EARLY VOTING in Mariupol began on March 10th, courtesy of armed election brigades who criss-crossed the city in search of participants. Sometimes, mobile ballot boxes were unveiled to the sounds of rousing hits such as Sergei Voitenko’s “My Russia” (Russia! Russia! My Russia! / Great country! Motherland!). Other times, guns did the talking. Those preferring to wait until the official start had a harder job. The locations of polling booths were not advertised ahead of the vote—a provision, officials explained, designed to ensure the safety of organisers. By the time polls closed on the evening of March 15th, the first of the three official ballot days, a stratospheric 69% of the region had already voted. This was all the more remarkable given the absence of accurate voting lists to calculate the number from.
The vote in Mariupol could be written off as a farce, were it not for everything that went before it. The second day of voting came exactly two years after Russian planes dropped bombs on the city’s main theatre while a large number of children were taking shelter inside, killing hundreds of them. Local authorities estimate that at least 22,000 civilians were killed in the city during weeks of bombardment. It may be considerably more. Only 120,000 of a pre-war population of 450,000 remain in Mariupol, plus a similar number of new migrants from Russia and central Asia.
Local sources, whose identities we are withholding for their protection, report that Mariupol has been unusually deserted over the days of the vote. The city still bears obvious war scars, they say. Central streets alternate between ruins and, where houses have been cleared, empty pits. Only collaborators who have proven their worth to the occupying Russian forces have been given homes in the few new-builds, hastily constructed for the cameras on the edge of the city. Access to the city is still tightly controlled, with checkpoints on the roads in and out. Anyone wanting to enter has to get permission at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, 1,000 km away.
The Kremlin has been nonetheless keen for Mariupol to display loyalty. One of the very first acts of the occupying forces—even before the theatre was filled in with concrete in an attempt to contain the stench of rotting corpses—was to wheel in massive video screens showing Vladimir Putin. “They hadn’t even opened the shops or the market, or the hospitals, but they had the big propaganda screens,” one local said. In the run-up to the presidential elections, there was a campaign to encourage locals to take up Russian passports. Its lack of success was perhaps most clearly shown in the decision in December 2023 to allow people to vote using their Ukrainian IDs, a rare example of a state allowing nationals of another one to take part in a presidential election. It is one of many avenues for voting fraud, suggests Mariupol’s elected mayor Vadym Boychenko, now based in Ukrainian-controlled Dnipro.
Solomiia Bobrovska, a member of Ukraine’s parliamentary intelligence committee closely connected to resistance movements, says that Mariupol remains a partisan hotbed. “That’s why they are so strict about the city. They don’t trust locals with anything important.”
The resistance effort can broadly be split between military and civilian wings. Partisan and diversionary activity in the former category is overseen by agencies like the SSO, Ukraine’s special forces, and HUR, its military intelligence agency. The SBU, the domestic intelligence outift, leads on civilian resistance.
Alongside this are other more independent activist groups, like Yellow Ribbon, which says it has 15,000 activists across Ukraine’s occupied territories. The resistance is mostly low-level: printing anti-Putin posters and organising underground Ukrainian flag production. Its social-media channel offers suggestions about how to avoid voting and share information about election organisers with prosecutors. “It’s about giving people support, to show they are not alone,” says “Alex”, a co-founder of the movement. “Our aim is to irritate the hell out of the Kremlin.”
Civil and military representatives are hesitant to discuss the extent of their networks, but it’s clear that their work has become much more difficult since the early days of the war. Many agents have been compromised, hauled off to prison in the best case scenarios. Russia has dispatched tens of thousands of security officers to the occupied territories. Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, also in exile, admits the resistance was “losing too many people,” and suggests Ukraine should become more careful. He suggests encouraging locals to vote unless it was safe not to do so; a boycott was unlikely to change anything and could attract dangerous attention, he says. “The Mariupol resistance is different to everywhere else given our history and the level of control. At this stage we need to think about keeping people alive. They are our stake.”
