"Savoring Success: Top Strategies to Promote Your Food Business"
Whether you’re running a cozy café, a bustling food truck, or a fine-dining restaurant, promoting your food business is key to attracting and retaining customers. If you’re wondering how to promote your food business effectively, there are many creative and practical ways to get the word out and keep your tables full. This guide covers essential strategies to help you bring more customers to your doorstep and keep them coming back.
1. Showcase Your Business Online
Your digital presence is often the first impression potential customers get of your business. Start with a visually appealing website that displays your menu, location, hours, and online ordering options if applicable. Include high-quality images of your dishes, as people eat with their eyes first! Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook are also perfect for food businesses. Consistently post photos of your food, behind-the-scenes kitchen shots, or even recipe teasers to engage your followers.
Encourage customer interaction by responding to comments and asking for feedback. Hashtags like #foodie, #foodstagram, and your location’s hashtag can help boost your posts and attract people looking for local food spots.
2. Collaborate with Food Influencers
Influencers in the food industry have a powerful reach. Look for local influencers or food bloggers with a loyal following and invite them to try your food. Influencer marketing helps your business get exposure to a broad audience of food lovers who trust the influencer's recommendations. Even a single post or story from a popular food blogger can spark interest in your business and encourage their followers to visit.
3. Embrace Local SEO and Google My Business
Setting up and optimizing a Google My Business (GMB) profile is a game-changer for food businesses. GMB listings help your business show up in local searches and Google Maps, which is crucial for attracting nearby customers. Update your profile with your address, phone number, website, and hours. Adding photos, responding to reviews, and using keywords like “best [cuisine] in [city]” can also improve your search ranking.
For more SEO impact, create content like blog posts, such as “how to promote your food business,” to attract readers who are researching food business strategies or new places to eat.
4. Host Food Tastings or Events
Hosting an event, whether it’s a tasting session, a live cooking demo, or a themed food night, can drive interest and bring in new customers. Events like “Wine Pairing Night” or Taco Tuesday Specials” encourage people to try something new and provide an opportunity for guests to bring friends and family along. If you have a food truck, pop-up event, or catering service, participating in local events and food festivals can introduce you to new audiences and build your brand locally.
5. Launch a Loyalty Program
Loyalty programs not only reward repeat customers but also encourage them to spread the word about your business. Set up a simple program offering points for every dollar spent, with rewards like free items or discounts after a certain threshold. Digital loyalty apps or physical punch cards can work, depending on your setup. People love feeling appreciated, and loyalty programs can give customers an added reason to choose your business over others.
6. Partner with Local Businesses
Building partnerships with other local businesses can expand your customer base. Collaborate with a nearby coffee shop, brewery, or retail store to offer combo deals or cross-promotions. For instance, a local coffee shop might offer a discount to customers who bring in a receipt from your restaurant, and you could reciprocate. These partnerships can increase your visibility in the community while creating mutually beneficial relationships.
7. Invest in Eye-Catching Packaging
Your food business’s packaging is more than a container—it’s a powerful marketing tool. Well-branded, high-quality packaging with your logo, website, and social media handles makes your food memorable and recognizable. Not only will customers appreciate the attention to detail, but they may also share photos of your unique packaging on social media, giving you added visibility.
8. Run Seasonal Promotions and Limited-Time Offers
Seasonal promotions and limited-time offers create excitement and urgency. You can introduce seasonal menu items or run a discount on certain dishes during specific times of the year. For example, a special Valentine’s Day dessert or a summer-themed drink can attract people who are eager to try something new. Limited-time offers, when marketed well, encourage customers to visit sooner rather than later.
Conclusion
Learning how to promote your food business is an ongoing process, but with the right strategies, you can attract a loyal customer base and make your business thrive. By building a strong online presence, engaging with local communities, partnering with influencers, and creating unique experiences, you can make a lasting impression on customers who love your food and will keep coming back for more.

Pastel Patisserie: A Legacy Challenge [Recovered 5/18/19]
My Pastel Patisserie challenge is back! Thank you to @strwbrrycremu for recovering the original rules and sending them my way! Since writing this challenge, a lot of new features have been added to the game. My hope is to alter this ruleset to include all of the new packs we have!
Hungry for some more berry sweet game play? Looking for a challenge that incorporates all of your EPs and GPs? Want to give your sims pastel hair colors and sugary sweet names? The Pastel Patisserie is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Pastel Patisserie is a 10 generation legacy challenge structured like the Not-So-Berry and Rainbowcy challenges, but written to incorporate aspects of recently released packs. True to The Sims series, it is filled with wacky drama and larger than life characters.
*This is something I’ve made mostly for myself, because I’ve played the first two gens of NSB over too many times and I’m sick of the scientist career.
Rules:
Like some of the other berry sweet legacies here on tumblr, each heir must represent the color or in this case, “flavor” of their generation. You can play with actual berry sims, or “banilla” sims (sims with colored hair but regular, human skin tones).
Color-coded spouses are totally optional. Personally, I think I’m going to fill a save with a bunch of berry townies to keep with the theme.
There are no money restrictions, but the challenge is probably a lot more fun if you don’t excessively use money cheats.
Your legacy is not bound to one lot for its entirety. But if you prefer your legacies to live in one house the whole time, go for it
Wanna share your progress? Use the hashtag #pastelpat

Guitars have been around for the longest time, and during the 20th century in the United States, all different kinds of music genres were beginning to shape the history of the guitar in the most prominent way. Today, there are guitar lovers all over the world, and it is one of the most recognized instruments out there. Guitars on the Beach is just one of the holidays that dedicates itself towards its love for guitars.
