Amazon creates business arm selling automated checkout to retailers
Amazon's Just Walk Out tech coming to a store near you soon?
Building on the publicity around its cashier-less stores, Amazon is set to roll out a new business division that will sell the technology behind Amazon Go to other retailers.
According to Reuters, the uber-retailer said it has "several" signed deals with customers it would not name. A new website is set to go live later this week that will invite retailers to inquire about the service, dubbed Just Walk Out technology by Amazon.
The move follows the retailers strategy of developing its own services to streamline its own business and improve its offering, cement it into the market, then offer it out as a lucrative third-party service to others down the line. Witness what it has done with delivery and cloud technology – in fact, some analysts believe that the Just Walk Out drive could also help push its Amazon Web Services (AWS) further into the retail sector.
In a briefing call with Reuters, Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s vice president of physical retail and technology, had no market forecast to share but said shoppers’ preferences will determine how big the business becomes.
"Do customers like standing in lines?" he asked. "This has pretty broad applicability across store sizes, across industries, because it fundamentally tackles a problem of how do you get convenience in physical locations, especially when people are hard-pressed for time."
How will it work?
According to reports, it won’t – for now – involve apps, instead shoppers will insert a credit card into a gated turnstile to enter, rather than scan an app. The turnstiles will display the logo "Just Walk Out technology by Amazon," but all other branding and store aspects will be controlled by the retailer using the service.
Items picked up by a customer and any guests who enter with them will be added to the shopper’s virtual cart. The store will then bill the credit card once the person or group leaves the store - no bar code scans or checkout lines necessary.
Kumar said Amazon will install the technology including ceiling cameras and shelf weight sensors at retailers’ stores, whether they are new locations or retrofits, and it will have a 24-7 support line.
What does everyone think?
The news has been welcomed by analysts and seen by many as the inevitable and unstoppable rise of Amazon across retail.
Hugh Fletcher, Global Had of Consultancy and Innovation, Wunderman Thompson Commerce, says: “Amazon’s latest business venture is the next step in the retailer’s quest to dominate the retail industry. Over the past few years, Amazon has expanded into several different markets, including entertainment and grocery – but has recently begun to focus on how it can innovate the in-store customer experience. It has almost single-handedly reinvented the shopping journey with its one-click delivery, next-day guarantee with Prime and first to innovate the high street with its Amazon Go checkout-less experience. And this is in response to new consumer demands; in fact, 47% of online consumers say they are excited about cashless shopping, while 39% are excited about the possibility of checkout-free stores like Amazon Go. It means that Amazon no longer has to rely on building its store network, but can instead offer its infrastructure to already established physical retailers.”
He continues: “This approach of ‘aggressive horizontality’ is all part of Amazon’s broader plan to own customer data. It has already demonstrated its ability to do so with its online marketplace, which has resulted in 72% of commerce leaders saying they need to invest more money in the platform. The latest move indicates that they plan to do the same with bricks-and-mortar retailers. This is because Amazon knows that if you own the interface, you own the customer; if you own the customer, you own the data. But most importantly, if you own the data, you own the future. And Amazon sees its future as a dominant force both online and on the high street.”
Stefan Spendrup, VP Enterprise Mobility – Northern & Western Europe at SOTI, agrees. “The news that Amazon is selling its cashier-less technology to third-party retailers is good news for both consumers and the high-street,” he says. “Retailers need to radically transform the way they engage with customers and build relationships in-store, if they want to survive. Amazon’s technology will undoubtedly help them to deliver better customer experiences and ultimately bring people back to physical stores.”
He concludes: “Cashierless payments will remove this friction and free up staff to deliver great personal service to customers while they browse instead. According to our own research, 67% of shoppers are more likely to shop at a store that integrates technology.”
Who will be responsible?
While the technology is likely to be welcomed by shoppers and may even be a much needed technological leg-up for many retailers – not least SMEs – there are issues.
For example, who will be responsible when things go wrong? According to reports on CNBC in the US, a journalist inadvertently walked out of an Amazon Go store with a shop-lifted yoghurt when the system failed to log it when she left the store.
For Amazon, it can swallow these discrepancies, but what sort of guarantees can it give to retailers using its technology should it go wrong?
There is also the question of data. If retailer embrace Amazon’s tech with alacrity then Amazon is set to get a bumper windfall of customer data on shopping habits in a wide variety of stores, potentially worldwide.
By collecting this data, Amazon will have even more access to people’s lives than they do now. This increasingly personal view into their customers’ activity will increase the need for AI-driven customer insight systems to be responsible and explainable.

