Neon Adjuration - Start
The bike sputtered to death on a cliché middle of nowhere American road. It might have well been straight out of a movie set with the rows of corn, gold light, and nothing else around for miles.
Jason was less than impressed.
After nearly an hour of pushing his bike and with the idyllic light quickly fading he was even less impressed. It wasn’t as if he didn’t have options. His insurance came with roadside assistance (he thought), he could give in and call a sibling to steal the Batplane and come get him, or a corn field wasn’t the worst place he’d ever slept. He had options, just none of them were really appealing.
Recognizing that the feeling was stupid didn’t make calling for help feel any less like giving up.
The corn field had to have rodents. As he had pushed his bike, they had turned from carefully manicured rows into wild, unmanaged looking things. Jason had enough sharing a bed space with rodents as a street kid to want to do it again. Jason was probably about ten minutes away from giving in and calling Dick when he saw the glow.
It was neon salvation looming out of the oppressive darkness.
The cyan light spread the furthest, but Jason could also catch magenta from where the sign was peering around the edge of what must be the shop the sign was connected too. The cast of the cyan light made the corn feel otherworldly, and Jason pushed his bike slightly faster. More of the sign was revealed with each step, carefully crafted letter by carefully crafted letter.
Jason nearly sagged in relief. Not only was it finally, blessedly civilization, but it was a mechanics shop. ‘Fix-it Freddy’s’, the sign cheerfully proclaimed. It sat next to just the sort of building that looked like it might hold up to the claim. The base structure was probably from the late 40’s, that magical time of growth when the war and dust had both faded, but it had obviously been altered and changed and repainted hundreds of times. Just from the light of the neon and the one, lonely white flood light above the large roll up door Jason could see a myriad of colors. The current one seemed to be an already fading cyan to match the sign.
Praying that shop either had someone still working or cheap security and a lock he could jimmy, Jason leaned his bike against his tired leg and rang the bell between the roll up door and the man door. His finger was barely off the buzzer before the aluminum panels shuddered and groaned. Creaking with all of the years in it, the door rolled up.
Hanging onto the chain was, well, not exactly what Jason was expecting to find out in the corn fields. They were young, Jason’s or close enough. The black hair was wild, long in the middle and pushed around from a long day of working with engine grease and oil but shaved close on the sides. The way the neon light caught their eyes practically made them glow. Their smile was almost concernedly easy. “Can I help you?”
“Yeah,” Jason said and then had to clear his throat and try again. “Yeah. I guess you’re Freddy?”
They laughed, tossing their head back. Magenta light brushed along the length of their throat. “Nah, Freddy’s been dead for nearly thirty years, not that it would stop him from working. I’m Danny, this is my place now. Why don’t you roll your bike in and we’ll take a look at it, okay stranger?”
“Jason,” he said reflexively.
“Jason,” Danny repeated with that same easy smile.

A Date with Monique
Tumblr media
Okay, I'm blaming this squarely on @onereyofstarlight, @katblu42 and @gaviiadastra .
Have a little roadside assistance. Younger Earth and Sky and a lot of frustration for at least one of them :D
Hope it makes some kind of sense as I wrote most of it, ironically, on the side of a road :D It is possibly ridiculous.
-o-o-o-
“Aren’t you rich or something?”
Scott looked up at his date and mentally lowered the number on her scorecard for the night. “Yeah, so?”
She waved a hand in a random direction. “Can’t you call in a helicopter or something? I’m getting burrs in my stockings.”
That had him peering down the length of her long legs to the heels at their end. The legs were very nice indeed, even in the twilight darkness. But she was right. The grasses on the roadside verge had decided that she could transport their seeds quite well.
He wasn’t going to mention the bug on her shoe.
“No, we don’t do that.”
“Why not?” There was a whine to her voice that hadn’t been there before. Perhaps their unfortunate circumstances were a catalyst to revelations of her true nature.
“Help is on the way. He won’t be long.”
She slapped at her arm. “Ew, mosquito!”
Scott was leaning against his motorcycle. His motorcycle that was no longer motoring due to a busted spark plug. He had no spare, so that had necessitated a phone call.
