Chokeslam (2016)
I’m not going to give Chokeslam a break because it’s a Canadian production. Regardless of what country or who is responsible for bringing this story to life, it’s tired, unoriginal, and unmemorable.
Corey (Chris Marquette) is convinced by a chance encounter with old high-school classmate Luke (Michael Eklund, actually quite funny in his role) to attend his 10-year reunion. There, he meets up with “the one that got away”, his former best friend now turned professional wrestler, Sheena “Smasheena” DeWilde (Amanda Crew).
This is the kind of story that would’ve starred Jason Biggs 10 years ago and would’ve still made me groan back then. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t stand these types of comedy. You know it all by heart. The loser who hasn’t had a date since he humiliated himself in front of the entire school and lost that one hot girl that he never actually went out with. He’s been living with his mother for the past 10 years and when he meets up with the love interest again, she’s with some jerk with whom she has nothing in common. How long before the desperate chase right up to the airport?
Already, there’s a huge barrier to overcome with the tired story. Sinking Chokeslam further is the fact that the characters populating it are flat. So many of the film’s developments could be solved in a few minutes if people just acted logically, but then there wouldn’t be enough material to stretch this romantic comedy all the way to its 102-minute running time so here come the contrivances, again! I noted some wooden line deliveries here and there and wanted to look past them, but now that I’ve seen the whole film, I don’t really see a need to. It’s never genuinely funny, or romantic, you won’t be kept in suspense or feel gratified in any way when the predictable conclusion comes around. Some of the “twists” were so obvious I didn’t even realize they were supposed to be surprises until all of the characters on-screen looked bewildered. I guess some of the wrestling moves displayed are ok, but with the film being set in a small town, it’s not like there’s any kind of spectacle, even in the big climactic match at the end. I will also once again give praise to Michael Eklund. He steals the show.
When the opening credits came up and I realized that Chokeslam was a Canadian production, I got excited. I was ready for something new. There’s nothing uniquely Canuck about this film, and very little that’s good either. You’re unlikely to have heard of this comedy and believe me, you’re not missing out on anything by passing on Chokeslam. (Theatrical version on the big screen, March 25, 2017)

Chokeslam Review
“Chokeslam” (PG)
Directed by Robert Cuffley
(2017)
A movie about professional wrestling that is also a John Hughes-esque romantic comedy is all I could ever ask for. Chokeslam had been on my radar ever since I first heard about it entering production. As it prepares for it’s limited theatrical run, I’ve already seen it twice, simply because it is such a pleasure to watch. As a small indie Canadian film, I encourage everyone to go check out this movie.
Chokeslam is about pro-wrestler Sheena DeWilde (known globally as her alter-ego “Smasheena”) and her high school sweetheart Corey Swanson, as they reunite after 10 years. Their relationship is brought to life by the strong work of the co-leads, Amanda Crew and Chris Marquette. And the script really provides them with a lot to contend with. As the story unfolds, we find new revelations in their character. Smaller mannerisms are brought to the forefront, and their relationship is given a deeper meaning. Marquette and Crew do a great job of highlighting this, enabling us to fully invest in their characters and root for the success of their relationship. Marquette shows impeccable comedic timing, playing wonderfully off his co-stars, particularly the hilarious performance from Canadian Indie-darling Michael Eklund. Amanda Crew fully inhabits her role, making Sheena a genuinely charming character and “Smasheena” totally believable as a pro-wrestler. I’ve heard a lot of praise sent her way from co-star (and living wrestling legend) Mick Foley about how committed she was to the physicality of her role, and it’s easy to believe that watching the film.
Director Robert Cuffley deserves a great deal of praise simply for the respect he showed for the subject matter. Supporting actor (and former wrestler) Lance Storm put it best when he said that Cuffley made a movie that “laughs with pro-wrestling instead of at it”. The movie never makes a joke at the expense of wrestling itself but is willing to use it as a jumping off point for some great comedic moments- such as a hilarious backyard brawl, and a serious of one-liner puns from Eklund’s character that I can only imagine screenwriter Jason Long slapping his knee over. Robert Cuffley manages to elevate Chokeslam from being just a simple rom-com. He gives his actors space to perform. They aren’t bogged down with clichéd will-they or won’t-they sexual tension, but are rather working through legitimate obstacles. The movie also manages to find that innate indie Canadian charm. The low-budget wrestling scenes in a historic building showcase a small town with a great deal of charm, juxtaposed with the overwhelming awkwardness of a high school reunion. It leaves us with an equal sense of nostalgia and discomfort.
Ultimately this is a fantastic film that is a must see for anyone who is a fan of pro-wrestling, but also for anyone who is a supporter of Canadian cinema. Or even if you’re a fan of John Hughes. It’s utterly fulfilling, wickedly entertaining and an all-around feel good experience. So get out there, support some solidly talented people. Support this film.

