When clueless, silence is golden
I was just browsing around while looking for something completely different and stumbled upon this quintessential Mordorian POV:

Disclosing a username is crass and I usually never do this, unless really necessary and relevant. So spare me the ad hominem argument you usually fumble around with, Disgruntled Tumblrettes. Yet, for all its intellectual paucity, this is interesting dissection material, since clearly this person hasn't got the slightest idea of what she is so confidently talking about.
First scenario at play: The Tasting Alliance, 'a company no one has ever heard of', booked and paid for the suite.
Not necessarily booked, nor necessarily paid, madam. In the real business world you are so clueless about, these arrangements are seldom - if ever - monetized. It's rather all about barter.
That company no one ever heard about - except, perhaps, #silly and totally irrelevant Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/sites/joemicallef/2023/04/13/the-tasting-alliance-and-reserve-bar-are-set-to-launch-top-shelf/?sh=b45f7085f6f1) - is the parent company of the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), largely acknowledged as at least one of, if not the world's leading spirits award contest. Google is your friend, you should try it some time:

The operative info here is that this evaluation comes from the Beverage Trade Network, a professional portal for spirit dealers. Having determined this, Tasting Alliance's IG number of followers is completely irrelevant, since we are talking about two very different targets, here. Its real leverage and weight on the global market does not really need the boost of an aggressive social media presence and the kind of events it hosts are not your favorite junior hockey league or elementary school cake and bake sale.
Let's look a bit further. It takes one click to get on the Tasting Alliance's website (https://thetastingalliance.com/). Granted, not all the information you need to understand its business model is right there and I had to go dig a bit (not without some help - merci encore!) to even get a grip on how these wheels are really turning.
The way they sell themselves is sober and confident. And completely disinterested in social media impact, to be honest:

So, in lieu of glitz and sequined bras, we have a success story in its own right, which started in Frisco in 1980, then continued in 2000, with the addition of the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Further expansion followed in 2018, with the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and 2019, when Dias Blue set a firm foot on the emerging Asian market, with the Singapore World Spirits Competition.
I doubt an explanatory drawing is needed as to the why of this expansion choice: it's all about baijiu, the old/new Chinese sorghum spirit and the everlasting love of the Far East for anything fermented. Lao-lao, the unspeakable Laotian homemade rice whisky, comes immediately to the mind of this blogger: the last bottle I saw, somewhere along the unexploded ordnance ridden Route 13, had a plump snake inside, as a naïve Viagra of sorts. Took a mouthful and thought I was going to die - but when spending the night in a longhouse with the Tai Lü people, you can't afford a faux-pas, can you? /end of travel memories intermezzo

By all my estimations, The Tasting Alliance is very profitable business. Let's unpack ( for current fees, see source: https://callingallcontestants.com/contest/2023-san-francisco-world-spirits-competition/):

Considering the 500 USD fee /entry (550, in 2023) in the competition and the fact that in 2022 there were approximately 5000 entries in the Frisco spirits' competition, we have a very rough turnover estimation of 500x5000= 2.5 million USD. That figure is just for one of the spirits competitions, mind you, and does not take into account what the winners probably pay for the right to mention their medals on their bottles (I am yet to see them on the SS gin bottles, btw), nor the multiple sidekick profit (e-shop sales, consulting and/or other distribution deals, etc). So, at the end of the day, I would comfortably multiply that base by 4, assuming a similar scale for all the other events they organize, which takes the yearly turnover at around 10 million USD and keeping in mind this is very probably a conservative estimation. I also assume costs are negligible, taking into account the discretion with which major players traditionally operate on that particular niche. Real expenses are probably limited to the activity of a handful of offices, sparingly and intelligently staffed. Advertisement is probably bartered and social media, well... you just saw the effort, haven't you?
But then there's the brand's real power on that market and this is the right time to talk about influence and impact. Perhaps this recent (2021) Men's Journal article will help us see better: https://www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/inside-the-san-francisco-world-spirits-competition

With a bit of luck, this could happen:

Sounds familiar? Of course and I bet that was S's strategy. If you imagined him doing the same exhausting booze tour every year (groping on top and seriously cringe on the sides), I think you might want to reconsider. I told you Sassenach Summer was a sandbox for more serious things to come and until now I have no reasons to change my mind. He did it for a reason and, mind you, that reason is not that the booze did or does not sell. It does. Restaurants start to feature it. Podcasts are being produced. The press starts to mention it (that recent New York Times article is evidence enough). This is not Lucky Luciano dealing in bootleg alcohol during the Prohibition and making obscene money over a fortnight. This is a serious business project that was delayed by COVID. That's all. And it takes time and patience and consistence. We know he has all those aplenty.
We also have the totally inane take on production costs for that podcast. It suddenly made me remember again my media expert past. It is with complete and educated confidence that I tell you: a potential 5K USD extra cost for renting that damn suite for the day is peanuts, even for a two-minute clip (let alone, in reality, a podcast interview, and I stand corrected if wrong), if such costs are covered by The Tasting Alliance. But my money is on a barter with The Shutters on the Beach, which would be, again, common business practice.
Second scenario: 'Shutters comped the room for free promo (...) for an actor most people haven't heard of.' You can throw timelines down my throat as many times as you wish and tell me he already stayed there several times and yell and screech, but here is what I think. Shutters didn't comp that suite for S, an actor most people haven't heard of, a decent, hard working start-up entrepreneur. If so (I doubt it), it would be logical to think Shutters comped that suite for The Tasting Alliance, which has a long documented history of partnerships with hotels that host their competitions:

So Shutters might have comped that room for a major player of the alcohol lobby world, happy that S, a returning client, picked them out of several possible options, because it was convenient. I don't believe for a second he stayed there.
This guy knows what he's doing and C's gin success completely depends and I bet will rely on that relentless networking effort. If anything, the Keepers of the Quaich recent development is only confirmation of all the above. But that's another story - very soon on this page.
IYKYK. The rest is uneducated cackle. But Mordor people were never the brightest bulbs in the fandom's chandelier, were they?

