i started this in september for the zine fest, this still counts! i thought, hmmm i’ve been listening to heaps of various forms of space scifi, what could i possibly do a zine about?

this was my first ever zine! i think i might do a follow-up of honorable mentions that didn’t make it in, i already had to modify the format cuz i had too much to say xD

I give you: an underrated sci-fi audio drama miniseries, Roguemaker!

Based on a discord-based RPG a friend of mine participated in, Roguemaker is a single-season complete story about a passenger spaceflight to an interstellar music festival... that gets hijacked and bombed. The passengers all escape into escape pods, and land on a planet that shouldn't exist. A locked-room mystery of a sense, the characters have to determine: who set the bomb? What were they after? And what does it have to do with this sunless planet that they conveniently happened to be nearby enough to land on?

Cool characters and a fun mystery! Though sometimes the audio is tough to understand :')

hi! wanderer’s lament was my favorite song (i paused and listened to it again before letting tarsul talk), and i was curious, is it a ǵnonw song or an about gardens original?

It's an ancient ǵnonw folk song! Something Woh́́ has been singing since their childhood, with the accompanying comforting nostalgia despite its haunting storyline. Since the ǵnonw live underground, our composer Emily went with a simple percussive sound for the instrumental portion of the song. Wanderer's Lament is also inspired by a similar moment in the first episode of The Strange Case of Starship Iris, in which characters stuck in space sing an old folk song (Whiskey in the Jar) together. (Also also, Emma wrote most of the lyrics right after seeing Dune in theatres...that mighta affected some things xD)

Absolutely loving the Behind the Science episode of Roguemaker. You can hear just how much thought and care was out into every aspect of the show, from world-building to character development to sound design. And I'm learning so much! It just makes me want to re-listen to the whole thing all over again!

okay i’m kissing the worldbuilding of roguemaker on the mouth i don’t think ive ever seen a space scifi setting where there’s just two species. or, there’s three, but the one was ancient and disappeared before the other two reached space. it’s really fascinating and a change of pace, like, instead of having all these intergalactic species going on, it’s just the humans and the gnonw. ep 1 starts us out with a convo btwn lowkey and woh, a human and gnonw, and they casually exposit for us that gnonw have double-chambered larynxes (can harmonize with their self) and live in a tidally-locked planet (static light&dark sides)(“night and day are places for me and times for you”) and as SOON as woh said that i was like Oh Okay pull up a chair i’m here for this. the two cultures are v different and they know Enough about each other but not everything and it’s so cool. i love sci-fi

Im just finishing Roguemaker and the whole time you just felt like My People (TM) which was definitely heightened by the bloopers and then you made a homestuck reference in the science episode and I damn near lost my mind

You didn't mention your tumblr but I figured there was a 99.5% chance you had one and luckily you included your twitch handle in the post you made about rereading homestuck and tumblr graciously placed it in the search results for me xD

ok I have a few things to say to this:

1. lol. lmao, even 2. this reminds me of the time that homestuck was mentioned on skyjacks and it knocked the wind out of me, so I'm glad I could provide that experience to someone else lol 3. well that's one point for the tumblr search function, I guess. for those keeping score at home, the tumblr search function now has one (1) point. 4.It's been a while since we recorded that so I had to go back into the transcripts to remember what I said and I can't believe I didn't figure it anyway since yes sir we are literally under siege by planet fucking jupiter continues to live in my head rent free to this day 5. in re: Your People(TM) yeah, Emma hasn't read homestuck but we're all extremely online fandom nerds, basically (ok, well not all of us. I think some of the cast members are like. normal.) I mean, Emma and I met in college at an (unchartered) Steven Universe screenings club that she ran, so yeah. I was going to say that this tells you basically everything you need to know about us, but then I remembered the particular reputation that the su fandom has gained over the last few years so uh. your view on what this means about what we are like as people may or may not be accurate. (In terms of me specifically, though, I've been on tumblr since I was 13 and spent a majority of my adolescence being really into homestuck and you can basically extrapolate everything about what I am like today based off of that)
