Collective memory and isolation:
Humans aren't built to hold all their stories within themselves. This due to our social nature, instead we are built to remember things via a collective memory. A downside of this, is humans have a tendency to forget huge glaring chunks of information in the proccess, as well as re-write certain events on a collective scale.
An example being how we forgot how to make Roman Concrete until very recently due to 2 key ingredients being missing. They weren't ever written down because it was sooo obvious that they never thought it would need to be clarified, the missing information being Salt water rather then purified water (which?? They where by the ocean and only had drinking water from v spesfic parts why waste it on construction??) and Lye (which is just everywhere!) Adding these 2 things makes a concrete that basically self repaires and lasts centuries while not absorbing heat as much as modern ones.
One day, I imagine a world where all our baking recipies will have the same effect as we never spesify "Chicken" eggs because what other eggs would we be using? Imagine when chickens are no longer the universal egg source will our recipies too fail?
None of us have ever experienced the original set of Community as it was known prior to the Nuclear Family set up. And yet, humans for 99% of their existence have been hunter gathers, only within the last few thousand years have we been able to travel down roads, only the last hundred have we had mass machines.
This is all a very long way of saying, the thing recently lost from collective memory is Community but it's not gone forever it's just HARDER to do because your recreating it from basically square one. All community these days seems to be manufactured rather then an organic settling of a system yet another false shiny thing attempting to replace something innate to us all. This is because people are still creating spaces to exist even though currently the envrioment is doing everything in its power to isolate us
It isnt my fault or your fault that this re-creation and re-story-aition of community and family is so difficult. But it also isn't our elders who where the last ones to remember the last wave of shrinking of community. It is entirely the fault of Ruling classes obession with isolation both physical and emotional, that we should instead focus on our own indivual stories via social media creating a Story of ourselves but speaking to no one. That we should make all our hobbies profitable, that if we are seen we must be productive or profitable in order to justify existing.
Currently these Ruling Systems put in allll this work to ensure we need the Ruling Class for survival, all to ensure their elite status within those systems. Currently they have it, we cannot feed ourselves, build housing, even access drinking water or heat without the permission from this ruling class.
And yet, the memory of community exists despite everything our bodies ache for stories and community.
Our bodies remember community just like our bodies remember having tails, it's been apart of us for so long of our evolution it isn't able to be entirely separated from us. Sure community might now an atrophied muscle which we are all struggling to use again but it's there and it can be used, it'll just hurt the first dozen or so times you use it and build the strength back up.
But one day it won't be difficult at all, it'll become as automatic as breathing.

Villain: The Gleebringer Battalions
Gallard Gleebringer only ever wanted to make people happy. By using his skills as a toymaker and inventor he sought to fill the world with devices that would bring wonder, and save people from the drudgery of labour to give them more time for play.
Seeking to save his neighbours from the horrors of war, and under the patronage of the battlehungry local margrave, Gallard has a constructed an autonomous army of toy soldiers that in some weeks time will go berserk and begin rampaging across the land, playing out an inexplicable war-game that will leave villages sacked and the entire region destabilized.
It’s up to the party to notice the looming crisis and do something about it before the toys begin their march, As the powers that be are not only blind to any fault in their shiny new war machines but actively willing to imprison the party for jeopardizing "the defence of the realm" .
Adventure Hooks:
Scraping together enough coin to fund a construct army has left the margrave’s treasury more than a little tight pursed, leading them to skimp on things like repairing infrastructure, public festivals, and resupplying their garrisons. There’s plenty of opportunities for adventurers as bandits and monsters propagate through the wilderness, and the lesser nobles rely on mercenaries to guard their holdings. Its only so long before the cracks begin to show however, as roads wash out and the realms defenders turn to brigandry. 
The party end up in a tavern drinking with an old military officer previously employed by the margrave. She’s iresome and illtempered, but she’ll crawl out of her cups long enough to tell the tale of how after twenty years of loyal service she was let go for protesting when some of the troops under her command were killed in a training exercise.  If the party press a little she might just let it slip that it wasn’t training so much as a field test of Gleebringer’s machines, which her boss insisted be against real troops. Later on, they’ll find an official bounty posted for the woman, who’s rallied some of her fellow discontented soldiers and started on a campaign of sabotage. 
