Environmental Trends - Circular Economies and Their Benefits

An October 2023 article in the energy publication EEIP reported the top five trends in sustainability and climate change. One trend focuses on circular economies to address climate change. Circular economies use materials, products, and services as long as possible instead of creating new products and discarding them after use. Circular economies reduce waste by refashioning materials, products, and services and finding ways to reuse waste.
Circular economies eliminate waste and pollution and support the regeneration and circularization of products and waste. Activities in a circular economy include recycling waste and using biodegradable materials and waste to repair fully or partially damaged products. This is the case with a computer with functional parts that do not work. Those parts can be used to improve other computers. Waste that is not recycled is used to create energy.
Establishing circular economies in business practices is vital to addressing climate change. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, natural resource mining and processing are responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating climate change.
Climate change severely impacts people living in underserved communities facing adverse health and environmental challenges. For example, poor air quality can result in adverse health impacts for people living in these areas. Creating circular economies will protect the environment, increase social justice by creating self-sustaining communities, and improve economics.
The concept offers companies many advantages. It minimizes environmental impacts through regenerative farming, in which composting or anaerobic digestion, breaking down nutrients without oxygen, returns vital nutrients to the topsoil. Moreover, regenerative agriculture requires less water and organic fertilizer because every material used in farming has a purpose in restoring the degraded ecosystem, which reduces carbon emissions and their impact.
The farmer does not have to use as much organic fertilizer and water because they are recycled. In the case of organic fertilizer, animal waste (poop) can be recycled. Organic fertilizer is used because it is inexpensive, increases water retention in soil, stimulates healthy root development, and provides a steady flow of nutrients to the plant.
Circular economies contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. A case study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation reported that carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by half by 2030 if the global supply chain relied on renewable resources. For instance, manufacturers that use products made with nontoxic materials, recycled parts, and waste materials minimize soil erosion, water pollution, and air pollution.
Circular economies create new opportunities for product sharing instead of product ownership. One of the best examples of product sharing is Uber, a technology-based company that offers rides to consumers. The company's founders capitalized on the fact that a car spends 95 percent of its time parked. With this in mind, they created a product-as-a-service operation where riders and drivers save money and time. Riders may also ride in hybrid or electric vehicles instead of fossil fuel-operated vehicles.
Furthermore, Uber plans to deploy bikes and scooters and work with city transit to reduce reliance on personal vehicles. The company is looking toward partnering with local governments that incentivize participation in Uber programs.

STC and Gensler Partner to Build Safe Spaces for Future Architects

Schools That Can (STC) is a New York City-based program that assists middle and high school students from historically marginalized groups in preparing to join the workforce. A central activity of this organization is establishing partnerships with businesses and creating programs that encourage students to pursue careers in a specific field. Recently, the organization partnered with the architectural design firm Gensler to bring the Gensler Design Scholars program into two schools.
STC assists youth find careers through programs addressing career readiness, design challenges, and thought leadership. It serves over 210 schools and an estimated 75,000 students across four states. In an STC survey, 80 percent of students participating in its career readiness program stated that it helped them with career research and preparation, and 71 percent of students who participated in the design challenges rated their 3D design skills as strong.
A global design firm, Gensler works with 4,000 clients to address the world's most common challenges, assisting them in a range of architecture/design specialties encompassing work, lifestyle, community, and health sectors. The firm is expanding its platform to create an inclusive work culture across offices in 141 countries. The partnership with STC is one step toward reaching this goal.
The Gensler Design Scholars program directly connects students with architects and emphasizes student experiences as part of a work-based initiative. It has launched at two New York charter schools: MESA Charter High School, a math, engineering, and science school, and AECI-1, an architecture, engineering, and construction school. The eight-week program connects students with professional architects to provide them with real-world experiences within safe, inclusive spaces.
Weekly, approximately 15 students spend time with five to seven architects from the firm. During these meetups, students draft floor plans and create safe spaces from their notes, photos, sketches, and reference images. The students share their designs with the Gensler architects at the program's end, which also allows them to practice their public speaking and presentation skills. Students earn an STC Badge when they finish the program.
The architectural firm's work in this area is based on research that found that students in historically underserved communities face disparities inside and outside of the classroom, making attending a university or college program difficult. The firm incorporated this research in developing the Design Scholars program. For example, the program avoids the use of materials and colors that amplify wealth and class bias, and it emphasizes creating safe places that encourage a sense of belonging.
Representatives from both organizations expressed the importance of the partnership and the Gensler Scholars program for students. STC program director Anijeh Green stated that the program gives students a voice and space to share their personal experiences while helping them explore how these experiences contribute to creating a safe, inclusive environment for others. Furthermore, Mark Thaler, principal studio director at Gensler, said that working with students is one of the most rewarding activities architects can participate in, because it gives them a chance to help young people explore a career they might not have considered.
