music becoming visual
Tumblr media
This edition of contrastbalance is primarily about music becoming more and more visual, part of the reason I want physical copies out. Everyone featured in this entire thing has a strong image in some way – some are bold and some are enticing. Some use it as a stand alone statement, others to create something as eye catching as they do ear catching. Others use your eyes as a horizontal platform, ingraining into your cheekbone to reach being one step more relatable over the process of rolling out releases and 5 steps away from their ephemeral counterparts.
In early 2014, everyone’s favourite adopted artsy sibling Dev Hynes gave a stellar Ted Talks. The lecture’s focus was his understanding of the neurological condition of synaesthesia, and also featured a beautiful soundscape using keys he associates with certain colours. His projectile talent becomes far more transparent, opening up to the sniper focused audience, all while the speaker is reminiscent of Grace Jones mixed with a Lemony Snicket character.
Tumblr media
Chromesthesia is the more particular type of the condition where colours link to sound, another known carrier is Pharrell. In an interview with Psychology Today he talks about over-active parts of his brain being forced to temporarily halt. He states “you ask any great rapper or writer or musician, and they’ll tell you their craziest ideas come from the shower or the plane because in both places there is sensory deprivation.” Williams linking his heard with his seen when meeting minds is integral to his much covered juxtaposition, which everyone knows he’s interested in creating. He sees his music the same as he does with getting dressed and everything else in between, drawing variation from a multicultural background, he is maybe someone you wouldn’t expect to be interested in what he is.
When A$AP Rocky was a can of spaghetti with the little sausages bursting onto a line of bridesmaids in 2011, what people who make music wear was at one of it’s highest points of fast changing scrutiny. He and the Mob were seen in the places to be, alongside the elite likes of Jeremy Scott, Michele Lamy and Kris Van Assche.
He had grown up bouncing between Harlem and Soho, at a young age mixing with people who inspire inspirers. Tales of acid-induced friendliness at SXSW give some sight into his individual and groups’ participating stabs at hedonism – but he has mixed in plenty of the high-brow sensibility to brilliantly market himself as someone standoffish when it comes to actually being a designer himself, a lane that has distracted musicians from every corner and status. He said in an early interview with SBTV “I’m not a designer, I’m not a fashion designer, I could consult like ‘yeah that’s dope but maybe you should fix this collar a little,’ but I don’t know the first thing about designing, I think that’s disrespectful to the culture. For me to just take advantage of it due to my fame, come in and pretend I can design – that’s not what I do.” Genuine interest and admiration saw designers, models and everyone hanging on in between every side of water huddle around Mayers, safe in the knowledge that artists are very aware of creative processes of those adjacent to them in other fields. He’s in the same vein of Bowie in terms of recreating himself.
While he’s admitted that Long.Live.A$AP leaned too much on the logical option at the time of trying to jump into pop minefields, At.Long.Last.A$AP showcased his genre-blending abilities. Following and probably coinciding with the hardship of losing one of his closest friends, fellow inspirer-of-inspirers A$AP Yams – seemed like he was having fun after making something he was sure he wanted us to hear and see. From the outside he’s the most pertinent visible link between underground music and wide arrays of fashion, and didn’t need to capture considerable numbers in pop audiences to do so.
Tumblr media
Donald Glover’s creations always seem to meet at a drunk yoga class. The casual nature in which the creations are born is easily recognisable and even portrayed on-screen. Where Rocky and other massive acts could be described as embodying the more material, often recent and biographical side of rap, those like Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper and Glover prefer telling interpersonal stories that drop listeners in the midst of varying turmoil.
Moonlighting as Childish Gambino, a dad and a guy who seems to place a lot of emphasis on changing his facial hair, Glover lives a really quiet life. His first exposure to the public eye came after Tina Fey was shown a spec screenplay for The Simpsons by David Milner, intrigued, she dug up some of the short films Glover made while at New York’s Tisch School of the Arts as part an improvisational comedy group, and she subsequently hired him to write for 30 Rock at just 23. After an 89-episode stint as Community‘s Troy he was written off the show, later stating that he casually asked to leave because his “heart wasn’t really in it. They, thankfully were just like ‘yeah’ and they let me go”, to Vibe Magazine, which wasn’t imparted to public knowledge at the time – leading many to boycott the show confused about the demise of a character and actor that had quickly impressed and maintained the sole reason for them to bother watching.
Tumblr media
Not until 2013 and the rollout of because the internet would he post pictures of handwritten notes on Instagram, one stating “I didn’t leave Community to rap, I don’t wanna rap. I wanted to be on my own.” He says he was “mildly inconvenienced” by the resulting phonecalls.
Ambition to create using so many different artforms, even ability to do so at the level Glover consistently does is one thing, balancing all of them into your waking hours with a newborn is different. In August 2013 work began with FX on Atlanta, around following his short-lived recommencement with Community, around finishing because the internet, around shooting self-written short films featuring tripping pornstars, around the Deep Web Tour, recording and releasing STN MTN and then a day later Kauai.
Atlanta premiered on FX on 6th September 2016. It follows around Earn, who dropped out of Princeton to return back to Atlanta and become a full time slacker, part-time Airport salesman, part-time parent, post-retirement-occupation-time boyfriend. He realises first what his cousin is doing, then an episode length later that said cousin Paper Boi is on the brink of rap stardom and takes on an impromptu role as his manager. In the past few years the city has reached previously inaccessible heights in recognition as a culturally rich paradise for particularly African Americans – while the pressures of rubbing shoulders with some of the country’s artistic, business, innovative and sometimes underworld elite is present in the feel of the series, it’s Glover’s real-life cool in the face of doubt that makes the show so fluidly, deftly written, quaintly shot and highly addictive. “I tried to, I just wanted to make Twin Peaks with rappers,” he offers on The Ellen Show.