For his part Gleebringer is quite blind to the looming threat, having been carried by his ever shifting attention to yet another new project once the design and manufacture of the armies were complete. The party might get a chance to talk to him however if they manage to sneak into the excursive exposition he's hosting in the province's capital, either by riding in on the coattails of a wealthy patron, or by sneaking in among the serving staff. Actually getting an audience with the toymaker will be even more difficult as the margrave has set his agents to watch and protect Gleebringer, and it's only so long before they notice the uninvited guest have crashed the private function.
Setup: While many gnomes dabble in artifice, it was early in his apprenticeship with the village toymaker that a young Gallard discovered both his love and prodigious talent for the technical arts. It wasn't just a magical knack, it was an eye for detail that had people saying that the gnome's creations seemed to be alive long before he figured out how to make them move on their own.
Soon Gleebringer toys were in demand across kingdoms, and Gallard found himself not only patronized by innumerable wealthy merchants and nobles but sought out by engineers and craftsfolk of all kinds who realized the genius packed away in his creations.
Gallard didn't let the fame or the fortune go to his head, instead using his growing connections and commission budget to experiment with even more complex designs. For example: scaling up from music boxes to clockwork bands, and eventually an automated opera house.
As a man who dreamed all his life of building a flying town, it was safe to assume that Gallard had his head in the clouds. He hated to see people suffer but seldom thought through the implications of his inventions, Such as when an automated lumber mill intended to supply materials for his projects put an entire town of foresters out of work. This penchant for distraction was only encouraged by the margrave, who saw the military applications of Gleebringer's gifts from the moment a clockwork dragon bought for one of his children ended up badly maiming one of the servants who saught to tidy up the toyblock castle it had been charged with guarding.
Over the past ten years, the Margrave has become Gallard's most generous patron, supplying him with workshops ( staffed by apprentaces who's loyalty can be counted on) and an endless series of new projects ( which always end up increasing the margrave's power and standing at the cost of the common good).

I wonder what the minimum number of people would be to have a modern standard of living.
Just a thinky diatribe. Keep scrolling, it's fine.
We have technology, tools and automation that are labor saving devices and methods to do more, faster, with less, for cheaper. Things that would've taken centuries to do by hand without extra people to help, now able to be done by one person with a machine, be it stationary at a factory or a vehicle one rides.
No matter what, one could always use more manpower for any given situation, but manpower brings with it an inherent humanity, which means they are not disposable, they have their own needs and life and ambitions and life. That is the double edged sword of having a population that needs more of itself to function. That contributes to overpopulation and widespread distribution of that population, which leads to desperate competition for scarce resources.
Making it possible and even preferable for someone to have fewer children to see them as resources for retirement or luxurious life means that those that actually want to raise children for the sake of raising children, produce and raise more children, actually giving a shit to give them a loving and nurturing home. Fewer desperate, possibly psychotic people running around threatening to extort random passerbys in the street.
But suppose you could accomplish with a small, very micronized version of what used to require a manufacturing plant with ancient assed technology requiring thousands or even just hundreds of people, it could be done by a few dozen, regionally.
Previously, a large workforce was a necessity in order to be able to produce more objects to sell to other people. Objects which required time and resources and professional skill for quality and performance, based on industry standards and needs. That meant skilled labor in large quantitites was a necessity, that meant the value was high. That meant a large population for it was attractive, which could provide cheaper things for a population, which meant for the people currently alive, it was cheaper to acquire and possess with less scarcity for a comfortable and secure life.
But what if you needed progressively fewer and fewer people to do the same tasks? That'd mean more of those same people could also do more things, even different things, throughout the day. Not to the point where one dude is operating 20 different consoles to be a chef, a miner, a construction worker and maintain security at a nuclear power plant, but 1-2 different tasks, perhaps. This would mean higher profits for people to pay fewer workers, but it would also mean the workers they keep on board would be higher paid, and there'd be more opportunity for business. Even business of the same kinds, competing. Even if the quality of, say, specific steel lugnuts varied a micron's worth; some preferring the brand name, some preferring the miniscule difference in quality, some preferring the cent difference cheaper, despite performance standards and guarantees making them practically the same.
But suppose you possessed a healthy workforce to be able to handle even the estimated needs of a sudden influx of population in the event of a shitstorm; 3-4 people to account for shift differences, waves of illness incapacitating large numbers at a time. Some good faith automation to handle phone lines and similar services.