1. Newcastle United has an attendance problem:
This is an interesting podcast because it covers the way that Newcastle gave away loads of tickets to try and change the atmosphere at their stadium.
It seems that the fan base is disgruntled with ownership, but I always wonder how much that would change if the team were doing well.
As a Spurs fan, Daniel Levy gets stick no matter what is happening on the pitch.
For all of us, this example bears paying attention to because if they are successful, it could show a path for using comps or discounts when a team needs a boost or using them in a way that also is a value add for season ticket holders.
I’m still not a huge fan of discounts in many cases, but I’m also always willing to look at new approaches to selling seats and getting people into the building.
2. Jets have the “first” influencer marketing program in pro sports?:
There are 3 things I want to point out here.
First, the Jets don’t have the first influencer marketing program in pro sports. If y’all remember, just a few months ago Man City got their knickers in a bunch when it surfaced that they were using influencers to try and sell out Champions League matches.
Second, none of these metrics amount to much because they are all fuzzy numbers that equate to easy to measure but not meaningful. “Engagement” and “buzz” aren’t adding money to the bottom line.
Third, working to make their games more family-friendly is likely a wise business decision. The commute back and forth to a Jets or Giants game is grueling and as the at-home experience becomes better and better, offering incentives to get people to come to games is going to be more and more necessary.
3. Should the arts be a right?:
This is an interesting story from the UK where MP Tracy Brabin writes about making the arts a right for folks.
In the US, this seems like a crazy idea…I’m certain.
We have become so disconnected from the idea of the arts as a way to gain perspective on new ideas and to understand people different than that the idea of shared art forms probably seems nuts to many of us.
In my travels around the world, I’ve seen the power of art to transform, connect, and explain.
While the idea of the arts as a right is likely to be met with some resistance, since all of us reading this have a connection to tickets and the arts in some way or form, we should be excited about this conversation taking place anywhere in the world because I think exposure to the arts is the first step in creating a healthier arts economy.
4. Baseball’s last celebrity?:
I feel like I’ve written too much about baseball the last few weeks, but then I saw this story and it got me to continue thinking about the state of the game.
I’ve got a podcast posting next week with former baseball sales executive and current professor of sports marketing, Ken Troupe, and we talked about baseball always picking to point out that their revenues are increasing.
Great!
It reminds me of a lot of retail companies that were still showing strong returns until they weren’t.
The idea that Derek Jeter might be baseball’s last true superstar isn’t as far fetched as it seems.
Despite strong revenues and attendance numbers that don’t look all that bad if you don’t look at the real turnstile count, baseball is sitting on a marketing problem. I mean, I live in DC and you could get NLCS tickets for under face value on the secondary market.
It seems to be me that baseball needs to really focus on relevance and accessibility, there is just too much inventory and too many games for the game not to focus on driving folks to go to multiple games a year and ensuring that storytelling is at the heart of the baseball fan’s experience.
5. StubHub has a waiting room to manage demand:
I know that I am sharing a case study from Queue-It. As the kids say, “don’t at me.”
But as I was reading this, I wanted to highlight how the secondary market continues to find ways to improve the customer experience and innovate around making it easier to spend money.
I know that Queue-It works with platforms on the primary and the secondary market, but I like the way that the technology is being used to manage demand and improve the buying experience, especially for high demand events.
In APAC, if I am not mistaken, the relationship between venues, content producers, and StubHub may be more symbiotic and holistic, but I really just wanted to take the time to highlight the necessity of putting the customer and their experience at the heart of all of your decisions.
Because I think that is maybe one of the most important things you can do.

