Religion: Raised under a Presbyterian mother and an apathetic father. Currently swings between atheism and agnosticism: he’d like to believe there’s some higher power but fails to see much evidence for the presence of one - at least in the form most modern religions teach. There’s no proof in Simon’s eyes of a God that’s both powerful and benevolent. 

Political Affiliation: Independent. Mixed liberal and conservative attitudes. 

Occupation: Former assistant district attorney in Suffolk County, MA, current owner of Pulp Kitchen and Pulp Vintage, his side business in the rare book & documents. PV specializes in early editions, maps, signatures from significant persons predating the 21st century, and the ever-popular vintage movie posters, as well as a few specialized items (architectural blueprints, maps, letters) from Dertosa’s history. Only a handful of these precious items he actually displays: in the very back of the store, close to his office and locked behind a delicate metal gate. Walk-in purchases are not welcome, though interested customers may contact Simon through PV’s website or by phone to make an appointment to examine the collection in person.   

Living Arrangements: The second floor of Pulp Kitchen is dedicated to Simon’s living space, accessed through the stairwell connected to his backroom office, which also empties out into the alley behind PK. He likes the simplicity of an all-in-one building (as well as the feeling of security afforded by elevation and insulation from other people and structures). He’s managed a mish-mash aesthetic of spare industrialism and coziness: exposed brick walls and steel beams, a dark floor but the living room popping with a deep goldrod-yellow carpet and anchored on a large, buttery, reddish leather sofa. There’s a knit throw blanket tossed over the back of just about every seating surface that isn’t the chairs at the kitchen island. All doors are sliding and usually left open for the feeling of greater space. The apartment is blessed with the same wall-to-wall windows of the cafe downstairs and Simon enjoys having his morning coffee with a chair pulled up to them to soak in a little sun and watch the street wake up below. There’s a surprising lack of bookshelves considering the man himself, but less surprising considering the abundance of them downstairs.

Clothing Style: Man’s got a big spectrum. Take your normal urban book-keep stereotype and add a few more colors and much nicer shoes. Almost always in a collared shirt of some kind, sleeves rolled up above the elbows and leather bracelets on his wrist, or maybe under a well-cut blazer with a discreet watch. You’ll never see Simon in a simple t-shirt if he’s got any choice about it, but at work he’ll range anywhere from this level of fancy jacket to this level of relaxed everything. If he’s going to go casual, it’s definitely in a hoodie with a some kind of weird reference plastered on the front. 

Usual Expression: Neutral and a bit removed, he tends to look ten levels deep in daydreaming even when he’s just sorting shelves or making a cappuccino. There’s pretty clear tells as to whether was he’s thinking is upsetting or pleasant: pinched brows or the smallest upward quirk to his lips.

Distinguishing Characteristics: A rigid scar above his left hip from the struggle three years ago that nearly cost him his life. Simon thanks the bullet scraping his side for giving him the panic-adrenaline to even survive it. A single dimple in his left cheek. Oh -- and we can’t forget the goddamn glasses. He felt like a jackass at first with fake lenses in, but over time he’s learned that they generously contribute to his fulfilling a certain stereotype within this new identity, and he’s now happy to hide behind the thin extra layer of protection granted by longer hair and a useless pair of wire frames. 

HEALTH.

Physical Ailments: None.

Neurological Conditions: His move to Dertosa came with a government-recommended psychologist, though Simon only met with her for a month before dropping out of his appointments with the stubborn belief it was better to take care of himself. There’s a bit of a self-stigma in Simon’s mind regarding mental health: depression and paranoia are emotions from his point of view, not conditions, and he expects himself to manage them like an adult, regardless of whether or not that’s a realistic goal. 

Allergies: Lower level lactose intolerant, but the kind who just pops a lactose pill, says ‘fuck it’, and has his latte anyways.

Sleeping Habits: A pretty solid seven to eight hours a night, in bed before midnight and out before eight 90% of the time. Structure is something Simon actively works for, in the hopes it’ll encourage stability. 

Eating Habits: Somewhat of an accidental vegetarian, his typical diet skirts close, but he lacks the moral rigidity on that particular stance. He’s weak once a really good smell hits his nose, meat be damned. Tries to keep his eating habits as regular as sleep, breakfast is a cup of coffee and any fruit he can grab and take downstairs, lunch is grazed from whatever’s on the menu at PK, dinner thrown together before after seven and before nine, always with some sort of fresh green veg involved. It’s tempting sometimes to revert to old college ramen-and-microwaveables habits, but he’s grudgingly taking care of his body with the full knowledge that the work of cooking is worth pushing him for.

