"For most people, a rat is at best an unwelcome guest, and at worst, the target of immediate extermination. But in a field clinic in Tanzania, rats are colleagues—heroes even.
Far from a trash bin-dwelling NYC street rat, the African giant pouched rat is docile, intelligent, easier to train than some dogs, and for East Africans, the performer of lifesaving tuberculosis diagnoses every day.
400,000 new cases of tuberculosis (TB) were estimated to have been prevented by these rats, whose sense of smell would make a bloodhound take notice. As [TB is] the number-one killer among infectious diseases worldwide, many of those 400,000 can be translated into lives saved.
“Not only are we saving people’s lives, but we’re also changing these perspectives and raising awareness and appreciation for something as lowly as a rat,” said Cindy Fast, a behavioral neuroscientist who coaches the rodents for the nonprofit APOPO.
“Because our rats are our colleagues, and we really do see them as heroes.”
APOPO uses giant pouched rats to sniff out traces of TB in the saliva of patients. In parts of Tanzania, a saliva smear test under a microscope by a human may only be 20-40% effective at detecting TB.
By contrast, a giant pouched rat like Ms. Carolina, a now-retired service rat who worked for APOPO for 7 years, raised the rates of detection on TB samples by 40% in the clinic where she worked.

Pictured: An APOPO employee with one of their trained rats
It would take 4 days for scientists to analyze the number of samples that Carolina could screen in 20 minutes. For that reason, when Carolina retired last November, a party was thrown at the clinic in her honor, and she was given a cake.
TB is sometimes thought of as a thing of the past—a disease for which doctors used to prescribe “dry air,” leading a modern sense of humor to muse at the antiquated, pre-antibiotic medical advice.
But it remains the number-one cause of death globally from a single infectious pathogen, and Tefera Agizew, a physician and APOPO’s head of tuberculosis, told National Geographic that once people see what the nonprofit’s rodents can do to slow the spread, they “fall in love with them.”
3,000 times in her career did Carolina detect one of the six volatile compounds that can be used to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and she got a hero’s send-off to a special compound to live out the rest of her days with her closet friend and sniffer colleague Gilbert, in a shaded enclosure dubbed “Rat Florida.”
“We’ve made special little rat-friendly carrot cakes with little peanuts and things on it that the rat would enjoy,” Fast said. “Then we all stand around and we clap, and we give three cheers, hip hip hooray for the hero, and celebrate together. It’s really a touching moment.”
APOPO has made headlines for its use of these rats in other lifesaving tasks as well: landmine clearance.
One of the world’s great underreported scourges (a lot like TB, coincidentally) is landmine contamination. There are 110 million landmines or unexploded bombs in the ground right now in about 67 countries, covering thousands of square miles in potential danger. Thousands of civilians are killed or injured by these weapons every year.
GNN reported on APOPO’s demining efforts using pouched rats back in 2020. One rat named Magawa alone identified 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance across an area the size of 20 football fields.
If at the start of this story you didn’t like rats, maybe Magawa and Carolina will have changed your mind."

there’s this little cottage in the scottish countryside called white laggan bothy, and it’s essentially from the 18th-century and used as shelter.
tons of explorers visit the cottage and even stay there overnight since there aren’t any locks.
i’m just imagining a reader who is an explorer, and visits the white laggan bothy, but ends up finding more than she bargained for when it hits midnight.
it was about an hour hike to get to it, but you finally triumphed and found the little cottage sitting in the middle of the forest opening. it was a one room cabin, but big and comfy enough to be considered as a nice rest spot.
the sun was already beginning to set, the forest surrounding the area becoming nothing but a large dark blur. the forest seemed relatively void of any large, dangerous animals—or so you thought.
sometimes people were more dangerous then animals, anyway.
a few hours had passed since the sun fully hid behind the clouds, the night falling into place. you were tossing and turning, not able to fall asleep from the sounds of the world outside. you chalked it up to being little rodents scuttling around outside, but oh, were you wrong.
the creaking of the door being opened made your eyes widen, body immediately shooting upwards to see the intruder. it felt like a horror movie, the man standing in the doorway was huge. behemoth, if you will.
it was hard to get a good look at him since it was still dark, but the man had wide-set shoulders, and had to duck to get into the cottage—which was terrifying, because he was entering, even though it was quite obvious somebody was here. but that didn’t seem to prevent him from coming in.
