Roberto Clemente Full Documentary
On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, a thirty-eight-year-old baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, boarded a DC-7 aircraft loaded with relief supplies for survivors of a catastrophic earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua. Concerned over reports that the Nicaraguan dictatorship was misusing shipments of aid, Clemente, a native of nearby Puerto Rico, hoped his involvement would persuade the government to distribute relief packages to the more than 300,000 people affected by the disaster. Shortly after takeoff, the overloaded aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, just one mile from the Puerto Rican coast. Roberto Clemente’s body was never recovered.
ROBERTO CLEMENTE is an in-depth look at an exceptional baseball player and committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination to become baseball’s first Latino superstar. Featuring interviews with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors David Maraniss and George F. Will, Clemente’s wife Vera, Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda, and former teammates, the documentary presents an intimate and revealing portrait of a man whose passion and grace made him a legend.

It seems so obvious but - there's a folk saint wiki?!
It's not obvious, this is like niche catholic thing. So folk saint are dead people or other spiritually powerful entities (such as indigenous spirits) venerated as saints but not canonized by Rome and this is the wiki I'm talking about. Praying to folk saints is most common in Latin America but it exists everywhere. Rome really dislikes this practice, saying the practice is "paganism" or "satanic", but who cares about what Rome thinks. People like to pray to folk saints because they feel more approachable than traditional (cough cough white European) saints and some people are outside of the "catholic" society (criminals, sex workers, addicts). We're not praying to them because we think they are God (just like we don't think canonize saints are God), we're asking them to pray for us.
(I only really pray to Saint Guinefort since he's a good boy and wish to keep my own puppy safe and healthy)
Santa Muerte is probably the most famous folk saint, popular amongst the most marginalized sectors of society, including criminals and drug traffickers but also migrants and queer people. Vice has an excellent mini-documentary about her. Her and like Santa Claus, he's pretty popular too.
Some other folk saints most people on Tumblr have heard of are: Stalin (patron saint of communism), Che Guevara (Warfare & revolution), Roberto Clemente (racism, athletes, Latinos), Princess Diana (mental health & tabloids), Pablo Escobar Gaviria (drug traffickers).

Inktober No. 24 - Quincy Trouppe was a professional baseball player and an amateur boxing champion. He was a catcher in the Negro Leagues from 1930 to 1949. He also played in the Mexican League, and the Canadian Provincial League. An exceptional catcher and switch-hitter, nicknamed the “Big Train” he also played for and managed the Cleveland Buckeyes, twice leading them to the Negro American League championship; the Buckeyes won the Negro World Series in 1945. Trouppe caught six games for the 1952 Cleveland Indians making his major league debut on April 30, 1952, he became one of the oldest rookies in MLB history at 39 years old. On May 3, he was behind the plate when relief pitcher "Toothpick Sam" Jones entered the game, forming the first black battery in American League history. He only caught 6 games and made 10 plate appearances for the Indians before being demoted to the minor leagues. After retiring from baseball he worked as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals for 10 years. He identified two outstanding young hitters and fielders and recommended Cardinals sign them, but he was told not to offer them any contracts. They were Roberto Clemente and Ernie Banks, two of the game's all time greatest players. Trouppe made lasting contributions to baseball and history. They include his 1977 self-published book, "20 Years Too Soon: Prelude to Major-League Integrated Baseball." He also compiled a valuable photograph and motion picture collection – supplying almost all of the Negro League footage shown in the Ken Burns documentary "Baseball.”

