CTS A | WK12 Summative Assessment Prep — Session 3
I have always been interested in art since I was a kid, and I was so passionate about it that my dream was to be a painter. As I grew up, I became interested in visual design, and I was also interested in movies, so I dreamed of becoming a movie poster designer. If you ask me why I am interested in visual design, I think it connects well with the topic of this CTS class. One of the mind map topics of this CTS was collaboration, and it was very interesting for me to write down examples of collaborations with various subjects such as music, fashion, etc. Because when I think about my future, I don't want to be a person who dreams of only one profession, but I want to collaborate with various professions based on design and create wonderful work.
For instance, collaborating with music and C&E design could involve designing album covers, websites, and concert merchandise. I recently saw Olivia Rodrigo’s merchandise design, which impressed me due to its graphic and collage techniques, showcasing the power of collaboration. In such partnerships, the designer’s role is key in intuitively expressing the artist’s aesthetic, whether through album covers or visual elements, highlighting the significance of design in music culture.
Among the key collaborations between film and design, movie poster design stands out as a critical field. Movie poster designers play an essential role in the film industry, as they must capture the identity, story, and core aesthetics of a movie in a single image. This task is challenging and requires a deep understanding of both design and cinema. The lessons I learned in the CTS class, such as organizing thoughts and using diverse references, have played a significant role in connecting these two fields. My favorite movie poster designer, Siyoung Park, once said, "The way to broaden your design world is by exposing yourself to various fields, not just one designer." This advice resonates with what I learned in CTS, as exploring different fields fosters creativity and enhances design outcomes.

Summative Assessment #1
What has COVID-19 affected the Philippines? Every Filipino has been asking the same question ever since the pandemic started. Now that we are in the midst of it, we all ask the same questions. When will it end? What will happen to all of us? Will things ever be back to normal? Will things ever be the same? January 1st 2020, the start of a new year. Events to come will not be so pleasant. Australia has wildfires, US-Iran tension almost started WWIII with the assasination of a Iranian general, an unexpected death of a basketball legend, and more. Now reports spread throughout the globe about a virus in Wuhan Province in China. Investigation says the pathogen has been present ever since late December of 2019. Further investigation cited that the virus was already present since November 17 ,2020. Everyone around the globe was shocked but not threatened as they suspected this to be a pathogen similar to the bubonic plague of the 14’ Century ,but such diseases can now be treated with simple antibiotics. The world was concerned but nevertheless calm.. Until March 1 of 2020, the first reported case of COVID 19 in the Philippines. A 39- year old Chinese woman who has just been on a flight from China was later admitted into the San Lazaro Hospital in Manila for a sore throat and coughs.Under further supervision after a couple of days, a fever was struck upon the woman causing her to go to a vital situation. Further tests showed through a physical examination that she had Influenza B, human coronavirus 229E, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. These symptoms conclude her to be the first COVID-19 case in the Philippines. She was discharged after a few days as her symptoms dissolved. A fellow Chinese national who was travelling with the woman was also admitted to the hospital for the same symptoms, a 44 year old male. He was found to have the same symptoms but as time passed his condition deteriorated and was eventually killed, making him the first COVID-19 death outside of mainland China. As Filipinos found out about the news, the numbers of cases rocketed up as people started to panic-buy and more and more people went out to get supplies and prepare for the worst. Of Course there will be a lot of people who will not care about the current situation which makes them liability for the rapid increase of cases whether they were a part of the count or infected others by being carriers while they were oblivious of the disease. The safety of everybody was easily exposed with just the smallest of actions. A single droplet of saliva was believed to be a effective way of spreading the virus, making it very contagious. Everyone was consulted to stay in their homes as the virus passes. While the working middle class is in a struggle for keeping their jobs and trying to maintain a safe lifestyle. The poor have been affected the most. With their situation of housing in tight buildings. Socialdistancing was not enough. The need for supplies was now very evident with the constant trips to the supermarket. The poor are not so lucky when it comes to just going to the store and buying food and water and other amenities. They relied on food drives which were helpful but not consistent enough to help them through the pandemic which made everything worse. A new discovery was found that the virus may possibly be airborne, ensuing more chaos. While the people panicked about the current situation. So was the Philippine government. The idea of trying to contain a very dangerous virus that is very contagious is really terrifying fro many. Many government officials, especially the president, started to think about ways to at least contain this disease. On March 16, President Rodrigo Duterte officially issued a nationwide lockdown and quarantine. This means everyone was to stay at home no matter what until further notice. Everyone’s issue was their health and safety but, others. Like the Government, we're worried about our country. As a developing country. The Philippines was not well equipped for a virus outbreak, so much as a global pandemic. Economic powerhouses like China, Italy, Germany, and many more were already struggling with containment which meant a nightmare for the third world Philippines. The fact that we are located in East Asia, hundreds of miles away from the source that started it all. As mentioned, the Philippines is a still developing country which meant we were somehow reliant to foreign aid from countries such as the US at times like these. With the argo of foreign trade. The Philippine economy was not looking good. Philippine Stock exchange index shows that we gave up 60.85 points or 1.04% to close at 5,738.39. This basically means that since lockdown, businesses started to utilize smaller operations in order to cut back for losses ever since the last 5 months and to help the community. Considering the rate of cases reported is tipped all the way to the left. The need for tighter rules is needed. As a fact that the Philippines has one of the tightest lockdown regulations means that the smaller businesses are going bankrupt. The same can be applied to the bigger businesses such as Ayala Malls inc and SM Prime. Although SM primarily operates supermarkets and department stores which are allowed to be open. The same cannot be said for its rival who largely depends on the rent of stores. An analyst says that Ayala Malls inc. greatly dragged down the index of the Philippine economy with its rapid decrease of profit. As horrible as it may seem. The Philipppine economy isn’t really going down a spiral of national economic crisis. With the fame of Online shopping starting to rise. Businesses found other modes of operation through the means of the internet. Opportunities were opened to people where they can still make a living while for the most part staying in the comfort of their homes. With the resilience of the Filipino people. We have now gone through a whole year of dread and misery ,but together we faced this problem and did not let it control us.The rapid increase of cured patients gave hope to the Filipino people for a brighter future. As more tests are being conducted and more vaccines being trialled. The hope for a cure may be a little too optimistic for next year ,but as we go through this pandemic together. Our mind and souls will get stronger and sooner or later. It will all be a part of history.