Mirin Market Growth & Trends
The global Mirin Market size is expected to reach USD 658.1 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Mirin, a sweet rice wine integral to Japanese cooking, is gaining global popularity due to its culinary versatility and cultural significance. Its ability to enhance flavors with a unique umami taste and sweetness makes it a valuable ingredient in a variety of dishes, from marinades and glazes to sauces and dressings. The global rise in Japanese cuisine, including sushi, teriyaki, and ramen, has spurred interest in authentic ingredients like mirin. Additionally, the trend of fusion cooking sees chefs and home cooks incorporating mirin into diverse culinary traditions.
Health-conscious consumers appreciate mirin for its natural fermentation process, perceiving it as a healthier alternative to refined sugars and artificial sweeteners. Its status as a premium, gourmet ingredient also attracts food enthusiasts and professional chefs looking to elevate their dishes. Increased availability in specialty food stores and online retailers has made mirin more accessible, contributing to its growing demand.
Consumer interest in mirin is driven by the desire to replicate authentic Japanese recipes, culinary exploration, and the cultural experience of using traditional Japanese ingredients. Trends such as the rise in Japanese restaurants, the popularity of home cooking, the health and wellness movement, and the influence of culinary education through cooking shows and social media are all fueling the market growth for Mirin. The shift towards gourmet and specialty products in home kitchens further boosts its popularity, making mirin a sought-after ingredient worldwide.

More Travel Fun
The low last night got down to 35 degrees and the high today was 55. The day started out overcast, but the clouds dissipated during the day and blue sky appeared, punctuated by a bright sun.
This morning’s blood sugar measured 145, still in a healthy range. Nancy and I had our coffee and then played all but two brain games before I had to leave for my podiatrist appointment.
According to the doctor, the arthritis in my foot is simply part of aging. She also said that giving up walking hard and fast was a good idea, but that I can continue to walk, doing it more slowly and taking care not to go so far that the pain increases. Finding an insert with a little more lift in the arch might help, I was told, but not to spend too much money on it. Filling out the paperwork almost took more time than I spent with the doctor. She said to get back in touch if I have more problems with my left foot, or the other one as well.
When I got home, Nancy and I finished the last two brain games. Then we took off for Creswell Bakery for a loaf of sourdough and two chipotle ham brioche sandwiches for breakfast.
Then we hit the road north, taking I-5. While I drove, Nancy did a little research in a couple of the Oregon travel magazines we’ve collected recently, looking for something we might actually be interested in seeing.
We wound up heading for Mount Angel, a city in Marion County of about 3,400 some 20 miles northeast of Salem. Originally settled in 1850, the city was incorporated April 3, 1893. Its name is the English translation of Engelberg, the Swiss city from a contingent of Benedictine monks arrived in 1881 in order to establish a new American monastery. About the same time large numbers of immigrants from Bavaria settled in the area.
Mount Angel is known for its annual Oktoberfest, the largest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. It features beer and wine gardens, sports tournaments and races, arts and crafts exhibits, a farmers market, community dinners featuring sausage and sauerkraut, and a wide assortment of food, games, and entertainment.
A 49-foot Glockenspiel was completed in time for Oktoberfest 2006. The largest in the United States, it is part of the Edelweiss Village Building. The building and tower resemble a large chalet with numerous Alpine features. The massive tower with its conical roof is a tourist draw similar to the Glockenspiels of Europe. We arrived in time to see the 1 p.m. Glockenspiel display, which features carved wooden characters from the area’s history and traditional music of several kinds. The routine occurs four times each day.
Our travel resources also mention the nearby city of Woodburn and the large immigration of Mexicans and the numerous restaurants and cafes currently in operation. (By the early 21st century, 59 percent of the population of the town was Latino, with a mix of first-generation immigrants and long-term residents.) Having had little success since our move to Oregon in finding good Mexican food, we hoped to find something tasty for a late lunch.
We lucked out with Casa de Caldos, a little place established in 2018, that specializes in soups and stews. We both chose the molé tacos with rice and beans and then experimented with a variety of salsas presented to us. I also got a Mexican coke. Everything was quite good, and spicy. We will certainly return when our adventures bring us in that direction again.
After lunch, we returned to Mount Angel and visited the Benedictine Brewery, the third of its kind in the U.S. It opened at the Mount Angel Abbey in 2018. Brewing is part of the Benedictine tradition since the early Middle Ages. The beer brewed at Mount Angel follows the early monastic tradition and is “crafted for a higher purpose.” The beer receives a priestly blessing at every stage, from raising the hops to pulling the tap. Nancy got a glass of St. Michael’s lager. I, of course, had a cup of water.
When we left the brewery, we made our way back to I-5 and headed home. We arrived by 5 p.m., and since our lunch was late and large, we had simple snacks for dinner.
Our streaming for the evening commenced with Colbert’s Wednesday night show, which featured CNN’s Jake Tapper as guest. We followed that with the newest episode of “Reacher” and the second episode of “Recipes for Love and Murder.”
The temperature is expected to get down to 34 degrees tonight, with the high tomorrow once again reaching 55. There is no rain in the forecast, but it appears the day will be partly cloudy, tending toward more sun by the end of the afternoon.

Scrape Food & Drink Delivery Data from Favor

Introduction
In today's digital age, data is the new currency, and businesses are constantly seeking insights to stay ahead of the curve. Food and drink delivery services like Favor have become integral parts of our lives, offering convenience at our fingertips. But did you know that you can extract valuable data from Favor to uncover trends, preferences, and consumer behavior? In this blog post, we'll explore the world of web scraping and how you can leverage it to scrape food delivery data from Favor.
About Favor Delivery
Established in Austin in 2013, Favor Delivery expanded its reach to encompass over 400 cities throughout Texas. With a fleet exceeding 100,000 Runners, the service has facilitated the delivery of over 80 million Favors to date. These deliveries include various items, from restaurant meals and alcoholic beverages to groceries and everyday essentials. Notably, in 2018, Favor achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first on-demand delivery company in the United States to attain profitability. This success caught the attention of grocery giant H-E-B, a cherished institution in Texas since its inception in 1905, leading to its acquisition of Favor.
Some Key Statistics of Favor Food Delivery in 2023
These statistics are taken from the inaugural "How Texas Orders In Report released by Favor Delivery, the sole restaurant delivery app designed by and for Texans, and now a part of H-E-B.
The data extracted for the report, covering the period from August 2022 to August 2023, confirms what many might expect: tacos hold the 1st position as the most favorite item in the state. Following closely behind are burgers as well as French fries, securing their spots as the 2nd and 3rd most favorite items in 2023, respectively.
The Rio Grande Valley emerges as the frontrunner for culinary preferences in tamale orders. At the same time, Dallas-Fort Worth takes the lead for the highest volume of chicken-fried steak, which is favored over any other market.
After considerable debate regarding the ideal accompaniment for tortilla chips, salsa emerges victorious, claiming the top spot, closely followed by queso, and then guacamole.
Regarding coffee preferences, Favor orders for iced coffee considerably surpass those for hot coffee statewide.
In San Antonio, residents satisfy their thirst with Big Red and iced tea, while Austinites lean towards kombucha, Dr Pepper, and coffee deliveries.
Houston solidifies its position as the wine consumption capital of Texas, leading in delivery orders for this beverage compared to other markets. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, and Rosé are among the preferred choices in the Bayou City.
Burgers, tacos, and chicken tenders are renowned favorites among college students at Texas' top universities. However, the cravings of Rice University students distinguish them from their peers, with a preference for donuts, sushi, and kolaches. Texas Christian University students opt for pasta, quesadillas, and burritos as their top choices, while Baylor University students are known for their fondness for cookies. Meanwhile, at the University of Texas at Arlington, egg rolls have captured a notable preference among students.
In Austin, the preference leans towards milder condiments, with ranch and ketchup topping the list of most ordered. Meanwhile, in the Rio Grande Valley, residents opt for a spicier palate, favoring hot sauce and chamoy to add some heat to their dishes.
In Dallas-Fort Worth, a display of Texas pride is evident, with the highest orders for cowboy boots and hats.
Texans' affection for their furry companions shines through in Houston, where pet owners prioritize ordering dog toys, closely followed by residents of Austin.
Austin, known for its outdoorsy vibe, demonstrates a penchant for over-the-counter allergy medicine and sunscreen, catering to its active population.
Corpus Christi, basking in sunny weather, leads the pack in ordering pool floats, reflecting the city's love for aquatic leisure activities.
Wing orders reach new heights during top national football and college basketball games.
On the Fourth of July, burgers are the preferred choice over hot dogs in all markets.