The Ukrainian government, perhaps surprisingly, has not produced a unified position on what its citizens should do: take part in the electoral farce to avoid reprisals, or ignore it. That is partly down to disagreement inside the corridors of power. But it is really because officials find it hard to admit that the liberation of Mariupol now looks remote. For Mr Boychenko, the exiled mayor, who has been criticised for his decision to leave his city in the early days of the war, the focus should be on helping the 200,000 or so survivors now scattered across Ukraine. “We are an evacuated city, a people in exile. But we haven’t disappeared.”

The Ultimate Guide to Classic Land Rover Defenders for Sale: What to Look For
If you're a fan of rugged, off-road vehicles, the classic Land Rover Defender is likely at the top of your list. Renowned for its durability and iconic design, the Defender has captured the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide. Whether you're in the market for a classic Land Rover Defender as a collector's item or an off-road adventure vehicle, this guide will help you navigate the process of buying one. Here’s what you need to know to ensure you find the best classic Defender for sale.
Understanding the Classic Land Rover Defender
Before diving into the specifics of what to look for, it’s essential to understand the classic Land Rover Defender’s legacy. Produced between 1983 and 2016, the Defender is celebrated for its robust construction and versatility. The classic models, especially those from the 1980s and 1990s, are highly sought after due to their vintage charm and less complex technology compared to modern vehicles.
1. Check the Vehicle’s History
One of the first things to do when considering a classic Land Rover Defender is to check its history. Request a comprehensive service history report to ensure the vehicle has been well-maintained. Look for any records of significant repairs or restorations, as these can impact the vehicle's value and reliability. If possible, obtain a Carfax or similar report to verify mileage and ownership history.
2. Inspect the Bodywork and Chassis
The Defender’s body and chassis are critical to its durability and performance. Classic Land Rover Defenders are prone to rust, especially in areas like the bulkhead, chassis rails, and wheel arches. Examine the vehicle thoroughly for any signs of corrosion or repair. Pay close attention to the condition of the frame; a rusted or damaged chassis can be expensive to repair and affect the vehicle’s overall safety.
3. Evaluate the Engine and Transmission
The engine is the heart of any vehicle, and classic Land Rover Defenders are no exception. Most classic models come with a 2.5-liter diesel engine, though variations exist. Start by assessing the engine’s performance—listen for unusual noises and check for leaks or smoke. Ensure the engine runs smoothly and responds well to acceleration.
The transmission should also be in good working condition. Test the gear changes to ensure they are smooth and free from grinding. Manual transmissions are standard in classic Defenders, so make sure the clutch operates correctly and the gearbox is responsive.
4. Examine the Interior Condition
The interior of a classic Land Rover Defender should reflect its overall care. Inspect the seats, dashboard, and controls for signs of wear and tear. Look for any modifications or aftermarket parts that may affect the vehicle’s originality and value. A well-preserved interior not only enhances comfort but also maintains the vehicle’s classic appeal.
5. Check for Authenticity and Modifications
Authenticity is crucial for classic Land Rover Defenders. Ensure that the vehicle retains its original parts and configurations, as significant modifications can impact its value. While some modifications, such as upgraded suspension or modern electronics, can enhance performance, they should be documented and preferably reversible. If the Defender has been extensively modified, ensure these changes align with your needs and preferences.
6. Review the Vehicle’s Documentation
Documentation is key when buying classic Land Rover Defenders for sale. Verify that the vehicle has a clean title and that all paperwork is in order. This includes registration, insurance, and any historical documentation of past ownership or significant work done. A well-documented vehicle provides peace of mind and facilitates a smoother transaction.
7. Assess the Price and Market Trends
Pricing for classic Land Rover Defenders can vary widely based on factors such as model year, condition, and rarity. Research current market trends to ensure you are paying a fair price. Compare prices of similar models and consider factors like mileage, condition, and originality. Keep in mind that while some Defenders may come with a premium price tag, their value often appreciates over time.
8. Consider a Professional Inspection
Given the complexity and potential hidden issues with classic vehicles, it’s wise to invest in a professional inspection. A qualified mechanic or classic car specialist can provide a detailed assessment of the Defender’s condition, identifying any issues that may not be immediately visible. This step can save you from costly repairs and provide additional negotiation leverage.
