Direct and Custom Indexing Approaches
Financial professionals use indexing to compile a portfolio that mirrors the performance of a specific benchmark or market index. There are two primary forms of indexing: direct indexing and custom indexing. The best approach for indexing depends on several factors, such as flexibility.
Indexing differs from other strategies, where professionals pick companies they believe will outpace the market. Instead, they focus on investing a small portion of total allocations in many companies on an index, providing diversification and broad market exposure.
With direct indexing, financial professionals purchase stocks and securities to create a portfolio that is directly proportional to the actual index. The portfolio replicates the performance of the target index, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or S&P 500.
Direct indexing replaces traditional formal index funds. Brokerages developed them to overcome high transactional fees, seeking to diversify holdings cost-effectively. Rather than taking separate positions in the 500 companies on the S&P 500, with their associated transaction fees, investors invested in an S&P 500 index fund.
Transaction costs have declined, and advanced computer algorithms allow investors to own and organize positions directly across index stocks without investing in an intermediary fund. Therefore, directly owning the positions confers tax benefits since investors can harvest their losses. By contrast, investors can only harvest losses when their aggregate positions veer negative at the aggregate fund level. Frequent trading can optimize the capture of tax losses, given expected equity market volatility, and boost after-tax returns by as much as two percent.
Custom indexing differs from direct indexing, which exclusively mirrors existing published indexes. The investor still owns positions directly but according to individual criteria and parameters. For example, investors weigh a custom index toward a specific asset class or size of stock and underlying company. They can also incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) screens that ensure the index closely aligns with investor values. For example, investors can weigh a custom index toward renewables like wind and solar.
In addition, custom indexing tracks a specific index without employing the same index components, such as stocks. Through a custom indexing approach, the portfolio manager selects and combines a variety of bonds, equities, and other types of securities that deliver sought-after exposure to the index. Such a structure may provide tax benefits and further reduce transaction fees.
Flexibility in indexing is also important for creating exclusions at various levels. The approach makes sense for investors with significant exposure to an industry or specific stock with other investment accounts. Investors have holdings tied to specific industries. For example, some technology executives hold stock options linked to specific tech companies. In this situation, custom indexing allows investors to avoid specific company holdings or shift allocations toward other sectors while broadly following the target index.
Lastly, custom indexing enables factor-based investing approaches emphasizing stocks with specific traits, such as those with less earnings volatility or above or below-average price-to-earnings ratios. Multi-factor overlays may combine complex factors within index holdings, such as quality and value, and deliver a customized yet well-planned portfolio.

Engineer banned for 'incompetence' on the design of Vancouver Island highrise
A B.C. engineer has been banned from the profession after a highrise he designed was deemed unsafe. Its occupancy permit had to be revoked because it was so unsafe that its occupants couldn’t live there.
Engineers and Geoscientists B.C., the regulatory body for the professions, said Brian McClure admitted in a consent order that the structural design drawings for the 11-storey building were deficient. Engineers and Geoscientists BC says the building’s seismic design and gravity load resisting system didn't comply with building codes.
An independent review by the City of Langford identified several safety concerns.
The statement said McClure's registration with Engineers and Geoscientists B.C. has been cancelled, he's been fined $25,000, and he's agreed to pay $32,000 in legal costs.
If he does reapply for his licence, John McClure will have to meet more than half a dozen conditions. They include more training, positive references and a letter explaining why he wants his licence back.
The building has been renamed Ridgeview Place and has been granted a new address. Units are back on the rental market after the owner, Centurion Asset Management, announced in March that it was completing the structural systems upgrade on the highrise.

How Interest Rates Affect Stock and Bonds
Interest rate is the sum of money that a lender charges the borrower. It is a percentage of the principal amount that the borrower receives. Interest rates might have implications on investment options available to different individuals.
A rise in interest rates might make it difficult to access credit, affecting people’s ability to invest. For instance, when interest rates are raised, commercial and microfinance banks must increase their rates for commercial and consumer loans.
Increased rates on commercial loans might result in a decline in future cash flow for businesses, reducing the price of the company’s stock. When several businesses within the economy experience a decline in stock prices, stock ownership becomes less attractive.
Similarly, there is an inverse relationship between interest rates and bond sales. When interest rates increase, bond prices tend to fall because bonds involve a fixed interest rate. When interest rates fall, more people opt to purchase bonds, which hikes both the price and demand for bonds.