History of Guitars on the Beach
Guitars on the Beach began as a spontaneous event in the UK, starting as a small set up in the Lyme Regis Beach rock festival. This day made headlines as a world record was broken when 2,276 people all simultaneously played on their guitars and sang Buddy Holly 19s song Rave On. From there, the decision was made to continue this tradition, changing it from a local rock festival to a national event. Each year, people from all over go to this small beach, play in the sand, play their guitars, and listen to local bands play their favorite songs.
Guitars on the Beach isn 19t only a yearly event but is also a holiday dedicated to celebrating the history of guitars and the history of music. Fun fact: Guitars have been around since 1500 BC when the ancient Persians created the Tanbur, a four string guitar that can be played using a person 19s fingers. As an aftereffect, guitars have been around passing through ancient times, the middle ages, all right up to the notorious time when country music and rock music was created. The people that attend Guitars on the Beach festival are a small portion of the lovers of music out there, so this holiday celebrates all things related to guitars and those passionate about them, including the famous legends such as Buddy Holly, Tom Petty, and Malcolm Young.

This little-known Japanese fruit now has a cult following As the group vice president of produce and floral at the grocery store chain Albertsons, Callahan is essentially a produce trend-spotter by trade — and he’s eaten a lot of fruit. But he described Sumo Citrus as unique. “The eating experience, there’s just nothing like it,” he said. The fruit may appear unappealing at first: It looks like a small, wrinkly orange with a knob akin to the top knot worn by the Sumo wrestlers for which it’s named. But it’s actually a hybrid of navel oranges, pomelos and mandarins and tastes like an extra-sweet mandarin. It peels easily, thanks in part to that knobby handle, and doesn’t make your fingers too sticky. But Sumo Citrus didn’t go crazy in the United States, at least not right away. In the years immediately after Callahan took that first bite, the fruit’s popularity grew slowly. There wasn’t much of the fruit to go around, anyway — AC Brands, the company behind Sumo Citrus, started selling its produce here in 2011 and increased its crop over time. But as more hit stores, more sold. And then once production hit a critical mass, Callahan’s prediction started to come true. Now, once you start paying attention, it may feel like the Sumo Citrus is everywhere. That could be because over the past two years, AC Brands — confident in both its relationship with retailers and in the size of its crop — invested in a major marketing push to place Sumo in front of the right consumers. It has built (and built off) buzz from Instagram influencers, and placed splashy magazine ads and targeted billboards to attract consumers willing to shell out up to $4 per pound of fruit. Over the past year, consumers spent nearly $62 million on Sumo Citrus fruits, according to Nielsen, still a small sliver of the $2.1 billion mandarin market. To make sure people try the product — and back up that price — AC Brands has been spreading the Sumo Citrus gospel. In its branding, it nods to the fruit’s heritage and to how it’s grown (painstakingly, carefully, with attention paid to each fruit). The short selling season that could be a drawback has also been used as an upside, helping the company to build buzz. Before the fruit hits the shelves for a period from January to April and again during a brief window in the fall, the brand can generate hype, and then encourage shoppers not to miss their chance to get it. US sales have jumped around 35% each year since March 2018, according to Nielsen data. “When you walk in our stores, in a lot of cases, you’re going to see them right at the front door with a great big display,” Callahan said. “Because we know the customers are hungry for them, and they want them.” But fruit marketing can be a fickle business. People who love Sumo Citrus today might find a new fruit to love tomorrow. And professionals like Callahan are always looking for the next big thing. So AC Brands has only a little while to ensure the product has the staying power to keep selling when the next hot fruit starts to trend. Sumo comes to America Sumo Citrus is the brand name for a type of fruit called shiranui, which is commonly referred to as the Dekopon, itself a brand name, in its home country of Japan. The fruit was born in the early 1970s. By the 1990s, it had become a popular, beloved fruit in Japan, selling for as much as $10 a pop, the self-described “Fruit Detective” David Karp wrote in a 2011 Los Angeles Times article titled “The Dekopon arrives in California.” Karp described a years-long effort by American growers to get their hands on the seedlings. Some smuggled the product over and were forced to cut trees down by the government, which feared that they would spread harmful plant viruses in the country. Eventually, Suntreat, which has since become AC Brands, was able to legally set up shiranui groves in California, an effort it undertook in secret. The growers involved “had signed confidentiality and exclusive marketing agreements with Suntreat,” Karp wrote. “No one was supposed to even breathe the word ‘Dekopon.'” By 2011, the company was ready to make its secret public and to introduce the new fruit to Americans under a different name. AC Brands didn’t think that the name shiranui or Dekopon would make sense to US consumers. So it came up with something new. “The Sumo Citrus brand was created because of … what the fruit looks like,” Sunnia Gull, director of brand management at AC Brands, told CNN Business. “It’s this giant fruit” compared to a traditional mandarin, she said, with “that top knot, which is sort of like what a Sumo wrestler has in the ring.” When branding something new, like a hybrid fruit, you want to go with something that is “approachable, easy to spell [and] easy to ask for in a store,” said David Placek, founder and president of Lexicon Branding, which helps companies name products. Plus, he said, by turning that knobby top into a feature, AC Brands is taking “what would be possibly a disadvantage, the way the fruit actually looks, [and] turning that into an advantage.” Ultimately, marketers are “looking for a story,” he said — something that will explain to consumers why this product is better than the rest, and why they should buy it. The most pampered fruit in the world Sumo Citrus is “probably the world’s most pampered fruit,” said Albertsons’ Callahan. A lot goes into making sure that the Sumo Citrus fruits that reach grocery stores are tasty enough to convince