Still here.

1/ I turned 23 years young. Time's still ticking. I guess I'm truly an adult now with much less wiggle room for childish mistakes. No going back now - buckle up.

2/ Moved to a different city. This is now the 13th time I’ve moved? I've lost count. It’s much more living space which I’m excited about.

3/ Took a trip to Mexico, my first time in the country and at a resort. Honorable mentions:

- Veronique - the french-speaking 46 year old multi-millionaire. A free spirit on her solo adventures, yet still holding it down for her kids back home. Respect. Layers on layers to this woman. It was a pleasure. Oh, she also said she’s convinced I’m gonna be somebody in this life. Haha. I owe her a drink in Montreal.

- Kenzie - the travelling nurse; the shot I sent over on her birthday at hibachi had her second-guessing things, I know. Shoutout to our nurses.

- Drake and the wedding crew - volleyball was a blast. He lit a spark that maybe I can build a life in Florida, we'll see. And seeing how the beach wedding came together got me thinking...

- Kavya - celebrating her Masters from Toronto. Called me a baby but I didn't care for the challenge. I should've lied about my age.

- Trevor - retired cop turned realtor. A man of few words but a cool dude. Had me convinced the DR is a future travel spot for me. Thanks for the birthday cigar - we'll have to smoke one together in Connecticut.

- Georgia - the Lebanese hot head, whose mother called me over at dinner for a quick interview. Who knew the Niagara region has baddies.

- Conor - I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Herpes scare had him convinced his life was ruined. He spent the week finding us hoping I’d convince him otherwise. He'll be okay.

- Hannah with an H - the future marine biologist who fell in love on vacation. Still in her puppy love phase, but she's convinced Francesca is the one. I hope she gets her Italian wedding.

- Cynthia - not just a pretty face. Nanny on duty, but knows how to party too.

- Martha oh Martha - the fake extrovert (the energy is a front), yet her entertaining presence made me want to dance, which I did. A sweet girl nonetheless.

- Dave - wrapping up a year long road trip throughout Mexico with his family. He doesn't work a job, his wife does, and the kids are home-schooled. This motherf*cker is living my dream lol.

Meeting new people is always fun. I found out it was a family resort when I got there. But for the memories I managed to create, throw me in the hall of fame.

4/ I'm getting a kitten. Going to see a bengal cat later today, and I hope I can bring him home. If not him, then a different one. Names I have in mind: Niko, Milo, Benji, Rocco, Shadow. We'll see.

5/ This year, a handful of people came and went. New people bonded with, romances, new friendships, old friendships rekindled. Some of them stayed and some went. I’m trying to control less and less how relationships unfold. Makes me feel free. 

6/ I created a life blueprint of: - A few mantras. An example of one: “Everything is temporary. It all goes eventually.” - Positive affirmations - What success looks like in my relationship with: myself; God; family; friends; the love of my life; my community; my career and financials - My current dream purchases

This will be the map going forward.

Cities Most Dependent on RV Campgrounds

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many forms of travel to a halt over the last year, but one option that remains attractive for many consumers is traveling by recreational vehicle. RV travel has been thriving in the pandemic, with a bump in RV shipments and strong revenues for campgrounds and RV parks last year.

There are a few reasons why RV travel still holds appeal in the COVID-19 era. When traveling and staying in one’s own vehicle, there is less reason to fear exposure to the virus when the alternatives involve sharing space with others in an airport, restaurant, or hotel. Further, many of the destinations people seek out when traveling by RV are outdoor, natural attractions which are similarly less risky.

While COVID-19 has stoked additional interest in RVs recently, demand for RVs has in fact been growing steadily for several years. One of the big factors behind this trend has been the U.S.’s growing number of retirees. As Boomers age out of the workforce, many of them are taking to the road in RVs and campers to enjoy their retirement. But RVs hold appeal for younger Americans, too—22 percent of the market is 18 to 34 year olds, who are increasingly buying or renting RVs for camping and other outdoor activities.

Over the past two years, monthly RV shipments were consistently reaching 30,000 or more—already strong figures—until stay-in-place orders took effect in March and April of 2020. But over the summer, shipments rebounded even stronger, topping 40,000 RVs per month throughout the second half of the year. And industry experts expect this trend to continue, with shipments for 2021 projected to exceed 500,000 vehicles, which would be a record figure for the industry.