2020 Vanity Clean Out
I always try to clean out my vanity areas (places where I would keep my skincare, makeup, body care, & hair care products). This year I was a little late. I’ve had this stored in a bag for a really long time I just never got around to writing this up and taking pictures, because these posts tend to be long as I do like to talk a bit about them and the reason why I’m discarding them. Going forward, I would be adding these to my empties and clearing whatever I don’t want every month rather than doing it yearly.

HAIR CARE
1. Chi Silk Infusion (12oz / 300ml) Honestly, I don’t style my hair with heat tools that often enough to be using this. I’ve had this in my stash for a really long time. It does break my heart that I’m wasting this product since it’s practically still full. I would give this away but I’ve had this for so many years and there’s some weird sediments on the bottom that I don’t feel comfortable giving it away.
2. Aveda smooth infusion style-prep smoother (3.4oz / 100ml) I got this when I went and got a haircut at the Aveda school, which was a long time ago. Honestly, I didn’t find that it did much for my hair. There’s only a little left but I just don’t really reach for it.
3. Aveda invati scalp revitalizer (0.34oz / 10ml) I got this for free with a shampoo and conditioner. I’m not sure if it really did anything for my scalp and there was a strong herbal scent to it, which I’m not a big fan of. This product was also another that I didn’t reach for. There is only a little left but it is a very old sample.
SKIN CARE
4. Huxley Secret of Sahara Sleep Mask; Good Night (30g / 1.06oz) Honestly, I’m not a big fan of sleeping masks. I believe this one you can also use it as a moisturizer as well. I didn’t really like it, but packaging and product consistency are on point. I’ve only used it about 1-3 times, before it expired.
5. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Hydrating Toner (15ml) I tried using this but I can’t get past the scent of this. It does smell very natural, but strong as well. I’m going to keep the bottle as it’s glass and will be nice for travels. I also found the formulation sticky/oily as well. It does say to shake it before use each time.
6. Frienvita Peeling N Deadcell Sauna Godness Pad These were my worst purchase ever. I did bring a few of these on one of my travels but it was horrible. The pad fell apart so easily and the rice/ exfoliation product was so lumpy that it was super hard to spread, yet alone exfoliate with.
BODY CARE
7. The Face Shop smile foot Relaxing Patch These are amazing when your legs or feet are sore. I’m only getting rid of these because they have expired since 2018 and have lost its effectiveness. I did try them prior to putting it in my dispose bin.
8. Miniso Winter Lovers Hand Cream: Sweet Orange (0.7oz / 20g) I bought this on a whim since the store was closing and had a sale. The pack did come with 3 and I do know that I have used one up not sure about the second one. This one does smell pretty good but the formulation is very bad. It leaves a slight stickiness with a powdery residue. Also when I rub my hands I’m just rubbing the dirt and the cream itself off.
9. LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant: Vanilly Summer (57g / 2oz) This was my favourite deodorant for a long time. I really like the round shape as I never feel the plastic hitting my skin compared to the typical oval ones. I love the scent of this, this was a limited edition scent. This is just really old to the point that the actually product falls out now, plus the scent is no longer as strong as it was before. I’m a little sad that Sephora no longer carries this brand. I have also tried the Vanilla Passionfruit which is another one of my favourite scents.
10. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Liquid Crystal Deodorant: Lemongrass (60ml) I wasn’t a big fan of this. I didn’t like how grainy it felt. And like a lot of their products there is a strong scent. Not a big fan of liquid deodorants.
MAKEUP
11. Skin Food Pearl Creamy Under Eye Pencil This was one of the first ever eye product that I ever bought. I loved how creamy it was and the color pay off was excellent. I wished they still had this. I wasn’t able to find it when I went back in 2018. I have found that Skin Food seemed to be fading away in Korea and on the market.
12. LABIOTTE Wine Angle Mascara 02 Volume Fixer I wanted a mascara that would help with volume. I found that this one did give me volume but when I bat my eyes the product would transfer. I would not get this again. Packaging is very cute though.
13. The Face Shop Make Me Star waterproof gel liner 02 I didn’t really use this that much. Thought I would just have it on hand if I ever wanted to line my eyes. This has now become hard/ dried.
14. the Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer 01 I really liked using this concealer, but nowadays I just use my cushions as concealer as well. This one is just old and has separated now.
15. e.l.f Powder Brush This was my favourite brush. The handle actually came off, I did repair it but then it came off again. Hence I’m calling it quits for this brush now because I can always get another one since it’s inexpensive, but for now I will be using what is in my stash.
16. IOPE Air Cushion XP N21 Ice Vanilla I bought this on a whim and to test it out. This cushion is very old, back when cushions just started to become popular. Honestly, this was too light for my skin and felt very heavy, but gave a very dewy finish. I’m actually getting rid of the compact and a refill that I never opened. This cushion was quite expensive at the time like $40-50 CAD for a university student.
17. Laniege BB Cushion Light This was my first cushion. I’ve actually used. I did finish it, I just kept the case which I am now getting rid of.
18. moonshot Micro Correctfit Cushion 201 Beige This cushion was okay I still prefer the Microfit version. But the compact of this one is so pretty, sadly I dropped it on the ground and it’s broken. Hence, I’m discarding it. I did finish the product.
19. Mamonde Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid #21 Ivory This cushion was different in that it had a mesh part instead of a sponge. Coverage was high but I found it a bit cakey on my skin and heavy. I also found that it accentuated my dry areas.
20. Tarte energy LipSurgence skintuative lip tint I believe I got this through Sephora Birthday gifts. This is super old, hence why I’m discarding it. I loved this as it gave my lips the perfect amount of color and shine. Too bad they no longer have this. I was going to purchase/ find something similar but I have bought so many lip products over the years that I will have to hold off for now.