Amazons Checkout-Free Tech is Heading to Other Retailers

Checkout-free, cashless supermarkets — a novelty shopping experience or the future of bricks and mortar retail? According to Amazon — which turned the concept into a 10,400-square-foot reality — it’s the latter. After announcing its plans to license its automated checkout technology to other retailers, the company has revealed it has “several” signed deals with customers, and has launched a new website inviting inquiries from others interested in the “Just Walk Out” experience.
Amazon has been operating a number of these cashless convenience stores in the US since 2018. Shoppers download the Amazon Go app, beep themselves into the store using a QR code, then simply pick up whatever they want and leave. The store’s item-tracking system knows what they’ve selected, and bills them automatically via the app. Last month, Amazon launched the first Go supermarket, where the concept has been applied to a significantly larger store and visitors are able to do an entire weekly shop, rather than just picking up necessities on the move.
So it’s clear the concept works (indeed, Reuters reports that the market for cashier-less retail could grow to $50 billion). And now, instead of keeping it for itself, Amazon plans to share it with other retailers (for a price, of course) — no doubt in a move to position itself ahead of future competition.
The venture will operate under the name “Just Walk Out.” Rather than relying on an app, shoppers will inset a credit card into a gated turnstile, which will display a “Just Walk Out technology by Amazon” logo — all other aspects of branding will be controlled by the retailer. As with Amazon Go stores, the system will recognize items picked up by customers, and bill them once they leave.
According to the Just Walk Out website, the tech can be incorporated into new build stores or retrofitted into existing spaces in a matter of weeks. Amazon will take care of the installation process, and there will be a 24/7 support line for businesses adopting the service.
In an interview with Reuters, Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s vice president of physical retail and technology, kept schtum about which companies have signed up to the service — he didn’t reveal anything on pricing, either, simply noting that “a lot of those are bespoke deals.” However, he did reiterate that Amazon’s role in the Just Walk Out experience starts and ends with the technology — the retailer is still responsible for its customers and indeed, the staff that would otherwise be operating its checkouts. Cashier-less tech has come under fire for its potential threat to jobs, but the Just Walk Out website claims the system only means that “their roles have simply shifted to focus on more valuable activities.”
Meanwhile, when it comes to data — another commonly-cited area of concern for checkout-free tech — Amazon says it only collects the information needed to provide shoppers with an accurate receipt. Who specifically owns this data, and what it could be used for, is not clear.
It does seem, however, that while Amazon wants to get ahead in a market it has arguably created for itself, it will do so with carefully-considered parameters. At this juncture, it seems that its focus for Just Walk Out technology is smaller convenience stores, such as airport shops and arena kiosks, rather than major retailers such as Walmart and Target.
While Kumar didn’t rule out the possibility of selling the tech to these kinds of rivals, it seems likely the company will want to better establish its own Just Walk Out supermarkets first before it makes the concept available to competitors. That being said, though, there are already a number of other vendors offering automated checkout systems to retailers, such as AiFi and Grabango. If cashier-less stores really are the future of retail, then other major chains won’t need Amazon’s tech to enjoy a slice of the pie.

It does seem, however, that while Amazon wants to get ahead in a market it has arguably created for itself, it will do so with carefully-considered parameters. At this juncture, it seems that its focus for Just Walk Out technology is smaller convenience stores, such as airport shops and arena kiosks, rather than major retailers such as Walmart and Target.
While Kumar didn’t rule out the possibility of selling the tech to these kinds of rivals, it seems likely the company will want to better establish its own Just Walk Out supermarkets first before it makes the concept available to competitors. That being said, though, there are already a number of other vendors offering automated checkout systems to retailers, such as AiFi and Grabango. If cashier-less stores really are the future of retail, then other major chains won’t need Amazon’s tech to enjoy a slice of the pie.

Amazon’s Checkout-Free Tech is Heading to Other Retailers
A number of partners have already signed up for the ‘Just Walk Out’ system.

Checkout-free, cashless supermarkets — a novelty shopping experience or the future of bricks and mortar retail? According to Amazon — which turned the concept into a 10,400-square-foot reality — it’s the latter. After announcing its plans to license its automated checkout technology to other retailers, the company has revealed it has “several” signed deals with customers, and has launched a new website inviting inquiries from others interested in the “Just Walk Out” experience.
Amazon has been operating a number of these cashless convenience stores in the US since 2018. Shoppers download the Amazon Go app, beep themselves into the store using a QR code, then simply pick up whatever they want and leave. The store’s item-tracking system knows what they’ve selected, and bills them automatically via the app. Last month, Amazon launched the first Go supermarket, where the concept has been applied to a significantly larger store and visitors are able to do an entire weekly shop, rather than just picking up necessities on the move.
So it’s clear the concept works (indeed, Reuters reports that the market for cashier-less retail could grow to $50 billion). And now, instead of keeping it for itself, Amazon plans to share it with other retailers (for a price, of course) — no doubt in a move to position itself ahead of future competition.
The venture will operate under the name “Just Walk Out.” Rather than relying on an app, shoppers will inset a credit card into a gated turnstile, which will display a “Just Walk Out technology by Amazon” logo — all other aspects of branding will be controlled by the retailer. As with Amazon Go stores, the system will recognize items picked up by customers, and bill them once they leave.
According to the Just Walk Out website, the tech can be incorporated into new build stores or retrofitted into existing spaces in a matter of weeks. Amazon will take care of the installation process, and there will be a 24/7 support line for businesses adopting the service.
In an interview with Reuters, Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s vice president of physical retail and technology, kept schtum about which companies have signed up to the service — he didn’t reveal anything on pricing, either, simply noting that “a lot of those are bespoke deals.” However, he did reiterate that Amazon’s role in the Just Walk Out experience starts and ends with the technology — the retailer is still responsible for its customers and indeed, the staff that would otherwise be operating its checkouts.
