The awards programme recognises the best purchasing propositions in the respective categories of the new vehicle market.

“Vehicle purchases are amongst the biggest that consumers are likely to make in their lifetime,” said Ghana Msibi, executive head of sales and marketing at WesBank.

“Initiatives such as this offer credible opinions on the types of cars and features available in the market, and in so doing help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a new or used vehicle,” he said.

The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.

All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.

Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.

The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.

“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.

“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.

“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”

And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.

Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.

Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.

Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.

Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.

Crossovers accounted for 90% of Buick’s US sales last year, and with statistics like that, it makes sense that Buick will soon stop selling sedans altogether. But before that happens, Buick needs to bolster its SUV lineup. That’s where the Encore GX comes in.

It might sound like just a trim level of the subcompact Encore crossover, but the GX is in fact an entirely new vehicle, riding on a platform shared with the Chevrolet Trailblazer — for better or worse. It squeezes in between the ever-so-slightly smaller Encore and the ever-so-slightly larger Envision, the latter of which will be replaced by a sharply styled successor in early 2021.

The GX is certainly more handsome than the little potato that is the Encore, with standard 18-inch wheels and LED headlights. The version you see here wears Sport Touring duds — a $1,100 package that adds body-colored side moldings, unique bumpers and a whole bunch of red accents in the grille. I could absolutely do without the red stuff, but the rest of the Sport Touring getup is actually rather nice. Still, you’re likely better off skipping this package and saving some money; I think the Encore GX is just as attractive with its standard gray exterior trim.

Stepping inside reveals a handsome, nicely organized cabin, although the closer you look, the more flaws you find. Don’t forget the $25,095 Encore GX (including $995 for destination) is based on the $19,995 Trailblazer, and it doesn’t take long to find evidence of those budget roots. If something looks like cheap plastic, it is cheap plastic. And even the more upscale-looking materials on the dashboard feel weirdly rubbery. Specific items like the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks are the same low-rent parts General Motors has been using for years, and the rest of the controls are all just kind of meh. Buick maintains it’s a premium brand, and its larger vehicles are actually quite nice inside — even the smaller Encore can be decidedly more plush — but the GX’s interior is no better (or in some cases, worse) than what you’ll find in non-luxury competitors like the Hyundai Kona or Kia Seltos.

Happily, the GX redeems itself in terms of overall passenger volume. Since it’s bigger than the standard Encore, there’s plenty of room for adults in both front and back, and the upright shape means headroom is hardly an issue. The leather seats of my Sport Touring tester are comfortable, though they’re rather narrow and lack any real side bolstering. With the driver’s seat set for my ideal driving position, I have lots of space to sit behind myself (although at 5 feet, 8 inches, I’m not exactly what you’d call tall).

The interior is nicely laid out, but the materials are just so-so.

Unfortunately, cargo volume suffers, with the Encore GX offering just 23.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats upright, or 50.2 with them folded flat. Those numbers just slightly best the smaller Encore but lag behind other subcompact CUVs, including the aforementioned Seltos or even the tiny Nissan Kicks. A hands-free power liftgate is optional, and it can be set to open to different heights.

The best thing about the Encore GX’s interior is the multimedia tech. Every GX comes standard with Buick’s incredibly easy-to-use infotainment system, housed on an 8-inch touchscreen. This is essentially a rebranded version of the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 suite found in Buick’s corporate cousin, and that’s a good thing. All of the icons are easy to read, the system responds instantly to inputs and the menus are a cinch to navigate. If you prefer to rely on your own tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and Amazon Alexa integration is available. Embedded navigation is optional on all Encore GX models, but you could also just skip it and let Google Maps or Waze do the heavy lifting.

Standard driver-assistance systems include forward-collision warning with pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning. It’s an impressive roster of tech for this price. Curiously, though, adaptive cruise control remains optional, even on the most expensive Essence model, where it’s bundled into the $1,790 Advanced Technology Package that also includes a surround-view camera, head-up display and navigation. The HD camera is the only part of that package worth paying for; the head-up display is one of those dashboard-mounted ones where a small screen flips up, and you can hear how cheap this thing is by the groan of its motor and the click as it snaps into place. It’s a shame Buick doesn’t allow a desirable option like adaptive cruise control to be purchased on its own. (Or, you know, just make it standard, like so many other non-premium competitors are doing these days.)