Increased interest in buying and renting RVs has also been good business for those operating RV parks and recreational camps—an industry sector that includes both RV parks and campgrounds as well as recreational vacation camps, such as hunting camps, fishing camps, and dude ranches. While revenues for such establishments also dipped during the initial COVID-19 shutdowns, the overall trajectory dating back to 2012 has been positive. During the busy spring and summer months, total industry sector revenues now regularly exceed $2 billion quarterly nationwide, of which RV parks and campgrounds account for about half. Even in the slower winter months, revenues have topped $1 billion per quarter every year since 2017.

Some states are reaping the benefits of this interest more than others. Many of the states in the Western United States, which have plentiful protected park lands and natural attractions suited for camping and outdoor excursions. The most prosperous of these Western states is South Dakota, home to six national parks or monuments, including one of America’s top tourist attractions in Mount Rushmore.

But it is Maine, the New England state that bills itself “Vacationland,” that takes the top spot among states when considering per capita sales at RV parks and campgrounds. Maine draws travelers to its numerous natural attractions, including Acadia National Park and the state’s scenic coast, mountains, and woodland regions. The state generates more than $600,000 in annual sales at RV campgrounds per 10,000 residents.

Having popular tourist attractions nearby is also a strong indicator of RV campground sales at the metro level. For this reason, metro areas like Rapid City, SD (Mount Rushmore) and Orlando (Disneyworld and other theme parks) top our list of the metropolitan areas that generate the most revenue from RV parks and campgrounds. To find these locations, researchers at Outdoorsy used data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Economic Census to calculate the annual sales at RV parks and campgrounds per 10,000 residents.

Make a list of places you have visited in last 2 weeks and also try to precisely include the date, time and address. Examples: workplace, restaurants, friend/relative home, school/childcare/camp, places you may have stayed (rooming house, hotel etc.).

· CONTACTS

Who were with you or near you within less than 2 metres distance in last 48 hours before you generated covid 19 symptons or, in case of not having symptoms, in the 48 hours before getting tested Covid 19 test lab?

Practice Covid Contact Tracing: Identify where you have stayed or visited and who you were physically close to in last 48 hours can positively help to contain the spread of the covid virus in your community.

Create a detailed list of the names, phone numbers, and dates and times of your last and also most recent contact with anyone who:

· stays with you in your home

· works with you in the same office or workplace

· has been closer physically within the distance of 2 meters for longer than a brief time (i.e., had a chat).

Stolen Valour – Exposing the Fraudsters

My first experience with Stolen Valour occurred over a decade ago shortly after being elected as president of the local chapter of The Royal Canadian Regimental Association (RCR). The branch had participated in a veterans orientated event in Niagara and after the parade, some Korean War veterans cornered me at the local legion. They pointedly noted there was an elderly member within our branch who was wearing Korean War medals despite the fact that, while he was serving at the time of the conflict, he did not actually deploy to Korea. They were not impressed. They had approached the individual themselves but to no avail and they therefore expressed expectations of me to resolve the matter as a fellow member of the RCR.

Never Pass a Fault is the regimental motto, and the issue was quickly sorted.

The second time was of far greater consequence. We were proudly flying the regimental banner, while participating in a convention level parade through the streets of Niagara Falls which was hosted by the local Legion. Afterwards, I was approached by a retired Company Sergeant Major (CSM) of The Royal Canadian Regiment and Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR). He was an older fellow who certainly looked the part! His pants were sharply creased, shoes polished, medals affixed perfectly on a sharp blue blazer adorned with The RCR’s Snr NCO’s crest, medals, American and Canadian parachute wings inclusive with the white leaf of the CAR. 

This Sergeant Major claimed to be a member of The RCR Association’s Toronto Branch, who had been dispatched by Regimental HQ to escort one of The Regiment’s Memorial Cross Mothers to Niagara for the parade. Naively our group welcomed him. Throughout that summer he travelled to Niagara to participate with the Support the Troops rallies which our RCR Branch was organizing in Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake and Fort Erie in support of the Crystal Beach Volunteer Firemen (CBVF). The CBVF were seeking to create the Albert Storm Memorial Park and Boat launch on shores of Lake Erie. Pro Patria, mission accomplished.

Tragically, it was the cruel loss of another regimental brother in Afghanistan and the subsequent provision of the Memorial Cross (MC) to his family which revealed this case of stolen valour. Seeking guidance from Regimental HQ in respect to potential MC protocols should the family accede to our offer of support, I mentioned Sergeant Major X and the Memorial Cross mother whom he had previously escorted, supposedly at RHQ's request,  to Niagara earlier that summer.