customers that they’re worth the price. “The trees are hand-pruned and trimmed,” said Gull. “The skin of the Sumo Citrus is actually so delicate that there’s this sort of clay that is put on, a sunscreen, over the summer,” for protection, she said. “We’re talking about every piece of fruit,” she emphasized. Each fruit is hand-picked and packed in pallets to make sure they don’t bruise on the way to stores. Other, sturdier citrus fruit don’t need quite as much attention. Scaling that process up could be challenging, said Roland Fumasi, a food and agribusiness research analyst at Rabobank, an agriculture focused bank. People won’t spend on a pricey fruit if they’re disappointed by the product. “You have to be careful that your quality control is maintained.” And, he noted, there’s a careful balance of supply and demand for AC Brands to consider, as there is for any product. Grow too little and it could miss out on potential sales. Grow too much and it might have to cut prices — or watch as that pampered fruit rots unsold. Influencers and New Yorker ads Some people may have first learned about Sumo Citrus through the Instagram of Eva Chen, director of fashion partnerships at Instagram and an influencer in her own right with 1.6 million followers. Chen has been raving about the fruit online since 2019. One recent photo shows Chen in her classic #evachenpose — feet casually up on the back seat of a car, with shoes, purse and a snack, often a fruit, on display — with a Sumo mandarin. One post from last year shows Chen illustrated in the manner of the surrealist artist Magritte, a floating Sumo blocking her bowler hat-topped head. Another shows her pulling a stack of Sumo Citrus crates, looking stylish in an Oscar de La Renta top and Chanel flats. The all-caps, multi-exclamatory caption reads “SUMO CITRUS FOR THE WHOLE OFFICE!!!” Chen’s initial interest in Sumo was “all organic,” Gull said. “There was nothing paid around that.” But over the past few years Sumo has started paid partnerships with influencers in an effort to reach more millennials. Online, influencers with slim bodies and wide smiles post photos of themselves with the fruit, promising giveaways. They often use the hashtag #healthyobsession, positioning the fruit as a health food. Sumo also sent Jenna Fischer, known for her role as Pam on “The Office,” a tree of her own. On the Sumo Citrus instagram account you can see a smiling Fischer kneeling beside the young tree, sporting a bright orange “Sumo Citrus” beanie. AC Brands declined to say how much it spends on marketing. In addition to social media campaigns, it has launched targeted ads to reach high-income individuals — those who might not bat an eye over the cost of the fruit. “We partnered with New Yorker magazine as well as Bon Appetit,” Gull said. “There’s electronic vehicle charging stations outside some key retailers, we’re advertising there and testing that,” she said. Sumo has also posted small billboard advertising in Boston, LA and Minneapolis, “key” markets where Sumo consumption grew last season. AC Brands also distributes marketing materials to retailers to help advertise the product in stores. Last year, it introduced new purple displays to grocers. Sumo also holds a contest, with prizes, for retail partners that have put together the most creative in-store display. Getting top billing in the grocery aisle Creating buzz online is one thing. Making a splash in grocery stores is an entirely different challenge. That depends in large part on convincing retailers to place products in highly-visible, well-trafficked locations. A big, prominent display can encourage people who may not have heard of the fruit to try it. At Stop and Shop, which has been carrying Sumo Citrus for over four years, customers can often find the product near the front of the produce section, said Joe Connolly, the chain’s category manager for produce. “If we brought them in and we just displayed them in the citrus section, amongst everything else, they’d probably be lost,” he said. So far, the strategy is working. “Each and every year we’ve been selling more and more of them,” he said. That doesn’t mean it’ll work forever. Sumo Citrus is starting to see competition. Fowler Packing, which sells mandarins under the Peelz brand, announced last month that it is adding a Dekopon product to the Peelz portfolio, which is already well known among mandarin lovers. Trinity Fruit Company, which sells peaches, pomegranates and mandarins among other fruit, recently started selling Big Honey Dekopons. Big Honeys, which have the same taste profile as Sumo Citrus, have gotten some buzz in niche markets: Earlier this year, the Produce Moms blog named the Big Honey one of the its 21 Must-Try Produce Items in 2021, after the “plumsicle” but ahead of the PinkGlow Pineapple, which is pink on the inside. And one day, Sumo Citrus could be dethroned by an even trendier citrus. Items that were hot one year can go out of vogue, and grocers have no reason to try to revitalize the sale of a flailing product — they can just move on to the next big disruptor in the space. It’s happened before, Albertsons’ Callahan said. “Seeded watermelons used to be the watermelon to buy,” he said. “And we were able to develop a seedless watermelon, and all of a sudden the seedless watermelon basically took over.” (Of course, trends can be cyclical: seeded watermelons are starting to make a comeback, he noted.) Another example? Red apples, which have been squeezed by more popular varieties. “There’s so many apples that are better than red apples today. Honeycrisp really changed the apple industry, it was really that first apple that just exploded across the country.” Already, Callahan is excited about a new product. “We’ve got this new lemon plum that we’re just starting to get ahold of that we’ve had really for the last couple of years,” he said. “It’s certainly not something that’s across the country and every one of our stores, but it’s really gaining popularity,” he said. “That’s one that I can see coming on.” Source link Orbem News #cult #Fruit #Japanese #Littleknown

What do you get pleasure from drawing probably the most
I very a lot loved the problem of drawing meals I wouldn’t usually draw. Oysters for instance, I need to say, had been by no means on the prime of my to-do checklist, nevertheless I believe I can now say if ‘Oyster Anatomy; an intimate glance’ occurred to be a subject at pub trivia, I’d be going residence with the meat tray.
How did you get began?
By testing my dad and mom’ persistence as a toddler. Things had been drawn on that shouldn’t have been drawn on, utilizing issues that shouldn’t have been used to attract with. I referred to as it my ‘experimental phase’, my dad and mom’ referred to as it their ‘blue phase’.
