I feel like Daemon would've been far more palatable if they had devoted more time to highlighting his (alleged) good traits. The show made him so unnecessarily chaotic in s1, that it's difficult to feel anything other than disgust or annoyance, which is not what I think grrm intended.
I think I mentioned this in another ask last year, but the thing about Daemon is anything that could make him interesting is either something added in post-hoc (like talking about how he wanted Viserys romantically/sexually) or up to Matt's acting choices (like Daemon's tendency to do the headbutt of love when he's feeling affectionate). There's very little of Daemon as he was written, as a character, that isn't just super annoying, and anything that could make him interesting (to me at least) like his courtship with Laena, his complex feelings about gender and romance as it relates to his feelings for Viserys, those rare moments from the show where he's trying to be supportive of Rhaenyra as an adult would be to a child in need, sexual mores as it relates to sexuality and how an attraction to men might be seen as more taboo than incest due to his Targaryen nature and Westerosi society, are barely there or outright not there at all.
I think someone in that writing room really hated Matt Smith, cuz Daemon has been written not only have all the worst qualities of his book counterpart, like his predilection for teen girls and his bad personality and that time he hired goons to cut off a six year old's head and terrorize a toddler and threaten to rape a little girl, but they added stuff too, like killing Vaemond without compunction while he was defenseless, murdering Rhea and getting away with it even tho she never did anything to him, being an ass to his daughters by Laena, and straight up throttling Rhaenyra because he was pitching a fit.
#personal#answered#anonymous#there are things that can make daemon work even post blood and cheese#(tho that mostly relies on nettles cuz i have Thoughts about daemon and nettles)#but they are not doing any of that i think they hate daemon and matt tbf because daemon is just the worst man alive#show daemon is my nemesis i want to hit him with a chair

Chapter 58
Cw: mentions of murder of children, regular murder, mentions of sexual assault
Gif by @boutellas
Taglist: @mercedesdecorazon @stargaryenx
By the time Arryk Cargyll had stumbled into the Princess’ chambers, he was half dead, when Ser Erryk used the last of his strength to finish the job, Rhaena had already killed him.
Despite the strict training Daemon had given her, Rhaena had never killed someone.
“It’s over, sweet girl, he can’t hurt you.” The Rogue Prince held her as a father should. “You will be safe in the Vale, with all of Jeyne Arryn’s knights there to protect you.”
Even evil can love their child, Aemma supposed.
Rhaena was silk hiding steel, deadly and sharp.
Arryk had thought the girls easy prey.
“Gods forgive me.” The knight had said over and over again until he fell to his knees with Rhaena’s dagger in his neck.
“He was here to kill your daughter, an heir for an heir.” Daemon speaks, not to them, but her mother who has left her rooms in a fright.
She had run here, weeping and fearing the worst.
“Did he hurt you?” she asked as she moved Gerardys aside and checked Aemma for even the slightest of injuries.
“No, Rhaena killed him before he could carry out his mission.” Daemon answered for her to her annoyance. She’s never liked him, now Aemma is sure she hates him.
Hates how casual he is about violence, how he prances around here as if he had not ordered the death of a little boy and the rape of his sister while their mother, brother and grandmother watched helplessly.
Hates the glaring similarities between him and Aemond.
“I am fine, mama, we are fine. Thank gods, Rhaena had her knife on her.” Aemma said and tried not to look as terrified as she was.
Ser Erryk was not.
His wounds too severe to treat and every scream threatened to be his last.
Gerardys has said he will confer with the Sea Snake’s Maester and see to the best course of action regarding the knight, but they all know he means, whether the knight will choose to die painlessly or die in agony.
“I will have the princess be attended by midwives at all times, your grace, I would not be surprised if the little prince were to decide to make an appearance before the week is over.” The maester finished his report to the Lord Hand, his wife and her mother.
“I do not understand, why would they do such a vile thing?” the queen asked and only Aemma seems brave enough to tell her.
“Because Daemon ordered two men to kill Jaehaerys in revenge for Luke’s murder. Aegon wanted revenge.”