Intelligent harvesters are becoming increasingly popular across countries in Europe due to a notable surge in the adoption of robotics in harvesters. The presence of reputed equipment manufacturers in the region, that are engaged in extensive R&D, will boost the availability of intelligent harvesters. Consistent expansion of the fast-food sector, surging investments in modern farming, and high labor costs are among the key factors driving harvester sales in North America and Europe. The harvester market is segmented in terms of type, sales channel, and region.
The wine grape harvester industry share was valued at more than USD 900 million in 2021, with over 2,500 units shipped globally during the year. Dumplings.
I believe there are three kinds of people, at least in Chinese culture: people who like rice, people who like noodles, and people who like dumplings. My dad is definitely a dumpling person. He would used to wrap a whole tray full of dumplings every Sunday and store it in the freezer for the week. Sometimes at night, when I would get hungry for a late night snack, he’d boil some for us and we’d eat it together. I have so many happy memories associated with eating dumplings. It’s honestly the definition of comfort food for me. I remember eating dumplings during the most stressful times in my life and feeling so much better. During the time I studied abroad in Hong Kong, I came to a point where I was so stressed and tired of studying physics that my friend and I just dropped everything and took an hour break to grab dumplings. It is probably one of my happiest memories.
Needless to say (but I’m still going to say it.), I love dumplings.
Here’s my dad’s recipe:
400 g Ground pork ,at least 20% fat (you can replace ⅓ pork with shrimp)
200 g Chive ,hard ends removed
1 tsp.salt
1 tbsp. cooking wine
1/2 tsp. white pepper
1 tbsp. light soy sauce
1 tbsp. oyster sauce
1 tbsp. minced ginger
2 large eggs
3 tbsp. sesame oil ,divided
1/3 cup chopped scallion
2 tbsp. hot oil
Dipping sauce
2 tbsp. vinegar
3-4 ginger sheds
Filling:
In a mixing bowl, add ground pork, a small pinch of salt, egg, light soy sauce, white pepper, oyster sauce grated ginger and salt. Then place the green onion on top and drizzle hot oil on green onions. This helps to improve the aroma of the green onion.
Stir the filling in one direction for 2-3 minutes until getting a paste texture and the filling becomes quite sticky. Set aside for 1 hour or cover with plastic wrapper and overnight.
Finely chop chives and mix with 2 tablespoons of sesame oil or other vegetable oil. Mix chive with pork before wrapping.
*I’m not going to include the recipe for wrappers because my family usually just buys them from the chinese market.
Boiling:
Heat a large pot of water to a boiling, add a small pinch of salt. Then cook the dumplings in batches. Slightly move the dumplings with a large ladle or scoop so they will not sticky to the bottom. Then the water begins to boil again, add around 1/4 cup of cold water. Repeat once. When the dumplings become transparent and expand because of the air inside. Transfer out.