Who or what has impressed you?
For this guide, breakfast, lunch and dinner (aaand the various snacks in between) turned edible inspiration. Humble snack expeditions to the fridge started to take slightly longer because it reworked into 5 cabinets of (at some instances, decomposing) reference. A mere sandwich was by no means escorted to my mouth with no notepad as witness.I’ve a spatially inconvenient behavior of amassing massive quantities of youngsters’s image books, from which I additionally draw nice inspiration. A truth the shelving part of my native IKEA can attest to. Some discover inspiration in Tolstoy; I discover inspiration in Toy Story
.Do you want to paint in your designs or choose to have others do this? Others! THE HYPE BEHIND STARBUCKS’ PUMPKIN SPICE LATTÉ
Alexa Ferraiuolo
In a matter of minutes after Starbucks opened the doors with their “fall season-long” menu motto, bloggers went wild.
Each fall, millions of people run to their local Starbucks to chug 380 calories of espresso spiced with pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove. According to nielson.com, this addictive, sixty-two-grams-of-sugar seasonal drink, the Pumpkin Spice Latte, has earned $488.7 million just from August 2017 to August 2018. Most Starbucks enthusiasts buying their first or fifth coffee of the day do not realize that they contribute to the 350 million Pumpkin Spice Lattes that have been sold since the company first founded the drink in 2003.
Others, however, know exactly what they are supporting—the Orange Sleeve Society. In 2015, the Pumpkin Spice Latte Twitter account (@TheRealPSL) introduced a secret society for the PSL cult. Although many believe that this is an exclusive fandom, the public can quickly join in on the fun without having to memorize all of the ingredients for a Buzzfeed quiz. There is an online link which sends customers their very own orange coffee-cup sleeve modeling the “PSL TEAM” logo after they share the new accessory with a friend online.
While offering a limited-edition drink could steer away some who may not want to invest their money into a latte that makes an appearance one-fourth of the year, this could also invite caffeine lovers to keep coming back.
Starbucks added the PSL to the menu late August. As we can infer, Starbucks will gain more money faster by encouraging the population to hurry and open their wallets. Additionally, they will attract massive media attention that even Forbes, an American business magazine, will publish their feats.
According to Forbes.com, “By introducing its pumpkin spice drink earlier than in the past, Starbucks is aiming for three outcomes: customers pay at least one more visit to its retail shops, customers spend more by buying a sandwich or muffin with the latte, and so many publications write about the latte that Starbucks reaps a phenomenal amount of free publicity.”
The PSL Twitter account has 104.6K followers. By coming across one post on your feed captioning “#pumpkinspicelatte,” which, on Instagram, 501K people have used, you may decide that it is finally the day that you will try “that pumpkin drink.”
On the other hand, as of August 2019, some bloggers suggest that the PSL is losing its buzz after seventeen years. A tracking study conducted by The Daring Kitchen found 10,000 tweets related to the latte by the end of August 27th, the first day back on the market, compared to last year’s 100,000.
The study has also monitored the use of PSL hashtags on Twitter, which tells the researchers what state they were inspired from. Minnesota, Colorado, and Kansas attracted the most tweets. This is not surprising, as two out of three of these western states have undesirable fall to winter weather conditions, which definitely call for hot coffee. Only three states house the majority of die-hard fans of the PSL, which means that fourteen states have overall low to zero interest in the festive drink. This leaves the remaining states somewhere at a healthy medium.
What is the fate of the PSL? The same world of social media that gets things trending also takes part in “cancel” culture, or the philosophy of disowning trends, celebrities, or social-media influencers when they do something controversial or become uninteresting. In short, anything can change in a day. However, thousands are proud to ignore the PSL haters and walk the streets with their favorite Starbucks drink—and cup warmer—in hand.

This is definitely usually through with a trackable link or unique coupon computer code to guarantee mouse clicks basically translate into sales. Since Make Money On Instagram doesn’t yet allow links anywhere outside of your bio, you can only focus on one product at a time if you choose to rely on affiliate links, making promo codes a better option for Make Money On Instagram since you can actually incorporate them into your posts.

By now it could sound like the only way for the Make Money On Instagrammer to make money is always to offer out and deal with other models.
But builders of all kinds are inside a fantastic place to "offer out" using unique services: realgoods and services, or online digital things which can be an extension on their product, constructing a enterprise with the target market at its hub.
You need to invest some time upfront, but in today’s world it’s almost natural for creators to make the leap into entrepreneurship.By selling your own stuff, you don't need to worry about integrating messages from other brands into your posting strategy. Better yet, you will get your personal brand name nowadays in the systems you offer.
Supporters can display their love and support the work by buying from yourself-an acquisition they may feel better about.
There are many ways to begin this:

You can list your photos in marketplaces like 500px or Twenty20 where brands and publishers might license them if photography is what got you into the Make Money On Instagram game in the first place.

Companies like Printful and Teelaunch can let you add your photographs on paper prints, cellular phone situations, special pillows, and better, maintaining rewarding sales and support service so all you will need to stress about is getting revenue.
Take the story of Daniel Arnold who went from “eating toast 3 meals a day”, according to an interview on Forbes, to making $15K in a single day by offering to sell prints of his popular-but-controversial photos. All you need to do is take the initiative and offer your audience the opportunity to buy your photography from you if you've already got the demand.