“uhm, e-excuse me?!” you frantically called out.
the man just stood at the edge of the makeshift bed, seemingly observing you. at this angle, you could get a better look at him. his face was covered in scars, and his greasy blonde hair sat limply at the top of his head.
“get out!” you tried again, waiting for him to respond instead of just stare. technically, you couldn’t kick someone out. this cottage was completely open to the public.
that seemed to go through his head, his large hands reached out and wrapped around your ankles, pulling you towards him. your hands grabbed at the blankets around you, a futile attempt at leaving his grip.
“found m’self a lost bird.” he grunted out, picking you up without a second thought and throwing you over his shoulder. your fists whacked against his back, feet kicking out behind you. you couldn’t believe it.
what went from being a relaxing hike to an old cottage, turned into a mentally disturbed man claiming you as his, practically.
“you’re fucking crazy! i’ll call the police!”
“you won’t get any service out here, darlin’.” the man responded blankly.
the man landed a smack onto your ass, your body ceasing its movement for only a moment. the man seemed to be taking you somewhere away from the cottage. your heartbeat was rushing in your ears, you were sure that the man could hear it from his close proximity.
he brought you only a little bit further out, and the sound of a scottish lilt could be heard from behind you, but in front of the man carrying you.
“aye, found yerself a bonnie lass, simon!”
the man who was called simon just let out a grunt in response as he threw you down into the backseat of a truck. it was uncommon for people to bring cars out to this part of the woods, as it completely deviates off of the hiking trail.
the man with the scottish accent walks in front of the open door, a sick smile on his face.
“no need to be scared, bonnie, yer exactly where you need to be.”
maybe there are vicious predators in these woods, because you stumbled right into the wolves den.

Seven federal workers who abruptly lost their jobs in recent weeks say they are worried that thousands of biological samples—from human urine to frozen rodent organs—may be left to rot in a government laboratory in West Virginia. The workers left behind the samples, which they say include lungs, spleens, and brains collected from rats and mice, after the Trump administration laid off or placed on administrative leave about two-thirds of the staff working at facilities managed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) earlier this month.
The NIOSH researchers collected the tissue samples as part of experiments to determine how Americans may be impacted by chemicals and other substances they are exposed to at their jobs. Some of the samples are stored in a refrigerator that needs to be kept at -112 Farenheit at all times, while others are stored in liquid nitrogen. Unless someone inside the federal government continues to ensure the liquid nitrogen doesn’t totally evaporate, the samples will eventually defrost and begin to rot, according to three staff researchers who work with such materials.
“You can't really store them very long in a regular freezer—they won't be viable,” says Kyle Mandler, a toxicologist at the Morgantown NIOSH facility who was placed on administrative leave during the recent so-called reduction in force at the agency. “That clock is ticking, and every day is closer.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has historically overseen NIOSH, referred WIRED’s questions about the fate of the samples to the Department of Health and Human Services. HHS declined to comment on the record. But hours after WIRED contacted the agency, a current NIOSH staffer said that some remaining employees were abruptly told by higher-ups that the liquid nitrogen levels were being “monitored.”
One NIOSH researcher who lost their job tells WIRED that if the samples aren’t left to rot, they will probably be destroyed—a process that would involve placing them into biohazard bags and paying a third-party company to incinerate them. It’s unclear what may happen to other materials in the lab, such as chemicals used in experiments. The researcher said that a large shipment of chemicals had arrived the morning of the layoffs.
The Morgantown facility also houses historical tissue samples, including what the CDC describes as a “‘time capsule” of diseased human lungs from black lung victims. Current and former NIOSH employees who spoke to WIRED say they are not aware of any plans for these samples. “I have seen and held those samples in my hands,” Mandler tells WIRED. “There is nothing like that tissue bank anywhere in the world.”
Created as part of the Occupational Safety and Health Act signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970, NIOSH is responsible for conducting research into causes of work-related injuries and deaths. It also helps inform federal workplace regulations, such as safe exposure levels for various toxic substances.
In late March, HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that NIOSH would be moved from the CDC to a new entity called the “Administration for a Healthy America” as part of a “dramatic restructuring” plan that would involve eliminating 10,000 full-time employees at HHS.
Cathy Tinney-Zara, a worker at NIOSH’s Morgantown facility who spoke to WIRED in her capacity as the union representative, says that before they lost their jobs, the researchers at the facility had been actively studying how Gulf War soldiers were affected by exposure to Mustard Gas, how pregnant workers have been affected by exposure to PFAS chemicals, and how manufacturing workers contract lung fibrosis after inhaling nanoparticles.
Two Morgantown researchers—who like others in this story, asked to remain anonymous to avoid professional repercussions—say that their laid-off colleagues were also researching how agricultural workers are impacted by inhaling dust from hemp plants, and a possible link between exposure to chemical disinfectants and asthma. The lab was also about to begin developing a rapid toxicity test for chemicals that US troops may be exposed to while they are deployed.
Mandler says he was researching why some people who manufacture, cut, and install stone countertops were starting to get silicosis—a potentially fatal lung scarring and inflammation disease that makes it difficult to breathe—after just a few years on the job. Generally, he says, workers tend to get the disease after spending decades in the field.
“I have listened to men younger than me sit across the table and talk about how they feel like they're drowning in their own lungs because of these exposures, and they can’t see their children grow up,” Mandler says.
He adds that some of the NIOSH staffers who lost their jobs were testing how lung tissue reacts after being exposed to the dust from different brands of commercial synthetic quartz. The material, commonly used in countertops, is thought to cause more severe lung damage than exposure to pure natural quartz, Mandler says. He believes something in the manufacturing process may be to blame, but now that his research team at NIOSH has been dismantled, Mandler fears it will take longer for the scientific community to find the root cause.
Three Morgantown researchers who were affected by the job cuts tell WIRED that they have not received any information about who would be in charge of the facility’s biological samples after the reduction in force, how custody of them could be transferred, or what their ultimate fate may be. Since entire divisions at NIOSH were eliminated, one researcher says, they don’t even know who could take responsibility for the samples they oversaw at the facility.
Another researcher says that when the layoffs happened, the only instruction they received was “to destroy our purchase and travel cards, and maintenance was available to help us take personal items to our cars.”
The researcher says that CDC guidelines direct employees to keep physical samples and accompanying personally identifiable information under lock and key, and only certain authorized staff are permitted to access them. “My colleagues and I took this responsibility very seriously,” the researcher tells WIRED. “Many are worried about samples and what will become of them, sensitive and otherwise.”
Even before the recent reduction in force, Mandler and two other laid-off researchers say that a federal spending freeze ordered by the Trump administration in January had reduced the Morgantown facility’s supply of liquid nitrogen to “critical” levels. It took several weeks to restart the shipments.
In addition to samples taken from rodents, NIOSH’s frozen tissues include commercially produced immortalized cell lines—cells that can proliferate indefinitely and enable small tissue samples to grow into larger ones that can more easily be experimented on. Mandler tells WIRED that one small vial of immortalized cells cost about $600, and his team alone had almost 100 of them ready to use before they abruptly got laid off. Across all of the different research teams at NIOSH, Mandler estimates that the frozen vials and tissue samples they have bought would be worth “millions of dollars” in total.
The mice and rat cells come from live animals housed directly inside the Morgantown facility, which are usually cared for by a veterinarian and other support staff. The lab’s Morgantown’s attending veterinarian, Stephen Harvey, also lost his job as part of the reduction in force, according to a comment he made on LinkedIn.
Mandler says that, despite losing his job, Harvey has continued to work and care for the animals. Harvey declined an interview request from WIRED, but said in a LinkedIn message that the lab has “not euthanized any animals” and is trying to “find good solutions for them.” Tinney-Zara says that about 600 of the approximately 700 rodents at the Morgantown lab have been relocated to a nearby university.
One researcher at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh facility—whose work has focused on developing and modifying machines for monitoring the amount of dust and chemicals in the air—says they fear expensive instruments purchased by the government could also go to waste across different NIOSH facilities.
The researcher says that hundreds of machines in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh facility, many of which are worth tens of thousands of dollars, have to be used, calibrated, and serviced frequently in order to continue working properly. They point specifically to a device called an x-ray diffractometer, an instrument for identifying the elements in small physical samples, which they say is supposed to run constantly.
From their firsthand experience during Covid, the researcher says they know that fixing a long-dormant machine is expensive and can take many weeks, if it succeeds at all. Now, they worry that these instruments, and their specialized testing capabilities, will be abandoned and go to waste.
“We could be in a situation to leave behind millions of dollars of equipment and infrastructure in the labs,” the researcher tells WIRED.

Garbage cleanup in Jabalia ♻️
I’m in daily contact with a small team of volunteers in northern غaza who are helping severely devastated families in the area. These are families in tents living among the rubble of their homes, as well as newly-displaced people.
🌱 So far, support has gone towards: cash aid distribution to the families; emergency healthcare for a patient; rent for a family facing eviction; and distribution of fresh vegetable parcels.
🌱 Their next project is for urgent waste removal. With the aid stoppage in early March, fuel is incredibly expensive—the municipalities have therefore been forced to stop waste collection, meaning that waste is piling up high in the streets. The waste leeches harmful chemicals, pollutes the air, and encourages disease-ridden insects and rodents into very crowded areas of people with virtually no shelter. If the team can purchase fuel, they’ll be able to get a truck to clear the waste in the area—this is vital for the health of these families who are overwhelmingly disabled with highly-vulnerable medical needs. Meanwhile, as of this weekend, all hospitals in the north are out of service, so any prevention of disease through civil initiatives is incredibly urgent.
How to give:
Chuffed
PP: divyamper, note “J” (choose f&f)
Our accountability doc here lists all transfers to the team & how the money is used.
Give more than £10 and use your receipt to claim something in my shop, kurkar. I’m offering poetry, fiction, recipes, music commissions, and more.
£40/700

Keeping Your Home's Exterior in Top Shape: A Guide to Chimney Repair, UPVC, Gutters, Fascias, and Soffits
Hey roofers peeps! Let's talk about the often-overlooked, yet super important, elements of your home's exterior: chimneys, UPVC, gutters, fascias, and soffits. These components play a vital role in protecting your home from the elements and maintaining its curb appeal. Neglecting their upkeep can lead to costly repairs down the line.
Chimney Repair: Your chimney is your home's primary ventilation system. Regular inspections are crucial to identify cracks, leaks, or blockages that could lead to chimney fires or water damage. Look for signs of crumbling mortar, missing bricks, or staining on the interior walls. Professional chimney repair can prevent these issues from becoming major problems.
UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride): UPVC is a popular choice for fascias, soffits, and guttering due to its durability, low maintenance, and weather resistance. However, even UPVC needs occasional attention. Check for cracks, loose fittings, or discoloration. Repairing or replacing damaged UPVC components can prevent water damage and maintain the aesthetic appeal of your home.
Gutters, Fascias, and Soffits: These three work together to protect your home's exterior walls from water damage. Gutters collect rainwater, directing it away from your foundation. Fascias and soffits provide support for the roof and protect the eaves from the elements. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to prevent blockages and ensure proper water drainage. Look for signs of rot, damage, or leaks.
Why Regular Maintenance Matters:
Ignoring these areas can lead to:
Water damage: Leading to costly repairs to walls, ceilings, and even the structure of your home.
Pest infestations: Damaged areas can attract pests like rodents and insects.
Reduced curb appeal: A neglected exterior can significantly impact your home's aesthetic value.
Need help with any of these areas? Check out Aztec Roofing's expertise in these essential exterior maintenance services! https://www.aztecroofing.co.uk/other-roofing-services

"For the first time in 500 years, the European beaver has been seen in Portugal, a moment that one nonprofit has called “one of the most significant steps in the aquatic rewilding of Portuguese rivers.”
As GNN has reported in the case of the UK, there is no animal other than humans capable of engineering its natural environment at the same scale as the beaver, and it’s clearly this trait which has Portuguese ecologists jumping for joy.
Extinct in the small Iberian country since the 15th century, this large rodent has recently been reintroduced and restored in various parts of Portugal’s large neighbor. Gradually, signs began to appear that the beaver (Castor fibre) was progressively inching closer to Portugal, until recent camera trap footage confirmed the animal’s presence in the country.
“We’ve been on the lookout for this breakthrough for a few years now, and now we’re thrilled to confirm its return. The beaver is a natural ally in restoring the health of our rivers and wetlands and has a fundamental role to play in our river ecosystems,” says Pedro Prata, Team Leader at Rewilding Portugal.
Through its constant activity building dams, beavers transform landscapes into watery paradises for small fish, amphibians, invertebrates, insects, and birds. Their damning of rivers diverts water flow in various different directions, cuts channels for floodwater, and creates ponds and wetlands.
“We’re talking about a species that provides ecological services that no modern equipment can replicate with the same efficiency and scale, without costs and bureaucracy that can never be overcome. The beaver improves water quality, creates refuges for other species and helps us fight phenomena such as drought and fires,” emphasizes Prata.
Portugal suffers from both drought and wildfires, which the beaver’s impact can help prevent through the increased water retention in dryland soil, while the wetter lands beaver dams create act as natural fire breaks.
Beavers don’t only live in the forest, they will happily transform a desert river as well.
Rewilding Portugal, in an article celebrating the animal’s return, detailed how they have long since anticipated this arrival, and informed the relevant ecological authorities to prepare for the disruptive effects which beavers bring hand in hand with the positive ones.
France, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland have all had to cope with the occasional dam-bursting flood, or an agriculturalist complaining about their riverside plantations being damaged, or someone getting their trees gnawed down. They cope with it in different ways, which Rewilding Portugal say is a worthwhile accommodation for the benefits the beavers bring.
Previously, GNN reported that Rewilding Portugal have reintroduced European wood bison into the Greater Côa Valley ecosystem. As the beaver does in water, the bison does on land: engineering the landscape into a biodiverse and resilient patchwork of micro-ecologies."

Glue traps strike again!
Pest controls love to place glue traps as a quick solution.
Glue traps cause prolong suffering / animal cruelty.
Sadly many of the animals who get stuck in glue traps are not the intended targets. Just like this case where they placed for rodents, not realizing they had bats. House hold pets can also fall victim. We see many of our natural pest control (wildlife animals) affected like snakes, birds, bats, even larger animals like fox kits.
Animals trapped in the glue panic and struggle, which causes them to become even more helplessly stuck. Often, the glue tears off their fur, feathers, or skin. It can take days for them to die of starvation, self-inflicted injury, and/or exhaustion. Some suffocate when they fall face-first into the glue traps.
There’s many oil based solutions to help remove the glue traps. But once you’ve successfully removed the glue the animal is not saved yet. You now have the issue of the oil used to remove the glue trap. The animal should receive treatment for being “oiled,” as oil affects their ability to regulate body temperature.
If you come across an animal attached to a glue trap please either reach out to your local wildlife rehabber or take to your nearest veterinary for help. Please do not attempt to remove the glue trap yourself. You could put your self in harms way with a scared animal or cause further injuries to the animal.
If you have to hire a pest control or animal removal service please ask questions pertaining to their methods to prevent inhumane issues. If you need recommendations then reach out to a permitted Wildlife rehabber. Most work closely with ones they trust.

Ivyoliene Pet Service Full CC
Okay, I put full CC on pet business lot this time since I found it less interesting with only Maxis versions. I added a few animals that can be categorized as pets, so there will be a few glitches that can happen along the way, therefore I suggest you download recommended pet cc and mods for fixing some issues you might encounter.
The floor plan is similar to Pepe Pets, however, this is its remake version. I always thought that Pepe Pets has potential it just needs to be expanded and upgraded. The lot size is 3x3, enough for every pet service we usually have daily. I added the cow plant just for fun, but if you want to feed him/her you need to make your sims to be able to teleport (since it's dangerous to have townies get eaten hehe) otherwise your cowplant might die of hunger. Since my cowplant was already named I suggest install this mod by Episims, and this mod by Pforestsism
Unfortunately, this lot has already been used for quite some time, because I need to see whether this lot is safe to play for you guys, and turns out it does give a lot of problems; mostly burned trees (use it at your own risk :3). To prevent glitches I suggest you download these fixes:
FFS Lot Debugger: for force errors
Fire mod V2: preventing sims from going nuts
Rug Fix
Visitor controller: To prevent bad witches
Stuck Object Remover: So you don't have to constantly use 'move objects' cheat, make sure you don't nuke your selectable sims on the lot otherwise they won't be able to comeback, sims inside or on the objects are safe to nuke
Book of Talent: for those who are too lazy to go on vacation hehe
If your customer happens to leave before the bar is full, that's because the tree is invisibly burned, to fix it you either nuke the tree with stuck object remover or just manually remove it, and the fire will spawn on its own. All you need to do is to get Fire Safety Skills to extinguish it or get a fire alarm outside.
List of Pets:
Deedee Sims Rabbit Pen
Delonariels bird tree fix
Rodent and Lizard
Pet Goat, Sheep and Ilama
Okay, that's all for now, if you encounter more problems on the lot please let me know.
Download
PS: If you happen to be stucked with caged pets I suggest you nuke them with the SOR and rebuy them.
Thank you and hope you guys like it ^^
