A Florida community is mourning the loss of one of their young deputies who died after contracting COVID-19 on the job, just months before he was set to wed his partner.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced on Saturday that Deputy Shannon Bennett, 39, had passed away following a nearly two-week battle with coronavirus.

“Deputy Bennett served BSO for more than 12 years and was a fine deputy and individual,” the department wrote on their social media accounts of the Fort Lauderdale first responder, who died from the contagious illness on Friday night.

In addition to being a longtime veteran of the department, the BSO said Shannon was “an out and proud gay law enforcement deputy; a school resource officer who protected and mentored the young students at Deerfield Beach Elementary; a man in love to be wedded later this year.”

“We love and will miss you, Deputy Bennett,” the BSO added. “Thank you for your bravery, your kind heart, and your service. Rest In Peace.”

Speaking at a press conference on April 4, Sheriff Gregory Tony explained that Shannon first started feeling ill on March 23 while “in the line of duty.” The following day, Tony said Shannon went to the hospital, where he tested positive for COVID-19.

The deputy was admitted three days later and remained under their care — even recently “showing signs of recovery” — until things sadly “took a turn for the worse” on April 3, according to the Sheriff.

“This is a reminder — to not only this community but us as first responders — that we’re on the front lines with this,” Tony said. “This is a new enemy we can’t even see. We know it’s there and real and it’s impacting all of us.”

“We lose Shannon today but we’re gonna keep fighting this battle,” Tony continued. “We’re not about to throw in any towel. And if you truly support us, then take heed to all the warnings that have been provided across this planet.”

Shannon was one of 21 BSO employees who tested positive for the virus, according to Tony. Currently, there are 20 other deputies in self-isolation following their colleague’s death.

At this time, it is unclear whether Shannon had been living with underlying health conditions. A spokesperson for BSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

During his tenure at the department, Tony said Shannon was passionate about the impact he left on his community, especially with causes that were near and dear to his heart.

“He was part of the LGBTQ community. He wanted to see a committee formed here at this agency and we put it together,” Tony explained. “And he sat with members of our organization to figure out ways to better bond this network inside this community and he wanted to extend out to the entire Broward County community.”

“This is his vision, it’s the vision of the entire committee,” he added.

Friends of the deputy told WPLG that Shannon parked his patrol car outside of bars and restaurants in the Wilton Manors neighborhood following the 2016 PULSE nightclub shooting in an effort to protect them from another senseless tragedy.

“ ‘No one is going to mess with my friends,'” they told the outlet. “That was the type of person he was.”

Shannon’s death also comes eight months before he was set to tie the knot with his fiancé Jonathan Frey on December 11, according to a post on the deputy’s Facebook.

He and Frey set the date in February and excitedly shared the news with a sweet photo of them sitting together, showing off their rings.

In the wake of his death, many of Shannon’s loved ones have expressed their heartbreak.

His brother Darren Bennett wrote several touching posts on Facebook, noting how he felt “empty,” especially because he couldn’t be by his sibling’s side in his final moments.

“Bro I’m empty and I feel like I can’t breathe…you were my twin. My ride or die! I can’t even function right now!” Darren wrote beside several photos of the pair together. “I love you sooo much man! I can’t believe I’m even posting this!”

“You fought a damn good fight and your legacy WILL LIVE ON! I got it from here bro. Deputy S Bennett take a bow,” he went on. “To everyone else…please don’t take covid19 lightly STAY AT HOME!”

“My brother…….I COULDN’T EVEN BE THERE WITH YOU!!! I would’ve never left your side. Damn COVID19!!!!” he added in another post.

Darren also shared some heartwrenching, final text message exchanges with his brother, who said he felt like his “life is almost over” and asked that his legacy of supporting his family live on if he died.

On YouTube, Shannon’s niece Jessie Bennett remembered her uncle by making an emotional video with photos and videos of the deputy.

Below Deck star Josiah Carter also expressed his devastation about the “terrible virus” taking “one of my young healthy friends” in a post on Instagram, writing, “Words really cannot describe how I feel about this news.”

“I met Shannon only 4 years ago and we instantly became friends. He was one of the first people I met when I moved to Fort Lauderdale for work,” Carter continued. “He was like a big brother to me, with no agenda just kindness and thoughtfulness, he guided me and reassured me that everything would be okay.”

“Shannon always seemed to look out for others and cared for everyone, such a selfless person,” he added.

On April 4, Shannon’s colleagues showed their respect for him by lining the streets and saluting as his body was escorted from the hospital to a local funeral home. Photographs shared by the BSO on their Facebook captured the emotional moment.