Module 2: Summative
1. What rhetorical exigence spurred the writing of the commentary?
The commentary written by the Philippine College of Physicians president, Dr. Mario Panaligan, was meant to shed light on the intense distress the medical front liners in Manila faced during the height of the COVID-19 crisis. As the primary providers of healthcare and members of its system, he expressed that they felt extremely overwhelmed with the rising number of patients. Add in some anxiety and worry as they turn into patients themselves from exposure in the line of duty. Backed by other Philippine medical groups, he outlined seven main problems.
Hospitals are getting short staffed, unable to find cases and cope with the sheer amount of isolation and emergency care with rooms at full capacity. Contact tracing and quarantine mandate failures and inefficiencies should be looked into, as well as security for individuals who take public transportation to get to where they need to be. Safety in the workplace goes hand-in-hand with public compliance to protect others and oneself being a concern, along with social amelioration for those who need it the most. All these issues coalesce to make up the exigence of the letter, leading the rhetor to ask that Manila be placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) once again.
2. Who is the rhetorical audience? What are the characteristics of this rhetorical audience?
This letter was addressed to Philippine President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, thus making him the main rhetorical audience. Moreover, the concern was able to reach him through his main COVID-19 National Taskforce (NTF) implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and the Secretary of Department of Health (DOH) Francisco Duque III. With the request that the city be placed under ECQ, this commentary will also involve the authorities in charge of approving and implementing these quarantine laws and mandates.
Later calling for social amelioration, the rhetor also mentioned local government units (LGUs) and essential Philippine departments such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for help. They all make up the governing body and are in charge of important decision-making for the Filipino people, thus making them an appropriate audience for this rhetorical situation.
3. What are the constraints to the post’s rhetorical effectiveness?
The rhetor immediately attempted to appeal to the ethos by plastering the medical group’s name and logo on different parts of the paper. He then opened the letter by implicitly displaying rhetorical alignment by talking about the healthcare workers which includes him. He brings up the recent local developments with regards to the pandemic such as the cases and hospital closures in Manila, which can be constrained if the writer and the audience do not have the same level of knowledge on the subject. He then appeals to the pathos, mentioning the health workers’ mental and emotional discomfort and distress at the time. The timing of writing this letter, the middle of a crisis, is another constraint.
As the rhetor talks about the various issues in the healthcare system they’d like to address, he constructed aspirational identities throughout the speech by focusing on the welfare of not only patients, but just the people in general, as anyone can catch this disease from human droplets. As he goes down the list, he also provides suggestions and explains his reasons for each, which can be a constraint on the beliefs, motives, or overall mindset of the audience.
4. Does the number of likes/shares/retweets make the commentary or post more credible? If so, in what way? If not, why do you say so?
In the case of this letter, no amount of retweeting, liking, and sharing can make it more credible than it already is. From the get-go it has appealed to the audience’s ethos or the perceiver’s attitude toward the information source by using the Philippine College of Physicians’ official letterhead. It contained their logo, board members, chapters, address and contact information as well. It was also closed by the writer’s complete name, licensure, company position, along with the affiliate societies and groups backing them up, such as the Philippines’ Medical Association, Pediatric Society, Heart Association, Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, College of Chest Physicians, and others. He also employed a few rhetorical strategies while enumerating and describing the different problems the ECQ will address, a concrete way to demonstrate an ethical appeal. People might give their two cents on particular segments of this commentary and some constraints may be on the way, but the overall credibility of the source and the numerous ways he showed it will remain.
5. If the article was published only in offline media (newspapers, magazines etc.), would its persuasive quality change? How and why?
Since the letter is addressed to the general governing body, specifically the President himself, the authorities, LGUs, and certain Philippine departments, I believe publishing it in offline media first before it gets to the intended audience or at the same time might change the perception of the government officials and department heads with regards to its effectiveness and persuasive quality. It loses its confidentiality and exclusivity, and there is a possibility that the principal recipients might deem the letter insincere, knowing the outside audience will try to intervene or express different opinions and demands.