There is a brooding undercurrent that’s gained the critical acclaim and also a commissioned 2nd series just 2 weeks after it first aired. An all-black cast is few and far between, but been done – and all-black writing team is a less talked about issue in conversations about opportunity. President of FX, John Landgraf says of the pre-production meetings; “with Donald, he didn’t always articulate his vision in a way that we could see it, but his passions and ambition were clear.” There’s so much scope for a quirky show with (to many viewers) unconventional dialogue to go so wrong, just look at Bored to Death.
Tumblr media
The issues that Atlanta portrays Earn tackling are those held varyingly stagnant over long spans of time in different lights by different people – police brutality, parenthood, mental health, institutionalised fear, gender identity, exploitation, flawed or complete lack of ethics in the entertainment industries, attitudes to firearms over racial lines and also portraying Justin Bieber as a black teenager in a charity basketball game – at no point does the show make an effort to not seem like it was written by an all-black team looking outwards. Glover downplays any political role the show may play in a Wired interview, while giving some insight into the casual first steps towards the brilliance the show exudes: “I like it when black people are hit with a certain light, like purple. It just felt good to play around with the look of the show.” An incredibly curious person, no one could’ve written the dialogue for Van and Jayde in the restaurant in the ‘Value’ episode without having experienced a defining moment while leaning over fumes from a squash based appetiser.
Gambino reached what you could call the 2nd phase of marketing with Awaken, My Love! reaching almost 200 million Spotify plays. The album was first played alongside a full band and 6-part choir at PHAROS, a Joshua Tree installment that Glover curated with Wolf and Rothstein, Microsoft and Miles Konstantin. The latter developed the PHAROS Earth app, purchasable for $99, locked to the phone and owner acting as a ticket to the 3-day wilderness based festival, that Glover would state would be his only live performance in 2016. The app was to make sure no tickets could be accordingly resold for such an exclusive event, and after the phones were checked for eligibility at entry they were placed in magnetically locked bags that were handed out – to halt any leakage from the cult event to the outside world. The event placed so much emphasis on first hand purity, as broken down into 5 sections upon purchasing the app – “tribe, ritual, experience abstraction, architecture, language.”
Another peek at Glover disillusionment, this time with technology was displayed by a complete clearance of his Twitter and Instagram accounts at the end of 2014, only returning with a Tweeted countdown in June 2016. “Be helpful. Do not be a detriment. No irony” the app also stated alongside the 5 human experience intuitives. In September fans appeared at Joshua Tree in the “vibrancy colour” of blue, that acted as another entry requirement. Wading through a mixture of Brokeback Mountain sets and a party in a garage ambience the crowds saw an artist in full control of everything they were seeing.
Tumblr media
Due mainly to cold callers from Birmingham we’re probably now in the stage of evolution where we know not everyone is going to have a fully suitable voice for their chosen direction in life. Expectations naturally make up reaction and Rick Astley had all you shallow bastards annoyed. If you do listen to people’s music based solely on physical appearance you’ve probably got a relatively neo-nazi dad and you’ll frequently set fire to the family balaclava lexicon so you won’t have to accompany him on his shopping list. Album art is the forward-thinking way to live up to or fail to with regards to listeners expectations that they made with their eyes.
They act as a documentation of what they entomb and the location of the graveyard, modern graphic design actively swingy-chairs into the shins of people holding wine who don’t move out the way. When previously artwork was revealed ahead of release to moonwalk dropping breadcrumbs, that was a linear step like most steady marketing – today the rules often get told as you consume the experience. It lets you in for an all round view of a possibly new genre of image and you can easily find the cover you want to see, it might not match what you wanted to hear but you remember what you saw and go from there – much like casinos in the UK.
The hopefully budding romance of Zack Fox and Thundercat is communicated to the “here for this” spectators vibrantly through the covers of the deluxe vinyl copies of Drunk; feline optical illusion, trap mixtape reminiscent kaleidoscopes of viagra, guns and horses, also a seemingly constipated album artist. The visuals are a cue to using humour to help push through dark moments, it’s just as abstractly debilitating and distracting as that is. In an interview with Creative Review, the mystic force formerly known as Bootymath summarised: “I definitely just wanted to capture my sense of humour, which some would consider absurd or psychedelic. When life is just punching you in the back of the head, you start laughing at shit that doesn’t even correlate – it’s a coping mechanism but it helps create timeless inspiration. I wanted to inject those experiences and let designs be bold and confusing.”
Tumblr media
If the Drunk covers would be for the Peter Saul fans, Bonobo’s Migration is probably whispered to those into Dan Flavin. Simon Green’s 6th album cover was designed by Neil Krug – responsible for visuals accompanying sounds from Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd and Tame Impala. The art dads know Bonobo from scenic and melancholy drives drowning out your wife in the boot, and the story of how the album art came about is equally as Californian-style ritualistic.