La Vida Baseball  Launches “The Year of 21” Multi-Platform Experience Dedicated To Roberto Clemente
Tumblr media
La Vida Baseball, the leading multi-language Latino baseball lifestyle media company, today announced the launch of “The Year of 21,” a multi-platform content initiative created to inform, engage and educate fans worldwide about the life, the impact and the legacy of Roberto Clemente.
In collaboration with a range of media platforms, content creators and unique voices, “The Year of 21” will elevate the living legacy of Clemente’s humanitarian worldview, cultural impact and athletic brilliance through an unprecedented year-spanning reflection of history, current-day vitality and impact well into the future. The season-long celebration launches in April.
“For baseball fans, Roberto Clemente and his number ‘21’ are truly iconic, and the spirit of his legacy is more relevant than ever right now,” La Vida Baseball Managing Director Jesse Menendez said. “2021 is the right moment to elevate and celebrate everything Clemente stands for. Using the entire “The Year of 21” to elevate his legacy is something La Vida Baseball, its platforms, its partners and its community are built to execute better than anyone.”
“On behalf of the Clemente family, we’re excited to be partnered with La Vida Baseball for ‘The Year of 21,’ Roberto Clemente, Jr. said. “We’ve had a great relationship with La Vida Baseball since they launched years ago and they are the right partner to continue our father’s legacy and build upon the growing positive movement of what the number 21 signifies through stories that involve fans, celebrities and generations around the world.”
La Vida Baseball has been acquiring exclusive content assets, securing commitments - headlined by full support of the Clemente Family - and conducting more than 100 in-depth interviews with current and former MLB players, fellow Hall of Famers, star-struck celebrity fans, Clemente family members and others to power the project.
“The Year of 21” programming lineup will include a signature documentary series, a lineup of incredible short-form films, all-star roundtables, a Mi Clemente video series, a dynamic podcast series, energizing live events, memorable regional tie-ins, limited-edition merchandise collaborations and exclusive collectibles, with even more programming elements to be released at key moments during The Year of 21. Additional media, content and sponsorship partners will be announced in the coming weeks.
The La Vida Baseball network was launched in 2017 by TeamWorks Media, the award-winning content studio, and has since become the hub of coverage and community of the Latino influence within baseball, its lifestyle, its players and its fans. La Vida Baseball has created more than a dozen content franchises featuring more than 200 current and former MLB players, baseball media and celebrity super-fans, including “Being Guillen,” featuring the family of longtime MLB star player and manager Ozzie Guillen; “Polvoro, Voz y Diamante,” a rollicking weekly Spanish-language show; the “La Vida Baseball Live” studio show; and wildly popular Instagram Stories and viral moments curated by on-air talent Jennifer Mercedes and Julie Alexandria, widely shared by MLB players and fans.
”In this time of such upheaval and social consciousness both in and out of the athletic world, there may be no more important figure to honor and recognize than Roberto Clemente, and we are excited to be able to work with the Clemente family and a growing list of partners to bring his entire story, as well as those of who he has impacted, and continues to impact to life,” TeamWorks Media CEO Jay Sharman said. “In all our work, we have seen the reverence and respect athletes from all walks of life, and especially Latino athletes, have for Roberto, and we feel that ‘The Year of 21’ will expand the celebration and appreciation of Roberto Clemente to an even wider, cross-generation audience.”
Clemente, the Hall of Fame outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates and one of the most inspiring athletes in modern history. Clemente’s charity work in Latin American and Caribbean countries during the off-seasons, especially his work in his native Puerto Rico with young people, was what he may be best remembered for. On December 31, 1972, he lost his life in a plane crash at the age of 38 while attempting to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The following season, the Pirates retired his uniform number 21, and MLB renamed its annual Commissioner's Award in his honor; now known as the Roberto Clemente Award, given to the player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team." His impact went well beyond his 3,000 hits and a myriad of other marks in and around baseball and the city of Pittsburgh. His trailblazing work for causes and in uniting peoples of different backgrounds across the Americas is even bigger, than his athletic impact.

Last week Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier made the front page of the New York Times, on account of his unruly mop of red hair.  Since George Steinbrenner’s leadership, the team has forbidden voluptuous hairstyles and facial hair, and fined players, including former captain Don Mattingly, who defied the rules.  In vivid contrast, Mets star pitchers Noah Syndegaard, Robert Gsellman and Jacob de Grom are all now, without controversy, sporting ungroomed, free-flowing locks, for a look that’s both hippie and hipster.
Unlike basketball, a game with awesome street credibility, baseball’s appeal remains stubbornly entwined with tradition, and its leaders have been uneasy to embrace the counterculture.  Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton’s 1969 memoir, Ball Four, shows how difficult it was for an honest, feeling young player of that time to honor both the traditions of the game and the feelings in the air.  Attitudes haven’t shifted all that much, at least within the Yankees organization.  Frazier cut his hair just days after the Times article.  In  many ways baseball culture seems more laced-up now than it was four decades ago.
Let us now remember Dock Ellis, the storied Pirates pitcher who threw a no-hitter in 1971 under the influence of LSD.  He sometimes wore his hair, on gameday, in curlers.   The documentary No No: A Dockumentary gives an engaging account of Ellis’ personal journey and clubhouse antics.  The Pirates teams of the late 1960′s and early 1970′s, where he made his mark, were deeply integrated, more black than white.  And, in 1971, the franchise became the first in Major League history to start a game with an entirely non-white lineup.  That team management embraced both Ellis -- with his abrasive, wildman, showmanship -- and teammate  Roberto Clemente -- with his righteous, elegant, calm -- speaks volumes.  Why can’t the Yankees foster the same diversity -- in culture and in character -- on their team?  And, if not, why can’t they just let their players grow their hair?
