Annette Badland Reveals What It Was Like Working on Outlander with Caitríona Balfe & Sam Heughan
From Ted Lasso to Doctor Who to Outlander, Annette Badland has been a low key legend in many a hit show. She sat down with SheKnows to chat all about her time on Outlander and told us what it was like working with Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan from the very beginning. She also looked back on and re-watched iconic scenes from season 1 of Outlander, where her character interacted with Jamie and Claire Fraser. Remembering some of her first scenes with Heughan and Balfe, she gives insight to what she saw in their dynamic on set that makes the show so strong, and reacts to Outlander’s most controversial and endearing scenes. As the no nonsense bar keep in Ted Lasso and the no nonsense Mrs. Fitz on Outlander, Badland has been silently ruling many shows from the sidelines as characters we just can’t forget. Badland also tells us what Outlander and Ted Lasso have in common, besides her, of course. Watch the exclusive video to take a walk back in time with Badland, as she recalls her time in Scotland on Outlander.
Caitríona Balfe and Annette Badland, Starz
Badland fondly looks back on her time with Outlander and recalls her first impressions of Balfe and Heughan. “I adore both of them,” she tells SheKnows and GoldDerby’s Robert Licuria. “Sam was the first person I met. I was cast way before other people. Sam, myself, and Tobias (Menzies) were the only three cast. I went for a costume fitting and Sam walked in the door. Apart from going, ‘Ohhh! I’ll just lean on this desk for a moment,’” she laughs. “He just blew me away, because he was honest and inclusive, and very well-mannered, and that was the thing that really took me. He is a handsome man, but it was his personality and his generosity that just – I kind of went, ‘Oh. This is a good and unusual human being.’ Normally, anyone as pretty as that, they have some arrogance. It’s hard not to be seduced into thinking you’re the best thing ever, and he didn’t have that at all,” she warmly recalls.
“And Caitríona and I got on from the very beginning,” Badland says, remembering one of their first directors who didn’t seem very friendly at first (but later was great on set). “It meant that Caitríona and I really bonded and had lots of conversations. She is a tremendous person, wonderful woman, just extraordinary, and deserves all the success she’s getting.” After re-watching a scene between Mrs. Fitz and Claire, we ask Badland to talk about the mutual affection between Mrs. Fitz and Claire, Badland replies, “Or Annette and Caitríona… Yes, we got on very, very well, Caitríona is very inclusive.” She fondly recalls, “Caitríona would be there at the door of (my trailer), going, ‘Come and have lunch with me, come on in, let’s go for a drink tonight.’ She was tremendous, it made the work infinitely more interesting, and exciting.” Badland expanded even more, “It’s very easy to work with her, she’s emotionally connected and she’s intelligent, and she’s a fine actress.” Some of her favorite times on set and off set were with Balfe. And off set, that included some strong drinks.
Badland reveals since she left, she watched a few seasons of Outlander but not the most recent ones. She confesses she would love to return to the show. (Except let’s be honest, Mrs. Fitz might be 150 years old, or is it 350 years old? Time-travel math is hard, no one knows). “I’m deeply hurt, no one’s thought about her, dreamt about her, manifested her!” Badland jokes. When we reveal that Balfe did, in fact, bring up Mrs. Fitz’s character in a season 6 interview with us, Badland laughs, “But in the series!” Asked whether Mrs. Fitz perhaps died, Badland quickly says, mock-offended, “I don’t think she has!”
You can immediately see Badland’s affection for Balfe, especially when she watches and talks about one of Mrs. Fitz and Claire’s first scenes together, which required Balfe and Badland to be on a closed set. Why? Because one of them was helping the other put clothes on. Suffice it to say, Balfe and Badland bonded quickly. In fact, she says they stuck together like glue, being the only two women on set full of Highlander men. Badland breaks down the scene where Mrs. Fitz has to help Claire put on a 1700s outfit, complete with a bum roll (yes, a roll around your bum), corsets (owwie), stockings, skirts, hand warmers, etc. She said they did that scene in two 20-minute takes, while the rest of the crew wondered what was taking so long. Hello, it’s not easy being a woman being put in a fancy straight boob jacket. There are a lot of laces! Also, corsets are rude. Balfe and Badland bonded fast and furiously, like a bum roll and corset. (That analogy works well, no one can tell me otherwise).