We're going to assume that this supposed era, machines are cheaper, and comprised of materials that are easier to recycle or maintain and do not pollute at end of cycle, enabling one person to do more tasks, with less effort. Mowing lawns, paving roads, working on telecom lines and utility poles.
All the things we need other people to manage or labor for, a fraction would be necessary. Even for maintaining and fixing those machines. And in turn, those machines and systems would be better in all respects than the methods we use now to acquire those resources or produces those necessary products. And yet, acquiring a job would be easy, because even essential people whom are very valuable could always use some security in the event they're incapacitated and can't serve as the primary provider. Meet the performance standards and be able to operate, you're worth that security stippend. The meaning of skeleton crews kind of changing, given the different needs of a business that truncates what used to be a hundred people, to about ten.
The ultimate objective, of course, being to have an economic system where the government does not subsidize any form of business. Specifically so said business has to sink or swim on its own merits, not by simply performing the sole, monopolizing essential service because they're the only ones with the finances to create or maintain the machines or refine or create the resources. If anyone can do it, for cheap, then the value of that essential produce, good or service, drops to a reasonable sum, and it becomes just another unique necessity we can't live without, but doesn't deserve to be worth more than gold per ounce.
Where a business, even working within the minimum standards and benchmarks for environmental safety and from-pallet-to-waste-bin cycle management of good to waste, turns a very high ratio of profit, based purely on the value of the good, service or product, not based on how much the government will pay you to subsidize the thing at the cost to taxpayers to ensure the thing continues to exist. Thereby resulting in greater trade and business in the economy as different companies exchange services and trade goods and servies to make those products accessible and affordable. All of it based on the ease of exploitation of natural resources, all of that based on the efficiency of the processes we use where science and technology meet.
So ultimately we could have internet (phone, radio etc), cars, medicine, medical devices, digital media, manufacturing of textiles, agriculture, roads, construction, power, quality inspection, safety, waste management and disposal, you name it. Just, assisted by automation. The ultimate size of the population in order to meet every individual's needs, on the personal or larger scale, becomes a fraction. Any pressure to have children in order to sustain this system becomes minimal.
That means no shortages of things because people weren't there in order to fill the niches, and it also means those people that were deliberately born have a lucrative opportunity that would net them enough income, even for a lower end job, that'd allow them to afford just by virtue of the markets, essential medicine, medical services, internet, resources like water and food.
Or, if in this on paper thought experiment, it doesn't, we'd see where reality or our systems and methods still fall short and thought and engineering needs to be put into practice to make acquiring those resources or substitutes for them, cheaper and more effective.
I lack the macroscale knowledge or know-how to actually do anything with this thought experiment, but it's interesting to think about. The minimum size we'd need as a population to cover all standards of living we have now, IF we better utilized machines and internet to fulfill them.

Sounding out the naval barge on Seneca Lake

The next time you are driving along Seneca Lake, on State Route 414 along the eastern shore or – if you are traveling through Yates County – State Route 14 along the western shore, gaze into the middle of the lake and see if you find an interesting-looking platform floating on the surface. It shouldn’t be too hard to find, but you might wonder just what you are looking at.
This platform is, in fact, a barge anchored in the middle of Seneca Lake off the shore at Dresden. Indeed, the operation is officially known as the Seneca Lake Sonar Test Facility under the auspices of the Naval Sea Systems Command and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center of Newport, Rhode Island. Though it appears only civilian employees work there and no military personnel are stationed there, one could say this facility represents the only presence of the U.S. Navy existing in the Finger Lakes.
According to its website, the Seneca Lake Sonar Test Facility does just that – performing tests and evaluations of equipment to include sonar arrays and systems – and is known for its massive lift and power capabilities. Acoustic testing professionals carry out tests on systems and equipment of all sizes, even an entire sonar suite mounted in its sonar compartment.
Because it is a deep freshwater lake that is open all year, Seneca Lake is the Navy’s primary site for active instrumented calibration and testing. The fairly constant and predictable weather and water conditions of Seneca Lake also make it a choice testing site. It is known for its testing and evaluation of major projects that require relatively deep water with fixed underwater geometry and capabilities for heavy load-handling and electrical power.