That phone call was going to cost him because Virgil had been ranting at Scott for several weeks now that his bike needed a service.
He’d been busy.
Okay, he had forgotten.
And tonight was pleasantly unexpected. Well, it was pleasant until the bike stopped doing what he needed it to do.
“Who won’t be long? Did you call your father? I’d like to meet the famous Jeff Tracy.”
Oh, I bet you would. Her scorecard was dropping by the minute. Mentioning Jeff Tracy and his billions wasn’t the best way to get into favour with his eldest son. There were many opportunists out there…to use kind terms…apparently Grandma had at least a twenty-mile radius of influence when it came to language, even unspoken.
“Dad isn’t home.”
“Oh.” That deflated her.
Wonder what she will think of Virgil’s truck.
As if magicked into existence by the thought, a familiar rumble ramped up beyond the crest down the road. Moments later his brother’s old truck ambled over the top, its yellow headlamps lighting up the country road his bike had decided to die on.
“Here he is.”
“Thank god.”
Scott arched an eyebrow and wondered if his date would think the same once she was onboard.
Virgil’s truck was a workhorse. He kept her fully functional, but she did the hard yards for Virgil’s engineering and repair projects. The truck used to be Grandpa’s and, considering its age, was probably his grandfather’s before him.
Virgil adored her. But she was old and she showed it.
The truck creaked to a stop just in front of Scott’s bike, Virgil throwing open the driver’s side door and climbing out.
It was getting dark, but Scott didn’t need to see his brother’s face to know what expression was on it.
He cut him off before he could say a thing. “I know you told me, Virg.” He held up his hands. “I’m sorry.”
His brother snorted. “Live and learn.” He held up a spark plug. “This should do the trick.
Of course, being Virgil, he had brought his tool kit and sufficient lighting. A soft elbow to Scott’s arm and he was crouching down, pulling the guts out of Scott’s bike.
“Are you able to take me home in your truck?”
Both brothers looked up at his date.
Virgil answered first. “I guess I can, if you really want to.”
“It’s part of the service, isn’t it? Roadside assistance?”
“Um…”
“He’s my brother, Monique.”
“Your brother? Which one?” Yeah, there you go. She was showing much more interest in Virgil now.
Virgil, being Virgil, either that or just simply getting revenge on Scott for interrupting his piano practise, unfolded his legs and stood up, holding out a hand. “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’m Virgil Tracy.”
Scott bit the inside of his cheek as Monique took his brother’s hand and clasped it in both of hers. “Thank you so much for coming to our rescue.”
“Not the first time, ma’am, unlikely to be the last.”
Okay, his brother was dead for that line, no matter how true.
As Virgil extricated his hand from her clasp, Scott wondered if Monique would appreciate the grease his brother had probably shared with her.
Virgil was notorious for sporting a variety of grotty substances. And besides, his hands had been in the guts of his bike, for goodness’ sake.
Monique was making a point of leaning over said bike, despite her white dress, looking down at Virgil, and displaying her ample feminine attributes.
An hour ago, Scott had been admiring said attributes over dinner, all blonde curls, red lips, and alluring figure, but now he was no longer interested.
As for Virgil, his brother was clueless as usual, likely finding more interest in bike bits than the bits almost hanging in his face…oh, c’mon, now she was getting ridiculous.
Scott stepped around to her side. “Thank you for a lovely meal tonight, Monique. Apologies for the breakdown.”
She waved a hand in Scott’s direction. “It happens.” She didn’t even bother to look at him. “Virgil, dear, have you fixed the problem?”
Scott rolled his eyes.
Virgil was frowning at the bike’s engine, predictably oblivious. “Scott, when was the last time you had her serviced?”
Scott blinked away the non-sequitur. “Last May.”
“Where?”
“On base.”
Virgil grunted. “I’ll do it next time.” He stood up and chucked a tool into his kit. “You’re both riding with me tonight.”
“It’s not just the spark plug?”
“It’s not just the spark plug. I’ll overhaul her tomorrow. Tonight, it’s you me and Monique.”
Did she really have to suddenly look so eager?