Do it towards the 'Gram (and become settled)

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Nick Fortosis of Geo 101 Design, a brand that sells cork mapsSome stats:Product: Cork MapsRevenue/mo: $2,000Started: October 2017Location: Zeeland MichiganFounders: 1Employees: 0Hello! Who are you and what business did you start? My name is Nick Fortosis and I am the founder of GEO 101 Design, a company that specializes in creating one of a kind cork maps with modern minimalist aesthetics. Our goal is to turn your love of travel into your own personalized home décor.Founded in late 2017, I run the business by myself and manufacture everything in my garage workshop in West Michigan. We have been steadily growing and are currently doing roughly $2000 a month in sales through our website and our Etsy shop.imageWhat's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?I am an engineer by day, but ever since I graduated college, I found myself looking for something to do in the evenings that didn’t involve sitting on the couch watching television or playing video games. I started exploring woodworking and soon found a way to combine it with my electronics background through CNC machining.I purchased a CNC router kit and put it together in my basement. After I had it up and running I was left with the realization that I didn’t have anything in mind to make with it! I slowly found little projects to make and started to increase my creative skill sets. I began to think about what I could make to sell, but still didn’t have any ideas that seemed to fit.I made some marble hexagon coasters for my wife for our anniversary. While they didn’t use the CNC, they were simple to make and were trendy at the time. I decided to sell some on Etsy. I was pretty paralyzed with indecision and lack of confidence in creating a product with my CNC so I used this as an opportunity to dip my toe in the water with a low risk product (started with $200 in supplies and have bootstrapped everything after that). It was slow for the first two months but then it took off (after adding professional photos). In the first nine months I ran that store (it was called Geometrikos Design), I had over $15k in sales. I put the shop on hold for the birth of my first child and started things up again a few months later, but by that time, people had caught on to how to make them and several competitors had popped up. It wasn’t completely detrimental to my business as I had a better product and a streamlined production process, but the newcomers were pricing theirs too low to compete with (a common problem on Etsy). While I was still profitable and making sales, I was ready to find something with a bigger moat and bigger profit margins, so I shut the shop down permanently. As this was going on, I still found time to tinker with my CNC. Once my friends caught on to what my machine was capable of, the requests started pouring in. Many of them are avid travelers, and wanted something to show off their travels, so I started cutting maps for them out of plywood. They looked pretty good, but weren’t very functional (needed nails to attach pictures or souvenirs) or very unique. This is when I got the idea to try and cut one out of cork. Cork is more visually interesting than plywood, plus cork is sustainably harvested and eco-friendly.imageTake us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.I have a rather unorthodox method of designing a new product. I need to establish my constraints first. So I started with what my limitations were and worked backwards until I could configure a product to meet those restrictions. My biggest constraint was time. By then we were awaiting the birth of our second child and to maintain a work/life balance (since this is in addition to my day job), I started to give myself time constraints. I wanted to create a product and run my business using less than 4 hours a week. So the goal for me was to try and make as much money in as little time as possible. This is where the CNC shines. While the coasters needed significant physical labor, for my maps I could program the CNC and have it run while I worked on something else, potentially doubling my output. I spent a lot of time optimizing my design so it would cut faster and with a better finish. Then came the pricing. I didn’t even make a prototype before I ran the numbers and found a material and price point I felt would be profitable and competitive. I used the popular pricing formula of (material + labor costs) x2 for wholesale and x4 for retail. If the end number was too high, I would look for ways to either make it faster or find cheaper materials.Describe the process of launching the business.Towards the end of my marble coaster days, I simply added my first US cork map to my Etsy shop. It didn’t fit the shop theme, but I just needed to see if it could sell. Within 3 weeks I had my first sale. I only sold 1-2 maps a month that winter (late 2017 to early 2018), but as it started to increase in early spring, I began to look outside of Etsy where I could have more control of my product and audience.imageIn February of 2018 I bought a domain and started my website using Shopify. It was really slow at first. I was completely responsible for directing traffic to the site and I was not very good at it. My first design of the site looked cool to me, but it was not set up to convert well. I was almost going to give up on it, but I did a small redesign with a more straightforward style, and I started getting sales, mainly through my instagram account. Not many at first, but enough to prove that my product could sell.On a whim I posted a picture of my maps on reddit. My daily website traffic that day exploded from 20ish visitors to over 1500! While many of the visitors were more curious than looking to buy, I really didn’t make any money off of the extra traffic, but it did open up some unique connections.Shortly after my post, I was contacted by Touch of Modern, a popular men’s fashion/flash sale site. They wanted to feature my maps in an upcoming campaign. The catch was that I needed to have over 50 maps created and ready to ship before the sale started. I think I had only $1500 in my account at the time but I decided to go for it and spent $1200 on material to boost my inventory (I usually keep little or no inventory and make maps to order). The sale went live in June and I sold a grand total of 8 maps. At first I was pretty disappointed, but it ended up being a blessing in several ways.First, was it forced me to streamline my process. I was able to iron out all of the kinks in production and found a few tricks that significantly reduced my cycle time. Second was it gave me a healthy inventory which came in handy a month later when a bike accident left me with a broken collar bone and five broken limbs. Instead of trying to make maps with one arm and on pain meds, all I had to do was slap a shipping label on the box and set it out for pickup. Without that inventory I would have had to shut down my shop for 2 months while I recovered.