The consistency of the crispness Krug captured definitely affected his sleeping pattern horribly – he would drive out into the Mojave in the middle of night to have a chance to capture the divinity in the area’s sunrise. Picturing the desert came from Green’s recent life choice of moving to Los Angeles, while finalising tracks he would drive out to find required portions of solace. In an interview, also with Creative Review he says, “You can hear things in a new way just from moving environment. The car test is a classic thing. Producers will say, ‘take a drive with the music’. I like to go up to the mountains – there’s lots of really weird and wonderful landscapes around where I live – and just spend time with the music. It’s very inspiring
it can spark an idea that you might not have had if you’d just been sat in an air conditioned studio.”
Tumblr media
The intensity of the supposed subject and the serenity it’s happening in narrate Krug’s skill as a press photographer and the same contrast correlates very effectively as something that could stand without explanation. The cover designer says in the same interview: “Once Si and I sat down and talked I knew the artwork needed to be something other than just landscape images. I thought, if this is going to grab your attention and create a narrative – you need something else in there – but what’s in there can’t be too loud or comment too much on what the music is. It had to stand out in an unusual way.”
Tumblr media
Another past-time visual components to music can choose to aim at is discourse on identity. 2016 was a massive year for image around music, particularly in acknowledging vulnerability in places it wasn’t seen previously. I was losing my mind watching a reaction video of Frank Ocean, and the channel owner states “he doesn’t know how to market himself apparently” – yet the singer has had strangers from passing by cars shouting “Frank where’s the album!” If people verbally assault you for more of just you, you’ve created a demand for yourself in infinite ways for constant consumption. Beginning with Endless, Ocean perfected the unorthodox rollout of artistic identity that included two albums, a magazine, a seemingly for-view-only clothing line, pop up retail locations, a music label and apparently a racing team. The most adored gift to date was in the shape of Blonde.
Tumblr media
Forever a mystery in an information age, Ocean’s most revealing statement came from that Tumblr note, which in turn made you a chiropractor studying the backbone Channel Orange, just as expected after that he money-danced into the abyss. He stands so close to the likes of West, Knowles, Mayer that reflections off of royal-like jewels fully expose his complete innocuous desire to go and live and them come tell us about it, although he seems to be making that arthouse full time. Post Channel Orange activities forced him to enter into the wilderness, absolutely no interest in TMZ harassment. He has all the clichĂ© qualities to live as a genius like those who handed the torch to him, including the inhuman work-rate; Blonde‘s clear perfectionism required it’s creator to work for at least 17 house a day at the height of production and there’s rumoured to be 150 versions of ‘White Ferrari‘. Apart from a casually released ‘Nikes‘ video, none of the tracks have received even slightly the treatment you’d expect to see for as a single.
Since the album was released at the end of August 2016, Ocean has already given a short interview while wearing Vans in the White House, a longer form conversation in the New York Times, had a filmed interview about the making of possibly his last stab at an “album format” and even released one and been featured on another song – he seems all set to fire himself off to the moon.
Tumblr media
What made Blonde all the more enticing was the visual attitude around the release – in the most unconventional cyclical portrayal he maybe could’ve thought of. There is a consistency throughout most of the imagery and what it’s getting it. Self reliance is the quality many align with Ocean’s character. In the New York Times article he revealed that since Channel Orange and the following borderline unwelcome attention, his label and management situation had grown all the more murky, and he had been in the process of buying back his masters from Def Jam. His deal with the label was covering two albums – after they indefinitely shelved his would-be solo album Nostalgia, Ultra he released it himself, Channel Orange followed just over a year later. Personal privacy requirements aside, the label still needed a second release, so Ocean slapped them with the carpentry tutorial that was Endless on the 1st of August 2016, to end the “seven year chess game” – less than 3 weeks later Blonde was released on his label Boys Don’t Cry.
His possible last album-album will be remembered as a great one – widely played and picked apart for years. Blonde lends from many corners, musical and lifestyle. Vulnerability is also set into specific genres, a recent champion of divulging is the Seattle based synth-pop artist Perfume Genius. An artistic contradiction with shared qualities of an 8-year old child prodigy, his music has been growing into larger sounding forms. His melancholic intimate pianist base-point works well bouncing off of lyrics about his past substance abuse issues, his sexuality, his living with Crohn’s, modern wellbeing concerns of gay men inside masculinity and domestic abuse.
Tumblr media
Along with the growing mechanics, the nature in which the recordings take place has majorly shifted. Just like the growing catalogue of projects which is set to extend in May, Mike Hadreas is experiencing strength in numbers in terms of albums, fans and relationships – namely with Alan Wyffels, who alongside Mike is 8 years sober. Perfume Genius could very well be in the same philosophical field as Zack Fox, using humour to patch up some past, some continuing difficulties, struggling to not look back with angst upon death threats from school days and even a hate-fuelled beating that forced him to elope with a lifestyle from Seattle all the way to New York. In that city Mike fell into the common grounds of coming of age searching, ending up with you shaking next to a radiator. “When you are a drug addict and alcoholic, you function in crisis mode all the time. Learning and Put Your Back N 2 It was Mike processing those things. Too Bright was a lot of anger. And this album is like, ok, we’re on the other side” Alan tells Fader.
Tumblr media
He seems absolutely focused on intense personal growth, which is admirable for a 35 year old. Also in Fader, Mike says of rehab – “I didn’t talk at all for the first four days. I was so terrified. Then there’s something so freeing: there’s lots of group therapy, and you’re just around people all the time because you’re all locked together. By the end of it, I was facilitating the discussions.” His ability to let loose is maybe most striking on his first album’s 3rd song, ‘Mr Peterson‘ about a school teacher who groomed and took advantage of him and subsequently committed suicide.
