Dragon Ball 087
Tumblr media
The preliminaries are over, so now it’s time for the eight semifinalists to draw numbers for the tournament brackets.
Tumblr media
Tien talks smack to the other semifinalists, but when Chiaotzu does the same with Krillin, he gets really embarrassed about it.
Tumblr media
Normally, the brackets are supposed to be assigned at random, but Chiaotzu has telekinetic powers, which he uses to sort the brackets to Tien’s liking.
Tumblr media
I find this somewhat odd, since this ability requires Chiaotzu to not only move the papers inside the box, but also to read the numbers without being able to see them.   And numbers aren’t exactly Chiaotzu’s strong suit, so it’s kind of surprising that this cheating actually works.  So the matches are as follows:
Tumblr media
Tien and Yamcha really don’t like each other, so Tien wants him in the first round.   This suits Yamcha just fine.   I’m not sure if Tien simply assumes Yamcha is the strongest Turtle student of the three, or if he’s just going after Yamcha because he’s been standing up to Tien the most.
Tumblr media
No one knows what Manwolf’s deal is, except he seems to despise Chun, and so Tien figures they might as well fight in the first round.
Tumblr media
The first two matches were the only ones Tien wanted arranged, so it’s possible that Chiaotzu arranged this match by pure chance, or maybe he really does want to tackle Krillin first, as opposed to Goku or Panput
Tumblr media
And finally Goku vs. Panput.   I’m pretty sure I’ve watched this saga at least twice, and I still don’t remember Panput’s deal.   He’s rich and famous, but all I remember is that the real conflict with this match was Goku getting sidetracked by Panput’s goons.   Did this guy even have a personality, or was he just a bump in the road for Goku?
Tumblr media
There’s a whole bit where no one knows what happened to Master Roshi, and the Crane Hermit arranges a missing persons announcement on the public address system.   I feel bad for the poor lady who had to read it, since it was clearly a prank.
Here’s the thing: Why does anyone care?  Roshi’s not a baby.    If he wants to miss the tournament or watch it from someplace else, let him.   Bulma should be glad to get twenty minutes away from the guy.   Crane Hermit’s announcement was all about what a freaky-deaky perv he is, and it’s 100% true.

I mean, they all sort of barely put up with this guy, but as soon as the tournament’s about to start they all panic and wonder where he went.   Count your blessings, I say.  Then again, at least Roshi trained the boys to fight.   I still don’t understand how Oolong’s still hanging out with this crowd four years later.

The World Tournament Announcer starts us off, and it’s time for the semifinals.

Okay, so this Tien/Yamcha fight kicks ass.   It’s only like an episode and a half, but it’s phenomenal.   Easily Yamcha’s best fight in the whole series, and one of Tien’s best.    If you’re making a list of best Dragon Ball fights that don’t involve Goku, this one should probably be on it.
There’s an insert song about Yamcha here, which surprised me a little because I couldn’t remember hearing it before, but then I remembered that in the dub these two fought with no music whatsoever.   Oddly, it works pretty well both ways.
youtube
I mean, it’s just a great fight no matter how you slice it.   You could watch it with the sound down and still enjoy it.   These two guys wanna beat the crap out of each other, and they’re two of the best martial artists in the world.    Also, I think it kind of helps that they’re both about the same height, so it’s not a big guy stooping down to block little baby hands, like we’ve been seeing in this series so far.
Tumblr media
The big moment, for me anyway, is when Tien is forced to acknowledge--albiet privately-- that Yamcha is a worthy opponent.   He’s been talking a lot since he got here, but now it’s time for Tien to back it up, and it won’t be as effortless as he thought.
Tumblr media
The episode closes with Yamcha preparing to deploy the Shin Roga Fufu-ken, or “New Wolf Fang Fist”.  As awesome as this still is, I think they oversold the move a bit.   I’m pretty sure Yamcha won’t be launching ghost-wolves at Tien.    But you know, there’s no reason Yamcha couldn’t invent a move like that...

Dragonball Sketch Card: Yamcha "Roga Fufu Ken!" Playing some more with grey tones. I left the pencil this time instead of inking the lines. I like the result better than the last card. I always liked Yamcha even if he sucked most of the time. His fight with Tenshinha at the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai is still one of my favorite Dragonball moments. Great pre-"energy beams every second" fight.