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?First and foremost, I believe professional photos are absolutely essential to getting people interested in a product. Without them most ads are going to be completely useless and social media accounts will be dead on arrival. My instagram posts brought in a lot of initial business. I made sure to engage and like and comment on my followers posts and hashtags I followed. I found a lot of interest in National Park lovers and hikers, so I would find popular accounts and engage with the commenters on their posts.imageI also started offering custom maps, since my CNC can basically cut any shape. I currently use an embedded Google form, but am working on a more streamlined approach.imageI tried Facebook ads a few times, but even with doing research, my campaigns all fell flat. I got to the point where I had to admit that I am just not good at writing ad copy and am basically gambling with my ad money. I found Google Shopping ads much more successful and easy to use. No copy or creative content is necessary, just a product photo. I started using Shopping ads right before the 2018 holiday season and my orders exploded. I was getting an ROI of over 300%.imageThis last spring I tried out Instagram influencers with varied success. I had a few that I was able to turn a profit on, but it was pretty modest and the work to find and vet them was too time consuming, plus subsequent shoutouts from the same accounts produced diminishing returns.imageHow are you doing today and what does the future look like?My goal has always been to double revenue year over year. We are on track to double our sales this year and get to $30k annual revenue, and hope to grow to 60k next year. While everything is great now, I worried that I would soon hit a wall where my mediocre marketing skills would hold me back.imageI recently contracted a local marketing firm to help increase my sales. My budget is on the low side ($500 a month) but the hope is to ramp up slowly and take advantage of the holiday surge and position GEO 101 Design to continue its growth rate into 2020.The biggest challenge I am facing now is designing a cork map of the world. I get custom order requests for it weekly, yet it has proved very difficult to design a map that matches the quality and detail of my other maps and still be reasonably priced. Just this week I think I had a breakthrough with a new material supplier and if it proves out, I hope to have something ready for production by mid-September, so stay tuned!I am also trying to create products at different price points. My current maps are high quality and have prices to match. I want to be able to offer something cheaper that may be an easier impulse buy. I also get a lot of requests from companies looking for very large maps (8ft+ wide), so I hope to figure out the logistics and necessary tools to make and ship larger products as well.In anticipation for the Holiday season and future growth, I have slowly been assembling a second CNC router. This will effectively double my capacity without adding any more to my weekly time allotment. According to my calculations, I should be able to scale to roughly $116k in annual sales before I need to seriously expand or modify my work schedule. The last thing I am working on is getting my website to generate more revenue than my Etsy shop. Last year it was roughly 30/70, but now I am approaching 50/50. At this point Etsy is easy money so I won’t shut it down, but I stopped paying for ads and now push all new people to my website instead.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Running a business like mine is definitely a learning by doing exercise. The problems and obstacles I have faced, I never could have predicted. For example, the first year I had a large amount of maps that arrived at their destination broken or damaged.I had to scramble and figure out how to pack them better. There really weren’t any resources I could find that had packaging tips or guidelines, so I basically had to keep adding padding and protection until the complaints stopped. Thankfully I finally figured it out and have had only 1 damaged map this year so far, but it took a lot of unforeseen work to get to this point. You will never be able to predict all of the problems you will face, you just have to get started and deal with them as they come. It's also very important to price your product wisely, leaving plenty of margin to account for unquantified costs. You are going to have to deal with customer returns, raw material price increases, fraud, shipping rate hikes, electricity, gas, and dozens of other costs you never planned on. You don’t want any of these things to sink your business so you need to give yourself a cushion from the very beginning. I believe the formula I listed above is a good start, but each business is unique so do what works for you. What platform/tools do you use for your business?I have used Shopify ever since I began using my own domain. I have kept my toolset pretty minimalistic. To be honest, I think most of the third party Shopify apps are pretty overrated for businesses just starting out in ecommerce.I have no doubt they can help optimize and increase conversion rates, but if you don’t have a solid product and good understanding of all of the built-in tools Shopify has, the extra plugins aren’t going to make up for it.What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I’ll try and avoid the obvious ones that seem to get cited here over and over (for example, How I Built This)I have always closely followed the maker movement, which has influenced a lot I do. The Making It podcast is a great resource on setting up a shop and getting started selling your product. The Made for Profit podcast is even more focused on the business side of making, though they spend a lot of time talking content creation instead product creation.A book that I really enjoyed but I haven’t seen mentioned here is called “Boss Life: Surviving My Own Small Business”. It is the journal of an owner of a small woodworking business and goes into great detail about the day to day challenges of running a small business.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Fail quickly. Don’t worry about setting up the perfect website and the perfect product on day one. Focus on getting a minimum viable product to market as quickly as possible. And when you fail, figure out why and learn from it. Avoid just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. Your chance of success should grow over time if you continually improve and recalibrate based on your mistakes and failures. This also goes for money. You don’t need a huge bankroll or enormous inventory to get started. Bootstrapping your business can be slow going, but the risk and stress you avoid is worth it and helps you grow sustainably. Plus it makes you think before you spend. Throwing money at problems rarely fixes them at this stage.Where can we go to learn more?https://www.geo101design.com/https://www.instagram.com/geo101design/https://www.facebook.com/geo101design/[email protected] you have any questions or comments, drop a comment below!Liked this text interview? What Are The Top Challenges Facing the Travel Industry In 2019?