9. Test Drive the Vehicle
A test drive is essential to understanding how a classic Land Rover Defender performs on the road. Pay attention to the vehicle’s handling, braking, and overall driving experience. Test it under various conditions to gauge its reliability and ensure it meets your expectations. A well-performing Defender should offer a smooth and responsive drive.
10. Join Land Rover Enthusiast Communities
Connecting with Land Rover enthusiast communities can provide valuable insights and recommendations. Online forums, social media groups, and local clubs can offer advice on reputable sellers and help you find well-maintained classic Defenders. Engaging with fellow enthusiasts can also offer support and enhance your buying experience.
Conclusion: Buying classic Land Rover Defenders for sale is an exciting journey that requires careful consideration and due diligence. By following these guidelines, you can ensure you find a well-maintained, authentic, and reliable Defender that suits your needs. Whether you’re drawn to its rugged charm or its off-road capabilities, a classic Land Rover Defender is a timeless investment that can provide years of driving pleasure. Happy hunting!

I was making a list of Weird Places in Amity Park in Darcy Lewis' Adventures in Dating Dracula, and one of my Discord buddies told me you might like to see it.
Lost Horse Road- Nobody lives on Lost Horse Road. The buildings there are all abandoned. Even before the Fenton portal was activated, it was an extremely liminal place. Traveling Lost Horse Road is a very bad idea; lucky people are transported to a random location nearby- maybe back at home, or in front of the mall. The unlucky lose their minds instead.
Lost Horse Road has been active since at least 1850, but there have been reports even earlier of this phenomenon from settlers and natives of the area.
Whispering Heights- technically called Willow Heights due to being near a cliff covered in willow trees, Whispering Heights is another liminal area. The Old Amity Park Church functioned as a meeting place for church, local events, the market, and was even the location of the schoolhouse.
Exact dates vary, but during a nasty winter, the town was buried in a blizzard. Many of the townsfolk came to the church for warmth and safety, but the old roof collapsed, burying at least 200 people alive. It's said since then, especially at night, one can hear the whispers of their shades.
Many have gone looking for the true source. None come back. The location was purchased and developed by a real estate group out of town. Since no one from Amity Park stayed longer than a few weeks, the location was abandoned. It was since purchased by locals who bricked up all windows pointing to the cliffs, and rarely has vacancies.
Bald Hill House- the location of a major story arc, Bald Hill House has long been haunted. The proprietor was rumored to have made a deal with the devil (or fae, or ghosts depending on the teller), offering human sacrifices in exchange for wealth and power. After his death, every plant from moss on a stone to trees on Bald Hill died.
No one knows what happened a few days before Halloween of 1990, but the Bald Hill House collapsed, and plant life quickly took over the area.
Fentonworks- a relatively new liminal area, no one knows exactly what went on in the basement there; just that it caused a newcomer to take custody of both the Fentons' children. However, it is a particularly haunted area. Unlike most liminal places, unless one is unlucky, it's a relatively safe place.
The Autumn House- built in 1968, the Autumn House is rumored to have belonged to a coven of witches. It's now haunted by several ghosts, most notably the ghosts of two children and the Wisconsin Ghost. It's another fairly safe area; none of the ghosts there are known for picking unnecessary fights, and if you're particularly lucky, you might be able to have a chat with a friendly ghost.
Crybaby Creek- another major location. Legends from local tribes about this place date back centuries, or possibly even thousands of years. Locals take them seriously, and have even installed barbed wire fencing with signs warning people about the area. Cops take turns driving by at night to look for stray headlights.

Even if this was an act, the Reploid before X and Zero appeared genuinely, visibly shaken by the sudden Mechaniloid attack to the market district in this port. But as he had heard of berserk machinery cases, he was better armed with knowledge and preparation for such events-- After all, his delivery service job wasn't always a walk in the park. There had been Mavericks who tried to target him before, and it was a good thing he was built for heavy duty tasks, as well as basic defense in emergencies. A technical self-first aid shouldn't hurt.
For the other red Reploid to look skeptical though earned a teensy bit, barely noticeable gaze of judgment by this Reploid-- In fact, he wondered if Zero had ever seen heavy-duty Reploids for civilian services before (albeit such a case likely being rare), though the currently disguised Dark Lord of Hell wouldn't fault that much alert. He does, to extent, inspire fear, after all.