Calgary productions top nominations for Alberta Film and Television Awards
Alberta may have trouble competing with British Columbia and other jurisdictions when it comes to attracting higher-budget TV and film projects, but a roundup of nominees for this year’s film and television awards shows that our homegrown industry continues to soldier on, especially in Calgary.
The 2017 nominations for the Alberta Film and Television Awards, dubbed the Rosies, were announced in downtown Calgary Tuesday morning by the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA), with local production companies Joe Media Group and SEVEN/24 Films tied for the most finalists with 17 each.
Not surprisingly, SEVEN/24’s CBC mainstay Heartland earned the most nominations among Calgary productions, racking up 11 nods in various categories.
CBC renewed the series for an 11th season last week and executive producer Jordy Randall says the success of Heartland proves that long-running series are the “lifeblood” of the industry when it comes to keeping skilled film and TV workers from leaving the province. Many in the Alberta industry were disappointed with the recent provincial budget that saw cuts to Alberta Media Fund, which is designed to lure film and TV work here.
“As an industry, we need to attract the series because it’s the long-running stuff that trains people and creates a legacy,” Randall says. “In Heartland, we are looking at directors who were first (assistant directors) last year; people who have grown up through the ranks. Series build the industry and the opportunity for a greater industry so I think we all have to make sure that all of the rules, financial or otherwise, are designed to support returning series.”
It’s an argument Alberta film and TV insiders have been making for years, suggesting that the Alberta Media Fund’s $5-million cap per project has been a barrier in attracting new productions, and their money, to Alberta.
In the Rosies’ best dramatic series category, all three finalists are from Calgary. Heartland will face off against the sci-fi show Wynonna Earp, which is also produced by SEVEN/24 and received six nominations, and Nomadic Pictures Hell on Wheels, which wrapped production in Alberta in 2015 and aired its final episode last summer. It received five nominations.
There are 23 categories in the class awards, which include feature and short films, TV, commercials and new media projects that were produced or co-produced by Alberta companies; and 33 craft categories, which are for individuals working in the industry who have been living in Alberta for the 2016 calendar year.
Of the nominees, 188 finalists are from Calgary-based productions, compared to 121 from Edmonton and 13 from other communities in Alberta.
Calgary productions fared well in dramatic feature and made-for-TV category, with locally shot films A Miracle on Christmas Lake, by director John Kissack, and Kurtis David Harder’s InControl competing with two features by Calgary filmmakers, Robert Cuffley’s Chokeslam and David Schultz’s Considering Love and Magic. Those four features will be up against Red Deer filmmaker Matthew Kooman’s She Has A Name and Chris Craddock’s It’s Not My Fault And I Don’t Care Anyway, an Edmonton-based feature that picked up 11 Rosie nominations.
Craddock, Schultz, Kissack, Kooman and Cuffley have been nominated in the best director (for drama over 30 minutes) category, as has longtime Heartland director Dean Bennett.
In the best actor category, Heartland’s Shaun Johnston received two nods, one for Heartland and one for his guest role in Wynonna Earp. Peter Skagen was also nominated for Wynonna Earp, as was Kristian Jackson from A Miracle on Christmas Lake and Edmonton actors Joel Taras and Jesse Lipscombe, for Recruiting Hell and It’s Not My Fault and I Don’t Care Anyway, respectively.
In the actress category, Heartland’s Amber Marshall is up against Anne Hawthorne from A Miracle on Christmas Lake, Edmonton actresses Laura Seabrook in Heartsong and Valerie Planche in It’s Not My Fault And I Don’t Care Anyway; and St. Albert’s Carlee Ryski, who is nominated for both On the Rocks and Canary.
Other notable Calgarians to receive nominations include local company Spotlight Productions. It received 13 nominations, including two for its documentary Queer Hutterite. Asha and Roda Siad’s short National Film Board documentary 19 Days, about the experiences of new immigrants to Calgary, picked up five nominations.
The Rosie Awards will be held April 29 at Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre. Calgary actress Michelle Thrush will host the event.

From the cover: Captain William Leefe Robinson, VC, RFC, was the first aviator to bring down an airship over England, at Cuffley, Hertfordshire, on 3 September 1916, for which feat he received the Victoria Cross for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
Robinsons fame immediately become world-wide and honours and gifts were showered upon him, to his embarrassment. Shortly after his triumph he was sent to France as a Flight Commander and met in combat the notorious Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen. Taken prisoner, he escaped on many occasions, resulting in very harsh treatment by his German captors.
The author has received stories from elderly eye-witnesses to the destruction of the ill-fated airship, Shutte-Lanz SL11, many of whom sent letters of memories long forgotten, of crushes on the airman who brought it down and the adulation of a grateful population.
William Leefe Robinson typified the courage and spirit of the young men who fought the first Battle of Britain in the First World War.
In 1988 the decorations and memorabilia of this gallant gentleman were auctioned at Christies, London, on the instructions of his niece, Mrs R. G. Libin, and the proceeds raised were used to fund a charitable trust entitled A Medal For Life to help children suffering from Leukaemia.
In the Into Battle series.