Rhaenyra had assumed it was just some bullshit he had made up in his drunken stupor. He was prone to speaking nonsense when drunk.
He had killed Rhea, spoken in his cups about how he took a rock and bust her head open with it.
But then Rhaenys told her Laenor, her last true friend, had been killed by his orders.
He killed their nephew, a boy of four.
Jaehaerys had been murdered after his twin was raped while their mother, baby brother and grandmother were forced to watch and choose who was to die.
She feels wretched.
The man she loves has never stopped being the monster she and her father refused to see.
“I avenged our son; I promised you his death would not go unpunished.” He defends himself and she pulled away from his touch in terror.
“He was a little boy; sweet Helaena has never done anything to deserve that! Wasn’t it enough that my brother rapes her each night that you had to make her watch as they raped her baby girl?” the queen berates her husband who lacks the compassion to care for anyone who isn’t in his immediate circle.
“It was out of my control, I only asked for the head of one of the princes. Blood and Cheese claimed they couldn’t get close to Aemond because your daughter let him back into her bed and Aegon was too heavily guarded.”
Aemma was not received warmly into his heart.
Aemma had correctly guessed that the man killed that night had not been Laenor, Aemma had seen it before Corlys tortured Laenor’s murderer for the truth.
Rhaenyra had been like that once, too smart for her own good and never taken seriously by her father and his council.
Cursed to love a man bathed in the blood of the innocent. It was the curse of dragon women, to love a man to the point of madness.
“Do you think me a fool, husband?” the queen asked her consort. “You did not want justice for my son, you wanted to hurt them where it hurts the most.”
“And so what if I did? It was only supposed to be the death of either boy, Blood and Cheese did as they were told.” He defended his actions, his violence and cruelty. “Everything else was just an unfortunate accident.”
Daemon spoke as if this had been as trivial and commonplace as if one of the children had accidentally lost a milk tooth playing in the gardens.
“Leave.” She cannot kill him, cannot punish him because she knew who he was before she agreed to marry him mere weeks after Laenor’s death.
“I did this for you and your ingrate daughter, you cannot dismiss me as if I were some servant, Rhaenyra!” he was taken aback by her single demand.
“I know.” The queen admits. “But as your wife, I only ask that you give me time to reconcile myself with that.”
“You!”
Helaena snarled and pointed a shaking finger at them.
She was not supposed to come, Helaena was too fragile to attend or so everyone had said.
But she comes anyways, wearing black for mourning, black for defiance.
“It is because of you that my baby boy is dead! You killed us all!” the Queen screams at her mother and grandfather.
They say she is mad, and maybe she was, but she has never felt more herself until now.
No more being a good girl for mother, no more being the passive puppet she and grandfather wanted her to be.
It ends now.
Everything she has done out of duty has been for naught, everything she was forced to sacrifice on the altar of their ambition screams at her from where her baby lies under a dark green shroud.
“Daemon killed your son, my love.” Her mother tries to coax her into being her little lamb again.
But no more.
The queen has gone mad, they whisper about her in pity.
“He too will pay, but they will make you pay too. Did you think the gods won’t punish House Hightower for the sins you and the Lord Hand committed?”
She needs to leave, to take her daughter and remaining son and hack away at the roots until she and her children are far far away from them all.
Yes, they will fly away and never look back.
But for that to happen, King’s Landing must fall.

Women to consider for "other" (I ran out of slots)
Terentia: Cicero's wife and loyal supporter. She came from a wealthy family and was incredibly wealthy herself, being the one to pay for her daughter's dowry. When Cicero was exiled, she was the one to manage all of his affairs in Rome, and was the one to rally support and petition for his recall. Even I, the most ardent of Cicero haters, think she was cool.
Servilia: Long time lover of Julius Caesar and sister of Caesars' political enemy, Cato the Younger. There's a famous story where Caesar received a letter during a senate meeting. Cato, thinking that it was related to a conspiracy, demanded that Caesar read it out loud. He did. It was a love letter from Servilia. She was also the mother of Brutus, of "et tu, Brute?" fame.