The new album is said to be a triumph of overcoming personal demons, but fears about growing hostility in his native country are just as scary as we move into increasingly accepting mindsets and heightened security measures see people referred to as “eggshells.” The response of strength in numbers also has Perfume Genius looking to create his new album in an innovative-to-himself manner, creating the melodies before the lyrics. His growth from nihilist to domestic bliss he admits doesn’t feel fully solid, but at the time it’s being focused on by the man himself and those observing prove important – that ascending joy with a gay backdrop is what the outlying masses need.

Can’t Afford to Buy a Vacation Getaway? Try Buying a Fraction of One
AndreyPopov/iStock
Annie Bone owns a three-story house in San Francisco—and two-eighths of a one-bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
A frequent traveler to New York City, Bone, 78, took advantage of something called fractional ownership about a decade ago. She and a friend bought shares of an apartment in a luxury building called the Phillips Club. They now have a deeded, partial ownership interest in a 600-square-foot unit with a fully equipped kitchen. (Shares of one-eighth of a unit in the building go for $180,000 to $318,000, with annual fees of $6,500 to $13,000.)
Since Bone and her friend combined their shares, they’re entitled to use the apartment at least four weeks a year, which they can divvy up however they like through the club’s flexible scheduling service. They don’t have to haul much back and forth, thanks to the unit’s private storage space. And the best part is that Bone can bring her Norwich terrier to the apartment. He’s become so familiar with the building and staff that “he thinks he owns the place,” she says.
“The location is fabulous, and the scheduling is flexible. You can change your times from year to year,” Bone says. “And it’s easy to sell your share if you want to.”
If this seems like a new take on an old idea, it’s because it is.
Fractionals vs. timeshares
Timeshares first cropped up in the vacation industry in the 1970s, and grew to the point where international chains now offer all-expenses-paid stays to lure prospective buyers. But interest in this type of ownership tanked along with the housing bust, after which people found it hard enough to hold onto one home, much less a vacation pied-Ă -terre.
But as the housing market has improved, so has the outlook for shared ownership, with fractional ownership becoming a popular option, especially with affluent buyers looking at highly desirable locations in big cities or well-known beach or ski resorts.
Although fractionals are similar to timeshares, in a timeshare the owner has purchased a period of time in which to use the property; a fractional owner actually owns a slice of the property itself. Expenses like property taxes and maintenance are shared across the owners, as is any rise or fall in the property value.
These shared properties are often part of private-residence clubs—hybrids between apartment living and hotels, with concierge services, fine dining, health spas, and an array of other amenities. Owners typically have a say in how the property is maintained, while a management company oversees upkeep. Plus, some clubs also have exchange programs that allow owners to swap their time for use at a different property where they don’t have ownership rights.
Sales at private-residence clubs and other fractional ownership developments fell off a cliff in 2008, due to the housing market collapse and recession. But buyer interest in the concept is again rising, primarily in the highest-priced vacation destinations.
Annual sales volume of fractional projects in North America has averaged around $515 million since 2010, a quarter of what it was between 2004 and 2008, according to Richard Ragatz, president of Ragatz Associates, which tracks the industry. He estimates that fractional sales rose a modest 10% last year over 2017, but says business has been more brisk in a handful of elite locations.
“It’s a specialized market,” he says. Projects that sell best are in ultrapricey, resort areas where there isn’t much housing available.
Maintenance-free, second homes in luxury locations
Much of the appeal of fractionals is that folks can still own property without having to worry about maintaining it.
Sean Daly, 63, and his wife, Christie Daly, 61, owned a vacation condo in Steamboat Springs, CO, before they retired a few years ago from their jobs as a partner in an accounting firm and an attorney, respectively. But they found they were spending too much time and energy fixing things and cleaning in their second home. So they sold the condo and bought three fractional interests in private-residence clubs in Vail, CO; the Hawaiian island of Kauai; and a Tuscan estate in Italy. The fractionals are all in private-residence clubs operated by Timbers Resorts.
They are guaranteed at least four weeks a year at The Sebastian in Vail Village and three weeks in the Hawaiian and Italian homes. Their annual dues for the three properties, which cover taxes, utilities, services, and insurance, are about $45,000. They also built a house in Steamboat Springs for when they’re not traveling.
“It’s a lot less hassle,” says Sean.
He likes the convenience of being able to leave his bicycle, cases of wine, and other belongings at the residence in Italy. But he doesn’t see fractional ownership as a money-making investment—and does not recommend anyone go into it for that reason. For them, he says, it makes sense as a more affordable alternative to repeatedly renting in Vail or Tuscany.
Fractionals also alleviate other big objections to buying resort real estate: high prices and being anchored to just one location, says Steve Dering. He helped pioneer the fractional residence club concept in the 1990s at Deer Valley, a ski resort in Park City, UT.
“With a fractional ownership, the price is more commensurate with your actual use, usually a few weeks a year,” he says.
Part-time luxury living for millionaires—and the other 99%
This isn’t to say fractionals are cheap. At Dancing Bear, Timbers’ private-residence club in downtown Aspen, CO, fractionals are commanding close to $3,700 per square foot. That translates into $925,000 for a one-eighth share in a 2,000-square-foot unit.
That’s because the world-renowned ski town is just that expensive. (To put that into perspective, the median home price in Aspen is $1,690,000, while the median rental goes for $12,250 a month, according to realtor.com¼ data.)