"Who’s that?” they asked. Fly the Red Flag!

Some due diligence research into the regimental archives revealed that no such CSM ever existed!

I was shocked and I thought to myself;  What kind of individual does that? Who would deceive a grieving Memorial Cross Mother in such a cruel manner? What kind of individual perpetuates such deception on the veterans community by exploiting the spilled blood of the Royal Canadian Regiment? Why go to such elaborate lengths to obtain all the trappings and uniform items to complete his deception?

More importantly the question begs, why? What purpose could this possibly serve?

Could this have been part of a nefarious scheme designed to grift a distraught Memorial Cross mom out of any financial settlement accorded to her by the government in respect to her son's tragic death in Afghanistan? My concerns were shared by RHQ in Petawawa. The Military Police were alerted, which in turn initiated an investigation that would ultimately include the Niagara Regional Police Service. Military emissaries were dispatched to the home of the Memorial Cross mother to explain what was transpiring and to provide her support if needed.

The case unfolded thus:

Mr. Stolen Valour was invited to the Niagara Falls Police Station police station for an interview.

Mr. Stolen Valour admitted that he had never served, let alone attained the rank of CSM,  in The Royal Canadian Regiment.

Mr. Stolen valour admitted that he had never served in the Canadian Airborne Regiment. (Nor did he earn the US or Canadians wings he so often boasted about).

Mr. Stolen valour admitted that he had never served in Cyprus, and therefore his medals were as bogus as the rest of his cruel hoax.

However, as no charges were laid in this case and since there was no other recriminations, Mr. Stolen Valour soon reinvented himself once more as a member of the Royal Regiment of Canada. He has since lain wreaths on Remembrance day, and even went so far as to participate in a documentary series. The episode never aired yet it was this interview which ultimately proved to be his downfall.

It’s difficult to handle ageing parents when they refuse to listen to you. Most adult children will enter this phase in their life. It’ll be nerve-racking to find loved ones acting in ways that may cause injury or not heeding good advice. Usually, these disagreements between ageing parents and adult children emerge when it comes to the topic of their medication, diet, housing, lifestyle, driving, etc.

Seek to Understand, Not Argue

Proper communication is very crucial in intense discussions. Avoid making it be a power struggle at any cost. You can reduce resistance by occasionally allowing them to be right and yourself to be wrong, even when you know your points are stronger. This is all about making your loved ones feel heard and respected. Remember not to rant, nag or push them every time to do what you think is best. Accept the Situation

Accepting the situation as it is and staying calm can help you handle the situation in a rational way. It’s not easy to keep calm when you feel helpless and frustrated. But you need to accept that your loved ones are adults and they’ve the right to make their own decisions, even if those decisions are wrong. You can’t treat them or deal with them like stubborn children. Make sure to let them know your concerns and speak to them with love and tenderness. This will, in turn, help them find reassurance that a change or your advice isn’t so bad.

Understand Them

Avoid being critical or judgemental about their actions all the time. Otherwise, it’ll make them become more defensive. Be sensitive and try to understand the reason behind their actions. Often it’s some sense of insecurity that triggers them to refuse help. Find out why they are behaving that way. Are they depressed or confused, or they are doing it to assert independence, or they are scared.

Give Them Your Time

Although you have personal and professional obligations, spend a little more time with your senior loved ones. They will appreciate it if they get a bit more attention from you. Communication and interactions can become smoother if they feel that this relationship is one of your priorities. Also, make sure to address challenging subjects only on days when they’re not anxious, tense or depressed.

Talk to Their Doctor

If all communication with your loved ones fails, consult their doctor. Share your concerns about their physical and emotional well being. Ask for their suggestions. Seniors often trust their doctors and pay heed to their advice.

Note that you can’t really change your loved ones’ mind. Without expecting them to change, follow these tips to handle the situation. Be persistent as the problem won’t be resolved in a single day. You need to discuss sensitive issues with the right approach to be understood.

5. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park

This is an extremely popular attraction for families, and a variety of tours are available. Top attractions in the park include the Mammoth Dome, which is almost 200 feet high, and the Ruins of Karnak, named for its massive limestone columns, which give the impression of a ruined temple.