Benefits of Private Equity Investing
Private equity is a form of investment that involves investing in companies not publicly listed on the stock exchange. It might also involve supporting startups by providing them with funding at different stages of their operations. Private equity investing allows firms to acquire higher returns than those in the public stock market.
Private equity companies consist of high-net-worth individuals who pool funds to help startups to scale their businesses. They usually choose startups they believe have potential and give them a series of funding to help them grow with the intention that these startups make profits and yield returns.
Private equity investment comes with lower risk. Because private equity requires investing in companies that are not publicly listed, they are not subject to as many regulatory risks as publicly listed companies. Regulatory risks arise when a government regulation or law makes the business less attractive, reduces the prospect of growth, or significantly increases the operational cost of the business.
Investing in private equity often comes with tax incentives. For instance, the law permits investors to differ capital gains tax on the profits from private equity investment. This means that the private equity firm can accumulate its capital gains tax-free until full profit is received.
Furthermore, private equity firms usually tailor private equity deals in a manner that helps them mitigate tax obligations. The ultimate benefit of private equity investment is that it helps underperforming businesses grow while yielding returns for the investors.

Why Digitization Has Become Important for Asset Managers
Digitization has played an increasing role for asset managers in delivering excellent products and services to investors and clients. Before the digitization of asset management, asset managers wooed clients and investors with hospitality and plush offices. Today's investors and clients favor the convenience of technology over lavish displays of wealth.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are the tools creating the foundation for the digital infrastructure for asset management platforms. Data-driven technologies allow asset managers to make more informed decisions regarding risk management and asset utilization. Additionally, asset managers can use mobile apps and cloud-based to collaborate with team members to work on complicated projects.
These digital tools have made asset management more effective and efficient, especially in decision-making. Digital twins, for instance, make it possible for asset managers to make informed decisions by creating a virtual copy of assets or processes. Digital twin technology allows users to copy an object or a system to simulate and machine learning in real-time to help users make better decisions. In asset management, digital twins provide users with simulations of assets or processes similar to what might happen to create hypothetical scenarios and perform economic trade-off analysis.
Blockchain technology is an additional tool that simplifies managing assets. The smart contract allows asset managers to work with investors and clients on managing their assets borrowing from the blockchain ledger system. These contracts allow all involved parties to establish conditions for when actions should take place, for instance, fund allocation, profit distribution, and hiring employees. They are more efficient than traditional processes because they autonomously execute decisions when the contract's conditions are satisfied.
Digitization also helps asset managers and the systems they use remain organized. Before digitization, asset managers worked with uncoordinated platforms across multiple servers to perform their jobs. Cloud and IoT technologies have transformed into centralized platforms, such as enterprise asset management systems, computerized maintenance management systems, and enterprise resource planning systems.
Another advantage of digitized asset management platforms is that these systems allow managers to scale their business quickly as they take on more clients. Finally, asset management platforms also increase data processing power, allowing users to store more asset data. Furthermore, they are more accessible and mobile than non-digital asset management infrastructure because asset managers can use them from anywhere in the world with a connection to the internet and a device.
Securing the digital tools used in asset management is increasingly becoming important as these tools advance and more managers integrate these technologies with clients and investors. An increased emphasis on cybersecurity mandates advanced digitization to protect clients, investors, and managers against damage, theft, disruption, and information disclosure. Through corporate virtual private networks (VPN), asset managers strive to make their platforms have more data integrity, security, and system continuity. While advisers have taken steps and implemented safeguards to protect client information, there is no guarantee that these measures will be effective, particularly since the adviser often does not directly control the cybersecurity defenses or plans of its service providers, financial intermediaries and companies in which they do business.
By incorporating any of the abovementioned digital tools, asset managers and their clients benefit from a greater understanding of their assets and uses, allowing for making better decisions on how to use their assets. Parties involved with assets can quickly access information needed to make decisions regarding rearranging their portfolio. Digitization also positively impacts user ability to track assets from purchase to sale, which leads to more transparency.
