'The good people at the David Lean have devised a two-hour amble around Sanderstead and Riddlesdown to show off the locations that play a key part of one of the best recent British-made movies...
The David Lean Cinema crew are doing their utmost to bring films to life, and next month they are going on a special walking tour of the locations used in the making of Andrew Haigh’s acclaimed 2023 movie, All Of Us Strangers.
Haigh came to Croydon earlier this year to talk about the film, and Croydon’s role in it, which was recorded an Under The Flyover podcast. The David Lean Cinema will be screening All Of Us Strangers again next month (on Wednesday, September 11).
Now volunteers from the David Lean Cinema are offering a guided tour of the film’s locations, on Saturday September 14, from 1.45pm meeting at Riddlesdown Station.
“The tour will be stopping off at some of the main locations that were used for the filming of All of Us Strangers,” they say.
“The tour end point will be Sanderstead Station around 4pm.”
Places are limited, with only 20 spaces available.
Caitlin Clifford describes the film as “a beautiful ode to both family and home”.
Filmed in the summer of 2022, All Of Us Strangers features not only Haigh’s old home on Purley Downs Road, but other locations around Sanderstead, including the railway station, the Recreation Ground and the high street.
It also shows bona fide stars Scott, Foy and Bell leisurely making their way through the Whitgift Centre – a shot that received laughter and cheers from the Croydon audience during the April screening at the David Lean. The guided walk won’t be extending to a shopping trip in central Croydon, though...'

Section 5 of the London Loop
The London Outer Orbital Path, or LOOP, almost completely encircles Greater London. Nearly 150 miles are split into 24 mostly flat or gently sloping sections sections between Erith station (1) and Purfleet (24). The Loop combines beautiful open spaces like Hainault Forest Country Park and Bushy Park with historic buildings such as Hall Place and Black Jack's Lock & Mill.
Tumblr media
The 10.2km/6.4mile Section 5 is considered one of the most picturesque walks. Notable features you pass through include:
Riddlesdown chalk grassland, ancient woodland and forested paths with the chance to spot wildflowers, birds including nesting skylarks and butterflies (rare chalkhill blue butterfly). The quarry at the foot of Riddledown is approx 200 years old and was working until 1967. The impressive railway viaduct dates from 1884 when the line from East Grinstead to Oxted opened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kenley Common came into the City of London's care in 1874. The Royal Flying Corps was based at Kenley Airfield during WW1 and was an RAF base for Spitfires and Hurricanes in WW2.
The stunningly beautiful Happy Valley and Farthing Downs (SSSI) are home to one of Britain's rarest plants - the yellow rattle, so called because when the plant is ready to seed it dries out and rattles. Traces of human occupation dating back to the neolithic periods 12,000 years ago can still be found. Later occupants, Anglo-Saxon communities, used the Downs as a burial ground, creating large burial mounds, known as barrows, for their most important members. From Farthing Downs links to 21st Century London are also visible with views over to the Canary Wharf and the Shard on the horizon.

Why Does The City Of London Corporation Own Green Spaces Outside The Square Mile?
Photo: charleyk Ever noticed the City of London Corporation logo emblazoned on the signs at Hampstead Heath? It seems rather odd, given that Hampstead Heath is in the boroughs of Camden and Barnet, not the Square Mile. The City of London Corporation runs green spaces all over the capital, no matter how far outside its jurisdiction they are. Highgate Wood is in Haringey. Kenley Common is in Croydon. Spring Park is in Bromley. Epping Forrest is partly in Waltham Forest, but partly entirely outside of London. Burnham Breeches and Stoke Common are both miles outside of Greater London. Which brings us back to the question of why they are run by the City of London Corporation. Take a look for yourself at the seemingly random spread of green spaces that the Corporation owns on the map below: So we asked the City of London Corporation how this came to be. The response did little to enlighten us: We do this [run green spaces outside their parameters] because we believe the City of London Corporation has a responsibility to use its resources to protect green spaces for the public good in London and south east England. Why does the Corporation have any more responsibility over these spaces than their own local councils? This led us to doing some digging of our own. The first thing to note is that with each of these spaces, there's a different story as to how the City of London Corporation acquired it. Some of them were simply given to the Corporation, while others were actively procured. Epping Forest. Photo: kalpachev1 We start with Epping Forest in the Victorian era. Epping Forest was traditionally common land, but moves were made to enclose it. Between 1760 and 1870, roughly seven million acres of England countryside was enclosed. London boroughs and their respective councils weren't around at this time, so the City of London Corporation was the only body with the resources to save Epping Forest from privatisation. The City of London bought the forest to ensure that it would be open to all. In 1878, the Epping Forest Act was passed officially, establishing the City of London as conservators of Epping Forest. In 1882 Queen Victoria opened the forest officially declaring: It gives me the greatest satisfaction to dedicate this beautiful forest to the use and enjoyment of my people for all time. This is how it came to be known as 'the people's forest'. Some other cases have been rather more passive on the Corporation's part. Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson attempted to enclose Hampstead Heath, presenting 15 bills to Parliament on the matter. He failed, and after his death, his heir sold the Heath to the Metropolitan Board of Works. Hampstead Heath was then juggled around like a hot potato through a couple of bureaucratic bodies before ending up with the City of London. The City of London's coat of arms at Riddlesdown. Photo: Homemade If these spaces were acquired in a pre-borough era, then why hasn't the City of London returned them to their rightful boroughs now? Well, in many cases, those boroughs don't actually want them. As with so many things in life, money is at the core of the issue. The City of London has it and these local councils don't. It's this obstinate fact that has led to so many councils selling their souls to private land developers. They need cash, fast. Running a space the size of Hampstead Heath would drain Camden of funds, so the borough council would rather leave it in the hands of the City. The City of London spokesperson also told us that the Corporation invests over £29 million in its green spaces every year. Even if they're leaps and bounds away from the Square Mile, many of London (and beyond)'s green spaces would be in much rougher state without the City of London.

