“How often have clubmates faced each other in the World Cup final?” asks Mukhtar Khan.
Here’s Ben Cordes with an impressively thorough response. “The first domestic teammates to play on opposite sides in a World Cup final were Stuttgart’s José Basualdo (Argentina) and Guido Buchwald (West Germany) in 1990. The 1998 final between France and Brazil was the first instance with multiple examples: Ronaldo and Youri Djorkaeff (Internazionale), Leonardo and Marcel Desailly (Milan) plus Roberto Carlos and Christian Karembeu (Real Madrid).

World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 3, West Germany in 1990
As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.
We are just 3 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 3rd place we have Argentina playing in their third FIFA World Cup final in 12 years.
It was Argentina vs. West Germany in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. It was a repeat of the 1986 final just four years earlier and it was a match filled with controversy. Pedro MONZON of Argentina was sent off (becoming the first player ever in a final of a FIFA World Cup to get red carded) after having come on as a substitute in the 46th minute for Oscar RUGGERI.
Argentina were also without Claudio CANIGGIA who missed the match due to suspension. Roberto SENSINI was judged to have fouled Rudi VOLLER which lead to many protests by the Argentinian players but the referee decided to award a penalty. Andreas BREHME took the penalty for West Germany and scored in the 85th minute.
Gustavo DEZOTTI also received a red card and was sent off in the 87th minute, forcing Carlos BILARDO’s team to play with nine men. BREHME’s penalty was the only goal of the match as West Germany lifted their third FIFA World Cup.
Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match: 12. Sergio GOYCOCHEA 4. Jose BASUALDO 7. Jorge BURRUCHAGA 9. Gustavo DEZOTTI 10. Diego MARADONA 13. Nestor LORENZO 17. Roberto SENSINI 18. Jose SERRIZUELA 19. Oscar RUGGERI 20. Juan SIMON 21. Pedro TROGLIO