Sulpicia: A female poet from the Augustan age, and one of the very few female Roman poets whose poetry survives. (Read the poems here)
Eumachia: Pompeiian woman. Incredibly wealthy, the head priestess of Venus, and patroness of the fullers guild. She paid for a big ol' building to be constructed in Pompeii. (We're not sure what it was used for.)
Locusta: Was allegedly the one to provide Agrippina with the poison to assassinate Claudius so that Agrippina's son Nero could become emperor. Afterwards, Nero would use her to assassinate his step-brother Britannicus. Nero freed her from prison, named her imperial poisoner, gave her a large estate, servants, and sent her students to learn how to poison.
Moving to more mythical women:
Cloelia: A hostage during the Roman-Eutruscan wars. She escaped by swimming across the Tiber when her captors led her and the other female hostages to bathe. She led the other girls across the river and returned them to their families. The king was at first outraged, and then impressed. He said that if Cloelia returned, he would allow her to choose what to do with half of the remaining hostages. She chose to free the boys, as she thought that they would be in the most danger if they remained and peace talks went south. After peace was established, she was returned back to Rome, and according to Livy, "The Romans rewarded the unprecedented courage shown by a woman by an unprecedented honour, namely an equestrian statue. On the highest part of the Sacred Way a statue was erected representing the maiden sitting on horseback."
Tarpeia: A daughter of a commander when Rome was fighting the Sabines (after the Romans kidnapped their women) She offered to let the Sabine soldiers into the citadel, in exchange for "what they bore on their left arms." She meant the jewelry they were wearing, but the soldiers instead tossed their shields onto her, crushing her to death. Her body was tossed off of a cliff, which was later named the Tarpeian Rock and used as a way to execute certain criminals (mainly murderers and traitors)
Lucretia: (tw for rape and suicide) Several men, returning from battle, make a bet as to who has the most virtuous wife, and go to see each woman to compare them. They find the other wives drinking and gossiping, but Lucretia is sitting alone and spinning wool. Everyone agrees that Lucretia is the best. Later, one of them, the prince Sextus Tarquinius, breaks into her bedroom at night and rapes her, threatening to murder her and a slave to make it look like Lucretia was having an affair with a slave if Lucretia resists. The next day, she calls her father and husband and tells them that she was raped by Sextus, demands that they avenge her, and commits suicide by stabbing herself in the heart. The Romans were so outraged by what had happened that they rebelled against the monarchy, drove the Tarquins out, and established the republic.
Rhea Silvia: Mother of Remus and Romulus. Daughter of the king of Alba Longa, and forced to become a Vestal Virgin when her uncle seized the throne. She became pregnant by the god Mars. Because Vestals were supposed to remain virgins, she was imprisoned and her children sentenced to death. The servant tasked with killing Remus and Romulus took pity and instead left them on the banks of the Tiber, where they were discovered by a she-wolf.
The She-Wolf: Fuck it, she counts! The wolf that found Remus and Romulus and nursed them counts!
Cornelia:
Mother of the Gracchi brothers! Highly intelligent and influential woman who educated her sons and helped shape their political careers. OG Roman MILF
Clodia
Catullus' "Lesbia" Wealthy and highly educated woman who had a talent for poetry (none survives :( ) Cicero hated her and called her "the Medea of the Palatine" (huge W for Clodia) Known for taking many lovers and accused of incest with her own brother (Catullus did not take the breakup well)
Fulvia
The first (real) woman to appear on Roman coinage. Married to Marc Antony (her third husband) and very involved in politics. Cassius Dio wrote "the following year Publius Servilius and Lucius Antonius nominally became consuls, but in reality it was Antonius and Fulvia. She, the mother-in‑law of Octavian and wife of Antony, had no respect for Lepidus because of his slothfulness, and managed affairs herself, so that neither the senate nor the people transacted any business contrary to her pleasure." Plutarch wrote "Fulvia wished to rule a ruler and command a commander and she schooled Antony to obey women." (marc antony is into femdom he's just like me fr fr) Acted as both a political and military leader.