Near South Croydon CR2
History
Croydon started only as a small community of people around a church and a mill. It later transformed into a market town and an agriculture land. The development of railway systems further caused an improvement in the economy. People shifted from charcoal production to car manufacture to market retailing. In 1915, the Croydon airport was established and drew more interest in the town. However, wars damaged the area and residents suffered. Post-war Croydon led to massive development and establishment of high rise offices. Several businesses reopened and paved the way to industrialization. Today, Croydon has a strong sense of community spirit and it is the home of high end shopping centers.

TANA-B Hair Company
Many clients who go for a salon makeover are not just after the finish product they get. Although each client wants to look amazingly beautiful after the hair treatment, the amount and quality of service they receive also matters. Some salon owners fail to pay attention to these details. Customers want an hour or so of pampering. At Tana B Salon, you will feel that you are the most important client during your stay. The top-notch customer service, aesthetically designed spaces and high quality products used perfectly match their high caliber stylists. The moment you leave their salon, you see excellent results. You will feel relaxed and feel more beautiful to face the rest of your day.
The 'most dangerous' places in Croydon to live have been revealed
Croydon town centre has one of the highest reported number of crimes in all of London, according to the most recent crime statistics. September figures released by the Met show the number of reported crimes over the month was higher in Fairfield - the policing ward which covers the town centre - than all but ten policing areas in London. There were 2,487 crimes reported to police in Croydon in September, which breaks down to around 83 per day – or nearly four per hour. Read more here
Living in highly developed towns does not have all the perks. It may also predispose you to dangers and all sorts of crimes. The report of having an average of 4 crimes every hour in Fairfield is so alarming. Although some are considered petty crimes, this is definitely not the kind of environment in raising a family. Police visibility should be enhanced and local authorities must do aggressive steps to discourage criminals from causing trouble in town. Otherwise, the bad image of these identified most dangerous places could affect the overall economy of South Croydon. Investors may pull out their money and unemployment rate may increase.
War Memorial in South Croydon
The War Memorial in South Croydon is a must-see sight for both adults and kids. The monument was erected in 1921 by James Burford and Paul Montford. The statues seem to be simple works of art but they represent historic events. They depict a thousand story behind the hardships of soldiers and residents of the country. Each part of the monument is a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives and suffered during the war. The 9-meter high bronze statuary showcases the heartbreaking effect of the war on a family. Some art analysts also pointed out the equal role of men and women during the World War I.

Paul Mulligan a profile on our Croydon region Area Sales Manager
Tumblr media
Our latest blog in our series about our brilliant Area Sales Managers, and we’ve arrived in our Croydon area and Paul Mulligan. He was born locally, went to Primary School in Sanderstead and Secondary School in Purley so spent most of his early life in the area. His family are still in the Purley area now. Paul has moved further afield but still regularly walks on Riddlesdown Common.
A funny story about Paul from his teens is that he had a part time job in a DIY shop whilst he was studying at college. He is renowned for being the least handy person you could ever meet, so it’s no surprise to hear that the shop closed down! It gave him a great start with understanding the importance of customer service though. He moved on to managing a music store selling CDs and DVDs whilst he decided what he really wanted to do and chose estate agency because he wanted a job where no two days were the same, a varied role, one that was customer facing and where he wasn’t confined to an office all day.
Paul has now been an Estate Agent for over ten years and worked for two high street agencies, progressing from trainee to Branch Manager prior to joining us at Move Revolution in January 2015. He joined us as he could see market trends changing, the way in which people bought and sold was changing, and he wanted to be part of a more forward thinking company. Also, the challenge of opening up an office in his home town was something he relished.
In keeping with his heritage, Paul is a huge Crystal Palace fan and been a season ticket holder for over 20 years. He looks forward to the day when he takes his son (currently 9 months old) along with him to take in the atmosphere and cheer the boys on.
He enjoys hanging out with friends at Boxpark, where his favourite things are the Chicken Burger at Coqfighter and great cocktails in Yumn Brasserie. He also loves the tapas at Galacia and Las Fuentes.
He’s a lover of period property but likes a modern, contemporary interior whilst still retaining some original features, just like this one that we’ve just advertised for sale on Shirley Hills Road:
