Quick tip for anyone who is new to comics or who is not new to comics, but hasn't put enough effort into reading them yet:
You can NOT be a Cassandra's fan if you haven't read Batgirl (2000) & Batgirl (2008)
You can NOT be a Jason's fan if you haven't read "Batman: Under the Hood" & "Red Hood: Lost Days"
You can NOT be a Damian's fan if you haven't read "Robin: Son of Batman" & "Batman & Robin (2011)"
Not only are all 6 of these books really great reads on their own right that can be enjoyed by all readers, but they also define these 3 characters and reading all of them them is essential for understanding them, so if you haven't already, go read them!
#can you tell that DC released another of their 'essential' reading lists that had not actual essential books in them?#they didn't include any Batgirl books aside from the Burnside one#and they even called it genre defining lol#RHATO is included but not LD#Robin 2021 is included but not R:SoB#and the current Nightwing run by TT is included even though its still on-going (and bad)#cassandra cain#jason todd#Damian Wayne

My dear friend, you have NO IDEA how good it was to read that.
COMIC WRITERS! MOVIE WRITERS! OC WRITERS! FANFIC WRITERS! MYSELF INCLUDED! 👏 TAKE. NOTES! 👏 This'll help in the long run!
ROBIN: SON OF BATMAN is a prime example of using development wisely. Each scene should be important to the characters involved. Even the minor details. There's a reason why works like R:SOB are so good to read. It brings elements into full circle and benefits well to both plot AND characters.
Now, I'm gonna add a little bit more of what I noticed in the Nika/Damian dynamic again. Joshua has established from Nika herself that she cares about Damian. Sure. She sounds genuine. Bravo!
👏 Shippers you're welcome to rejoice 👏
But there's still issues I have regarding what she claimed: SECRECY.
Nika has decided NOT to share with Damian information to the possible revival of Ra's Al Ghul — who died during Robin 2021 but now establishes a ghost form/connection to Nika from Lazarus Planet: Next Evolution.
Of course, fans are welcome to say Nika is... "trying not to burden Damian" or "protecting him from (Ra's) and herself". Okay? Sure. But even shielding the truth is going to do more harm than good. Especially since Damian literally had to watch his grandfather die during the events of Robin 2021.
Nika CARES about Damian, right? So why isn't Nika trusting Damian with information that regards to HIM and HIS loved ones? 🤨
I don't understand people trying to justify bad writing just because it's their favorite character, I love Damian and yet I can recognize when he is been bad written, I don't have to defend the mediocrity of an author just because I liked it.
Someone tried to justify the bad decision of making Nika having thia dynamic of "I betrayed you but not really" or "I betrayed but there are no consequences" saying that is alright because Damian is forgive people and is compassive and trying to compare the situation qith Suren but there is a difference between forgiving and being compassive like he was with Suren than basically ignoring the whole "I took you heart without your knowledge and gave it to a villian that later put you on a tramp" and swept it under the rug.
It was bad written, even Damian being compassive, there wasn't any actual plot that needed Nika betraying him, there wasn't any actual explanation or any plot device from it or even maybe a couple of doubts from Damian before, being compassive is not equal to be trustful.
Let's not justify this shitty writing just because you like her character. Let's just say ut was bad writing that keep coming because they obviousky trying to push a dynamic there.

rereading the first volumes of batman and robin (2009) and robin: son of batman (2015) just makes it so clear that robin (2021) is moving at an absolutely glacial pace. by issue #6 b&r had managed to bond dick and damian and have them tackle multiple villains, including jason (who brought his own emotional baggage), and still have a narratively satisfying conclusion to those arcs. also by issue #6, r:sob wrapped up a journey around the world where damian had to grapple against his own past and find a kind of redemption, both for himself and his family, to persevere, managing to retcon talia and introduce maya in the process. but robin #6 just came out and damian is STILL on lazarus island, STILL seeing alfred’s ghost, and… nothing has really happened, narratively speaking, aside from the progression of the death tournament and superficial “bonding” with the other participants. no real movement on the mystery. no movement on damian’s emotional state. nothing. honestly? i’m bored
#sunspeak#half the time it feels like fluff that’s trying to appeal to the funny panels gang and the other half is like the plot of children’s anime