Many of these buyers can afford the sky-high price tags. The average fractional buyer in Timbers properties has a net worth of $7.5 million, according to Greg Spencer, the company’s chief executive. And they own at least two other vacation properties outright.
But not every fractional development is aimed at millionaires.
The castlelike RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain ski area, in Lincoln, NH, is also enjoying brisk sales at more down-to-earth prices. One-sixth shares start at around $60,000 for a studio and top out in the $200,000s for a three-bedroom unit. (The resort also offers whole ownership.) The first phase has a full-service restaurant, spa, fitness facility, production winery with tasting room, and two heated outdoor swimming pools, one of which is used as a skating rink in the winter.
Phase 2, due in 2021, is expected to include a conference center, sports bar, and whiskey distillery.
Dennis Ducharme, the developer, attributes the project’s success to its prime location: at the base of the ski mountain in lively downtown Lincoln, about two and a half hours from Boston. Additionally, the White Mountains National Forest region is such a tourist draw that “we’re busy year-round,” he says.

A fiscally conservative Democrat defeated 5 different high-profile opponents to characterize Honolulu in Congress on Saturday, together with the architect of the state’s authorized problem to President Trump’s journey ban and a follower of Democrat socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The outcomes have been one more blow to Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who’ve more and more tried to take their message mainstream forward of the November midterm elections, solely to see their most popular candidates come up quick.
Former Congressman Ed Case, a 65-year-old fiscal conservative, overcame Lt. Gov. Doug Chin, who as lawyer common took the Trump administration to court docket over a ban on journey to america from a number of international locations within the Center East. The measure, which has since been upheld by the Supreme Courtroom, was initially dominated unconstitutional by a Hawaii federal decide.
After his loss Saturday, Chin praised “individuals who do not need to take the nation as a right and need to make the nation a greater place.”
When the Supreme Courtroom upheld Trump’s journey ban this summer time, Chin once more sharply condemned the Trump administration: “I damage at the moment for Hawaii households and others who’ve skilled discrimination and scapegoating on account of President Trump’s bullying remarks and orders.”
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST TORCH-BEARERS FLAME OUT, DESPITE HIGH-PROFILE ENDORSEMENTS
Case additionally took down 29-year-old Kaniela Ing, a democratic socialist who hoped to observe within the footsteps of colleague Ocasio-Cortez of New York to attain an upset victory. Ing had Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, and the Bronx socialist candidate had stumped for Ing.
Case will face Cam Cavasso, a former state consultant who beforehand ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate.
In the meantime, Hawaii Gov. David Ige received the state’s Democratic main Saturday in his bid for a second time period, overcoming a troublesome main problem and fierce criticism after state officers despatched out a false inbound missile alert earlier this yr and left it uncorrected for greater than 30 minutes.
The ends in Hawaii, a closely Democratic state the place Republicans usually have little hope of prevailing in November, have been accompanied by some excellent news for Democrats as vote totals in earlier nationwide primaries are up to date.
Ige defeated U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who gave up her seat in Congress to run for governor. The incumbent in November will face state Rep. Andria Tupola, who received the Republican gubernatorial main.
Officers mistakenly despatched a warning of an imminent missile assault, promising “THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” to cellphones, radios and televisions on Jan. 13. Hanabusa used the false alarm as a key marketing campaign cudgel in opposition to Ige.
However the governor’s dealing with of the Kilauea volcano’s newest eruption, which destroyed greater than 700 properties and displaced 1000’s, in addition to devastating flooding on Kauai, might have improved his stature.
Additionally, Ron Curtis will face off in opposition to incumbent Sen. Mazie Hirono within the common election because the Republican Get together’s nominee to characterize Hawaii within the U.S. Senate. Hirono, who was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and have become the primary Asian-American feminine senator, is broadly anticipated to win in November.
Different main vote-tally updates
In Washington State, there was extra excellent news for Democrats: It is trying extra possible that the race for Washington’s ninth Congressional District can have two Democrats on the poll in November.
WATCH: WASHINGTON CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE AIMS TO BE THE NEXT OCASIO-CORTEZ
After King and Pierce Counties up to date their poll counts Friday night time, Democrat Sarah Smith was 2,582 votes forward of Republican Doug Basler, a major soar from her 196-vote lead the day earlier than. If her lead holds, she’ll advance together with Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented the district that features a part of Seattle for greater than 20 years.
Beneath Washington’s main system, all candidates seem on the identical poll and the highest two vote getters advance to the overall election, no matter social gathering. Washington is a vote-by-mail state and elections officers will proceed tallying ballots subsequent week.
Sarah Smith was recruited to run by Model New Congress, the identical group that backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s Democratic main this summer time.
Additionally in Washington, one other race the place votes have been nonetheless being tallied is the eighth Congressional District, the place Democrat Kim Schrier is sustaining her lead for the second spot in hopes of advancing to the overall election.
Schrier, a pediatrician, elevated her lead in up to date returns Friday over lawyer Jason Rittereiser. Republican Dino Rossi, a former state lawmaker who had unsuccessful runs for governor and the U.S. Senate, superior Tuesday to the November election.
KOBACH RECUSES HIMSELF IN KANSAS AS VOTE-COUNTING CONTINUES IN TIGHTH RACE
The 2 are looking for the seat left open by long-time incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, who’s retiring. The seat has been held by Republicans because it was created within the early 1980s. The district is amongst about two dozen throughout the nation which might be held by Republicans however whose voters selected Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump, making it a crucial potential pickup for the Democrats attempting to achieve management of the Home for the primary time since 2010.