Exercise Habits: Swims laps for an hour and half at the YMCA three times a week and tends to bike or walk for groceries, errands, ect. 

Emotional Stability: Mmmmm, let’s say 6, 7? There’s plenty of emotions tugging at Simon’s sleeve, but he’s simmered down to a more stable center as time has passed and he’s proven to be good for better or for worse at systematically approaching, sorting, and stuffing down what he thinks is useful to acknowledge or not. He purposefully tries to keep away from situations of high emotion, he knows himself well enough to know once he is propelled to extremes, it’s hard to get himself down from them.

Sociability: Simon definitely needs his alone time to refuel and recenter, but he also needs the stimulation of other people or he’d go stircrazy. He keeps an arm’s length, but he’s also too curious about what’s rattling around in other people’s heads to be a true isolationist and can be very warm with the right crowd. It’s a pleasure to have social connections, as long as he can keep the frame of mind that they can only go so far as PK’s front door. 

Body Temperature: Cool-natured, there’s a reason he can get away with wearing suit jackets in summer.

Addictions: Lil bit of a hoarder of sentimental objects. Does not matter is the memory is positive or negative and he doesn’t need to be able to lay eyes on it, just to know it’s within his care.

Drug Use: None.

Alcohol Use: Strictly self-enforced as social. He doesn’t bring booze into his house unless it’s for cooking or a guest. No point in tempting a bad habit.

Fears: Having to start over again, any form of his past biting him in the ass, having an opportunity to do something just but being rendered unable to because of his situation, forgetting the past.

Hobbies: Cultivating Pulp Vintage’s collection is as much hobby as work, swimming, snapping up new posters for the wall of the cafe, listening to podcasts, reading, handheld puzzles, volunteer work. He hasn’t been back to his self-defense course since his first year in Dertosa but his teacher is slowly attempting to wheedle him back into other classes at the gym. Monthly trips back to Dertosa’s legal indoor gun range to keep himself sharp.

Habits: Cleaning those useless glasses as a way to stall a conversation or action, drumming his fingers, the two-handed mug hold, reading behind the cash register, skimming the paper every day from front to back and impulsively checking the news bar on his phone, covering his mouth with his hand while laughing, doing the lazy half-tuck with a shirt, tapping his foot when he’s jazzed up. 

FAVOURITES.

Weather: Daytime summer rain, that perfect crisp winter day when the air is frosty in his lungs and the ground is coated in snow. Real winter is one of the big things he misses about the Northeast.

Music: He started playing classic jazz/oldies in PK for the sake of that bookshop aesthetic, but he’s gotten genuinely into a lot of it. Nina Simone, Cab Calloway. Longtime listener to The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vivaldi, Andrés Segovia.

Movies: Clever comedies or character studies, psychological thrillers, old Hollywood experimental movies, all the campiest of 80s horror. ‘Nightcrawler’, ‘the Exorcist’, ‘Metropolis’, ‘In the Mood for Love’. 

Sport: Basketball & fencing. He was a pretty damn good at the latter in high school and he’s entirely self-aware of just how pretentious a thing a boarding school fencing team is to be an alumni of.  

Beverage: Water with a few lime slices, sue him for being boring. Guilty pleasure is those stupidly sweet matcha green tea lattes from Starbucks.

Alternatives To Glastonbury 2020

As someone who resides in London and has friends with enough disposable income to splash out on leisure activities, it was inevitable that there was going to be something I’d miss out on next summer. 

It just so happened to be Glastonbury this time, the festival of all festivals that now seems to be increasingly growing in popularity - it took just 33 minutes for the 2020 tickets to sell out.

But are there any better alternatives? I investigated more to find out what next summer is offering up in the quest to find ‘The best Glastonbury alternative that isn’t Glastonbury but is just as good as Glastonbury.’

Boomtown Fair

Boomtown first came about in 2009, and each year the festival is a different “Chapter" which carries on from the previous year.

The festival site is split into several districts and the storyline narrative is reflected through the districts, streets and venues, which are populated by hundreds of actors who play the role of inhabitants.

Last year’s guests included Lauryn Hill, The Streets, and Groove Armada.

When and where: 12-17 August, Hampshire, UK.

SXSW

SXSW or South by SouthWest is not strictly just a music festival, but more a collection of music, film and interactive media festivals and conferences that showcase talent from across the globe usually across a whopping ten days.