Scott sighed and waved a hand. “Monique, meet Virgil Tracy and his truck…named Monique. Looks like she’s our ride tonight.”
“Oh.”
“Your name is Monique?” Virgil really could do the innocent and clueless so well sometimes.
Scott grabbed him by a shoulder and wrapped his arm around his brother. “Yes, little bro, I had a date with Monique tonight.”
That set Virgil grinning.
Oh yes, Scott was going to pay for this one. Possibly forever.
Monique, the one with two legs rather than four wheels, darted around Scott’s bike and looped her arm in one of Virgil’s. “Thank you again for saving us. Can you drive me home tonight?”
Unbelievable.
“Not a problem, Monique.”
Now he wasn’t sure which to strangle first.
“I’ll just load Scott’s bike into the back and we can get you home safe.” And yes, his little brother grabbed Scott’s motorcycle, rolled it over, and lifted it - by himself, with zero effort - into the back of his truck.
For a moment there he seriously thought Monique was going to swoon.
The thing was, Scott could call his brother an ass, but it was likely that Virgil had zero clue about the effect of his actions. He was known to lug stuff around the farm all the time, and this was probably just another case of getting the job done.
Virgil wandered back to them, wiping his dirty hands on an equally dirty rag. He looked up at Scott and frowned. “What?”
“Get in the car.”
“Truck.”
“Whatever.”
Of course, Monique made sure she was in the middle and virtually threw herself at his brother as they drove between the dark fields back to her apartment in town.
Scott might as well not have been there.
Probably just as well. Her motives were now clearly obvious and he had no interest in pursuing her further.
His main concern now was ungluing her from his lug of a brother. As they pulled up out the front of her block, Virgil was talking about the family history of his truck and how it had been handed down from Tracy to Tracy.
Monique was suspiciously interested. Earlier in the night she had claimed to hate listening to men talk about their cars. Scott had been glad he had his bike.
Apparently, it depended on which Tracy brother she was talking to.
What had he seen in her anyway?
“So, um, can I see you tomorrow?” She was practically pawing Virgil’s shirt.
“Um…”
Hmm, maybe his brother wasn’t as clueless as he appeared.
Scott interrupted. “I’m sorry, Monique, Virgil has to fly out for treatment tomorrow.”
“What?!”
Hmm, their voices did make an interesting harmony.
“Treatment?” Really? Now she was going to pull the ‘poor boy, I’ll look after you’ thing? So many doe eyes up at his brother.
“Okay, that’s it.” Scott shoved his door open and climbed out, attempting to urge her out after him. “I’m sorry for the inconvenience of the breakdown, Monique, but I need to get Virgil home.”
“What?” Well, he was going to pay for this forever, might as well make it worth it. Virgil was frowning up at him almost enough to break an eyebrow.
“Oh, okay.” She even managed to look put out. “I hope to see you soon, Virgil.”
“Uh, yeah.” Virgil’s hands actually squirmed on the steering wheel.
“Oh, I nearly forgot.” She fussed around in her purse. “I don’t have a pen, so I guess this will have to do.”
And the woman wrote her phone number in lipstick on Virgil’s forearm.
His brother seemed to be frozen.
To top it off, she then re-did her lips with a smile.
Scott hoped she was enjoying the engine grease that…no doubt…was the lipstick’s new flavour.
Finally, little miss Marilyn Monroe slipped out of the car and strode past Scott with a bounce in her step. She waved at Virgil over one shoulder with a smile before disappearing down the path to her apartment.
Both Tracy brothers just stared for a moment.
Scott was wondering what her reaction would be when she finally looked in the mirror. Even in the shadows of the street lamps he could see that her white dress was now streaked in anything but.
Might be a good time to make an exit.
He slid back into the truck beside Virgil who was staring at his lipstick vandalised arm.
“She’s interesting.”
“Not your type.” Not in a million years was she getting anywhere near his brother.
“So she’s yours then?” And yes, his brother was grinning fit to split something.
He glared at Virgil. “Just drive.”