And in Kansas, the counting of the final ballots within the tight and contentious Republican main for governor will stretch out over the subsequent week and nonetheless may not settle the race.
Trump-backed Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach leads Gov. Jeff Colyer by 110 votes out of 313,000-plus solid after late mail-in ballots from all 105 counties have been added Friday to totals from advance voting and ballots solid on the polls Tuesday.
The state’s 105 counties nonetheless should assessment practically 9,000 provisional ballots and decide what number of of them have been solid within the Republican main — and what number of might be counted. They’ve till Aug. 20 to complete that course of and certify their native outcomes.

Ige, Hanbusa evenly split state in campaign contributions
Gov. David Ige and his primary Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, are running a neck-and-neck race, based on total campaign contributions and poll numbers.
They’re also evenly dividing the state’s ZIP codes and major islands when it comes to who’s sending them checks.
That’s according to a West Hawaii Today/Hawaii Tribune-Herald analysis of $100-plus in-state contributions reported to the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission between Sept. 1, when Hanabusa set up her state campaign fund, and June 30, the most recent data reported. The next reports are due Wednesday.
Contribution amounts aren’t a clear indicator of likely votes, two political analysts caution. But in a race that one longtime political expert says is too close to call, the numbers offer a glimpse of the candidates’ support base.
“I wouldn’t bet on either candidate right now,” said Neal Milner, a former University of Hawaii political science professor who’s been following state politics for decades. “I think it’s going to go down to the wire.”
Ige and Hanabusa are racing toward a winner-take-all contest for the Democratic bid in the Aug. 11 primary, just two weeks away.
The newspaper analysis, sifting through thousands of records and pinpointing 2,306 contributions worth $2.9 million that met the criteria, doesn’t include contributions of less than $100 donated by businesses and individuals, nor the thousands of dollars being pumped into the race by super PACs, so-called “independent expenditures” that aren’t reported by candidates. It does include $100-plus contributions from unions and registered political action committees that are required to report, however.
The $2.9 million accounts for a little more than 78 percent of the total $3.7 million the candidates raised from all contributions, including out-of-state donors and contributions of less than $100.
On both Oahu and Hawaii Island, Ige leads in the number of major contributions, while Hanabusa is ahead in total dollar amount of those contributions. The mayors of both Oahu and Hawaii Island are endorsing the incumbent governor, which will likely bring more votes and more money to the candidate.
Obviously Oahu, the seat of state government, provides the bulk of campaign money to state candidates, as well as delivering most of the voters. But with Oahu voters accounting for just 67 percent of all voters who participated in the 2016 primary, the importance of the neighbor islands can’t be underestimated, especially in a close election.
Ige reported 1,115 contributions totaling $1.32 million to Hanabusa’s 958 contributions totaling $1.33 million on Oahu.
On Hawaii Island, Ige had 82 contributors to Hanabusa’s 38. But when looking at the total dollars of those contributions, Hanabusa leads, with $59,901 in contributions to Ige’s $48,668.
Hanabusa dominates both Maui County and Kauai, however, sweeping both the number of $100-plus contributions and the amount. In Maui County, which includes Maui island as well as Lanai and Molokai, 52 contributors gave Hanabusa $47,657, while 22 contributors gave Ige $28,780. On Kauai, 29 contributors gave Hanabusa $40,950 to Ige’s 10 contributors giving $12,485.
Glenna Wong, Ige’s campaign spokeswoman, said political considerations make it difficult for those two county mayors to offer endorsements. Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa is term-limited, and Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. is running for lieutenant governor and, if he wins, must work with whichever gubernatorial candidate wins.
“There haven’t been any political endorsements there, but we believe they support the governor,” Wong said. “It’s a very competitive race. We definitely feel the support on the ground, and we have seen an increase in contributions.
We’re still working and we feel the momentum building.”
Hanabusa’s campaign echoes those sentiments.
“Rather than winding down, our grassroots activities are ramping up,” Hanabusa said in a statement. “In these final weeks, our focus is on keeping this momentum going statewide because every vote counts.”
Drilling down
When it comes to the Big Island, a ZIP code level analysis shows Ige has strong money support in Hilo proper up to Honokaa, as well as Volcano, Naalehu and into South Kona. Hanabusa’s support base is in Puna and most of West Hawaii, including all of Kailua-Kona and Waimea.
Puna support could be especially critical to Hanabusa if the race remains as tight as forecast. In 2014, Hanabusa unsuccessfully sued the state Elections Office after two precincts were closed because of storm damage. This year, the Kilauea volcano and lava flows are wreaking havoc with election plans in the area.
Ige and Hanabusa split the downtown Honolulu ZIPs. After that, it gets more interesting, with Ige pulling more money from his Pearl City home base as well as Aiea, Ewa Beach, Mililani, Kunia, Wahiawa, Kahuku and Haleiwa. Hanabusa picked up her home district of Waianae, as well as Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe, Waipahu, Hauula, Kapolei and Waialua.
On Maui, Hanabusa has more money from Hana, Kula, Kahului and Wailuku ZIP codes than Ige. Ige has Kehei, Lahaina and Haiku.
On Kauai, Ige has the most contributions in one ZIP code, Kalaheo, with Hanabusa taking Lihue, Kapaa, Koloa, Eleele, Kekaha, Anahola, Hanalei and Princeville.
Money in politics
While those who contribute money to a candidate are more likely to get out and vote for that candidate, the influence of big money from political action groups and super PACs can skew the predictions.