The blue-armored robot, however... He could tell that he was the most sensitive of all these robots. Perhaps he would be the kind to easily be able to defuse conflicts, if those involved would cooperate.
"That Mechaniloid came from the direction of this road." The Reploid whom had yet to share his name to the two Maverick Hunters pointed at the damaged road ahead, with some debris from destroyed market equipment. Some unlucky merchants and workers here suffered losses, and would require every aid possible to restore their premises-- Not to mention insurance coverage. "I was parking my delivery truck here when the attack took place, and many here scrambled to safety in buildings nearest to them, like I did. I led other civilians nearby for cover before I called to report the incident to Hunter HQ."
The Reploid, then, showed the aforementioned delivery truck that was flipped. It would have been devastating if the parts of this truck containing fuel was instead destroyed, which would cause explosions and fire to the nearest vicinity. "And there went the supplies... My boss would be scratching his head at this."
"Hey, Rhagon!" One of the shop staff working where this Reploid was making his delivery rounds called to him. "Can you come here and help with clearing up rubble?"
"Hold on, I'm answering some questions from the Hunters! I'll be there when I'm done." Rhagon responded before looking back to X with a smile. "Those are some of my clients. I deliver supplies to their premises often, be it food products or shop equipment."
"Is there anything you require of me before I go help the others? I would have made more delivery rounds if this hot mess didn't happen."
#Welcome (IC)#Stand your ground (RP)#Ruler of Hell (Davoth)#moonlightsdew#(davoth @ zero for those few split seconds of looking at him: the fuck you lookin' at)#(if only davoth is NOT such an asshole while not disguised or when he gets found out)#(man's currently blending in and spying on robots in case the need to cause chaos is needed lmao)#(man i MISS being able to play even one MMX game)#(i got a physical copy of mmx8)#(only to then lose one of the two installation disks :C)

Beth finds the cameras
No ask I'm just mean. set 3x1
Beth sat cross legged on her bed, one hand absently pulling at her blanket where the fabric was starting to pill. Chuck had been combing through files for hours, but she could hardly fault that. The Gambler was his nemesis, after all. And he was back in Blue Valley, clearly trying to pull something. Chuck had been certain of it, and Beth had to admit the logic was sound. Courtney seemed to think he might have been telling the truth, about wanting to turn over a new leaf, but that was who she was. Beth admired and envied Courtney that, always able to see the best in people. Beth tried, she really did, but after everything that had happened in the last year, with supervillains, and people actually trying to kill her and her friends? She needed data to back people up, not blind faith. Chuck had agreed before she even had to voice the concern. So they’d spent the last few hours pouring over every scrap they could find, Chuck doing most of the work while Beth finished her math homework. Thus far, they’d uncovered nothing but emptied bank accounts, scam sites left unchecked for weeks, phishing emails still in drafts. “Not even a fraudulent facebook market scheme,” Chuck reported, sounding as close to a lament as an AI could get.
“Maybe he was telling the truth,” Beth mused. “Or he could be building up to something.” “You’d think he'd at least want his money back,” Chuck agreed. “Don’t worry, the accounts are safe.” Beth nodded, unnecessarily. She’d kept only a small portion of the Gambler’s stolen fortune last fall, set aside for college funds for the team. Investing in their future was a very good cause. She clicked through another set of tabs, frowning. There had to be a reason Gambler was back. He could have apologized from Aruba, or Scotland, or Markovia, if that was all he’d wanted to do. “Oh, can you check the Zarrick collection?” she asked. “Maybe there’s something in there he’s after. Like how the Shade wanted to find the Black Diamond?” Of course the Shade hadn’t been trying to kill them, like the Gambler probably was. “Good call, Beth,” Chuck praised. “Hacking into the American Dream now.” “Huh,” Beth tilted her head, looking at something on Chuck’s display. “What’s that?” “Security camera feed. Must be new, it was not there the last time we hacked in.” “Really new,” Beth said, puzzled. “Dad hates when they put in cameras. He always complains and he hasn’t mentioned this yet. “Beth, it’s not just at the American Dream. Look,” Chuck flashed up a map of Blue Valley. Dozens of lights pinpricked around it. The school, the American Dream, the Pit Stop, Ripped City, the trailer park on the road to the woods… and just outside her house. Inside Courtney’s house. “Oh, no,” she whispered. “Oh, that’s bad. We gotta warn everyone.” She jammed her feet into shoes, even as Chuck worked on tracing the feeds, grumbling about the Gambler’s tech.