It has been successful in kick-starting the careers of John Mayer, James Blunt and even Hanson back in the 90’s. Mmm yes, that’d definitely make me consider buying a ticket.

When and where: 13-22 March, Texas, USA.

Latitude

More laid back in style and approach, this festival is perfect for anyone who wants a more family-friendly festival.

Last year featured Stereophonics, Lana del Rey and George Ezra.

When and where: 16-19 July, Suffolk, UK.

Tomorrowland

Held in the aptly named Boom in Belgium, Tomorrowland has grown over the years to become one of the most renowned festivals on the global stage.

It’s renowned for its pyrotechnics, has won a string of awards, and tickets usually sell out in just minutes.

Acts from previous years include Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers and David Guetta.

When and where: 17-19 and 24-26 July, Boom, Belgium.

Wireless

Starting out in 2005 when it mostly promoted rock and pop artists, it has grown to be a showcase for established and upcoming hip-hop and urban talent.

Previous acts include Cardi B, Stormzy and Drake.

When and where: 3-5 July, London, UK.

Isle of Wight

Established in 1968, It’s one of the longest running festivals in the UK, and was originally designed as a counter-culture event.

The unexpectedly high attendance levels in 1970 led parliament to legislate for changes in Isle of Wight’s County Council licensing on numbers of attendees allowed at the festival, and the festival closed it’s gates for 32 years.

Since then it’s been restored to its former glory and has had a whole plethora of acts performing including the Rolling Stones, Chic, Fleetwood Mac and many more.

When and where: 11-14 June, Isle of Wight, UK.

Primavera Sound

Since it’s inception just under two decades ago, the festival has become renowned for featuring artists of old and new, and for showcasing artists across a variety of genres.

This year it became the first major music festival to completely ditch paper tickets in favour of mobile-only ticketing.

Previous artists have included Kendrick Lamar, Neil Young, Patti Smith, the Cure plus more.

When and where: 4-6 June, Barcelona, Spain.

Neverworld (formerly Leefest)

Given that I had the chance to perform at this festival when I was a young sprout, and it’s local to me in South-East London, I feel it would be sacrilege to not mention it.

Starting out in his back garden in 2006 when his parents went away for the weekend, Co-founder Lee Denny’s festival has since grown (out of his parents back garden) and has come to feature artists such as Clean Bandit, Bastille, Jake Bugg and one of Glastonbury’s 2019’s highlights for many, Jungle.

When and where: 30 July-1 August, Kent, UK.

El Dorado

The festival branch of party starters Cirque du Soul, El Dorado has only been going a few years but promises to offer a vibrant, colourful atmosphere mixed with some top-notch disc jockeys and funk and soul acts.

Past artists have been Kool and the Gang, Sister Sledge and Todd Terje among others.

When are where: 2-5 July, Herefordshire, UK.

So there you have it, just to name a few festivals I’d keep my eye on and buy tickets for if I could, but NOT in my current financial state.

In the back of a white Jeep Wrangler Cousin Stizz stands, bare chested, wearing a gold chain and Red Sox camo snapback. “Shoutout to the money, love the drugs / Shoutout to the money from the drugs,” he raps. He’s riding around the streets of Boston with his friends, blunts in tow, the wind whipping through their hair, the sun beating down on their backs through the open roof: This was the first look most people got of the 23-year-old Boston rapper, in his video for “Shoutout.”

“We just wanted to do something cool. We just wanted to show y’all what Boston really was,” Stizz says, “I’m just showing y’all what’s going on out here. Like that’s just it. Same thing with bars—everything that’s going on is just what it is.” The track is his ethos in a nutshell: It’s something we can vibe to, move to, and identify with.

Although Stizz is an easygoing person and likes to keep a low profile—he mentions that he, “Barely even goes out. Like I’m just in the crib.”—he’s still profusely determined to make music that both shows thanks to his hometown and breaks out of it. Michael Christmas, a fellow Boston rapper who is also one of Stizz’s closest friends, attributes the same mindset to Stizz, “I remember years ago Stizz told me he wants to stop walking up stairs. He said no more inclines; everything is escalators and elevators… I think Stizz is eventually gonna have a house with just escalators and elevators in it. He said he wants that—if he wants it, he goes and he gets it.”