“The BSO family always stands together, bound by the service we provide to others. We thank Deputy Bennett for his service, today and always. We will never forget your sacrifice,” they wrote.

Community members also paid tribute to the fallen officer by leaving gifts and signs on Shannon’s patrol vehicle in the neighborhood where he lived “to show how much he was loved.”

“‘We wanted to share our message with everyone,’ one neighbor said. ‘He turned his lights on for our little 18-month old son one day and made him smile,'” the post read. “Rest In Peace, Deputy Bennett. Thank you for your service.”

As of Monday, there have been at least 357,036 cases and 10,522 deaths attributed to coronavirus in the United States, according to the New York Times. In Florida, at least 13,316 cases and 235 deaths have been reported, according to the outlet.

Will watching the ghost angel’s grieving best friend mourn the loss of the angel he’d loved spur Dean into confessing his own feelings before it’s too late? Will an angel from Cas’s past be able to succeed where Ishim failed? Who the hell has Sam been texting? Will someone please tell Mary what the hell is going on with her sons? Will any of Team Free Will learn to use their damn words?

'This week, it's going to get bad,' U.S. surgeon general warns America

The war against coronavirus has intensified across the country as more workers are laid off, medical supplies dwindle, and states enact new rules to get Americans to stay home. “I want America to understand — this week, it’s going to get bad,” US Surgeon General Jerome Adams told NBC’s “Today” show Monday.

“We really, really need everyone to stay at home. I think that there are a lot of people who are doing the right things, but … we’re finding out a lot of people think this can’t happen to them.”

More than 40,000 Americans have been infected with coronavirus across all 50 states, and at least 472 people have died.

Michigan joined a growing number of states ordering people to stay home, with a few exceptions. Massachusetts is demanding all nonessential businesses shut down their physical workplaces.

“If we do nothing, cases will increase fivefold,” said Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun of the Michigan Department of Health.

The federal government has activated the US National Guard in three of the hardest hit states — California, Washington and New York. Almost half all US cases — 20,875 — are in New York state.

President Donald Trump said National Guard units deployed to California, Washington state and New York will remain in the command of those governors.

The deployment comes as more than 100 million people in at least eight states face orders from their governors to stay home.

It’s part of the attempt to control the deadly virus and prevent a catastrophic overload of the US healthcare system.

‘A point where people can’t be saved’

Medical workers from coast to coast say they’re facing dire shortage of masks, ventilators and staff as more doctors and nurses also fall sick.

New York City’s 11 public hospitals will only be able to get through this week before they start reaching “a point where people can’t be saved,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday.

“I literally want to see hundreds of ventilators. I want to see first hundreds of thousands and millions of masks,” de Blasio said.

“If we don’t get ventilators this week, we are going to start losing lives we could have saved.”

Many are calling for Trump to fully use the Defense Production Act to ensure the necessary supply of medical equipment.

The 1950 law gives the president the ability to force factories to produce key equipment and allocate resources where they are needed. President Trump invoked the bill last week, but said he does not plan to use it.

On Monday, Sens. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Brian Schatz of Hawaii are introducing a bill to require the president to fully use the Defense Production Act.

The bill would require the President to ensure the production of at least 500 million N95 respirators, 200,000 ventilators, 20 million face shields, 500 million pairs of medical gloves and 20 million surgical gowns.

Even GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, said the US needs to go “all in” with increasing medical supplies.

“Anything that can provide relief to the frontline troops, do it,” the South Carolina senator said. “Be all in on the medical supply front.”

Since hospitals are about to get overwhelmed, authorities are redoubling efforts to get the public to stay home — especially since coronavirus is easily transmitted between people who don’t even know they have it.

Stricter rules go into effect as people ignore social distancing orders

Americans should stay at least 6 feet away from others and avoid crowds, health officials say. Yet people keep ignoring that guidance.

Sun worshipers have been flocking to beaches. Young people have been gathering at parks as many schools are now closed.

So more states are enacting strict stay-at-home orders. California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey were already practicing them over the weekend.

Ohio, Louisiana and Connecticut joined that list Monday.

And similar orders will go into effect Tuesday in Delaware and Michigan.

The orders say residents must stay home, with few exceptions such as grocery shopping, getting medicine and going to work at an essential job.

People can still go outside and be active, as long as they stay at a healthy distance from others.

Violating the orders could result in fines in states like New York and Connecticut.

“There will be a civil fine and mandatory closure for any business that is not in compliance,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

And Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker ordered all nonessential businesses to shut down their physical workplaces from noon Tuesday until April 7. Those employees can still work from home.

Restaurants and bars can still sell food, but only as takeout.