“JSA stuff,” she yelped at her mother’s raised eyebrow, slamming out the back door. There was a time and a place for closing a door quietly, and this was not either. She’d call Court, ask to meet her, but where? Where was safe?
“The Park,” Chuck flashed in bold green letters, displaying the map for her again. There were no camera pinpoints there. “Yeah, ok. Text the groupchat. Park, but don’t say anything out loud, and I’ll explain everything there.” She felt her phone buzz as Chuck did exactly that. Everyone needed to know, and fast, and without letting anyone who’d put Cameras in Courtney’s kitchen knowing that they knew.
She had to take a longer route, uncertain of how much the cameras in Ripped City or in other places on her map could pick up. She panted as she reached the soft grass of the park and the safety of the gazebo. She was really going to have to take Yolanda up on the offer of endurance training at some point. That would be safer than taking Artemis up on her offer.
She was relieved to see she wasn’t the first to arrive.
“Sylvester! I mean, Mr. Pemberton. Hi!” she lowered her voice “Did you bring the Staff? Is Courtney here?”
He held up his severely outdated phone. “No, sorry. It’s Courtney’s staff, she’s on her way. I was just in the area already. What’s wrong? It sounded urgent.” “Someone’s spying on us,” Beth said, lowering her voice even more. “ I found cameras.” “You found cameras? How--oh, the goggles. Right. Charles was right to leave them with you. Good work, Beth.” He beamed at her.
“Chuck did the hard work. We think we can trace them. But everyone has to know.” she said, serious. “So what’s our next move?”
“You just leave that to me,” Sylvester glanced over the top of her head towards the treeline, in the direction of Rick’s house. Beth turned, hoping to see Rick’s car. “Beth,” Chuck said in her ear, low and urgent, “watch--”
An avalanche of white fur burst through the flimsy gazebo roof, splintering it, before Chuck could finish a warning no one would ever hear.

as it turns out, the problem is majorly people swapping out the halogen headlights for aftermarket LED headlights -- which is apparently illegal, if it's a replaceable bulb. per ars technica, a spokesperson at the us nat'l highway traffic safety admin (NHTSA) stated that, "There are currently no LED headlamp replaceable bulbs that meet federal safety standards."
a bit of digging shows that there's a specific NHTSA regulation regarding vehicle lighting: FMVSS-108. i found a notice from the NHTSA posted just last december, regarding a petition from the soft lights foundation (non-profit group) about LED integral beam headlamps on select car models. a few key excerpts:
With respect to the Soft Lights Foundation's statement that “LED headlights and Daytime Running Lights are dangerous due to the excessive glare, non-uniform luminance, excessive peak luminance, and square wave flicker, putting public comfort, health and safety at risk,” NHTSA believes the current research supports that FMVSS No. 108 contains the appropriate requirements to address these areas. NHTSA agrees that glare can have a negative safety impact and believes FMVSS No. 108 addresses that issue. ... ...The most common types of headlamp systems are integral beam (S10.14) and replaceable bulb (S10.15, S11) systems. The standard does not mandate a light source type for integral beam headlamps, so, as we explained above, LED light sources are permitted in an integral beam headlamp,[8] provided that the headlamp complies with the performance requirements set out in FMVSS No. 108. LED light sources are not, however, permitted in a replaceable bulb headlamp.
there's a part just after that first excerpt that made me raise my eyebrows. the NHTSA goes on to say, "While LED integral beam headlamps can be made to have a smaller footprint compared to lamps that use halogen or high-intensity discharge (HID) light sources, which can be perceived to be more uncomfortable at closer distances, an agency report to Congress, “Nighttime Glare and Driving Performance,” stated that when viewed from more than approximately 100 feet, the size of a headlamp has little impact on discomfort and that no research has identified any impact of oncoming headlamp size on the visibility of the person experiencing glare."