this one is SFW: contains feasting with a countess and making Devoraks blush.
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I jump a little as you squeeze me but I don’t make a sound. I hold your arm as we follow Nadia down lucio’s hallway and to the dining room. Servents scurry around and Nadia grabs one and tells them to find Portia and have her join us.*
*The dining room is also fairly busy. We are seated across from Nadia near the end of the table.*
thepleasureisguilty
*I sit next to you, holding your hand under the table and watching the servants scurry about and having this sensation of wanting to help *
11/13/2018
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Pasha comes through the doors in a hurry* “Countess, you called for me?” *she looked a little flustered, like she may have ran a bit to get here*
*Nadia held up her hand to calm her.* “To join us, for dinner.” *She gestures to the seat besides her. Portia blushed and walked over to the seat only then realizing who “us” accompanied*
“What??? Ilya??? Mast??? You both look so good! Ilyusha I didn’t even know you could wear at color..”
*nadia smirked* “they do look rather good don’t they? I dressed them up after I found them rummaging around in lucio’s closet of all places...”
*portia gave us a look and a gesture which I returned with a shrug*
thepleasureisguilty
*i wave at portia and give a guilty smile when she gestures at us*
Haha there really is no excuse portia *I shrug as well still grinning*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Portia narrows her eyes at us, as if to say that she doesn’t buy that there isn’t some wild story involved, knowing us.* *Nadia simply looks amused at the whole situation.* “So, Mast, you mentioned you run a lounge? Please tell me more.”
thepleasureisguilty
*i flush* oh i do, its a very... Underground business. An artist collective of sorts where the group can make a few bucks and have a place to practice their art. *I try to skirt past the fact that we feast on the leftovers of nobles*
If you ever would like a portrait done Nadia, i would be honored to assist
*my eyes go up to the painting in the dining room* that was commissioned by lucio wasnt it? ... *I smile* I can tell by the color scheme and composition
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Portia and and I devolve into making strange expressions at each other. A wordless conversion that is essentially a back and forth of “what did you do?” And “I didn’t do anything”*
thepleasureisguilty
*my eyes occasionally switch between you two and i laugh to myself*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*nadia looks thoughtful.* “I do appreciate the underground resurgence of art in this city. I always find the most interesting things there. Theaters, markets, alike. I’d be very interested to see what yours is like.” *She looks a little surprised when you offer to make her portrait and laugh when you say the one on the wall was obviously commissioned by Lucio.* “you’ve only spend a few minutes in his closet and already you can tell the man’s taste. How amusing.”
*Portia surfaces from our “conversation”* “Mast is really talented, my lady! They drew Pepe and I the other night.” *Nadia smiles* “well I’ll have to consider it, since they come so highly recommended.”
thepleasureisguilty
*I blush a bit at the praise and smile* id be happy to sketch you sometime to show you my talents Nadia. Then you may determine for yourself if it is justified
ask-a-slippery-boy
*She seems pleased* we’ll have to make an appointment of some sort.
*Servants come in with carts. They set down wide but shallow bowls of creamy soup. They set down glasses of fine white wine to pair with it, and vanish quickly as they appear*
thepleasureisguilty
*I inspect the food, the smell is rich in spices and fish* cream of scallop? *I venture the guess smiling*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*nadia nods* “You must have a good pallet. That is correct.” * the soup is delicious. I make a satisfied sigh as I eat, but that might also be because I can hold your thigh under the table without anyone noticing*
thepleasureisguilty
*I humm happily as you hold my thigh and i taste the soup, it is great. Highly doubt this batch would ever be sent back to the lounge *
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I trace circles into your inner thigh. I have such a hard time keeping my hands off of you, I’m actually surprised we ever make it outside sometimes* Delicious, as always. Thank you for the invite Nadia, your hospitality is greatly appreciated.
*Portia nods* “And thank you for inviting me to join you too! It’s nice to get a quiet moment with you *she blushes* e - everyone I mean
thepleasureisguilty
*I give a glance to nadia as though to let her know portia wasn’t talking about me or her brother* indeed ... More wine for anyone? *i stand and reach for the carafe *
*i refill your glass* I imagine you two don’t get many quiet moments *i grin slyly* running a city is exhausting and im sure portia feels it too being your right hand
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia is very perspective. Your Portia’s comment, along with your glance, do not go unnoticed to her. Everyone thanks you for the refill.* “Oh not at all!” *Portia insists* “Helping my lady is no trouble at all! Especially when she works so hard to keep the city together. You should see all the work she’s gotten done this last week! It’s incredible!” *Nadia flushes a bit under her praise* “Nonsense, Portia. You work very hard for me.” *there’s a low purr in her voice. I might not be particularly perceptive, but even I pick up on that little subtly* *I arch and eyebrow at Portia, who blushes deeply*
thepleasureisguilty
*i smile... Checkmate.... My brow raises to portia too* oh dont worry portia, i know for a fact how much you enjoy working for the countess, nothing you have told me would ever make me think you didnt enjoy your job *I smile earnestly knowing that my point has been made And the ball has began to roll*
*I sit back down and put my hand on your thigh, under the table*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*She turns bright red under our combined gaze. Nadia observes this with amusement and a mischievous curl of her lip. I could pick out a Dom Face (tm) from miles away. I’m deeply uninterested in knowing whatever she may be imagining for my baby sister, but I am glad to know that Nadia may be interested. If anyone would treat Pasha right, and give her the spoiling she deserves, it’s Nadia. Under the table, I put my hand on yours, and intertwine our touching legs. I attempt to act oblivious to all the different tensions happening at the table and work on finishing my soup*
thepleasureisguilty
*I try to hide a smirk with finishing my soup and drinking the wine, i intertwined our fingers together and reciprocate the leg touching, i am not acting oblivious at all to all the tensions in the room. I watch nadia, observing her Dom face gawking at the blushing portia... I trust that she will tell her how she feels when the time feels right. As for me and you... Everyone already knows were fucking.. No mystery to it and i like it that way... I like the fact that we and everyone knows we want eachother and it is simply up to us to determine when and how*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*As we finish our soup, servants re enter and take the bowls from us. They replace them with plates of roasted lamb, accompanied by many different sauces and sides of jeweled rice. I favor a minty yogurt for mine dish.*
thepleasureisguilty
*my mouth waters as i look at the plate* so... Did you know roasted lamb was my favorite meal countess?
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia looks surprised* “I did not, but I am glad to hear it. Hopefully it is cooked to your liking.”
thepleasureisguilty
*i cut open the meat, juice pours from it and the center is a bright pink color with charred edges* perfection....
ask-a-slippery-boy
“Ah I am happy to hear it. You are my guest, and I would prefer to to afford you as much luxury as I can.” *Nadia says*
thepleasureisguilty
*I smile, nod, and shamelessly dig in. The noise i make is slightly erotic without meaning to be*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I make a sensual satisfied sound that is perhaps a bit too loud when I take the first bite of the lamb. It is delicious. Portia shoots me an unimpressed expression.*
*Nadia smirks and teases* “It seems Portia was not exaggerating when she said the two of you were very well suited for each other.”
thepleasureisguilty
*I swallow and chuckle at nadias comment and look to you lovingly*.... I guess not *i smile and squeeze your hand before diving back into the meat*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I beam back at you, my lips are shiny with the oils of the lamb. Being slightly uncouth next to you? My fantasy come true. This tender moment is slightly interrupted when Nadia says.* “Next time we really ought to invite Asra, and MC as well. Gather the ‘old gang’ as it where.” *I accidentally inhale a grain of rice and choke on it rather ungracefully*
thepleasureisguilty
*the second bite holds all the flavor, it is full bodied and juicy, theres a bit of blood left that leaves a fatty copper taste to it. The texture is divine, the meat is tender and ritch. Garlic, sage, tyme, and rosemary was rubbed into the outside of the slab before being cooked. The roasting process formed a crunchy heavily seasoned layer on the outside and a soft, tender middle...im missing something... It adds to the moisture of the flesh... White wine!... Slits made in the cut towards the end of the cooking process flooded with white wine... Ohh this truly is magnificent. I take a bite of the rice... Olive, garlic, parsley and a creamy dill flavor hit my senses... Little bits of chopped up onion...and the rice is panfried so it has bits of crunch to it... --- my enjoyment of the meal is interrupted by you choking, i offer you my water and rub your back*
ask-a-slippery-boy
A A Asra? *Cough* I-if you so wish it Countess. It um... has been a while. *Nadia raises an eyebrow* “Oh, is there a problem, I had thought the two of you had put your... past behind you.” *I cough a few more times* We did errr that is, we have... *I blush deeply*
thepleasureisguilty
*I raise a brow, before i put two and two together* Asra?
And old lover im assuming *i raise a brow and smirk at you*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I drink some wine to finally stop my choking* The three of us... Nadia, Asra, and I, used to be quite close friends... “Yes,” Nadia chimed in, “This was before Julian ‘murdered’ my husband.” *I flush deeper and deeper* Well things progressed between Asra and I, but the ending was.... a little messy.... “Yes, our Doctor was thoroughly heart broken if I recall correctly.” *Nadia added helpfully* *I shoot her an exasperated expression* It was a long time ago. But... well, that last fight was a little hurtful... we both said things we shouldn’t have.
“And” *added Nadia* “They have spent plenty of time to get her since then. I personally don’t understand where your anxiety stems from.” *Nadia said. I only know that she It attempting to comfort me after knowing her for so long. Her approach is generally logical and a little cold.* “Clearly Asra has let the past go. You should not be worried about what he has left to say to you.”