Bisons Baseball is Back

Baseball fans, join me for a trip in the Wayback Machine to April 16, 1988. I’m 15 years old, and making my first trip to brand-new Pilot Field in downtown Buffalo to see our local nine, the Buffalo Bisons – American Association AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Herd is facing the Denver Zephyrs in their third game at the new yard. My first reaction after entering the gates at Washington and Swan is astonishment at the difference between this sleek new park and the Bisons’ previous home, the cavernous, creaky, Depression-era War Memorial Stadium. Pilot Field, in contrast, was major league quality in every respect, and is the first ballpark designed with a retro aesthetic (Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the first MLB stadium to feature this style, opened in 1992).

Now jump back to today. The park has a new name (Sahlen Field), the Bisons play in a new league (International League), and have a new parent club (Toronto Blue Jays), but it’s still a great place to watch the national pastime. For the past few years, a couple of friends and I have taken the afternoon off to attend Opening Day. We’ll have a pre-game lunch at one the taverns near the stadium (last year’s choice was Washington Square), then head into the park. Once we’re in, first things first – beer. Sure, buy a macrobrew at one of the concession stands if you must, but I HIGHLY recommend starting at Consumers Craft Brew Corner, near the Swan Street entrance. Local and regional craft beers are on tap here, and start game day off on the right foot. My friend Dan always buys his first cold one from Conehead, one the Bisons’ long-time vendors, mostly for his assurance with every beer sold that it is, indeed, a cold one:

“You’ve got the Conehead guarantee; You get a warm beer from me; You drink it for free.”

Get some peanuts to pair with the brewski, and it’s time for the National Anthem (we sing both the American and Canadian versions here – Buffalo is a border town). After a couple of innings of non-stop baseball talk and enjoying the early spring sunshine, it’s time for more food. Luckily, Sahlen Field has terrific ballpark fare. My go-to choice is always a fried bologna sandwich – a really thick slice of every kid’s favorite lunch meat, topped with grilled peppers, onions and melted cheese, wrapped in a soft bun. But there are a lot of other choices as well, from standards like burgers, hot dogs and nachos to local favorites like Charlie the Butcher’s beef on weck, Ru’s Pierogi, The Original Pizza Logs and Nick Charlap’s ice cream. Now suitably sated, we’ll watch the rest of the game, jaw some more about the upcoming season and hopefully see the Herd victorious.

One of my favorite parts of any Bison game is the race around the bases. A lot of ballparks have something like this – local food or characters transformed into mascots who race around the field between innings. It’s sausages in Milwaukee, pierogi in Pittsburgh and presidents in D.C. In Buffalo, it’s Wing, Atomic Wing, Blue Cheese, and Beef on Weck – the replacement for retired fan favorite, Celery.

The first game of the baseball season has always been special to me, as it symbolizes the end of winter and the onset of another spring and summer filled with outdoor adventures. My first glimpse of the carefully manicured infield dirt, crisp, unsullied white baselines and neatly mowed outfield grass fills me with happiness as I wonder what the new season has in store for my favorite team (hopefully, a return, and a victory this time, in the World Series). Hope really does spring eternal.

Once upon a time, 3 years ago, I had a peer-support dream. I had been diagnosed with PTSD as a paramedic, and after I spent seven weeks at a rehabilitation hospital named Homewood, in Guelph, I went home and felt very alone. There was no group that I could attend to share my emotions with people in my career/culture anymore. So I reached out to my friend named Dawn, and we thought to ourselves, “Let’s change this”. So they made a call out on social media for people to help, and many people from all across Canada came forward to create what is now called Wings of Change.

One of the main peer support leaders for this group was Syd Gravel, a retired staff sergeant for the Ottawa Police Department and a member of the Order of Merit for Police – he knew his stuff, and told Natalie that she didn’t have to reinvent the wheel and that she could use reading from his book 56 Seconds at her Wing of Change meetings.

After this, Jim Harris, the Director of the Barrie CMHA chapter at the time, provided the location for the first inaugural meeting to take place, and Wings of Change Peer Support was born.

But that’s only the beginning! Wings of Change took off! (Pun intended) and Syd and Natalie needed some help with the growing demands for the program. And Natalie had an instant idea – Katherine Pomerleau! She would be a perfect Program Coordinator and since Katherine has joined the team she has accomplished SO MUCH…and all by volunteer hours. Wings of Change is always free and all of our amazing facilitators generously give their time every month (sometimes several times a month) to make sure that meetings are held and that community heroes know that they are not alone.