Caitríona Balfe and Annette Badland, Starz (Note: Brian’s choice. The publication used a gif here.)
When asked if she saw the chemistry between Balfe and Heughan from working with them, she answers quickly, “Oh yes. I mean they searched a long time for Claire. It was cast late, because they needed that chemistry, and it wasn’t happening with other people. It was just very potent, you could see it. We had some rehearsals, we met socially, so it was very clear that their sense of humor – they could laugh together. You know, it’s a hell of a task, what they’ve been through together is enormous. You could see… I think the humor more than anything, the kind of wry—you know what I mean-” she stops, then laughs, raising an eyebrow.
Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan Starz
Badland re-watches a number of scenes from the first season, including her very scene with Balfe and Heughan’s Claire and Jamie in “Castle Leoch.” She breaks down why she thinks the chemistry between Balfe and Heughan sets this show apart from others. She re-watches scenes from the episode “The Reckoning,” where Jamie and Claire have returned from their unexpected wedding, have a huge fight and an equally as huge make up. She also tells us what she really thinks of her on-screen granddaughter, Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) when she re-watches scenes from the episode, “By the Pricking of My Thumbs,” where Claire slaps Laoghaire. Let’s just say, the phrase, “mucky, little hussy” is used. Correct. Mucky. Little. Hussy. Don’t upset Mrs. Fitz, or Annette Badland, people. It will not go well for you. (And by you, I mean Laoghaire, your granny ain’t so happy with you).
After watching Balfe say in an interview that they could send a boat to get Mrs. Fitz, Badland suggests the Outlander prequel no one would object to, “Bum Rolls and Corsets: The Untold Mrs. Fitz Years,” where Mrs. Fitz arrives in America on a boat and is reunited with Claire and Jamie. And they all live happily ever after, shedding their bum rolls, and throwing back some of Jamie’s whisky. (This is 200+ years before the whisky would be named Sassenach).
Badland also answers fan questions, one of which was whether she thought Ted Lasso might be a secret Outlander fan. Is Ted Lasso meets Outlander the crossover we all deserve? If the two shows joined forces, pretty sure their theme song would probably go a little something like, “Sing me a song of a Lasso that’s gone, say could that Lasso be I?” Picture it 1776, Jamie, Ted, and Claire run into Benedict Arnold…. Ted holds up a soccer ball, everyone is confused. Mrs. Fitz arrives on a boat and screams, “That lass is I.” Indeed, she is. Slàinte! Drams for everyone! End scene. Whether it’s called Outlasso or Tedlander, if Annette Badland is in it, we’re watching. And add Ted Lasso in a bum roll and corset, Jamie and Claire inexplicably playing soccer, we’re really watching now, but with many strong drinks.
To wrap, we asked Badland the most important question of them all, is she Team Jamie or Team Claire? Let’s just say she didn’t want to choose between them, but she did, and she didn’t, and it’s perfect, but you’ll have to watch to find out. So go on, check out this little Droughtlander chat while you wait for Outlander to return in Summer 2023.
Remember… Some of (Badland’s) favorite times on set and off set were with Balfe. And off set, that included some strong drinks. — She Knows

The Gift beyond the Consideration!
Robert Licuria's upcoming interview with SH for GoldDerby (Australia) will be published this week. It's interesting to note that STARZ had previously sent a bottle of Gin as a gift to Licuria for his consideration, now SH is autographing his own Sassenach Gin. However, upon closer inspection of the bottle, one may notice that there are other interests in the label of the bottle of Gin beyond just promoting SH’s alcohol.🍸
What is the connection between Sassenach Gin and STARZ? Is SH's alcohol business related to the actor's contract? 🤔
HUBLANDER - Sidney 24th February 2024
@imahalfemptykindofgirl IMO, it seems that SH’s success heavily relies on the STARZ brand (not only as a TV actor but also in his business) I remember last year STARZ’s party at Verōnika in New York for season 7, there was plenty of SH-branded booze available, the same at STARZ’s party in Platform-Glasgow. Since the show doesn't feature gin, it's likely that the merchandise is arranged separately and that SH is paid. This is always a combination that falls short and doesn't support the actor's creativity.