“People who contribute money are more attuned and involved in the election,” Milner notes.
But some donors give to both candidates, as a way to hedge their bets. And especially in local races such as for county seats and the state Legislature, low-budget candidate efforts such as door-knocking and sign-waving can’t be discounted.
“You can’t just tell from the amount of money,” Milner said. “It’s really hard to tell anything about the relationship between the amount of money and the votes.
You can never just take one source out of a campaign.”
Super PACs are especially a problem because candidates are not required to report their contributions, said Dan Boylan, a retired history professor and political analyst.
“Who gives the money and who does that person benefit?” Boylan asked.
“People have a right to know who’s supporting whom and who they’re courting with their dollars.”
Super PACs are, however, required to report “electioneering communication,” meaning any advertisement broadcast on radio or television or publication in newspapers or sent by mail at a bulk rate or by electronic means within 60 days before an election, that refer to a clearly identifiable candidate and “is not susceptible to any reasonable interpretation other than as an appeal to vote for or against a specific candidate,” under state law.
Those who make electioneering communications of more than $2,000 in any calendar year are required to file a statement with the Campaign Spending Commission within 24 hours of each disclosure date.
Boylan would be happy if money played no part at all.
“Campaign money, if it’s a lot, takes a lot of people out of the ballgame,” Boylan said of otherwise solid candidates who can’t compete in fundraising. “If we really believed in democracy, we’d figure out a way to get the money out of politics.”

Solar+storage may now be cheaper than gas
By: Craig Lewis
By Craig Lewis, executive director of the Clean Coalition
Can solar+storage replace gas? A battle has been brewing in California over this question, with recent analyses suggesting that the answer is, technically, yes. What’s more, solar+storage facilities can be deployed more quickly than gas plants, at a significantly lower price.
Today’s reality is that renewable energy alternatives are technically and economically superior to new gas plants. That doesn’t make solar+storage a done deal in California, but it makes it far more likely that the state will move to renewables when considering new electrical generation.
A California face-off In Ventura County, California, state regulations require that a pair of once-through cooling gas plants be retired by the end of 2020. The plants, Mandalay and Ormond Beach, currently provide about 2,000 MW of electricity to the Moorpark Subarea, the most grid-constrained part of the Southern California Edison (SCE) service territory.
As replacements for these plants, SCE proposed building a new gas plant, the Puente Power Project, as well as refurbishing the existing Ellwood Peaker Plant.
The Puente project was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in December 2016. Since then, it has faced opposition from environmental groups and locals, who note that the area has long been subject to environmental degradation from polluting power plants. These groups welcomed a recent study by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which concluded that “preferred resource alternatives” (energy storage plus renewable energy) can in fact meet the region’s reliability needs.
Despite estimating a high price tag, CAISO asserted that a storage option would be technically feasible. And subsequent studies tell a different story about the cost of energy storage—a story in which storage is cost-competitive with gas.
Possibly the most sophisticated technical and economic analysis to date has been a study and model from the Clean Coalition. That analysis used up-to-date costs and realistic scenarios to show that the Puente and Ellwood gas plants could be replaced with solar+storage at a much lower price than what CAISO estimated—approximately $406 million in upfront costs, less than half of CAISO’s $1.1 billion figure. That’s not even accounting for the much higher costs of operations, maintenance and fuel for gas plants, or their human and environmental health costs.
Why was the Clean Coalition’s estimate so much lower than CAISO’s?
First, CAISO used 2014 prices for energy storage, which has come down more than 10% per year since then. By 2018, storage is expected to cost less than half of what it did in 2014. Second, CAISO modeled a storage-only solution, not including solar, which would bring the price down even further and allow the entire solar+storage project to benefit from the 30% Investment Tax Credit. In addition, CAISO overestimated costs for demand response.
Feasible and preferred resources Even CAISO’s finding that preferred resources are technically feasible for the Moorpark Subarea has regulators pushing to invest taxpayer dollars in clean energy.
On September 28, the CPUC voted unanimously to reject the Ellwood plant. “At this time, absent very compelling circumstances, we should be directing all of our investments in infrastructure and energy to clean energy resources,” said Commissioner Clifford Rechtschaffen.
The Puente plant is now being considered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Faced with critiques of its study, CAISO suggested in a September 29 filing to the CEC that rather than relying on studies, which “are largely academic until an actual alternative resource portfolio is procured,” we put preferred resource alternatives to a real-life test. In the filing, CAISO called for an expedited Request for Offer (RFO) to be issued to establish the economic feasibility of preferred resource alternatives to Puente.
In response, a CEC committee took the unusual step of issuing a statement announcing that it will recommend denial of Puente. While the CEC has yet to reach a final decision—and the developer, NRG, will certainly challenge the committee’s recommendation—this early statement is an indication of where things are headed.
We can bring solar+storage online quickly An expedited RFO is one way to hasten solar+storage deployment, but other methods are even more effective.
The Clean Coalition has designed a game-changing feed-in tariff (FIT) that includes a market responsive pricing mechanism to ensure the best value for ratepayers, along with a dispatchability adder to incentivize energy storage. This innovative FIT is designed to procure and deploy cost-effective renewables and energy storage much more quickly than auction processes, which are burdened by excessive preparation requirements, transaction costs, and failure rates—and a FIT approach is far faster than building a gas plant.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has already shown this can be done. SMUD launched a FIT in 2010 to develop 100 MW of distributed solar. Within two years, over 98% of the 100 MW of FIT program capacity was successfully constructed and online.