Katherine has:

Created a peer support knowledge exchange;

Organized and facilitates peer learning for the facilitators;

Established guidelines based off the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s best practices for peer support;

Develops templates for presentations;

Developed a framework to help grow chapters across the nation.

She makes sure that every meeting has at least two qualified facilitators, and has grown the Wings of Change family to include the following cities:

But if that’s the case, it’s unclear why the pair are still in Costa Rica.

The couple’s ordeal began on Feb. 15, when they were visiting friends who live in Pavones, a small community located along the southern Pacific Coast.

David and Kristen were sleeping on a large deck at their friend’s home. David woke up at around 2 a.m., and slipped and fell over three-and-a-half metres off the deck, breaking his pelvis, back and arm.

The situation looked dire — but luckily, the friend they were visiting is a paramedic. He managed to get David stable, and they drove the retired Dofasco employee 50 minutes out of the jungle on a makeshift backboard in the back of a pickup truck to the nearest medical facility.

Ronald was rushed into emergency surgery to repair his pelvis. Once that was successful, his insurance company planned to fly him home for a second surgery to repair his back.

There was just one problem — there were no beds available.

“There was just no space in ICU,” his wife said. “They had to go ahead with the second operation here in Costa Rica.”

Ready to travel but nowhere to go

Ever since Feb. 17, the Ronalds have been trying to get back to Ontario, but they keep hearing from their insurance company that there are no beds available. Until one opens up, they can’t transport him.

While they are lauding the care they’ve received in Costa Rica, they are now desperate to get home, Kristen said.

“He’s ready to travel, they have an air ambulance, and they’re ready to bring him home,” she said.

“Sometimes I wonder if he’d even get the level of care he’s gotten here in Ontario.”

In a statement to CBC, Minister of Health Eric Hoskins said that an “average of 10 ICU beds were available throughout the Hamilton Niagara LHIN this past weekend.”

“However, we cannot verify whether the insurer contacted all hospitals in the region,” he wrote.

Hoskins also offered his “deepest concern” for the family.

“It’s stressful any time a loved one is injured or requires surgery, whether that be here in Ontario or abroad. I know there’s nothing more important to all of us than the health and safety of our loved ones,” he wrote.

“What is important now is that we make the full service of Ontario’s health care system completely available to this family.”

Provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath denounced the situation at a Wednesday morning press conference, blaming the couple’s plight on “decades of health care cuts” by the Liberals and Conservatives.

“Imagine being hurt, and stuck in a foreign country. You want to come home, to get care in the hospital you know and trust. But you’re turned away because the hospitals are so crowded there’s no room for you,” she said. “That’s absolutely not the kind of health care system people in Hamilton, and throughout this great province, deserve. These cuts — cuts that have been going on for years — have to stop.”

“The health care services we count on the most are strained to the breaking point.”

Overcrowding a pressing issue

The overcrowding in Hamilton’s hospitals has come into sharp focus in recent months.

Hamilton Health Sciences has been consistently over 105 per cent capacity since October 2016, officials told CBC News last month. St. Joe’s, meanwhile, was 28 beds over capacity in the same timeframe.

Last summer, Hamilton Health Sciences announced it was cutting $20 million in costs from its budget, with another $7 million in similar cuts coming at St. Joseph’s Healthcare.

In an email, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care said the province has invested $500 million in new funding for Ontario hospitals, with an increase of $8 million in 2017/2018 compared to the previous year at St. Joe’s, and an increase of $16.8 million at Hamilton Health Sciences, over the same time period.

Overcrowding issues have contributed to a rise in code zero ambulance emergencies, which skyrocketed to their highest monthly level in five years in January.

A code zero is when there is only one — or even zero — ambulances across the service’s entire fleet available for a call.

The city says long hospital offload delays and increasing service demands are major contributors to the frequency of code zero alerts.

Hamilton has seen 911 calls for help spike over 5 per cent, the city says, coupled with a more than 20 per cent drop off in hospital offload performance at local emergency rooms, and that was an area where Hamilton was already lagging behind the provincial standard.

Horwath says numbers like these show that more needs to be done to improve health care in the province.

“Hospital workers are working off their feet to meet the need,” she said. “I’ve heard from health care workers who leave their shifts in tears … it’s horrifying.

“We need hospitals that have room for Ontarians when they need it most.”