Massachusetts is also banning gatherings over 10 people “a reduction from the 25-person limit established in an earlier order,” Baker’s office said.

More drive-thru testing becomes available

While testing has become more available, there are still challenges — and increased strain on the healthcare system.

About 254,000 Americans have been tested, Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday. That total does not include local hospitals or local health care labs, he said.

But increasing testing has put pressure on dwindling medical supplies and increased the possibility of exposure in medical facilities.

In some places, authorities have decided to test only high-risk patients or those whose results would significantly change the course of treatment.

While the US plays catchup with widespread testing shortages and delays, cities are getting creative in helping expedite testing.

The city of Los Angeles is implementing a new web portal that would direct those who might be at highest risk to a testing center.

In Chicago, two Walmart center parking lots are being designated as drive-thru testing sites.

And a new drive-up testing facility in Miami will give health care workers and first responders priority testing, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

More outbreaks in nursing homes

While more evidence shows young adults can become seriously ill from coronavirus, the elderly are especially vulnerable.

That’s why new outbreaks in nursing homes have families riddled with anxiety.

Seven nursing homes across Arkansas have reported cases, state Department of Health Secretary Dr. Nate Smith said.

At least 41 cases are linked to Briarwood Nursing Home in Little Rock, Smith said. Residents accounted for 35 of those cases, and staff members for six.

In Broward County, Florida, at least three people from the Atria Willow Wood facility have died from coronavirus. Seven other people have tested positive, Senior Vice President of Care Mike Gentry said.

Gov. DeSantis said the Florida facility did not take precautions against the virus, allowing staff who hadn’t been screened for symptoms to freely enter the building. But Atria disputed the governor’s claims.

In New Orleans, at least seven deaths and 24 confirmed cases are linked to the Lambeth House retirement community, said Dr. Alexander Billioux, Louisiana assistant secretary of health. Seven other facilities in Lousiana have reported cases, he said.

The first known nursing home outbreak was at the Life Care Center in Kirkland, Washington. The center is linked to 35 deaths from coronavirus.

Retired Army Sergeant Wants to Build Homes for Veterans

As South Florida and the rest of the country honors veterans Monday, one retired U.S. Army Sergeant-turned-realtor is making sure no veteran ends up homeless.

South Florida is now one of the top places in the U.S. for those coming off military service to settle. Many smoothly transition to civilian life, but for others, the stress of combat can lead to trouble.

Broward County said it's spending $600,000 a year to help veterans, while Miami-Dade is spending about $300,000 to help 1,000 vets in a variety of ways.

Enter Josef Barmoha.

Barmoha left South Florida to be an Army mechanic when he was in his teens. Now, he's back and has launched his nonprofit to address the trouble with veterans who are homeless or unable to afford a mortgage.

"So, as a veteran leaving the service knowing that that's the world we live in —the pain and suffering we had to deal with in a good way and in a bad way of course — we now have a home we can give to veterans that we can create mortgage free," Barmoha said.

Josef figured using containers to provide homes is the most efficient way to go. Most times the containers are seen on ships or on a truck. The name "Foxhole Command" has a special place for soldiers.

"A Foxhole, as you know, is when we are in a deployment status, we build a foxhole. That is our sectors of fire where we sleep, we eat," Barmoha said. "So, Foxhole Command is more so to save a life — give another life, another chance for veterans to do something good with themselves — create a family."

Barmoha said they can be adapted to fit the needs and wants of the veteran.

The vets who get a container home will also obtain a steady job — one that will help coordinate the next veteran selected and provides job skills working with contractors.

"At the same time we are providing an actual employment to the veteran," Barmoha said. "So, we are not only giving them a home."

Barmoha said he is working with county and local governments to obtain the land that's needed. Private developers and land owners are also in the mix when it comes to finding the property. The homes will be energy efficient, provide solar energy, and can withstand a Category 5 storm and beyond.

"The first home is planned and scheduled to be built in January," Barmoha said.

Key West 61 degrees as I write. High today 65.

The mid west experiencing the coldest weather in 20 years. Heading for New York and New England. It has been predicted that on wednesday the wind chill in the mid west will be minus 50-60 degrees. Killer weather!

Cuba had a tornado last night. Three dead, 174 injured. Pictures on the internet this morning show Irma type damage.

South Florida’s Broward and Miami-Dade Counties had tornado warnings out for 8 last night. Reports indicate nothing big. A tornado touched down in the west end of Hialeah.

Except for the snow storm, heavy rains continue to occur every where else mentioned.

Memories. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow was put to music and lyric in 1945. Vaughn Monroe made the first record. I recall his version. He had a baritone voice peculiar only to himself.