Previously, here at SiteVisibility, we’ve made predictions for some of the major challenges we expected retailers and hotels to face in the year ahead. We had a great response to each of these blog posts with both proving extremely popular and as such, we thought we’d follow up with similar posts for 2019. The travel industry is one that is going through major disruption and so this time round, I’m going to be investigating the top challenges facing the travel industry in 2019. In this blog post, I’ll be covering: Social media and reputation management The decline of high street travel agents The popularity of sharing economies and peer to peer travel The importance of voice search Google’s monopoly of the online travel space Read on to discover in more detail the top challenges facing the travel industry this year. 1) Social Media and Reputation Management For most of us, booking a holiday is a huge expense and an event that we wait all year for. If you’re anything like me, it also entails painstakingly planning every detail of your itinerary right down to the minute. Anything that remotely jeopardises this has the potential to provoke a highly emotional reaction (we’ve all seen those old episodes of Airline). Be it a delayed flight, an inadequacy with your travel operator or a less than satisfactory hotel service, in years gone by we’d be forced to wait until we returned from holiday to write a letter or an email of complaint. Then along came Twitter. Suddenly, we were able to share our bad experiences and dissatisfaction with airlines, hotels and tour operators on a large, public platform. To some extent, we’ve come to expect the usual, low level, everyday complaints, such as flight delays, made via social media and often, these social outbursts aren’t enormously damaging to the reputation of the company in question. But then there’s the next level blunders which are damaging. They’re the big daddy of PR crises. The full-on ‘OMG THEY DID WHAT’ situations which quickly escalate like social media wildfire. Few industries have suffered as many of these publicly harmful social media gaffes than the airline sector and last year presented some particularly high-profile cases. Take United Airlines, which became a social media sensation for all the wrong reasons when a video of a passenger being forcibly removed and dragged from an overbooked flight went viral. As such, the incident was picked up by all the major news outlets and seriously damaged United’s reputation. In fact, it was documented so much that there’s even a Wikipedia page covering it and according to the page, one video that captured the incident was shared 87,000 times and viewed 6.8 million times in less than a day. The incident also led to Yelp users, outraged at what they’d seen, give United Airlines low ratings in Chicago and San Francisco among other cities. Pretty bad huh? And this wasn’t even the first incident involving United. Only a few weeks prior, United was the subject of a social media backlash after it prevented two girls wearing leggings from boarding a flight, causing the hashtag to trend on Twitter. Another incident doing the rounds on Twitter, again concerning United Airlines, was that of a dog dying on a United flight. This occurred following the cabin crew’s instruction that the dog be put in the overhead bin. Naturally, once again, social media was ablaze with criticism and outcry. Not a good year for United… Ryanair was similarly in the spotlight recently when a passenger was captured on video being racially abusive to another passenger. The clip racked up millions of views on social media. In response, Ryanair released a single line statement via Twitter which many PR experts deemed inadequate. The fact of the matter is, situations like this can no longer be contained or muted. Airlines, and other services in the travel industry, need to make sure they are adequately prepared to manage their reputation in the event of a PR crisis in 2019. Otherwise, as the famous saying goes, it can take minutes to ruin a reputation which has taken a lifetime to build. The only difference being, in an era of Twitter, those minutes equal mere milliseconds. So what steps can those working in the travel industry take to help them manage their reputation online? Here are my quick tips for online reputation management: Actively engage with reviews online, even if they aren’t positive. Monitor and engage with those talking about your brand on social media. Platforms and tools such as Google alerts, Social Mentions and Reputology can help you do this. You obviously won’t be able to engage with every Tweet or Facebook post, so learn when to respond and when not to. Be transparent and open to feedback and criticism. Avoiding negative press will only come back to bite you in this day and age. If your company does mess up, fail or do something wrong – own it and offer a genuine apology to anyone affected. Remain polite and authentic in any online communications or conversations. 2) The Decline of High Street Travel Agents Who remembers booking a holiday before the world wide web? When you’d have to – brace yourself – enter into a real-life dialogue with a real-life human person at a real-life travel agent? The horror. Gone are the days of flicking through a brochure and taking the travel agents word as gospel. As are, thankfully, the days of keeping your fingers crossed the travel agents hadn’t strategically removed the building site next to your hotel from the marketing shots. Yes, the internet has changed things drastically. We can now shop around ourselves for the best deal on the likes of booking.com or lastminute.com, as well as read reviews on TripAdvisor to inform our decision making. We can also avoid face to face conversations, interacting via new technologies such as live chat and chatbots instead. With this unrelenting shift to digital, high street travel agents have taken a big knock. According to a report from the Local Data Company, 700 high street travel agents went out of business in 2017 due to overwhelming online competition. This is supported by research from RSM group which discovered only 1 in 5 people booked their holidays at a brick and mortar travel agents in 2017. Granted, this is hardly new or exclusive to 2019. However, the trend for booking holidays online continues to be a challenge the high street travel agent, especially independent chains, must navigate. Younger generations, in particular, are unlikely to have ever step foot inside a travel agent and feel more at ease booking online. Chatbots, specifically, tap into millennial’s need for instant gratification and they generally prefer this form of communication above any other. Travel booking website Expedia are an example of a company which utilises this technology. For instance, Facebook users can book flights via their Facebook messenger app. It presents the user with the 5 most popular hotel options in their chosen location. By clicking any of the hotels suggested, the user is then redirected to the Expedia website where they can book directly. Following a transaction, the user receives a message within messenger with a link to their itinerary. Simple stuff. That said, some believe that we shouldn’t write off the high street travel agent in favour of online competition just yet. Exciting initiatives such as VR and immersive content are just a few ways travel agents are luring people back in store. For instance, in 2018 Thomas Cook offered holidaymakers the chance to experience destinations like Greece, Singapore and New York via VR headsets made available in store. As a result, the travel agent saw a 40% return on investment. Particularly impressive, was their visualisation of New York City which saw a 180% uptick in conversions. If you’re a high street travel agent, here are just a few other ways you can compete with your online peers: Online travel agents are successful as they cater to today’s need for immediate gratification, as well as offering a seamless approach to travel research, booking and payment. Ensure your payment process is similarly streamlined by introducing mobile and online payment methods. As the saying goes – “strength in numbers”. Make mutually beneficial relationships with other industry players to strengthen your travel service offering and increase your reach/customer base. Encourage customers to write online reviews and testimonials about their experience of booking in store. 