder against the wall, drawing in a shaky breath. It was all too much.
“Robbie,” She tried again, “Listen to me. If I can smell you, so can they. There isn’t much time. We can deal with the whole undead thing later. Right now, I need you to leave, because they will not show mercy.”
“How?”
Nancy’s ember eyes darted towards the wooden door that led to the hallway, then to the windows that seeped a silver light in a slatted pattern. She gestured and Robin followed blindly. She would follow Nancy Wheeler anywhere, she realized.
She stood and gripped the base of the window and tugged with minimal effort. The cold night air filled the room and hit Robin’s bones. She shivered, gritting her teeth as Nancy brushed her fingertips against Robin’s bare skin. There was no difference between the temperature outside and her subtle touch.
“I won’t hurt you,” Nancy confirmed before she ripped a solid strip of fabric from the sleeve of Robin’s shirt. “We must make it believable. Now, go. They’re coming.”
She could hear the fear in Nancy’s words as she propped her foot up on the windowsill and dropped onto the cold grass just in time for the door to the classroom to burst open. The metal hinges rattled. Robin held her breath, held the makeshift stake closer, and clenched her eyes shut.
“Where is she?” Jason Carver’s voice hissed.
“Gone, escape through the window and took off.”
“You’re sure?”
“Pretty damn sure. Put up a hell of a fight but she’s not human, Jason.” Nancy defended, “I’ve already lost my life once this week, I don’t want to make it permanent.”
There was a silence in the room. His sneakers walking across the floor. Robin’s lungs began to burn in protest. The air was too cold for her to feel her toes, her fingers. She didn't stand a chance against the slow beating hearts she heard above her shoulder.
“Right,” He laughed humorlessly. “She’ll be back. She can’t avoid us forever, can she?”
Nancy waited; voice low. “No, not forever.”