The Encore GX is available with either a 1.2-liter or 1.3-liter I3 engine, both of which are turbocharged. Front-wheel drive is standard, and if you want all-wheel drive, you’re forced into getting the larger inline-three. I can’t speak to the smaller 1.2-liter I3 and its 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, as my South Korea-built Sport Touring tester has the larger 1.3, which brings 155 hp and 174 lb-ft to the party. Regardless of engine, front-wheel-drive models use a continuously variable transmission, but the 1.3/AWD pairing gets a nine-speed automatic.

The nine-speed transmission operates smoothly and seamlessly, and with the engine’s full torque punch coming on strong at just 1,600 rpm, there’s plenty of low-end power for scooting around town. But this engine isn’t perfect. Little triples like this are often rough by nature, and Buick’s 1.3-liter is no exception. It kind of chugs like a diesel under hard acceleration, and the engine vibration at idle is strong enough that you can feel it through the seat and the steering wheel.

The GX’s most efficient powertrain combination is the 1.3-liter engine with front-wheel drive, which the EPA says should return 30 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Adding all-wheel drive reduces those numbers to 26 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, and if you go for the smaller 1.2T, you’re looking at 26 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Across the board, these aren’t exactly stellar figures, especially when a larger, more powerful Honda CR-V will return 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Still, they’re relatively easy to achieve; I had no problem seeing about 30 mpg highway in my AWD tester (though I only ever drove it in FWD mode).

Like many other small SUVs, the Encore GX’s all-wheel-drive system isn’t an always-on affair. In fact, the GX defaults to front-drive unless you press the “AWD” button on the center console, just ahead of the shifter, at which point torque is sent to the rear axle. I really like that the Encore remembers your setting when you shut the engine off — if you had AWD selected, it’ll be turned on when you start the vehicle again. The handling characteristics don’t really change between FWD and AWD, either, at least on dry pavement.

On the road, the GX is mostly fine. The steering is incredibly light and equally devoid of feedback, but the chassis is nicely sorted. The Encore has no trouble soaking up the bumps on Los Angeles’ crummy roads and smooths out the often jarring expansion joints on the 405 freeway. Body roll is about average, and the brakes are strong but easy to modulate. The GX will largely spend its life running errands and commuting in traffic, and for that, it’s perfectly suited.

Yet the more time I spend behind the wheel of the Encore GX, the more I struggle to find its appeal. My Essence 1.3T AWD Sport Touring tester retails for $36,320 including destination, and adding the rest of the available options brings it up over $38,000. Sure, that’s several thousand dollars less expensive than a similarly equipped Audi Q3, but the Audi’s a real luxury vehicle with a significantly better interior, nicer on-road manners and a larger suite of tech. For my money, I’d just pick up a fully loaded Honda CR-V Touring which, again, is larger, more powerful, more fuel-efficient, nicer inside and offers more driver-assistance tech, all for a lower price ($35,870). Or I’d just get a Chevy Trailblazer, because it’s essentially the same car for less money.

The GX is fine in a vacuum, but non-luxury competitors — and the cheaper non-GX Encore — are better buys.

The GX might be positioned between Buick’s Encore and Envision, but it doesn’t seem like it was originally designed to fill that role. The less expensive Encore has a more refined powertrain and nicer interior materials. The GX, meanwhile, just feels like the higher-cost Trailblazer it is.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the GX, but aside from being a little bigger and slightly better looking than the standard Encore, it doesn’t really seem to improve upon that package. Still, Buick needs as many new utility vehicles as possible in order to keep momentum. And until fresher offerings arrive, the Encore GX is at least another option.