Agrippina the Younger:
One of the most powerful of the Julio-Claudian women and a big influence on behind the scenes politics. Mother of Nero by her first husband. Was exiled for a conspiracy to assassinate her brother Caligula, but later returned. May have poisoned her second husband in order to marry the Emperor Claudius. She was the one to convince Claudius to name Nero heir, instead of Claudius' own son. May have poisoned Claudius in order to make Nero emperor. Ruthless, ambitious, and domineering #girlboss. Fave moment was when Nero engineered a boat designed to sink specifically to assassinate her. She swam to shore, realized her shitty son had tried to kill her (again), and wrote a letter to him letting him know that she had survived a terrible accident by divine fortune.
Messelina
Third wife of Claudius and hugely influential, directly responsible for the execution of several people and tried to get young Nero assassinated so that her own son would have the throne. Hated Agrippina for obvious reasons. Executed for a conspiracy to assassinate Claudius. Pliny wrote a famous (and certainly fake) story of her challenging a famous prostitute to see who could sleep with the most men in one night. (Messalina won at 25)
Julia the Elder:
Augustus once famously remarked that he had two difficult daughters: Rome and Julia. Married off by her father several times, all for political reasons. Clashed with her controlling father on many occasions about her spending, behavior, etc. Augustus passed laws making adultery a crime and then had to exile her for adultery (after killing and exiling her lovers) She was popular with the Roman people, who petitioned for her recall from exile, and was known for her kindness, intelligence, and wit. She never returned to Rome, and died in exile.
Livia:
Wife of Augustus and first Roman empress. One of, if not the, the most powerful and influential women in the early Roman Empire. iirc she was the first woman to be deified. Cassius Dio wrote "Livia was destined to hold in her lap even Caesar's power and to dominate him in everything."
Hortensia
A skilled orator, best known for her public speech given in the forum in protest of a tax put on women to fund the civil war after the assassination of Caesar. She was successful, reducing the number of women taxed down to 400, with new taxes on men being levied to make up the difference. (Using this image of a fresco from Pompeii because there's, surprisingly, no art I can find of her from a google search)
Empress Theodora
Byzantine empress. She was the daughter of a bear trainer and an actress, and worked as an actress and prostitute in her youth. Married the Emperor Justinian and became his advisor, preforming jobs that were usually only done by the emperor (receiving envoys and corresponding with foreign rulers) and helped pass laws for women's rights.
#long post#there are variations for the stories of the mythical women like all myths#but like. generally. that's the gist.#also i forgo how cool locusta was#no more pictures bc the post is too long

Trinidadian comedian uses humour to say gender-based violence isn't funny
‘It is important to [see] women as equals, worthy of respect’
Rhea-Simone Auguste, better known as the comedian Simmy De Trini. Photograph courtesy Auguste, used with permission. Photo credit: Mark Lyndersay for www.causeaneffect.co
Trinidad and Tobago, which has been grappling with increasing cases of gender-based violence and femicide, is still reeling over the murder of teenager Ashanti Riley, who was stabbed to death after being abducted by the driver of a private hire (PH) taxi on November 29. Since then, online discussion has been rife over the tendency to victim-blame and put the onus on women to protect themselves, as opposed to focusing on changing the culture and socialisation of men. One comedian decided to start pushing for that shift to happen in a rather unconventional way. On Facebook, Rhea-Simone Auguste, better known as Simmy De Trini, has published a series of scenarios, presented in local parlance, that play as reverse sexual harassment. The impact of this unexpected role reversal has emphasised the absurdity of what women are made to endure in the hyper-masculine Caribbean culture. Via WhatsApp, Simmy chatted with Global Voices about the gravity of gender-based violence and why she believes that humour is a good way to jump-start productive public discussion on the issue. Janine Mendes-Franco (JMF): Was this series inspired by the most recent spate of femicides or is this a theme you have been mulling over for a while now?
Simmy De Trini (SDT): As a survivor of both domestic violence and rape, I have been vocal over the last few years about the injustice women face and the inability of our current system to protect women from harm or worse, murder. The “reverse harassment” posts were not planned. I just got fed up of saying the same things so I switched it up and just started doing sarcastic posts about the situation.
JMF: Each of your instalments has attracted hundreds of likes, comments and shares. What kind of discussion did you want to get going?