The record was a hit. Others recorded the tune also. Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Dean Martin.

My back pain continues. Better, though. Pills terrific. Too good. I am napping constantly.

Stayed in again last night. Cannot drink with the medication being taken. I would really fly!

Watched the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Alan Alda received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

When I think of Alda, I think of MASH. He starred in the TV show for 11 years. A magnificent actor!

He got old. We all get old. I can sympathize with him. He is now 90. Has some white hair. His left arm shakes constantly. Some things have remained constant. His beaming eyes and sense of humor.

Money laundering a big time enterprise the past several years. Especially oil money coming from Russia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. The oligarchs need to dispose of their gains.

Those seeking to launder/free up their cash have been purchasing high end properties in expensive cities. Since money is no object, laundering causes real estate prices to rise dramatically. Real estate costs zoom up. As a result, repurchase prices and rents become high. Unreasonably so.

I ask simply whether the money laundering oligarchs have discovered Key West? Real estate prices are going through the roof!

We forget our people. The “we” being the federal government, especially under Trump.

We fail the victims of natural disasters. Especially hurricane and fire victims. We ignore their plight.

Corporations generally give significant dollars to disaster areas. Corporate America has failed to do so with the Panhandle victims of Hurricane Michael.

Surprising since Michael has been rated the third worse hurricane in U.S. recorded history.

It has been suggested the corporations are not giving as they normally do because the Panhandle is a conglomeration of little communities. The feeling is small communities do not provide sufficient bang public relations wise.

There it is. The federal government is not sufficiently providing nor is corporate America. As a result, the people of the Panhandle continue to suffer.

At least half of Morning Joe shows are being delivered from 2 locations. NBC in New York City and Joe Scarborough’s home in Jupiter, Florida.

For tax reasons, Scarborough is using his home as a studio and transmitting from Jupiter. The White House background merely a partial picture of the White House. Guests continue to transmit from New York City.

The marvels of modern science.

Don’t know what Mika is doing.

Again, Scarborough found it advantageous to do the show from Jupiter for tax reasons. It is believed he earns $8 million a year. His former residence Connecticut has a State tax of 6.99 percent. Florida has no state tax.

Scarborough changed his residence from Connecticut to Florida. He must also spend 183 days in Florida. His tax savings by so doing $550,000.

Not a tax dodge. Perfectly legal. Many have retired to Florida because of the no state tax benefit.

NBC has agreed to the arrangement. It will find it non-acceptable should Morning Joe’s ratings go down.

A Modest Proposal for South Florida

The expansion of the I-95 express lane has taken a toll on South Florida. The lane originally ranged from Miami Beach to Ives Dairy Rd but recently the Florida Government has furthered the lane to Davie Blvd on the Northbound and SW 24th St on the Southbound. Where the environmentally supportive HOV (carpool) lane once stood, is now a line of bright orange poles that are far too neon for their own good. An eyesore if you will, that is quite distracting to most drivers. Not to mention the pins that are struck by swerving cars or the poor souls that don’t manage to merge out of the leftmost lane in time.

Furthermore, the express lane has produced significantly more traffic than there normally is on the highway. This is due to the loss of the HOV lane and the merging complications. The HOV lane provided a faster way for carpools to reach their destination since fewer cars were in the lane so it moved at a quicker pace than the others. The lane, therefore, motivated drivers to travel with carpools rather than each person separately, saving gas and diminishing the South Florida annual pollution rate by 1.7%. In the absence of the HOV lane, traffic has been heightened since there is no longer an incentive to carpool, increasing the number of cars on the highway and congesting the lanes. Additionally, the entrances and exits of the express lane force all the cars in the leftmost lane to change to a middle lane and the cars in middle or rightmost lanes to change towards the leftmost lane. Excessive simultaneous lane changing is notorious for causing traffic since all the lanes are forced to slow down to allow the cars to enter and leave.

After much irritation over this matter, I’ve developed a solution that will enable the highway to return to normalcy. I would like to propose the addition of a rollercoaster system that runs directly above the highway with stops at each exit.

The tracks would be supported around the highway boundaries and structures would be built by each exit to allow entrance to the ride. The rollercoaster carts will be comprised of ten rows of two seats in each row. It will include tightly sealable compartments on the sides of each cart to store personal belongings. The seats would fashion waterproof cushions to add comfort to the short ride and a covering would be provided for the rainy days that South Florida is often witness to.