True. *I pose with my fingers on my forehead dramatically* But it was not Asra’s heart that was broken on that fateful night *Truthfully I don’t know why I’m still scared to see him. Maybe because I know that he’s seen my worst qualities and isn’t afraid to point them out. I hope I can cover any genuine concern by pretending to be overdramatic*
thepleasureisguilty
*damn harsh... Nadias words strike... But your reaction it seems like youve dealt with this before... I give you a look when you overdramatize and bring your hands from your face and into mine* okay drama queen *i smile trying to lighten the mood* if you need to have a long talk with asra to calm your anxieties about him... Then I suggest you do it, it can even be at the lounge if you like... If you dont want to do that then i wont encourage us going on a triple date with him *I smile and touch the bottom of your chin in a "buck up" manner*
But i will have you putting on a one man show to hide your anxiety... Deal? *I smile at you hopeful *
ask-a-slippery-boy
*But do we need to talk? I’m not sure what we would say to each other. I give your hand a squeeze.* I... I don’t know if a heart to heart is exactly what a I need or not, but I’m not opposed to a triple date. *Portia blushes deeply each time we say that word* I think exposure may be the correct therapy here. *I kiss your hands* Nadia is right, we have spent time together since. I don’t think there’s much remaining as far as bad blood goes. *I kiss your hands again* Thank you for being understanding. Don’t let your lamb go cold on my account. *I smile and let you go. Returning back to my food as well*
thepleasureisguilty
*I squeeze your hand reassuringly and glance apologetic at nadia and portia nodding my head at each of them before returning to the lamb*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*they both seems happy that you managed to talk me down. Both have bore witness to how deep I can go into my little tangent. Nadia does not approve of emotional coddling, but she seems to appreciate your problem solving approach. Portia smiles to herself too. *
thepleasureisguilty
*i understand the spiral... The use of theatrics to hide real emotion or make satire out of what your feeling. I also know that one needs to be told they are doing so and given another solution to the issue*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I don’t think I’ve ever been with anyone who really understood the motions of my emotional spirals as well as you do. I squeeze your leg under the table. This isn’t the time to talk about it really, but I do appreciate it. I appreciate you, entirely. I shoot you a loving look.*
thepleasureisguilty
*I reciprocate the squeeze and look back at you smiling* So, when are we planning this triple date or then? *I perk up smiling at Nadia and Portia*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia smirks and Portia turns red* “Hmm... unfortunately I don’t have much as far as free time as of late. I have lots of projects in the works, things Vesuvia desperately need. Finally I’ve removed most of my obstacles in completing them.“
thepleasureisguilty
If there is anything i can assist you with Nadia, please just ask *i smile at her* you have been very...kind to me. I want to be of assistance anyway i can.
ask-a-slippery-boy
*She sighs* “it’s hard to tell what I’ll be needing in the future. But I will keep you in mind should I need use of your skills. Thank you for the offer, Mast. I do look forward to our date” *she made a meaningful glance at Portia, who looked like she may jump out of her skin* “I just cannot guarantee that it will be very soon.” *She smiled mischievously* “And I would like very much to visit your lounge. Portia,” *Portia jumped to attention* “Would you like to attend with me? See what sort of trouble your brother has gotten himself into?”
thepleasureisguilty
*I cant help but grin in semi disbelieve and victory, a heavy sense of accomplishment washing over me as nadia asks*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Portia gave me a look up and down, eyes lingering on my bite marks* “I’m not sure how much I want to know.”
Nadia laughed. “Yes. I did see perhaps a little too much when I found them earlier...”
“Oh gross!!! I am so sorry my lady! Ilya! I cannot believe you!”
thepleasureisguilty
*I flush and laugh a bit* honestly I think it was a good thing you came in when you did nadia *I blush more very embarrassed and a little proud*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia’s grin deepened, obviously getting a bit of a kick out of grossing out Portia and embarrassing me* “Oh? And why is that, Mast?”
*I turn red*
thepleasureisguilty
*uhoh... Was not expecting that...* uh hhh hmmm *i turn bright red nable to answer, my articulation skills have betrayed me*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia rests her head on her hands and waits patiently for you to answer clearly*
thepleasureisguilty
*i smirk wide and rest my head on my hands in the same fashion* you would have been blind by all the gody things we were trying on in your husbands closet...
Seriously some of the things he owned were quite terrifying. Im only glad you were spared
*i sip my wine raising my eye brows at her*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Pasha pretends to gag. I say nothing, knowing i will only blow your cover if I try and help. Nadia, on the other hand, I’ve never seen such an evil look on her face.* “I assure you the most terrifying things in there were gifts from me. Did you have any favorites?”
thepleasureisguilty
Hmmm *I scratch my chin thoughtfully* I would have to say my favorite gawdy thing in there, that i saw so far* would have to be the large red cloak with white fur and black spots on it with the giant gold lion clasp in the front
*I chuckle while saying it, honestly not knowing if he owned such a thing*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia sighed, disappointed* “Oh I thought you were talking about the flogs. You’re quite right, I hated seeing that dumb cape. A lion? Honestly...”
thepleasureisguilty
Flogs? Oh we didnt get that far! Perhapse you could show us later? If you like *i smile* and agreed *I nod fain knowing what shes talking about* very distasteful
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia places a hand on Portia’s shoulder, who looks as though she may faint* “I’ll think about it, I’d hate to scare dear Portia here. Unless red hair and easily flustered aren’t the only dominant Devorak genes...” *im not particularly surprised that Nadia knows what a massive masochist I am. It’s not exactly a secret. But Pasha... looks confused and terrified. I’d have to tease her about it later.*
*As we finish dinner, servants replace our lamb with delicate little cakes. Each seems to be a different flavor. Mine is white chocolate and raspberry*
thepleasureisguilty
*I chuckle at the situation and turn my attention to the little cake* Mmmm coffee and a dark chocolate
ask-a-slippery-boy
*The cake is good too. I make another sound that could possibly be interpreted as lude. Pasha looks like she could kill me. * Nadia, this is so delicious, I am continuously impressed with your skillful chiefs.
thepleasureisguilty
*I make a sound at my second bite of the tiny cake* agreed this is a wonderful meal, thank you so much
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia smiles* well thank you for the company. Even if it was... unexpected.
thepleasureisguilty
*I smile back and chuckle* dont worry nadia... Next time we break in we promise to be much more careful not to get caught *I wink at her*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia scoffed* I’d much prefer that you ask me if you may visit. I might even let you use a bath that isn’t covered in a thick layer of dust and Gods knows what else.” *she gives us a meaningful look when she said “what else” that makes me blush.*
*Portia chimes in* What you used Lucio’s /Bath/ too???
thepleasureisguilty
*I smile guiltily at portia* I am of course joking nadia... I would definitely ask your permission first
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia relaxes* “Good I would hate to put my guards on high alert to spot you. It would probably even more embarrassing to be caught by them than by me. They won’t wait until a convenient time to stop you...” *she winks*
thepleasureisguilty
*I laugh embarrassed and turn a bright red again I look at you to see your reaction as well*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I have been caught with my pants down by the palace guards before.* No, they do not. *i state this matter of factly. When I catch your eyes I smile softly at your blush. It’s so damned cute.*
thepleasureisguilty
*I sputter out a laugh at the no they dont attempting not to cackle*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*nadia gave Portia a sympathetic pat* siblings can be difficult
thepleasureisguilty
*poor portia, this entire night she has been embarrassed and practically tormented by nadia.... I know shes loving the attention though*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I decide to cut Portia some slack and give her something else to think about besides Nadia’s close proximity and all the wild sex you and I have been having since we last spoke to her.* It’s been a few days, I have to ask, how is my niece Pepi? Is she happy? Does she miss me?
*Portia rolls her eyes* “Pepi is very happy! Unlike you, I take good care of her!” *I roll my eyes back* you asked me to watch her, and I did. She’s fine. *Portia looks offended* She’s fine because I came home in time to save her from you!
thepleasureisguilty
*I turn to you* ilya? Did you not take care of pepei? *I narrow my gaze at you*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I take a deep breath* I did. I swear.
*Pasha pips in* “He did not! That giant raven of his was going to carry her off!”
No he wasn’t! He’s a good- *I flush, the words “good boy” almost come out of my mouth. I’m a little extra sensitive to the phrase these days* he’s a good bird. And I was watching to make sure anyways... also Malak isn’t even my bird. We’re just friends....
thepleasureisguilty
Malak is a good boy I can say that for a fact. And I'm sure pepei wouldn't let anyone man handle her *I smile*
ask-a-slippery-boy
*I shift my posture as you say the phrase. Nadia defiantly notices. Portia pouts* “Even fighters need help sometimes. And Ilya if the Raven is your friend then I’m sure he’s rowdy. He squawks up a storm whenever he sees me.”
*I blink* must be the uniform…
*she narrows her eyes* Ilya that doesn’t make any sense
*Nadia leans on her hands* “It’s hard to say, Portia. Julian seems like a /good boy/. I’m sure he wouldn’t leave your dear Pepi at risk...” *I flush deeply and grab your hand* *Pasha misses the significance* He’s not! He’s loud and rowdy and he drinks to much and everyone know it!
thepleasureisguilty
* give Nadia a protective look and rest my arm on your shoulder* he is portia... * I look at you* and i wouldn't want it any other way
ask-a-slippery-boy
*Nadia simply looks amused. I am turning deeper red by the second. Portia is apparently more oblivious than I am. I clear my throat*
to be continued...