SDT: When I realised the first post started gaining traction, the others were done with the hope of sparking discussions about the harassment women experience and the kind of attitudes we encounter that we need men to revisit and review in themselves and their friends.
JMF: Some people seem to be missing the point though.
SDT: The people who did not get it were in the minority and did not have an impact on me continuing. I felt like more people understood where I was coming from so I did not hesitate to keep sharing the posts.
JMF: How disturbing is it to you that most women can identify with some measure of what you speak about in these scenarios?
SDT: Very disturbing but not surprising. In conversations with friends, I have heard so many women talk about these situations with men that I already knew many others would have similar experiences and stories.
JMF: Tell us about your journey to becoming a comedian. Your brand of humour always seems to address serious issues by presenting truths in non-threatening ways. Why is this important to you, and as a woman in what remains a macho society, do you feel a responsibility to provoke thought to a greater degree than a male comedian might?
SDT: I started doing stand-up in 2017, as a creative outlet to help me cope and explore topics that had affected or impacted my life. I have some superficial stuff mixed in but try to explore aspects of mental health and domestic violence prevention and abuse when I can. I don't think much about it in terms of a responsibility but hope my messages sink in for those who can relate.
JMF: How do you tap into this ability to place yourself in the midst of an issue, yet find a way to witness the injustice through laughter?
SDT: I really don't overthink things. If something is going on that I want to talk about, I just do it spur of the moment and from my perspective.
JMF: Is there a difference between Simmy the Trini and Rhea-Simone? How do you draw the line?
SDT: Huge difference. Simmy is a stage name and a different personality. Simmy is loud and funny and all about the public life. Rhea-Simone [is] who I am as a person. I am a loner and like to be in quiet spaces where I can hear my own thoughts. People are usually surprised when they meet me and realise that Simmy can be “turned off,” and that I am mostly serious and able to speak on a range of topics that are not necessarily funny, but hold importance. That's why aside from comedy, I have been trying to do more public speaking and motivational speaking engagements because I enjoy talking to people in different settings.
JMF: You’re the mother of two boys. How is your work teaching them to change what seems to be a pervasive objectification of women in Trinidad and Tobago?
SDT: My sons are being raised to respect and value women. The women around me and by extension them are usually strong, vocal and from different walks of life. It is important to me that they grow up seeing women as equals and worthy of respect.
JMF: What do you want this series to accomplish?
SDT: More dialogue about what we have come to accept as the norm — but in reality is a degradation and devaluing of women — leading to these instances of violence, abuse, harassment or murder.
JMF: How do you think we can begin to solve the problem of gender-based violence?
SDT: Just as there is a sexual offenders registry, we need to have a domestic violence registry for repeat offenders. If you check the background of some of the men who end up murdering a woman in a domestic violence scenario, they sometimes have a clear history and pattern and it was escalating. Counselling for both victims and abusers is necessary to help people with anger management and conflict resolution techniques and strategies. Education is important too. I would love to see a full campaign in the public space that shows a no tolerance aspect for abuse and violence against women.
JMF: What role has social media played when it comes to sharing and promoting your work?
SDT: Facebook, in particular, has been important as it has allowed me to grow a following for my work and opened doors for me to get more work not just as a comedian but as a self-employed journalist and content creator.
JMF: Who have been your greatest influences?
SDT: My mom. My sons. Professionally, as a writer, I was trained by and worked with [journalists] Keith Smith, Deborah John and Angela Martin. In terms of comedy, Wanda Sykes — and I hope to work with her one day.
JMF: Imagine you’re doing a show and your audience is only men. What would you say to them, all jokes aside?
SDT: Women are important to the very fabric of our society. You stand to benefit when you see our value, our contributions and our worth.

But how does my silence give you the right to tell me that you will get me RAPED and MURDERED if I don’t commit suicide @mannu_raaut? Do you realize the seriousness of what you have said? These are crimes, and by law no one, I repeat NO ONE should be subjected to this kind of toxicity and harassment. I request @cyber_crime_helpline @cybercrimeindia to please take necessary action.
