Cathedral, Mountain, Moon: Single shots like this require planning. The first step is to realize that such an amazing triple-alignment actually takes place. The second step is to find the best location to photograph it. But it was the third step: being there at exactly the right time—and when the sky was clear—that was the hardest. Five times over six years the photographer tried and found bad weather. Finally, just ten days ago, the weather was perfect, and a photographic dream was realized. Taken in Piemonte, Italy, the cathedral in the foreground is the Basilica of Superga, the mountain in the middle is Monviso, and, well, you know which moon is in the background. Here, even though the setting Moon was captured in a crescent phase, the exposure was long enough for doubly reflected Earthlight, called the da Vinci glow, to illuminate the entire top of the Moon. At This Moment
“It is not the body that is important but the atmosphere around it. The atmosphere becomes permeated with this finer vibration, in the stillness. And another quality is there.
An axis begins to appear, of pure attention. There is a sensitivity. This atmosphere, filled with energy. The body, like an envelope.
Respect this atmosphere, this energy contained in the body. And then, even subtler energies can come into you—the Light can come into you.
All my thoughts, feelings, ideas are nothing compared to this precious treasure, this quality of energy that is not mine but what I am.
More and more, with attending to presence, allo'wing higher forces to enter, staying collected, returning, we can live in a new way.
You can serve this energy. And the energy can heal. From it can come my best action in the world, my best action for others. Help each other through living in this pure Attention.”
~ Michel de Salzmann, quoted in Fran Shaw's 'Notes on The Next Attention'

RFK Jr's 'Unconditional' Support of Israel Costing His Campaign
By Scott Horton Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s staffers keep resigning. Many antiwar Americans were thrilled when Kennedy announced last spring that he’d be running against Joe Biden in this year’s primaries and that he’d hired former Democratic congressman Dennis Kucinich to be his campaign manager. But Kucinich quit in the middle of October. At the beginning of November, Kennedy’s field team, led…

"Conrack" (1974) is a biographical drama based on the book "The Water Is Wide" by Pat Conroy. Conroy was a teacher assigned to an isolated Yamacraw Island (Daufuskie Island) off South Carolina's coast and populated mainly by poor black families. The children needed to be made aware of the outside world, and their education levels needed to be improved. They couldn't read, write, count, or spell their names, didn't know where they were, and were completely unaware of the world surrounding them. Jon Voight plays Pat Conroy, but due to the Gullah dialect, the children pronounce his name as Conrack. Voight has the support of a great cast that includes Madge Sinclair, Paul Winfield, Hume Cronyn, Tina Andrews, and Antonio Fargas. The children in the movie were from Brunswick, Georgia, at C.B. Greer Elementary School.
This movie has a feel-good story with lots of educational value. Aside from some of the messages implemented by Conroy throughout the film, the history surrounding the conditions of the Gullah people is worth further exploration. Even Magde Sinclair's character as the principal used dated practices in the classroom. "We are off the plantation, Mrs. Scott, and I'll be damn if you turn me into an overseer." Conroy is a liberal individual reformed from the ideologies that he used to carry. In his new teaching environment, he employs various tactics to reach the children, and the education develops into something outside of school books.
It's easy to dismiss this as another white savior movie narrative, but it's a good film and story with some worthy discussion topics. It's sincere and honest. The scenery is stunning in the movie. If you're familiar with the Lowcountry region of the U.S., then landscaping will be nostalgic to you when you see the film. I highly recommend this movie for viewing.
Director: Martin Ritt Writers: Pat Conroy, Irving Ravetch, Harriet Frank Jr.
Starring Jon Voight, Paul Winfield, Madge Sinclair, Tina Andrews, Antonio Fargas, Hume Cronyn, Ruth Attaway, James O'Rear, Gracia Lee, C.P. MacDonald, Jane Moreland, Thomas Horton, Nancy Butler, Robert W. Page
Storyline In this uplifting drama based on the memoir "The Water is Wide," Pat Conroy (Jon Voight) accepts a teaching position on an isolated island in South Carolina. There, he finds a class of illiterate students and takes on the challenge of educating them. Conroy contradicts the lax institutional standards and exposes his students to various topics. Still, those in power do not take kindly to his efforts.

What passes for identity in America is a series of myths about one’s heroic ancestors. It’s astounding to me, for example, that so many people really appear to believe that the country was founded by a band of heroes who wanted to be free. That happens not to be true. What happened was that some people left Europe because they couldn’t stay there any longer and had to go someplace else to make it. That’s all. They were hungry, they were poor, they were convicts. Those who were making it in England, for example, did not get on the Mayflower. That’s how the country was settled. Not by Gary Cooper. Yet we have a whole race of people, a whole republic, who believe the myths to the point where even today they select political representatives, as far as I can tell, by how closely they resemble Gary Cooper. Now this is dangerously infantile, and it shows in every level of national life.

Brother! I’m not despondent and I haven’t lost heart. Life is everywhere, life is in us ourselves, not outside. There will be people by my side, and to be a human being among people and to remain one forever, no matter in what circumstances, not to grow despondent and not to lose heart — that’s what life is all about, that’s its task. I have come to recognize that. The idea has entered my flesh and blood. Yes its true! The head that created, lived the highest life of art, which recognized and got used to the exalted needs of the spirit, that head is already cut off from my shoulders. There was a memory and images created and not yet embodied by me.
—Fëdor Mikhailovich Dostoevskiy, letter to his brother Mikhail Dostoevskiy, Dec 22, 1849 (OS) [h/t Robert Scott Horton]
