Swivelling the watch case to its reverse side reveals a magnificent tiger. Engraved into the pink gold case metal, it seems to leap out from its background of black opaque Grand Feu enamel, the polished surface of the tiger’s coat and the contrasting rhodium-brushed texture of its stripes catching and refracting the light to create the illusion of movement and power. To maximise the sense of volume and bring depth to the engraving, the artisan engraver used a technique called modelled engraving, using differently sized chisels to sculpt the metal step by step – a precise and exacting task that requires absolute focus and remarkable dexterity. Adding to the challenge of creating this interpretation of the Reverso Tribute Enamel, the engraver’s work began not, as is usual, with a bare metal surface but with one that already had its coat of Grand Feu enamel. An unprecedented accuracy of gesture is necessary in order to avoid all risk of damage to the pristine enamel, and the engraver devoted 55 working hours to the creation of this masterpiece. The dial of the Reverso Tribute Enamel features the same opaque black Grand Feu enamel as the case back. The elegant simplicity of the Reverso Tribute dial, with its faceted appliqué hour-markers, chemin de fer minutes track, and Dauphine hands – in this case, perfectly matched to the pink gold of the case – places full value on the subtle beauty of the glowing black background. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZUdOmVLyKP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Enamelling – a rich tradition at Jaeger-LeCoultre The art of enamelling has a long history at La Grande Maison, dating back to the pocket watches of the 1890s. The first known Reverso with an enamelled case back is a model commissioned by a client in 1936, featuring a delicately detailed portrait of who is thought to be a Maharani on the reverse side. Having established its own in-house enamelling atelier in the 1990s – to this day, one of the very few Manufactures to have done so – Jaeger-LeCoultre began in 1996 to reproduce the works of major artists from Europe and Asia on the tiny scale of the Reverso case back. To reproduce a painting in enamel on the case back of a watch presents several challenges. The enameller’s skill as a draftsman must not only be equal to that of the original artist but must also be reduced to a tiny scale. What’s more, colour must be controlled so as to exactly match the original work of art – and yet, the nature of enamel pigment means that the outcome after firing cannot be exactly predicted. It is a question of the artisan’s judgement, based on many years of experience. The Courbet and Van Gogh works reproduced for the Reverso Tribute Enamel Hidden Treasures pose a particular challenge: both artists used a heavy impasto, whereby paint is applied so thickly that it is raised above the surface of the canvas. Because this technique of course cannot be duplicated with enamel, the enamellist had to create an illusion of the technique. On the other hand, the luminescent quality of grand feu enamel gives it a particular advantage over oil on canvas: tilting an enamelled surface to catch the light reveals unexpected depth and nuances. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWG8mEFL3-7/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Reverso Tribute collection is closest in its stylistic details to the 1930s originals, and in these three new watches, the signature simplicity of their dials enhances the subtle beauty of the guilloché backgrounds. The colour of each dial – a different shade of misty blue or green – hints at the colours of the enamelled treasures hidden on the reverse side, while the restrained design contrasts with the richness and detail of the miniature works of art. The three paintings reproduced in the Reverso Tribute Enamel Hidden Treasures triptych represent three markers of a major watershed in the Western artistic tradition, from the 19th-Century Realism of Courbet, to Van Gogh’s Post-Impressionism, to the expressive and experimental spirit of Klimt and the Viennese Secession. To honour the Reverso’s unique ability to hide or reveal the artistic treasure created on its reverse side, the Manufacture’s researchers identified three beautiful paintings that had been hidden from the world for many decades – assumed to have been lost for ever until rediscovered and authenticated in recent years. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWG7bbpLSx9/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Master Ultra Thin charms any watch-enthusiast or devotee with its round shape and pure lines. Featuring an extremely thin case, this models highlights the arts of guillochage and enamelling, two of the Rare Handcrafts (“Métiers Rares®”) which have been kept alive for generations at the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux. Jaeger-LeCoultre remains one of the few Manufactures offering gem-setting, engraving, guillochage and enamelling at its workshops, artistic techniques that require delicate and subtle work, typically done by hand and with the assistance of machines, more often than not, over a hundred years old. This year, technical and artistic precision takes on a new dimension. The Art of Precision stands out as the signature of Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The guilloché enamel exteriors of this new Master Ultra Thin Enamel model is a testament to precision and sophistication, where blue is featured in all its majesty – a deep, intense midnight blue which achieves perfect harmony with the case of this limited edition.
  Master Ultra Thin Moon Enamel
Issued in a limited series of 100 pieces, the new Master Ultra Thin Moon Enamel proudly expresses its character in a pure and refined watchmaking style, which translates directly into a new hand-guilloché blue enamel dial, new hour-markers, a new polished moon, and a new engraved counter. Its extremely thin case in white gold (10.04 mm) conceals its engine, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 925, an automatic mechanical movement with a 70-hour power reserve.
A hand-guilloché blue enamel dial
The elegance of the new Master Ultra Thin Moon Enamel comes down to the assertive character of its guilloché blue enamel dial. This deep captivating blue brings to light the geometric motifs and the relief effect characteristic of guillochage, a traditional decorative technique more fashionable than ever. Enamelling, this age-old expertise, was reinstated at the Manufacture in 1996. Executed completely by hand by a few artisans trained at the Manufacture, enamelling requires extreme concentration and infinite patience. Furthermore, performing the guillochage work and the application of the translucent blue enamel layer requires an incomparable level of meticulous attention.
A new polished moon phase
The Master Ultra Thin Moon Enamel features a new moon phase setting, one that has been redesigned with painstaking attention to detail. When the moon is full, its perfectly round and polished white disk comes to rest on an exquisite stellar background.
A new take on hour-markers and an engraved counter
In addition to the unmistakable presence of the polished moon phase, this limited edition of 100 pieces skillfully revisits the standards of the Master Ultra Thin, a line that has been a watchmaking classic for over 20 years. Connoisseurs are sure to notice the new design of the hour-markers, which are longer and split into two at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. In an aperture at 6 o’clock, the counter that houses the polished moon phase has been engraved, a way of bringing out the numerals depicting the date. Visually, the effect is one that combines presence and discretion.
An emblematic piece that showcases the expertise of the Jaeger-LeCoultre master watchmakers, artists and artisans, who have ceaselessly reinvented mechanical precision, all while combining it with peerless artistic creativity.

The Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to be one of the few watchmaking Manufactures to master the arts of enamelling and hand-engraving. To showcase its Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares”, the Grande Maison has given three new faces to its Reverso watches, displaying famous artworks crafted with remarkable skill by its master artisans – Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Enamel Alfons Mucha.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has long maintained an ardent interest in painting and art history. The Reverso Tribute Enamel collection pays homage to the illustrious painters who share the values of the Grande Maison. Each Reverso Tribute Enamel watch has been crafted by our artisans to offer a front dial finely guilloché by hand and covered with translucent Grand Feu enamel, twinned with a reverse face featuring an enamelled miniature of a painting inspired by a great painter that is as Alfons Mucha.
For this collection, Jaeger-LeCoultre has drawn inspiration from “The Seasons”, the artist’s emblematic 1896 series of decorative panels, to decorate three different models of the Reverso Tribute Enamel—each in a limited series of eight pieces.

Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso “Spring” Q39314M2
Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso “Spring” Q39314M2
A challenge to our savoir-faire
The front face of each watch has been worked in guilloché of remarkable quality. Finely crafted by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s master engraver, this guilloché requires extremely complex artisanal skills and a machine that dates back a hundred years. On this face, a sunburst guilloché appears in relief under the deep colour of its transparent enamelling. Each colour required hours of research to achieve its perfectly even hue and to ensure it harmonizes with the colours of the painting reproduced on the reverse of the case.
When the watch is turned over, a veritable masterpiece reveals itself on the caseback.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares” master enameler faces multiple challenges in creating each of the three miniatures that feature on the reverse.
Much of the complexity lies in working by hand to scale the original painting—measuring over a meter—onto a surface of 3 cm2, during the very process of enamelling.
The reproduction needs are as faithful as possible, but using different tools and materials from the ones Mucha used. For instance, the master enameler must painstakingly seek to reproduce the Czech artist’s rich palette, despite having only a restricted number of colours to work with.
Another challenge is the need to anticipate what colour the result will be, and employ darker shades than the original because the various protective layers that are applied subsequently over the design will alter the painting’s colour intensity.
In the miniature inspired by “Spring”, Mucha captures the very atmosphere of this season, personifying it in an innocent fair-haired figure wearing a translucent white dress and standing under a blossoming tree. It took meticulous research and many trials to reproduce the fluid lines of her dress because the protective coats of enamel hinder some of the spontaneity of this design. The same painstaking attention went into creating even the tiniest details, like the white flowers she wears in her hair, the little birds, and the background, which is itself very rich in detail. An additional difficulty for the enameler was reproducing the monochrome dress, a craft known for its play on multiple colours.
A frame that was engraved and sculpted entirely by hand also surrounds the miniature on each model. Using a special chisel, the master engraver created the design by hollowing out the material. This is an incredibly difficult task because the engraving is executed after the enamelling. So the engraver must sculpt around the miniature without altering it, before decorating the case with exquisitely delicate details. It is an operation that requires enormous finesse.
This exceptional piece will have required more than a 100 hours of work (70 hours of enamelling and 30 hours of engraving) in order to reproduce the master’s artwork as faithfully as possible.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso “Summer” Q39334M1
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso “Summer” Q39334M1
The process of Grand Feu miniature enamelling
Before starting to paint, the enameler analyzes the original artwork and resizes it, so it fits the dimensions of the Reverso case. Then, a white enamel base is applied several times to the hollowed-out surface of the gold Reverso case. The piece is placed in the oven at 800°C (Grand Feu means “Big Fire”) so the enamel melts onto the gold. Just as a painter works on a blank canvas, the enameler creates an outline of the design on this white surface.
To achieve the right colours and desired image, successive layers of oxides are applied on so their gorgeous design gradually discloses itself. Repeated firings are carried out between the application of each layer. The final color is only revealed after firing, which means the enamel artist must have perfect mastery of the color palette and be able to anticipate the end result—the color that will become fixed at 800°C.
The last stage is to protect the miniature by applying six to eight layers of protective coating, firing it between layers. This technique is called the “Geneva Technique”. All in all, a minimum of 15 firings are required—and sometimes even more.
Before assembling the Reverso case, the enameler will lap and polish the enamel and gold by hand to restore their full shine.
Grand Feu enamel is the most difficult and delicate technique to execute. It requires years of experience and, above all, tremendous patience and meticulousness. To create such masterpieces as these, enamelers must draw on all their senses.

About Alfons Mucha
Internationally celebrated Czech artist Mucha is inextricably associated with the image of the 1900 Paris. He is best known for his distinctive stylized theatrical posters that epitomize Art Nouveau. Alfons Mucha has often inspired Jaeger-LeCoultre’s creativity—leading to the Reverso “The Seasons” in 1996, Reverso “Precious Gemstones” in 1999, and Reverso “Clair de Lune” in 2001. “The Seasons” (1896) was one of Mucha’s earliest decorative panels and became one of his most popular series.
As well as being a great poster artist, Mucha was also a visionary; an exhibition tracing his story is on at the Musée du Luxembourg until January 27, 2019.