Located about a mile and a half from the Dresden shore, the facility consists of two barges – the Systems Measurement Platform and the Remote Calibration Platform – that are the primary measurement and calibration resources. Two equipment-handling barges and numerous transport boats serve the facility, and there are machining and fabrication capabilities on the site to repair or manufacture the equipment and gear being tested.
The facility has been used by the Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, universities, foreign governments, state and local agencies, and private industry. And it has been a part of the Dresden landscape and lakeshore for more than 60 years.
It all began in November 1961, when the original barge – a converted oil tanker measuring 165 feet long and 36 feet long – arrived in Seneca Lake from Miami, via the inland waterway, Hudson River, and Barge Canal. During the heyday of the Cold War, as America furthered its research and development of anti-submarine warfare, the barge was purposed to test advanced sonar equipment designed to detect underwater craft. The barge was a key unit in establishing an anti-submarine acoustics research facility, headed by General Dynamics/Electronics.
The company leased a site at Dresden that provided 180 feet of lakefront – with construction of docking and service facilities to begin soon, according to an October 1961 newspaper article – along with a county road serving the property that would allow access to the facility throughout the year. Seneca Lake was chosen because its 600-foot depth makes it one of the deepest lakes in the country and – with the exception of the Great Lakes – the deepest lake with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. It also has temperature gradients similar to those in the Atlantic Ocean, meaning sonar tests could be correlated to ocean conditions. The waves on the lake aren’t high enough to interfere with barge operations, and since the lake rarely freezes tests can be conducted throughout the year.
The original barge was equipped with a diesel-driven, 200-kilowatt generator to supply electric power to its electronic equipment, a capacity that was later increased to 400 kilowatts. The barge’s hulls had several ballast tanks, with water pumped out of or into the tanks to raise or lower the height of the deck above water.
Initially, the barge was designed to test then-recently-developed transducers weighing as much as 35 tons. These transducers convert electrical energy into acoustic energy, sending sound signals through the water that bounce off an intended target with an echo that can be recorded and analyzed. For test operations, the barge was to be manned by three engineers working under the direction of a manager.
In 1965, the Navy began leasing the Dresden Marina – with 4.5 acres of land and 900 feet of lakefront – for $20,000 per year with an option to buy the marina for $125,000. As a result of this move, owners of boats and crafts docked at the marina were forced to remove them from the marina and find new facilities to store them. Those with mobile homes located on the hill above the docks also had to vacate the premises. Another result was the Navy expanding its research facilities on Seneca Lake through an investment of $500,000. The improvements included completely fencing in the installation since much of its research work dealing with sound and sonar equipment is classified.
An undated newspaper article – handwritten with “1967,” though the exact date is unclear – indicates the Navy bought the marina a couple of years later for $166,000 and took it over outright. That year, Albert Gatthardt, of the Washington Naval Research Center, spoke before a jointing meeting of the Seneca Falls and Waterloo Rotary Clubs and detailed the history of the Naval Research Laboratory and its recent developments and improvements.
Alternately known as the Seneca Underwater Test and Evaluation Center, the facility was profiled in a July 1968 newspaper article on the occasion of the barge’s conversion from diesel power generated aboard to being powered by an electrical cable from the shore. The change permitted the barge – referred to in the article as DARIUS, though it is unclear what that stands for – to test the largest underwater sonar sound sources.
The following year, the Navy announced a $2.2 million expansion of the research facility on Seneca Lake, making it “the newest, largest, and best underwater research center in the country.” Plans called for using the existing barges plus a new systems measurement platform measuring 195 feet long, 120 feet wide, and 9 and a half feet deep, with a crane capable of lifting 200 tons. The expansion would continue the Navy’s research into sound transmission, travel, and reception underwater, light transmission and reception, underwater radio communications, development of new oceanographic tools and techniques, and underwater tests in the field physics.
As of February 1969, the facility employed eight permanent employees – a number expanded by 10 or 20 visiting technicians, engineers, and scientists. With the expansion anticipated to finish in the summer of 1970, plans called for 15 permanent employees with a capacity for 40 people visiting and working on the site.
By September 1970, work on the expansion had fallen behind but was mostly complete, and the facility continued testing equipment on Seneca Lake. More than 50 years later, the Navy still has a presence in the Finger Lakes, and it is one you can see from the road or the shore.