Stizz’s recent 13-track debut Suffolk County is an accumulation of experiences, from his adolescence to the present, all rooted in the city. Besides “Shoutout,” which got a subtle co-sign by Drake, standout tracks include “No Bells” and “Dum Dope,” two sparse and minimalist songs that are evocative of Suffolk County’s ability to hypnotize its listener. Though he pulls beats from a bevy of producers—Tee-WaTT, M. Ali, Obeatz, DumDrumz, Latrell James, Tedd Boyd, and Lil Rich—the whole tape still has the same spellbinding sound of relaxed trap beats.

Coming up in a rough part of Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, Stizz was forced to mature quickly. “Where I grew up at, like literally right behind my house, I hopped a gate and I’m at the basketball court where everything’s going down. So I’m seeing a lot but all this shit is normal to me because that’s just what I’m growing up on. I’m with the homies, nigga have a shoot out, shoot out right in front of us. We run up the block real quick and then we come back out and go play ball again.”

Stizz’s world changed around age 14. He was doing well academically, but when a close friend—basically his brother—passed away from a gunshot wound, he responded in part by acting out. Things got so out of hand that Stizz’s mother gave him an ultimatum: He either would have to go to military school or go to high school in the suburbs. Stizz picked the suburbs, which was “a real transition at first… I’m from the hood, everybody I know looks like me. And then I go to this school and nobody looks like me.” Though it was a culture shock—he could “relate to nothing”—he soon learned to embrace the change of perspective.

“I learned a lot about myself… Like, it really taught me about how to be a people person and how to treat others, and it just taught me a lot about like people, about what people like and that helped shape the music that I make,” he reflects. “I’ve seen every spectrum almost. I’ve hung out with everybody. I hang with everybody there is to hang with in my city.”

Stizz didn’t have a plan past high school graduation. Music eventually became the answer, but he didn’t feel the push to pursue it until about two years ago. He vividly recalls his friends telling him to take music seriously because of his ability to freestyle, though. Stizz and his homies would freestyle during smoking sessions and diss each other so much that it got to the point where they became good at rapping. One night, Jefe Replay—the only featured artist on Suffolk County—mentioned that there a local cypher series called “12 for 12” going down that he should check out. Stizz rolled through and ended up meeting Michael Christmas and videographer and producer Goodwin (who eventually directed the “Shoutout” video) for the first time. Stizz also reconnected with the event’s organizer, Tim Larew, who became his manager and all-around point person. “I went to that shit by coincidence. Like I wasn’t even gonna go,” Stizz remembers.

Things got more serious when Christmas dropped “Daily.” “Maybe I should start taking rap seriously, start reading God’s signs, and stop sleeping,” Stizz remembers thinking to himself. After they’d met at the cypher, the group came together pretty quickly; according to Stizz, since then, Larew and Goodwin’s roles have become larger than just manager and videographer. “By the time ‘Daily’ dropped, those were my brothers,” Stizz says. “We kinda were a crew the whole time.”

“The first song Stizz put out, ‘Life,’ I remember he wrote that song way before he put it out,” Christmas remembers, “When he finally recorded it, everybody heard it and was like this song is fuckin’ crazy. And that’s how it all started. It didn’t start with me because I never, ever, ever had anything out. I love that now one of the main things in his music is don’t doubt him. ‘Cause people doubted him once, and it didn’t work… It’s been a real emotional time for me, seeing one of my best friends, seeing everything he said he was going to do—and he’s going to keep doing it.”

In the months leading up to Suffolk County, Stizz garnered more buzz as he released “Gone Til November” and “A-World,” two cuts that wouldn’t ultimately make his debut. Both songs showed the rapper’s exceptional ability to pen captivating hooks. It also showed outsiders how Stizz’s music is a direct reflection of his reserved but sharp personality. Like him, his songs are mellow and nonchalant—but rife with meaning and alive in their nuances. Suffolk County’s release only further solidified that impression, along with emphasizing his connection to the city of Boston.

That’s a relatively new thing for the city, which, despite a few notable artists, has never been much of a hip-hop hub. Stizz, in his own understated way as part of growing collective of associated acts, is helping to make it one—and show off a little of himself in the process. The Boston rapper’s depth comes through quietly in verses that at first glance mostly touch on drugs, women, and his city. In the first track off Suffolk County, “Ain’t Really Much,” he spits, “Flippin it, little shit, reminisce / Four spliffs and I just hit a lick / How the fuck did it come back to this / We have no choice man it just what it is,” waxing poetic on the cyclicality of life with the attitude of the guy who’s sitting on the couch next to you. This is the way he projects himself, unpretentious but authoritative. Ultimately, he’s offering a celebration of the city and his character. You just have to read between the lines to find it.