The addition of the rollercoaster would, of course, entail the removal of the express lane as the rollercoaster would be doing the same job more efficiently. The price of entrance would cost the same as the express lane, with an advance ticketing system that charges at each checkpoint that the lane once had. Modeled after the London Underground system, the RollerCard would be swiped at the entrance and exit where the machine would calculate how many checkpoints were passed along the trip and charge the card accordingly. At the exits, there will be Government mandated car services, ready to take the passenger anywhere, which would cost 40% less than the average taxi or Uber, plus tips. The use of these services should not be considered an expense for citizens since the price of the rollercoaster and the ride will be cheaper than the money they would be spending on gas.

I have already taken the authority of meeting with Werner Stengel, a world-renowned rollercoaster architect that has designed 500 rollercoasters, most recently the Maverick at Cedar Point Park in Ohio. Stengel claimed that the project would be quite easy to execute and despite his semi-retirement, he would be glad to sit down and sketch out a design. Moreover, in a poll taken in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach county 3/5 of the citizens are irritated with the express lanes and 7/9 of those citizens said they would take the rollercoaster if it were an option.

However, when I have suggested the proposal, there are three main claims of opposition that have arisen: the Turnpike’s existence, the expense of building and running the rollercoaster, and the motion sickness or fear that some citizens may have.

In relation to the issue of the Turnpike, people feel that since it is in existence it can be used as a replacement for the highway in the case of too much traffic. But, the Turnpike costs 0.53c per toll or 0.26c per toll and a $2.50 monthly fee, if you are signed up for a SunPass. This expense is on top of the price of maintaining a car and paying for its gas. While the Turnpike may be faster, the highway is free and the cost of the rollercoaster would remove the price of gas from the equation and cost less annually than taking the Turnpike every day to avoid the traffic that the express lane has produced.

As for the cost of building and running the rollercoaster, it is a highly worthy expense. The construction of the tracks would create numerous jobs, as would running it and providing a car service. The unemployment rate in Florida in currently 4.9% and the addition of this rollercoaster into our state would lower the rate. So, while it may be costly to build initially, the money invested by the State and its taxpayers will be returned to them via the stimulation of jobs, which would lead to greater consumerism amongst the people.

Finally, the complaint of motion sickness and fear of rollercoasters should not be considered an issue at all. With the removal of the express lane, the HOV lane will be reinstated so that there will be minimal traffic on the highway since there will now be the carpool lane and surely fewer people will be driving due to the benefits of riding the rollercoaster instead. Those who cannot ride will simply resume taking the highway as they did before, now with less traffic than ever. But for those who are opposed to the idea out of fear, I must tell you that there were 52 deaths due to rollercoasters from 1990-2004, only 14 per year, while in only 2013 there were 47 deaths by shark attack. So while there is no guarantee that you won't die riding the rollercoaster, you are much more likely to get killed by a shark.

As someone who has struggled due to the excessive highway traffic causing me to be late too many times, I am simply trying to help others who are in the same dreadful situation as I am. I hope that the citizens of South Florida can work together to push this proposal into action. The rollercoaster will help traffic, the economy, and the unemployment rate, but, most importantly, it’ll be fun.