Getting paid extra for merchandise arrangements rather than being paid just for his acting role does not seem to help the actor showcase his acting abilities. If he really has those skills 🤔

Saw that Robert from Gold Derby, the guy who’s interviewed Cait and talks about the show, tweeted he had just watched 405 and it was very good/emotional. That epi is titled Savages. I thought originally he was talking about the Blood of my Blood epi but that’s 406. Robert seems very high on the season so far he’s watched. Have a good day!
Hey there Anon! Apologies for the late reply!
Gold Derby (Robert, Amanda, and that other guy I forget the name of xD) all really love Outlander, so this is really great to hear. I think this is probably Claire’s ep with the Show!Universe’s version of Nayawenne (the writers changed all the Native American names for accuracy’s sake; she’ll be called Adawehi and played by Tantoo Cardinal -- I AM EXCITE.) and possibly the bear scene as well! Don’t quote me on that though xD
Robert, and Gold Derby in general, have all really been pushing for the Golden Globes and other award shows to notice Outlander more. He and Amanda Spears were really upset the last time the show got snubbed and actually had a really interesting discussion on why they were.
Though the Gold Derby “favorites” lists have always been a little hit or miss for me, I find I’m really hopeful about Robert’s reaction here. But their interviews with both Caitriona + Sam are always so well done, and really get to the depth of the season and their characters, so they definitely know what they’re about with this show. And as someone who absolutely loved 4x01 and thought 4x02 was well done, I’m very much looking forward to 4x05 and the rest of the season!
Hope you have a great day / night as well, Anon!

When asked about her golden globes nominations, the ever gracious and humble Cait responded:
It’s such a nice thing to get recognized. It’s a testament to the writing. You know I especially last year had some incredible episodes and I think when you’re given material that you can really sink your teeth into, it’s just such a joy as an actor…None of these moments happen on their own. You’re only ever as good as the person in scenes with you. And so when any of us get recognition like that, it's really nice for all of us because we work bloody hard, and it’s nice to get invited to a nice party, you know those things are really lovely. But at the same point, this job is just bloody brilliant anyway, so I kind of feel like I’m one of the lucky ones.

I think once we see G in action, she will absolutely smash it. Erik Anderson who is the founder of Awards Daily website / magazine tweeted yesterday that "the emmy is non-negotiable.' In the replies Robert Licuria who is a senior editor at Gold Derby said G is astounding. Screeners are with reviewers right now. Other tweets from Richard Crouse, @movi_boni, @BeTheBuddha, who have also seen S4 say she's amazing too. I'm excited to see her play a controversial character.
I hope she will be, anon! I don't really read lr listen to who people say is amazing and who isn't. Those opinions vary so much. People said Olivia Coleman is amazing as the Queen and I cannot for the life of me watch it. So I need to see it with my own eyes. Also, I don't really like the early hype because it puts so much pressure on everything and makes expectations so high. I'd rather go into it largely inbiased.
I'm really curious to see her play this role too.

The Rule of Coincidences
or
Kona wasn’t their first rodeo, kids.
I’ve seen a few posts recently that talk about coincidences as they relate to Sam and Cait’s whereabouts and relationships. Is it a coincidence that they both made Los Angeles their home base during the last few months of the hiatus after Sam finished his filming duties? Is it a coincidence that, after leaving LA, both ended up in NYC? Is it a coincidence that they both vacationed in Kona or that the resort Cait thanked followed both of them? Is it a coincidence that they posted pictures with pretty much every current and former OL costar/production team member they saw while in LA but, oops, forgot to take a picture with each other? Is it a coincidence that Sam makes pancakes in Cait’s kitchen on Valentine’s Day or watches her run a marathon from her bedroom (and bed) with Eddie in his lap?
I was reminded of something I read a while back from Seth Abramson, who is an attorney, professor and author that I follow on twitter. He posted a simple “rule of coincidences” that he used in his criminal investigations. Obviously we’re not talking about something as serious as a criminal investigation here, but the general principle of this rule can apply to any set of coincidences, including those surrounding SC. When looked at individually, some of the things we’ve witnessed might be viewed as mere chance, but when these individual occurrences pile up one after the other, can they truly still be considered coincidental?
The rule is:
--------------
1 coincidence? Yes
2 coincidences? Yes, maybe
3 coincidences? Likely not
4 coincidences? No
“Yes” means a coincidence may be just that. “No” means what you think is a coincidence isn't.
--------------
Through the years, we’ve amassed a plethora of “receipts” and observed a multitude of things that some choose to dismiss as coincidences. How many? Well that’s up for debate.
Sorry, Sam, you need a better source. It’s way more than 4 total. In fact, sometimes, even looking only at an individual event, there can be 3 or 4 coincidences surrounding it which, according to the theory above, would mean they’re likely not coincidences at all. Let’s try it out on Sam’s trip to Big Sur in June 2016. Were Sam and Cait actually there together?
The Beauty of Big Sur (June 2016)
1 coincidence (Yes): After finishing their Season 2 promotion is Los Angeles, they both more or less “disappear” for about a week.
Yes, they posted a bit on twitter (less than what would be considered normal for them at the time) and once each on IG during this period, but after June 9th for Sam and June 16th for Cait, we don’t see either again real-time until the LA Dodgers baseball game on June 22nd. ( Of course, we weren’t supposed to see one of them there and we most definitely weren’t supposed to see them together.)
2 coincidences (Yes, maybe): Cait follows Audi’s Tonya Meli in mid-June 2016. Sam posts his first Audi promotion in the US (in Big Sur, CA) later that same month.
On June 14th Cait did a web interview with Gold Derby. The interview was posted on twitter the next day (June 15th) by Robert Licuria. He tagged Cait, who then began to follow him on twitter. Her follow list also showed that, right before Robert, she followed Tonya Meli from Audi UK. At this point in time, Sam had endorsed Audi but Cait had not (and wouldn’t until January 2017) so the follow was curious.
3 coincidences (Likely not): Cait’s favorite vacation destination (per a 2014 interview) is the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. Sam takes his June Audi picture in Big Sur...just a few miles from Post Ranch Inn.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/travel/sns-201409160000--tms--celebtrvctnct-a20140916-20140916-story.html
Although Big Sur stretches for 75 miles along the California coast, Sam’s Audi pics are taken just 4 miles from Post Ranch and 2 miles from one of Cait’s favorite restaurants in Big Sur. (Deetjen’s)
Closer view of that 4 mile stretch.
Views from Post Ranch Inn, looking south.
View from Deetjen’s (correction: This is Nepenthe), looking south.
Notice the familiar land mass jutting out into the ocean in all of these pictures? It’s the same one that is in Sam’s Instagram pictures.
And here is the lookout spot with both that familiar land mass and the large rocks we see in his pictures.
Closeup of the narrower pull-off spot just in front of where Sam took his pictures.
SIDEBAR:
Before we move to coincidence #4, let’s talk about latergrams. We know they both post them and, of course, it’s a smart thing for them to do, especially in their industry. I always assume that any picture posted by Sam or Cait that includes their images (unless tied to official promo events) is a latergram.
On August 3, 2016, for example, Sam posted a picture of himself thanking MPC members for that year’s campaign but didn’t reveal the location of the picture in his post.
By August 3rd, Cait had posted pictures at least insinuating that she was vacationing on the Amalfi Coast and, if memory serves, there was at least a bit of speculation that this August 3rd picture of Sam could possibly be from there.
But a close look at both Sam’s June 27th Audi posts and this August 3rd picture reveals that they were actually taken in the same place…and at the same time (likely within minutes of each other)… in Big Sur.
So Sam simply took off his jacket and sunglasses, rolled up his sweats and sat on one of the rocks for the MPC picture, but he didn’t post it for several weeks. With that in mind, it’s also likely that his Audi pics were held for a bit before posting. He’s not going to want to announce his stay in Big Sur in real-time and risk fans coming in search of him. (Remember that fan who, after Sam posted his picture in front of the sign in North Carolina later this same year, drove 4 hours just in the hope of finding him there?)
On to coincidence #4...
4 coincidences (No): The person who took his pictures in Big Sur is a woman who resembles Cait.
Yes, I base this observation on a reflection (I can hear some of you groaning now.) but, as reflections go, this one is pretty clear. I just adjusted the picture’s lighting a bit and then highlighted the reflection in sepia so it’s easier to see.
Here is just the reflection as it’s further lightened/enhanced.
So we have a woman with long, dark hair and a long neck who is wearing comfy-looking clothes in her downtime. Hmm, who do we...and Sam...know that matches that description?
So, in summary, (1) Sam and Cait are both in California in June 2016, but their whereabouts are unknown for several days after their promotional duties end mid-month. (2) For no apparent reason, Cait follows Tonya Meli just before completing her final promo interview on June 16th. Sam posts an Audi pic, tagging Tonya, later that same month. We know he posts latergrams, so he likely took the picture earlier than it was posted. (3) Sam’s Audi pic is taken in BIg Sur and just a few miles from Cait’s all-time favorite vacation destination. (4) The person who took the picture is reflected on the side of the car and she resembles Cait.
Conclusion: 4 coincidences = No coincidence.

(vía Outlander Awards 2017 winners: YOU voted for best performances, episodes and moments of Seasons 1 & 2 [WATCH])
For the past few months “Outlander” fans have been casting their votes in Gold Derby’s inaugural Outlander Awards, which celebrate the best performances, episodes and moments from Season 1 and Season 2 of Starz’s hit romance epic. In the video above, Gold Derby’s Marcus James Dixon, Rob Licuria and Amanda Spears announce the final results of the 2017 Outlander Awards in all 12 categories. Be sure to let us know whether YOU agree or disagree with your fellow “Outlander” fans by sounding off down in the comments section.
While “Outlander” has amassed a passionate fan following over the course of its first three seasons, the time-traveling love story has so far failed to connect with Emmy voters. So far, the show has only nabbed three Emmy nominations: Best Original Dramatic Score (Bear McCreary) in 2015, and Best Costumes and Best Production Design in 2016. “Outlander” has had better luck at the Golden Globes, so the currently airing third season could earn even more nominationsthis year.

“A. Malcolm,” the sixth episode of season three of the Starz hit drama “Outlander,” was written by Matthew B. Roberts and directed by Norma Bailey. This is the episode that fans have waited so long to see, as the highly anticipated reunion between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) is finally realized. After decades apart, they rekindle their emotional and physical bond but Jamie’s new business dealings jeopardize their hopes for a simple life together.
In our ongoing video series, “Outlander” fan Rob Licuria is joined by Amanda Spears to dish the highs and lows of this chapter of the fantasy romance saga This season is based on “Voyager,” Diana Gabaldon’s third novel in the series of books.
“This is the one that everyone’s been waiting for! The print shop and the big reunion between our two lovers who have been separated by time and space,” Licuria gasps. “People have been talking about the print shop for months. Pretty much almost two years we’ve been talking about how good this print shop scene was going to be. For me, it didn’t really disappoint, because we got to see the first perspective in the previous episode, and then this episode we got to rewind a little and see it from Jamie’s perspective,” he says.
“It was about re-establishing a connection, and a bit of loss and coming out of this grief that they have both felt,” Licuria explains. “There was a lot of really complicated emotions in this, which I really appreciated. They are basically strangers again, and they will need to rekindle that relationship and that romance and get to know who they are now as opposed to who they were then.”
Spears agrees that this has been the highlight episode to date, and she hopes awards groups like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are paying attention. “I just need to know what does Sam Heughan have to do to get a Golden Globe nomination,” she ponders. See the chat in full by clicking on the video above.