An alcoholic drink is a drink that contains ethanol, a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruits, or other sources of sugar that acts as a drug. The consumption of alcohol plays an important social role in many cultures. Most countries have laws regulating the production, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Regulations may require the labeling of the percentage alcohol content (as ABV or proof) and the use of a warning label. And some countries ban such activities entirely, but alcoholic drinks are legal in most parts of the world. The global alcoholic drink industry exceeded $1 trillion in 2018.
Alcohol is a depressant, which in low doses causes euphoria, reduces anxiety, and increases sociability. In higher doses, it causes drunkenness, stupor, unconsciousness or death. Long-term use can lead to an alcohol use disorder, an increased risk of developing several types of cancer, and physical dependence.
Fermented drinks Beer Beer is a beverage fermented from grain mash. It is typically made from barley or a blend of several grains and flavored with hops. Most beer is naturally carbonated as part of the fermentation process. If the fermented mash is distilled, then the drink becomes a spirit. In the Andean region, the most common beer is chicha, made from grain or fruits. Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world. Wine Wine is a fermented beverage produced from grapes and sometimes other fruits. Wine involves a longer fermentation process than beer and a long aging process (months or years), resulting in an alcohol content of 9%–16% ABV. Cider Cider or cyder (/ˈsaɪdər/ SY-dər) is a fermented alcoholic drink made from any fruit juice; apple juice (traditional and most common), peaches, pears ("Perry" cider) or other fruit. Cider alcohol content varies from 1.2% ABV to 8.5% or more in traditional English ciders. In some regions, cider may be called "apple wine". Fermented tea Fermented tea (also known as post-fermented tea or dark tea) is a class of tea that has undergone microbial fermentation, from several months to many years. The tea leaves and the liquor made from them become darker with oxidation. Thus, the various kinds of fermented teas produced across China are also referred to as dark tea, not be confused with black tea. The most famous fermented tea is kombucha which is often homebrewed, pu-erh, produced in Yunnan Province, and the Anhua dark tea produced in Anhua County of Hunan Province. The majority of kombucha on the market are under 0.5% ABV. Mead Mead (/miːd/) is an alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. The alcoholic content of mead may range from as low as 3% ABV to more than 20%. The defining characteristic of mead is that the majority of the drink's fermentable sugar is derived from honey. Mead can also be referred to as "honeywine." Pulque Pulque is the Mesoamerican fermented drink made from the "honey water" of maguey, Agave americana. The drink distilled from pulque is tequila or mescal Mezcal. Rice wine Sake, huangjiu, mijiu, and cheongju are popular examples of East Asian rice wine. Others"Fruit wines" are made from fruits other than grapes, such as plums, cherries, or apples. Sparkling wine like French Champagne, Catalan Cava or Italian Prosecco can be made by means of a secondary fermentation.