Long before Dave Myers, one half of the TV duo the Hairy Bikers, was hairy, or a biker, he was a cook. While still a child, he prepared family meals when his mother, a former shipyard crane driver, became so debilitated by multiple sclerosis she was scarcely able to leave her bed. “Dad and I became Mam’s carers, muddling through each day,” said Myers, who has died aged 66. “Sometimes I got out a cookbook and made a pie or a stew out of whatever ingredients we had in.”
His mother had been “a fabulous cook and was often preparing food while I played at her feet”. His father, the foreman of a local paper mill, would put little Dave on the saddle of his motorbike so he could pretend to ride. “I loved the smell of oil and machinery and rubber; just one whiff would set my pulse racing.”
But it was only half a lifetime later that Myers, after many years of working as a television makeup artist, managed to make an onscreen career by combining these two childhood passions. In 2004, when he was 45, Myers and his friend Simon King, a locations manager on the Harry Potter films, pitched their idea for a TV show focusing on motorbikes and food to the BBC. “It was midlife crisis time and you can’t have more of a midlife crisis than going off on a motorbike,” said Myers.
The show’s premise was that two burly, hirsute motorcyclists would visit foreign locales, often getting off their bikes to cook by the roadside. In the first episode of The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook (2006), the pair motored through Namibia, stopping off to cook crocodile satay and oryx rolls.
This culinary travelogue ran across three series, taking them to Portugal, Vietnam, Turkey and Mexico, and became such a hit with the viewers that a memo circulated the BBC praising the two men for winning over “a difficult-to-reach audience”. “Basically a ‘difficult-to-reach audience’ translates as ‘normal people’,” said King.
The two self-taught cooks had a disarmingly unpretentious love of food and easy on-screen banter redolent of Keith Floyd, if less bibulous, or Clarissa Dickson Wright and Jennifer Paterson, if less posh. In a sense, Myers and King were the male northern riposte to the Two Fat Ladies. What’s more, their two fat lads were refreshing fare in the age of telegenic cooks such as Nigella Lawson or angry chefs like Gordon Ramsay.
Spin-off shows followed, including The Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour of Britain (2009), The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best (2010), The Hairy Bikers’ Mississippi Adventure (2012) and The Hairy Bikers’ Asian Adventure (2014), along with allied cookbooks and a 2015 memoir, The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres.
What was the secret of their success? “We are mates, it’s not something that’s been manufactured,” said Myers. “We’re not snobby about food. We’re very happy with egg and chips, as long as it’s very good-quality eggs and good-quality potatoes. About 95% of good cooking is good shopping.”
They met by chance in a Newcastle pub in the 1990s when Myers was working there as makeup artist and prosthetics technician on an adaptation of Catherine Cookson’s The Gambling Man starring Robson Green. King, an assistant director on the project, was at the bar ordering a curry. The barman told King that if he ordered two curries he would qualify for a special offer: four poppadoms instead of one. “I just stepped up and said, ‘I’ll have the other curry’,” Myers said.
The pair cemented their friendship with road trips up the west coast of Scotland, travelling with a pan, a single-burner stove, some butter, a lemon and some brown bread. “We’d go up round Loch Assynt, up by Lochinver, and catch wild brown trout.” The idea for the television series was born from these trips.
But, while the Hairy Bikers became celebrated and their cookbooks successful, some worried that their recipes were unhealthy. Their banana French toast recipe, consisting of brioche, bananas, peanut butter and cream, was ominously dedicated to Elvis Presley. One critic suggested that their full-English shakshuka, featuring sausages, lardons and black pudding, “looks as if it should come with a diagram on how to administer CPR”.
Indeed, as their fame expanded, so did their waistbands. By 2012, Myers recalled, he was taking tablets for high blood pressure and to lower his cholesterol, and both he and King were diagnosed as being morbidly obese during a medical. He weighed 17st 12lb, with a 49in waist, while King weighed in at 19st 6lb, with a 50in waistline. “I was prediabetic; human foie gras, basically,” Myers said.
The diagnoses pushed them to make the series The Hairy Dieters: How to Love Food and Lose Weight. Both men lost 3st 7lb during filming and published their most successful series of books afterwards under the general title Hairy Dieters. “Doing it publicly was the thing that encouraged us to make it work. People admired the honesty. We sold about 1.3m copies of our first book. We learned an awful lot from it.”