CANTLON'S CORNER: WOLF PACK OFF-SEASON VOLUME 12

BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings.net HARTFORD, CT - Professional teams at all levels, all-around hockey had best hope they run short of pens, because this was a week that saw a great deal of movement. It starts in Hartford where the Wolf Pack had another busy week. WOLF PACK The Wolf Pack will have Boo Nieves back at center this coming season. Nieves accepted the qualifying offer he received form the New York Rangers that has him on a one-year, two-way deal paying him $700K at the NHL and $70K while playing in the AHL. His contract is the same one Steven Fogarty accepted from the organization two weeks ago. Nieves signing leaves just three Restricted Free Agents (RFA) from last year’s team who remain unsigned. Chris Bigras, who was acquired from San Antonio for Ryan Graves and who played well in the 18 games he played in Hartford, is the first of the three who are unsigned. The second is centerman, Peter Holland, who was acquired from Laval for Adam Cracknell. Holland was solid in keeping the Wolf Pack afloat at the mid-season for 16 games. He was recalled by the Rangers and never came back. Montreal signed Holland for $700K on a one-way deal for this upcoming season. The last player was a trade deadline pickup, Matt Beleskey. He didn't produce much in his 14 games, but he still has three years left on the deal he signed with Boston at $1.9 million per year. He's listed on the Rangers' roster and could be a buyout candidate. The Rangers currently have 51 organizational contracts, which is one above the 50 number permitted under the CBA. They are a shade under $23 million beneath the salary cap according to capfriendly.com. The Wolf Pack's current roster has 23 players and the Rangers have 24 with some arbitration hearings and RFA deadlines still to occur. It's inevitable that The Rangers are clearly going to be shifting players in one manner or another. The cap number that's been established for 2018-19 is $79.5 million with the 5% escalator that the NHLPA likely to exercise as they've done every year under the present agreement. The Pack made a small signing in Connor Lacouvee. It should make training camp for the Wolf Pack, which should be the most competitive in recent memory, especially among the goaltenders. Brandon Halverson, who's entering the final season under his entry level deal, and Chris Nell, in the second last year of his contract after playing with three teams last year including Hartford, Adirondack, and Kansas City in the ECHL, will compete with Marek Mazanec for the number two goalie slot behind the presumptive number one, Alexander Georgiev, assuming he isn't the number two in New York behind Henrik Lundqvist. Coming off a strong senior season with the University of Minnesota-Mankato, Lacouvee was signed to an ECHL deal with the Rangers new Double AA affiliate, the Maine Mariners. Lacouvee went 23-6-1 posting a 1.80 GAA and a .914% save percentage. LaCouvee transferred out of Boston University where he played under new Ranger head coach David Quinn. The Mavericks were eliminated in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament by the eventual national champion, University Minnesota-Duluth. PLAYERS & COACHING MOVEMENT On Saturday, The Rangers announced the signing of former Yale Bulldog defenseman, Rob O'Gara who accepted his qualifying offer of a one-year, two-way deal paying $874,105K in the NHL and $70K for his play in the AHL. O'Gara was obtained from Boston for defenseman Nick Holden at the trade deadline. RW Kevin Morris, the son of former Nighthawk, Mark Morris, has gone from the Manchester Monarchs (ECHL) to the Coventry Blaze (England-EIHL) for next season. The AHL first released the home openers of all 31 teams. The Wolf Pack play host to the Providence Bruins on October 5th at 7 pm. On Wednesday, the AHL released the entire AHL team-by-team schedule for the 2018-19 season. The Pack's second home game is Sunday October 7th at 3 pm against the Laval Rocket. The top minor league affiliate of the Rangers have just five home games in the first seven weeks of the season. They will have two road trips of four and five games during that time span. Read the story HERE. The Sound Tigers signed 10 players for the upcoming season including the Bourque brothers, Ryan and Chris. Chris, 33, signed a one-year deal while Ryan signed an extension. This will be the third team where the pair will play for professionally, the first time was in Hartford, then Hershey and now BrIdgeport. Tigers team captain, Ben Holmstrom, his brother Josh, and Connor Jones have also signed extensions. Jones, of course, along with his twin brother Kellen, are the grandsons of former New Haven Blades player Terry Jones and both attended Quinnipiac University (ECACHL). Kellen is heading overseas to play next year for Vastervik IK (Sweden-Allsvenskan) after playing in Worcester (ECHL) last season. Goalie Jeremy Smith signed a one-year free agent deal with the Sound Tigers after playing last year in Charlotte and Jeff Kubiak, Matt Gaudreau (Johnny Gaudreau’s younger brother), Mike Cornell and Tyler Mueller. Ex-Pack, Ryan Haggerty, (Stamford/Trinity Catholic) re-signs with Wilkes Barre/Scranton. Former Yale goalie, Alex Lyon, signed a two-year extension with Philadelphia. His first season is $750K for the NHL and $250K for the AHL. His second year is a $750K one-way deal. Lyon’s former college teammate with the Bulldogs, Adam Larkin, has signed with Reading (ECHL) for the upcoming season. Ex-Pack, Michael Joly, signed a one-year AHL deal with the AHL newest team, the Colorado Eagles. Last season, his second as a pro, Joly helped lead the Eagles to their second consecutive ECHL Kelly Cup title leading the league in the regular season with 41 goals in 52 games for 67 points. Joly was named playoff MVP with his 29 points in 24 post-season games. He played 19 games with three goals and seven points while on recall with San Antonio. Joly will have a brand new bench boss in one-time Sound Tiger head coach Greg Cronin. He was named as the Eagles first AHL head coach. Cronin was the second head coach in Bridgeport history. He was there for two years (2003-2005). Cronin was in his second tour as an assistant with the Islanders and has coached for over 30 years. He was an assistant coach at Colorado College for three years in the early 1990’s. Cronin’s assistants will be the Eagles ECHL head coach Aaron Schneekloth and former Wolf Pack, Ryan Tobler. His post game rants were usually amusing, very colorful and often unprintable. Tucson inks the Klima twins, Kelly and Kevin from Chicoutimi (QMJHL), They are the sons of former NHL’er, Petr Klima. The Roadrunners also signed one-time Ranger draft pick, and an ex-Sound Tiger, Daniel Maggio, who signed a one-year AHL contract. Maggio spent most of last year with Ft. Wayne (ECHL) and a 13-game recall time with Tucson. Ex-Sound Tiger, Harry Zolnierczyk, signs with Springfield, his seventh AHL team. Adam Erne (North Branford) inks a one-year, one-way ($800K) deal with Tampa Bay. The Lightning also added Iowa head coach Derek Lalonde as a new assistant coach. Ex-CT Whale, Christian Thomas, departs from Wilkes Barre/Scranton and heads to Rogle BK (Sweden-SHL). Former Wolf Pack captain, and Sound Tiger player, Joe Whitney, and who's about to become a father for a second time, has signed a Euro deal with HC Linkopings (Sweden-SHL). Also joining him on the AHL-To-Euro list is Patrick Wiercioch of the Utica Comets who hooks up with Dynamo Minsk (Belarus-KHL). Ex-Sound Tiger, Darren Nowick, who split last season with Stockton and Kansas City (ECHL), signs with Vasterik IK (Sweden-Allsvenskan). Dustin Gazley departs Hershey for EC Salzburg (Austria-AEHL). That makes 48 players plus a coach who have signed to go overseas. 23 teams have lost at least one player. Greg Rallo, after 615 AHL games and over 700 pro-and-minor pro games, retires from Texas to become an assistant coach with Milwaukee. He replaces former New Haven Nighthawk, Stan Drulia, who was made a Pro Scout by Nashville after eight years as an assistant coach. Former Beast of New Haven and NHL enforcer, Peter Worrell, was signed as an assistant coach with the Fayetteville Marksmen (SPHL). Worrell’s coaching career began after his 2010 retirement. He was the head coach at the collegiate club hockey level with the Florida Atlantic University Owls (ACHA Division-3) and North Broward County Prep School over the last seven years. The Owls made it to the regional finals this year before losing 2-1 to the University of Central Florida Knights in double overtime. Ex-Pack, Pascal Rheaume, was named head coach for the Val D’Or Foreurs (QMJHL) and his assistant coach is ex-Sound Tiger super pest, Pascal Morency. Ex-Pack, Brodie Dupont, signs with Dornbirner EC (Austria-AEHL). Ex-CT Whale, Andreas Thuresson, has signed with HV-71 (Sweden-SHL) after splitting last year with Kunlun Red Star (China-KHL) and SC Langnau Tigers (Switzerland-LNA) in the second half. The father of a student slain in a Florida high school shooting is suing the armed Broward County deputy who ducked behind a building while people were massacred inside.