A French Excursion

Toulouse
7/29/2018 - My first taste of Europe began in the south of France, in the city of Toulouse. My expectations of France stemmed from books and movies, which truly limits you to two senses; sight and sound. Naturally I expected to see breathtaking architecture and streets filled with centuries of European history. What I hadn’t anticipated were the other senses we would experience; the smells, the flavors, and the feeling. As I write this segment of the blog, I’m sitting on the terrace of our hotel as the sun rises to awaken the city. You can hear the vrooms of mopeds weaving through the alleys. You can feel the fresh breeze of the crisp morning air with a hint of a summer scent drifting with it. It’s something capable of forcing a pessimist to smile. The temperature is a comfortable 69°F (about 20°C). I’m sipping my morning “café – coffee” as I wash down my “chocolatine - a chocolate croissant”, that we bought just last night while walking around the markets. While other visitors come out to their balcony, you greet them with “bonjour” as if you’ve been saying it for years. There isn’t a skyscraper in sight. Just brick buildings upon brick buildings that look like they all have a story to share. Rob has spent several days already completing an extended business trip at Airbus. While he’s at work today, I am off to spend my first day exploring the city, solo.

As mentioned, Rob had been spending some time at Airbus, providing product support. Through work, he made a friend at Airbus (Julien), who invited us over for a late dinner at his place. Julien’s girlfriend and I spent the day sightseeing in Toulouse. At dinner, Julien, prepared us duck soaked in red wine, served with rice, French pâté, cheeses of all varieties, meats, and more. Then we washed it all down with some rum, where our new friend showed us how to prepare it properly. Julien told us about his home country; a tiny island nestled to the east of Madagascar. A fun and delightful way to spend our last night in Toulouse.

[a free tour inside the Capitole de Toulouse Building, pictured above]
To sum up a few interesting facts I learned in my first few days in France:
There’s a TV tax - used to fund local French TV networks.
Business isn’t always open – With Paris being the exception, hours of operation tend to vary in France. Sometimes it’s too late in the day for a croissant at a café. Or sometimes it’s too early for dinner and all restaurants don’t open until 7:30 PM. A way to avoid this is by going to bakeries for baked goods and then going to a local park. It’s much more efficient if you’re on the go, downside being you miss the outdoor café on the street atmosphere. Apart from food, boutiques are typically not open until 10 AM or so. Oh and Sundays? Forget about it. Many of the French truly live by exercising their day of rest. That goes for shops as well. Need not worry! There may be a local outdoor market open.
Bakeries are no joke – Bread is the staple of this country. It was a major player in the French Revolution. Seeing passersby with a baguette in their bag is in no way unusual. There’s a bakery around every corner, each item a soft, fluffy, piece of heaven. You can smell the bakeries in the street, making it impossible not to stop and snag a pastry.
Cheese is also no joke - The French cheese puts our cheese to shame. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a nice Wisconsin sharp cheddar as much as the next guy...but French cheese is savory on a whole other level!
Bordeaux
7/31/18 - Next stop, that’s right you guessed it; wine country. We decided to rent a car, a manual no less. A French car; a Peugeot. It was about a 2-hour drive north of Toulouse. Having experience driving a manual, I thought what a thrifty idea. Let’s not get into the narrow European one-way streets...eventually, we made it to Bordeaux. The city itself is just that, a city. Where were the acres of vineyards? We would soon travel 20 min east to Saint-Émilion to find out. But before we head out of the city, we stop by the Bordeaux Wine Museum. The Museum included a tasting and allowed you to explore the smells and sights of wine around the world. It was cool to see Yakima Valley (a Washington region) being recognized as a world-renowned wine within the museum. Wine is a big contributor to romance; the museum touched on that countless times. An interesting take on wine. After grabbing a French lunch buffet, we head out towards Saint-Émilion. The streets start to quiet and those vineyards finally make their grand appearance.

Our Airbnb sat within vineyards and the city we’d just left behind was a world away. This is the kind of countryside life where you can really forget about your troubles. The next day we had an electric bike tour planned through the Saint-Émilion chateaus and little did we know what an exceptional experience it would turn out to be.

Our tour consisted of 8 riders and one guide. Our guide Julie was a local French gal, sharing her knowledge of the area’s history as we zigged and zagged through the back roads of vineyards. We learned about the importance of the soil; the area mostly comprised of limestone and clay - the perfect soil suitable for merlot and cab franc. The other 6 riders in our group were all Australian and what an entertaining lot they were! As we made our way through the hills, we eventually made our first stop at Château Panet. Here we walked through the Château where the wine was being made, learning about the process along the way. We ended the tour with an outdoor picnic of wine, cheeses, meats, and breads. We chatted with the rest of the group, learning that they all are from Melbourne. One of the riders complimented me on my accent, which was the first and likely the last time that will ever happen. Who ever thought an American accent could be “charming”?

Our final stop on our tour was Château Saint-Georges, a true castle once owned by the king of France. We walked around the breathtaking grounds, stopping to try the smells and flavors in the garden. Each item in the garden was carefully chosen to help represent different notes within the wine. They also told us about how much the weather impacts the harvest, and why you often hear wine connoisseurs say things like, “2015 is an excellent vintage” or “that’s a good year”. We learned how you identify older wines vs younger by the color. We discovered so much about wine that we didn’t know, in such a short span of time.
Paris
8/3/18 - Paris, the world’s most visited city in the world, is its own breed. Comparing it to the rest of France isn’t a fair comparison really. We stayed at an Airbnb apartment within the heart of the city. Everything was within walking distance, with places like Notre Dame just a short walk away. Sure, in a city like Paris you’re going to come across a few homeless people digging through the trash and you have to be mindful of the possibility of pickpockets. If you’re able to avoid this and/or not allow it to spoil your visit, Paris can be very charming. Keeping a loose agenda and simply walking along the river, stumbling across places as you go, is the best way to do it. We stopped by a cafe, where a friend of a friend had just opened business (Jozi Cafe). He gave us some great advice on things to see and things to avoid. We joked with him about how he’d never been to the Louvre, much like we’ve never gone on Ride the Ducks in Seattle and how you’re often not the tourist in your own city. We visited Shakespeare and Co. bookstore to check out the 1920′s gathering spot for famous writers such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. We even bought Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway, a nonfiction that he wrote describing his time in Paris. Don’t forget to have the store clerk stamp your book with a Shakespeare & Co. stamp before you go!

The Eiffel Tower - the symbol of romance in Paris. You can find an Eiffel Tower in the states on shirts, bags, or home decor. Seeing it in person really depicts its grandness. We needn’t bother go up the tower; we simply wanted to see it up close and in-person. Our 4th Wedding Anniversary we spent at a restaurant on the water, just beneath the tower. While enjoying our meal and our view, we did our favorite thing to do when we travel; people watch. We noticed our server speaking Spanish to the table to our right and French to the table on our left. He spoke English to us, so this was pretty impressive how he could just switch gears in a matter of moments. Tipping is not a custom in France, but you can certainly leave one if you feel the service was superb. While the boat tour on the river had been going on for hours, we opted to skip it during the day. The weather was hot, muggy, and uncomfortable. Instead, we did the tour during the sunset which proved to be both romantic and a much more comfortable and rewarding experience.

We spent our last day at The Louvre. We managed to see all of our favorites within 3 hours. The renaissance paintings being our favorite. Liberty Leading the People left the biggest impression on me. It was a must see and I wouldn’t recommend skipping it if you’re in Paris. Overall, we loved France and have every intention of visiting again one day. Travelling really teaches you a lot of lessons and opens your eyes to the big beautiful world out there. You also learn a lot about your own country through the perspective of other countries. Our craving for travel continues so stay tuned! We aren’t certain where our next trip will be. Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iceland, and the UK are all on the horizon. Thanks for reading; until next time.