3) The Continued Popularity of Sharing Economies & Peer to Peer Travel According to cmo.com “the sharing economy has disrupted the travel and hospitality industry almost as much as the arrival of the internet affected the way airlines and travel agencies do business”. Also known as swap and share experiences, the sharing economy refers to the collaborative consumption of goods using a peer to peer service. It is often significantly cheaper than purchasing a similar product/service from a well-known business. Airbnb is the most obvious and successful example of this. Rather than stay in a recognised hotel chain, travellers can instead opt to stay in someone’s home – at a fraction of the cost. Other alternative accommodations, such as CouchSurfing and TrustedHousesitters (which caters specifically to animal lovers), are also chipping away at online travel agents and hotels. Indeed, a 2017 report suggests the threat posed to hotels and online travel agencies by Airbnb is bigger than first thought and is forcing hotels to up their game. For some online travel companies such as Expedia, it’s a case of ‘keep up or get left behind’. In 2015, the company purchased HomeAway – a holiday rental marketplace which allows customers to search for vacant holiday homes internationally. All the same, whilst these kind of platforms are increasingly popular, there will always be individuals who prefer the security and luxury of a hotel stay and have the means to do so. Of course there will. However, the clever folk at Airbnb know this and are hot on their heels. In 2018, to mark its 10-year anniversary, Airbnb launched Airbnb Plus. This new hotel-like service offers high end accommodation and allows the company to compete more easily with hotels. It differs from ordinary Airbnb as hosts must fulfil criteria and a set of amenities typically found in a hotel, plus they are expected to have a 4.8-star rating or higher. Interestingly, Airbnb now officially recognises and classifies boutique hotels and B&Bs on its platform. Whilst this may appear at odds with a brand which values smaller, intimate accommodation, Airbnb’s hotels program manager has reiterated that mass produced hotels will not be listed. If you’re particularly concerned about challenges to the hotel industry, we’ve written about this in more detail here. We’ve also examined ways Airbnb are designing for trust in their marketing. Go on, give it a read. 4) Voice Search Digital marketers have been drumming this stat (now a classic) into the brains of anyone who will listen for the past couple of years: By 2020, at least 50% of all searches will be voice orientated. There’s no doubt that if you’re not already prepared for voice search, then you should be. The travel sector, in particular, need to be well equipped for this. Why? Many reports are emerging which suggest that voice search is especially relevant to those planning or researching a holiday. Travelport’s 2018 Digital Traveller Research, for instance, found that 36% of UK travellers use voice search to research travel. Similarly, according to Microsoft, British travellers are increasingly researching accommodations through their Cortana Digital Assistant on mobile devices. Indeed, they discovered that hotel searches in 2018 increased 343% year over year and flight searches increased by 277%. Considering the above, if travel businesses aren’t ready for voice search this could be detrimental to their performance online. In order to flourish, rather than flounder, there are many things travel companies can do. Firstly, it’s important to understand that there is a difference in the way people search with their voice compared to typing. An ordinary typed search is usually limited to a couple of keywords whereas there’s a tendency for voice searchers to use several words or complete sentences – often in the form of questions. If fact, they might even have discussions with their device. Therefore, content on travel websites should be optimised to reflect this more conversational tone and utilise long tail keywords. In order to answer these voice search queries, it is good practice to gather data through CRM systems, customer surveys and common questions asked by customers. Also, as young people have been identified as the demographic more likely to use voice search, this might steer which content online travel companies should focus on first. For instance, an online travel agent might optimise content targeted at young solo travellers and couples. Some businesses in the travel sector are already being proactive and experimenting with voice search in an interesting way. Heathrow was the first airport in the UK, for example, to launch an Amazon Alexa skill last year. The Heathrow software allows consumers to download up to date flight information to their Echo device, free of charge. This flight information can be checked simply by users voicing their query out loud. Who knows, fast forward a few years and Heathrow airport may have added flight booking and secondary services via voice? 5) Google’s Monopoly of the Online Travel Space Google Flights, Hotels, Maps and Trips – It’s no secret that the search giant has slowly encroached on, and continues to expand into, the online travel space. The launch of Google Flights and the ability to book directly from the SERP’s has, in particular, been an industry gamechanger. Fans of Google Flights hail it for being clean, ad free and fast compared to Skyscanner and other flight search aggregation sites. More crucially, however, Google Flights tends to feature right at the top of the SERP’s which leaves less real estate on the front page for travel companies providing a similar service. This is something the company has come under intense scrutiny and criticism for. Having been slapped with a hefty fine in 2017 for abusing its market dominance as a search engine by giving an illegal advantage to a Google product (it’s comparison shopping service), some argue that Google should be liable for a similar fine for its dominance in the travel sector. Bobby Healy is one such critic who believes that due to the way Google displays its results for flights the consumer inevitably uses their service first, despite Skyscanner and Kayak et.al providing a better service. It’s not just flights that Google are targeting. Another product in Google’s travel product offering is Google Trips. Gmail or G Suite users can organise their travel plans and group travel related information in one easy to access place. Any incoming emails with travel related content (flights, hotel, car rentals, event tickets) are automatically detected. Beyond the data that it extracts, Trips also goes one step further by making recommendations based on your itinerary. Those who are committed and loyal to the brand tend to applaud the fact it can be integrated with other Google products such as Google Calendar and Google Now. Clearly, Google is making significant inroads in the travel sector. At present, it’s common for holidaymakers and travellers to use various platforms such as, Skyscanner, Airbnb, Expedia and TripAdvisor to inform and book their holiday. In the future, however, it might be that we research, plan and book an entire trip via Google. So, what can those who aren’t Google do to start defending themselves against the search giant? Well, one obvious thing Google lacks compared to other online travel providers is that human element. Consider, for instance, the difference between Airbnb and Google Trips. Airbnb offers context, insight, recommendations and opportunities for authentic connections with real people (which is ultimately what travel is all about, isn’t it?). Google, on the other hand, is all about automation and algorithms – its Trips product offers recommendations based on high search volume terms. Airlines and other travel providers can use this to their advantage and build a brand which emphasises human connection in the travel experience.