the citation at the end of the quote goes to the study done by the NHTSA in 2007. in a 2008 report from just-auto titled "Global market review of automotive lighting – forecasts to 2013", jeremy stern writes, "Despite the advent and upward trajectories of newer headlamp technologies (Xenon, LED), the tungsten-halogen headlamp continues to dominate the global market." that is, at the time of the study, LED headlamps were still quite rare.
it's now 2023. it's been 15 years. i think it's time to repeat the study with newer cars.
eye doctors: please for fucks sake try to protect your eyes from blue light pls take breaks from screens pls wear these blue light filter glasses pls pls pls im fucking begging you
car manufacturers:
#text#long post#sorry to tack all this on#but my roommate said yesterday that these led headlights were illegal#so i felt the need to do more research and maybe get some vindication

Why Choosing a Used Car Can Save You Thousands: A Comprehensive Look
When it comes to buying a car, the debate between new and used vehicles is always a hot topic. However, more people are discovering the substantial benefits of purchasing used cars, especially in areas like Llandudno. This coastal gem in Wales offers a variety of options for those seeking affordable and reliable vehicles without the hefty price tag of new ones. Let's dive into why choosing used cars in Llandudno could be one of the best financial decisions you'll ever make.
1. The Cost Advantage
The most obvious benefit of buying a used car is the lower price. New vehicles lose a significant portion of their value the moment they’re driven off the lot—some estimates suggest depreciation can be as high as 20% in the first year alone. By purchasing a used car, you avoid this initial drop in value and can often find vehicles that are just a few years old at a fraction of their original cost.
In Llandudno, the used car market is thriving, offering a wide range of options to fit different budgets and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a compact city car or a spacious family vehicle, there’s likely a used car waiting for you that meets your needs.
2. Certified Quality and Reliability
Thanks to advancements in technology and manufacturing, cars today are built to last longer. Many vehicles on the used car market in Llandudno have low mileage and come with full-service histories, ensuring they’ve been well-maintained. Additionally, buyers have access to certified pre-owned programs, which often include warranties and thorough inspections to guarantee the car's reliability.
Even without a certification, many independent dealerships in Llandudno provide detailed vehicle history reports, allowing you to make an informed decision. This transparency gives you peace of mind when purchasing a used car.
3. More Features for Less Money
Buying a used car often allows you to afford higher-tier models or trims that would be out of reach when buying a new one. Want leather seats, advanced safety features, or a high-quality sound system? Opting for a used car can make these features more accessible without stretching your budget.
In Llandudno, the market for used cars frequently includes vehicles equipped with modern technology like touchscreen infotainment systems, backup cameras, and lane-assist systems. You can enjoy premium features while saving thousands of pounds.
4. Lower Insurance and Registration Costs
Another financial benefit of buying a used car is the reduced cost of insurance and registration. Insurance premiums are often lower for used vehicles because their market value is less than that of new cars. Similarly, registration fees, which are often based on a vehicle's price or age, are generally more affordable for used cars.
For residents of Llandudno, where insurance premiums can vary widely, opting for a used car could mean significant savings over time. These ongoing cost reductions contribute to the overall affordability of owning a used vehicle.
5. Sustainable Choice
Choosing a used car isn’t just good for your wallet—it’s also a more environmentally friendly choice. Manufacturing new cars requires substantial resources and energy, leading to a significant carbon footprint. By purchasing a used car in Llandudno, you’re reducing demand for new car production and promoting sustainability.
Additionally, many used cars on the market today meet modern emissions standards, making them an eco-friendly choice even years after their initial production.
6. Wide Selection in Llandudno
The used car market in Llandudno is incredibly diverse, with options ranging from fuel-efficient city cars to rugged SUVs. This variety ensures that buyers can find a car that suits their specific needs, whether for daily commutes, weekend getaways, or family road trips.
Local dealerships and private sellers in Llandudno provide a steady supply of quality used cars, giving buyers the flexibility to shop around and compare options. With so many vehicles to choose from, you’re sure to find one that fits your lifestyle and budget.
7. Tips for Buying a Used Car in Llandudno