Meadow Pollack was one of the 17 killed during the Valentine’s Day shooting in a freshman building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Her father, Andrew Pollack, is placing blame on former Broward County sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson – the high school’s armed resource officer who was trained to confront an active shooter.

CCTV footage from the incident showed Broward County Sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson, 54, drive up to the high school building as a gunman massacred 17 students and staff members – only to hop off, unholster his gun, and run behind a concrete wall.

“He let my daughter get shot nine times at point-blank range,” Pollack told the Miami Herald. “He had the opportunity to go in and instead, let all those people get murdered.”

Pollack’s lawsuit also names the self-confessed shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz; the estate of Cruz’s mother – who died in November; and Cruz’s temporary foster family, James and Kimberly Snead, who took Cruz in after his mother died. Three behavioral and mental health facilities which evaluated Cruz prior to the shooting are also named.

Peterson was suspended without pay before resigning hours later on Feb. 23 after surveillance footage from the incident revealed that he never entered the building after Cruz began shooting.

“Peterson is my main target,” Pollack said. “He could have stopped it. Could have saved my kid. Nobody should be able to not do their job, receive a pension and ride off into the sunset.“

The lawsuit goes into detail about Cruz’s troubled past, noting that the teen “suffered from severe mental illness and was prone to violence.”

When Cruz arrived at the high school on Feb. 14, the lawsuit claims a “pusillanimous” Peterson “cowered in a safe location between two concrete walls” as the gunman “rained bullets upon the teachers and students.” –Bloomberg

“The video speaks for itself. His actions were enough to warrant an internal affairs investigation, as requested by Sheriff Scott Israel on Feb. 21. After being suspended without pay, Peterson chose to resign and immediately retired rather than face possible termination,” the department said in a brief statement with the video’s release.

Peterson, 54, dubbed the “Broward coward,” was blasted by Sheriff Scott Israel a week after the shooting, telling reporters that Peterson should have “went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer,” adding that the deputy’s failure to act left him “devastated. Sick to my stomach. There are no words.”

Scot Peterson has defended his actions. Following the shooting, his attorney, Joseph DiRuzzo, said “Allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue.”