The following year, 2013, Myers appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, performing a “Tartan tango” to the tune of The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) with his dance partner, Karen Hauer, and becoming, in the words of the show’s judge Len Goodman, “the people’s champion”, winning the weekly popular vote despite sometimes low marks from judges and armchair critics deriding his “ungainly boogying”. He didn’t win, but the Hairy Biker received the longest standing ovation for, fittingly enough, a Meat Loaf-themed paso doble.
Myers, the only child of Jim and Margaret, was born in Barrow-in-Furness ( then in Lancashire but now in Cumbria) and attended the town’s grammar school for boys, where an inspirational teacher, Mr Eaton, encouraged him to develop his artistic skills. He took a fine art degree at Goldsmiths, University of London and a master’s degree in art history.
His first job was as a trainee makeup artist at the BBC. He worked there for 23 years, including a stint on Top of the Pops, before the Hairy Bikers got together. While filming the show in Romania, Myers met Liliana Orzac. “In our hotel there was a striking woman on reception. Nudging Si, I whispered: ‘I fancy her!’” They married in 2011.
In 2022, Myers announced on the podcast Hairy Bikers – Agony Uncles that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He and King made a moving return to the screen in The Hairy Bikers: Coming Home for Christmas in December 2023, in which they discussed his illness and treatment; and had filmed a new series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which is currently screening on BBC Two, and which King described as “a celebration of a joyous and creative friendship”.
Myers is survived by Liliana and her children, Iza and Sergiu.

A Grand Day Out in Castro Valley
Monday, 2 September 2024
Well, what was supposed to a 15 mile bike ride to investigate the route from home to the campground in Anthony Chabot Regional Park and back didn't work quite as planned. The main reason for this trip was to determine if this campground really is in biking distance from home. And, yes: this was inspired by Laid-Back Camp.
I left home at 7:16am with water and food for the ride, but before long, I realized I would not be able to ride the whole way. My ebike's battery wasn't at full charge and I wanted some power left for the final hill on the return ride home. At about 2.5 miles in, I had to get off and hike the bike. But at the top of that dreadful hill, I saw I had a good downhill run from there.
But after only about a mile of gravity-assisted downhill, the road was closed. Gargle Maps didn't mention this, instead saying the road near home was closed, even though that was in fact open. Heck.
Tumblr media
Image Description: A photo of a light blue ebike on a roadside in front of signs indicating the road is closed and bikes are not permitted to go any further.
So, I turned around near the Redwood Canyon Golf Course, hiked uphill the other way, and then rode to the Castro Valley Community Park. There I finished a water bottle, had a snack, and just rested for a bit.
Tumblr media
Image Description: A photo of a light blue ebike in front of the Castro Valley Community Center at Castro Valley Community Park.
Then, it was back on the bike for the ride home. All told it was 10 miles in just under 2 hours.
But also, I have a better idea of this bike's limits and my abilities. Next time: start with a full charge!

Tumblr media
Motorbike insurance in the UAE is essential for protecting riders and their bikes from financial loss due to accidents, theft, or third-party liability. Just like car insurance, motorbike policies come in various types—third-party and comprehensive. Third-party insurance covers damages or injuries caused to others, while comprehensive insurance includes protection for your own bike, personal injury, and theft. Leading providers like RSA, AXA, and Orient offer specialized motorbike insurance plans with flexible premiums and optional add-ons such as roadside assistance and breakdown cover. Riders can now purchase or renew policies online through quick and hassle-free portals, with instant quotes and digital policy documents.
It's important to choose a plan based on factors like bike value, usage frequency, and coverage needs. Some insurers also offer discounts for experienced riders, safety gear, and secure parking. With the increasing popularity of motorcycles for both commuting and recreation in the UAE, having the right insurance ensures peace of mind on every ride. Comprehensive motorbike insurance not only meets legal requirements but also safeguards your investment, providing financial support in case of unforeseen incidents. Whether you're a daily commuter or a weekend rider, protecting your bike with the right insurance is a smart and necessary step.