Solar+storage is already happening. Can it replace California gas plants? Solar+storage solutions are already in place and proving to be cost-effective.
Tesla’s 17 MW solar + 52 MWh storage facility on Kauai stores solar energy during the day to use at night, making solar dispatchable when it is needed rather than only when the sun is shining. AES’ 28-MW solar + 100 MWh storage facility, also on Kauai, will provide 11% of the island’s electricity needs starting next year, at a game-changing 11 cents per kWh for dispatchable solar.
Projects like these show that solar+storage is not a dream for the future. It’s viable now, and it’s being deployed now.
It remains to be seen what will happen with the gas plants in Southern California. But the latest developments in the area show that the sun is shining brightly on solar+storage.

6 of My Favorite Money Hacks
[As part of our weekly column by Mr. 1500 of 1500Days.com – a fellow blogger who retired at 43!]
******
Life is good in retirement. I’m thrilled to have a net worth of $1,900,000 which enables me to live my life on my own terms. Instead of answering to Mr. Bossman, I wake up and do whatever I want.
On some days, I’ll ride 40 miles into the mountains. On others, I’ll spend hours at the library. Money is a wonderful facilitator. Sometimes, the money even enables questionable purchases like fancy cars and human kites. But I digress

If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be this:
Never stop learning.
Once you become stuck in your ways, you become an intellectual deadbeat. Don’t do it.
I have enough money so that I no longer have to pay attention to it, but I’ll never stop learning. I discover things about money every week that surprise me and make me a better saver/investor.
Today, I’ll share some of my favorite money hacks with you. I’ll also be sharing questionable underwear choices. Don’t worry, it will all make sense. (Or worry, because there are pictures!)
Money Hack #1: Writing every transaction down
Until recently, I never kept track of my spending. A couple of years ago, I started recording every dollar that went in and out. To state that I was shocked by my spending is an understatement.
Having to answer to a spreadsheet is a powerful behavioral changer. I suggest at least partially automating the tracking which brings me to my next tip:
Money Hack #2: Using a spreadsheet to track your spending
I created a spreadsheet on Google Drive which adds up my spending as I go. Here is my real spreadsheet from April where I blew a load of money on underwear and travel:
Underwear and travel accounted for $2,000! Yikes.
If you don’t like the hassle of a manual spreadsheet, you can also use software like Mint or Personal Capital to track your dollars.
And what do I hear? You want to see what $50 underwear look like? No, I probably shouldn’t
You really want to see? OK, brace yourselves sensitive readers. It was a 3-pack:
At least I’m not wearing them in the picture.
Money Hack #3: Loving Credit Cards
I wade into dangerous territory here. Credit cards are like nukes. Use them responsibly and they do wonderful things. Use them carelessly and:
BOOM!
People ask me questions like this all of the time:
How much should I sacrifice when I’m saving for financial independence? Should I skip vacations?
You don’t have to sacrifice anything. Here is proof:
What does that have to do with anything?
I took that picture on the Eastern Coast of Kauai where I traveled with my family of four. We woke up every morning at dawn to watch the sunrise and frolic in the surf. We’d hike and snorkel in the afternoon. At night, we ate dinner on our patio, listening to the waves roll in.
In case I’m not painting the picture correctly:
It was one of the best weeks of our lives!
And the best part? All four airline tickets set us back less than $200. We were able to do this using credit card points.
Now, travel hacking is a voluminous subject. If you’re not learned in the ways of travel hacking, check out the Travel Miles 101 course (free and great!) or J’s one-on-one interview with Brad. And if you need a card, you may want to check out Mad Fientist’s credit card tool.
But wait! Before you even consider any of this, you must raise your right hand and repeat after me:
I will use credit cards responsibly! I will never, ever carry a balance!
Don’t let credit cards nuke your finances. Do let them take you to Hawaii.
Money Hack #4: Never thinking of purchases in terms of *present* value
Nothing drives me crazier than when I hear someone say this:
My new car is only $25,000.
It isn’t $25,000. Money invested in the markets typically takes less than 10 years to double. Unless you’re close to death, big ticket purchases can set you back hundreds of thousands over the long term. Think long term to fully appreciate the impact of all purchases.
Money Hack #5:  Using Personal Capital
Life is complicated, and so are your finances. Between my 401(k), savings, checking and investments accounts, I have my money in about 3,384 different places. At least it feels that way.
This problem is easily remedied with a Personal Capital account. Personal Capital aggregates all of your accounts into one place. Here is a screen capture from my own Personal Capital dashboard (it’s OK to look, no underwear pics this time):
Best of all, Personal Capital is free. Who doesn’t like free?
Money Hack #6: Studying computers
This one actually came from my grandmother three decades ago. She knew computers were going to be a “thing” and would say this to me every time I saw her:
Study computers!
My grandmother was crazy in a lot of ways, but this was some of the best advice I ever received. There are loads of unfilled computer jobs. And you don’t have to go back to college for a degree. There are boot-camps all over the United States where you can spend under a year studying and come out with a good job. Many will even refund your money if you can’t get a job.
I did this myself – dropping out of pharmacy school to attend an accelerated program. 30 weeks later, I had a great job and never looked back.
And if you’re still unsure about why you should study computers, consider how many folks in the financial independence community had jobs in high tech. Mr. Money Mustache, Mad Fientist, Go Curry Cracker!, ThinkSaveRetire