Pollack, on the other hand, says he wants people to know that Peterson is a “coward.”

“My daughter died crawling by a doorway — shielding a classmate who also ended up dying — waiting for someone to come help her. Help never came.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, Pollack called on the country to remain united in its quest to make schools safer – though he said that the conversation cannot veer towards gun control because the country will never come to an agreement.

“Nothing political. We love our kids,” he said. “Let’s get together as a country and fix it.”

Pollack made headlines following the shooting after he gave an impassioned speech during a listening session at the White House with the president.

“All these school shootings, it doesn’t make sense. Fix it!” Pollack said. “We should have fixed it And I’m pissed. Because my daughter … She’s not here. She’s not here. She’s in Fort Lauderdale [Star of] David cemetery, that is where I go to see my kid now.“

Peterson did not answer.

'A Coward': Commissioners Criticize Deputy's Actions During MSD Shooting

He was at the courthouse for a closed deposition stemming from one of several lawsuits filed against him stemming from his actions during the Parkland massacre.

The video, tweeted by Kashov Tuesday evening, racked up more than 10,000 retweets and 28,000 likes, including one from former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who praised his courage. "You stood up for your friends who no longer have a voice."

Reached by NBC 6 in Washington, where he's scheduled Thursday to give a presentation on school safety and the Second Amendment to the American Conservative Union's CPAC event, Kashuv said he confronted Peterson because "he was the only individual armed and he didn't do his job, and I wanted to ask him why he didn't do that. It was his job to go inside and he let 17 people die, 14 of those are kids, three of those were unarmed individuals who actually ran in when that was his job."

In the elevator, Kashov told Peterson as much: "That was your job, getting paid 80 grand to stand there… It's disgusting. It's despicable. And I hope that lives with you for the rest of your life. You had a chance to save those kids… and you didn't."

Peterson retired before the sheriff's office could fire him for his inaction, and is collecting a pension of more than $104,000 a year – something a state legislator proposed in a bill this week should be rescinded by the state for "wanton or willful neglect."

Kashov agreed.

"I think it's preposterous that this individual gets $104,000, which I would consider blood money," he said in the interview.

In the elevator, he was no less critical.

"I don't know how you live with yourself every day, man. You're the one that's supposed to go inside," Kashov said. "Fourteen of my classmates. Never coming back because you didn't act."

Kashov, who is a senior this year at another high school in Broward, was in an adjacent building on Feb. 14, 2018, when the killer struck and the deputy cowered, 70 feet from the building as gunshots rang out. Peterson did not move for 48 minutes, a state investigative commission concluded.

An excellent student who hopes for admission to an Ivy League college, Kashov has emerged as a leading voice for young conservatives, an ideological counterweight to others from the school who advocate for stricter controls on Second Amendment rights.

On this matter – Peterson's failure to protect students – they find some common ground.

Some say he was armed. Others not armed. The boy CNN labeled a hero for saving kids with Kevlar actually NEVER SAW CRUZ or Feis. Only heard about them from others. The assistant coach and Sheriff Israel said Feis "shielded" two or three students and died but that is total hearsay. No actual witness statements have been proffered.3. Cruz's mother allegedly called police 36 times to her home. A therapist is on record LAST YEAR saying that Cruz was sane, not mentally ill, and not a danger to himself or others. The mother died mysteriously of the flu last November and Cruz's brother was grabbed AFTER the shooting and committed in a psych ward against his will. Now Cruz has no family. The family Cruz was living with said he didn't drive, worked at the Dollar Store and showed no signs of crazy and are reportedly after Cruz's money. He texted he was going to the movies on Valentine's Day. A picture of Cruz and his brother lovingly holding their mother's ashes has emerged.5. A cop from another precinct heard a description of Cruz's clothing on the radio and just happened to spot him 2 miles from the school, just 21 minutes after the shooting ended. He was casually walking down the street after visiting Wal-Mart and McDonald's for a snack. He was arrested without incident, had a panic attack because he appeared confused about being arrested and within minutes appeared too drugged to walk.6. The Broward county prosecutor told Cruz if he didn't plead guilty they would seek the death penalty. His Broward county public defender advised him to plead guilty within 36 hours after shooting.7. The son of an ANTI TRUMP FBI GUY, David Hogg, the head of the school TV station, was texting his father DURING the shooting from a classroom and filmed the screams! He is the SOURCE of the video. Immediately after the shooting he gave interviews that appeared scripted and had several outtakes to fix his errors in recall. If officers waited outside, why wasn't the shooter arrested as he left the building?24. How did the gun control narrative script itself within 2 hours after the shooting?25.