The Q3 replaces a model that has been on sale in the U.S. since the 2015 model year but is much older, which means that the new Q3 will benefit from almost a decade's worth of technology, design and engineering evolution in a segment that has become much more important to Audi and other luxury automakers over the last few years. When it comes to design, the 2019 Q3 is still easily recognizable as a smaller sibling of the Q5 and Q7, featuring a new pentagonal grille with chrome borders and bookended by two prominent vertical chrome inlets. A sculpted shoulder line leads from the front fender all the way to the rear fascia, which keeps the hatchback profile of the first-gen model amid newly sculpted taillights, a rakish D-pillar and more prominent exhaust tips. Overall, the new Q3 keeps the profile of the first-gen model, even though it has grown in just about every dimension. The wheelbase has been stretched by 3 inches, while overall length has grown by 3.8 inches. Inside, the familiar instrument cluster is gone, replaced by a version of the Audi Virtual Cockpit that is 10.25 inches in size. The digital cluster display is separate from the infotainment screen, which sits a little lower on the dash, below the AC vents, but there are still plenty of buttons and knobs for the temperature controls just above the gear shifter. The interior itself has been completely redesigned and now features plenty of sharp, horizontal lines and hexagonal shapes. "The Audi connect portfolio ideally supplements navigation guidance with traffic information online, the point-of-interest search and information on parking spaces and filling stations appearing directly in the navigation map," Audi says. "The Audi Q3 utilizes the Audi fleet’s swarm intelligence to forecast the availability of roadside parking space, to provide information on hazardous spots and current speed limits." SEAT will launch one new car every six months until 2020. The first two vehicles will be the SEAT Tarraco and the CUPRA Ateca, which are going on sale at the end of 2018. The following year – 2020 – will see SEAT’s first fully electric vehicle, built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and featuring a range of 500 kilometres and, for the first time, the addition of a CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) in the SEAT model line-up. This was announced today by SEAT President Luca de Meo at the annual results presentation to the media held in Madrid. SEAT is taking a step forward in boosting electric mobility, which includes the hybrid version of the new generation Leon, also in 2020. In addition, the brand will remain committed to vehicles powered with compressed natural gas (CNG) as well as internal combustion engines. The President of SEAT pointed out that “we can be happy with the 2017 results, but we shouldn’t be satisfied. Together we’ve closed a period of consolidation and now it’s time to look to the future with the ambition to grow.” 2017, a year of records SEAT successfully concluded 2017. After achieving its best results in history in 2016, its profit after tax in 2017 grew to 281* million euros, which is 21.3% more than the previous year (2016: 232 million), excluding the extraordinary effect of the sale of the VW Finance, S.A. subsidiary to Volkswagen AG. SEAT’s turnover reached a record figure of 9.552 billion euros in 2017, which is 11.1% more than the year prior (2016: 8.597). This was driven by the company’s sales momentum, posting the highest volume since 2001 with 468,400 vehicle deliveries making SEAT one of the fastest growing brands in Europe, and an improved vehicle mix led by the Ateca, a model with a better contribution margin. Since 2013, SEAT’s turnover has gone up close to 50%. According to Luca de Meo, “2017 was a new year of records for SEAT”. From a sales standpoint, “the 2017 results are the outcome of a balanced development of all our models. Today we have one of the youngest ranges on the market, a little more than three years on average, which covers all the relevant segments in Europe with class leading products.” De Meo added that “in just a few years we have turned SEAT into a relevant brand for a vast majority of European customers.” The new model offensive comes as a result of the highest investment figure since the Martorell factory was built in 1992. Last year, SEAT allocated 962 million euros to investments and R&D expenses, which is 11.6% more than in 2016 (862), and 10.1% of the brand’s total turnover. Of this amount, 464 million euros were earmarked entirely for R&D, a figure which represents close to 3% of the total R&D investment expenses in Spain, making SEAT the leading industrial investor in Spain. From 2013 to 2017, SEAT invested more than 3.3 billion euros in its future, mainly allocated to its biggest ever product offensive, as well as to developing new services to achieve the goal of placing the company at the forefront of digitisation, connectivity and smart mobility. SEAT Vice-President for Finance, IT and Organisation Holger Kintscher emphasised that “in 2017 we improved all our main financial indicators. SEAT continues to invest in its future and this is generating excellent results. We completed the largest investment in 25 years, and thanks to this effort in renewing and extending our product range, we have established all-time records for net sales, profit after tax before extraordinary effects and operating cash flow.” Kintscher added that “SEAT’s strategy is working and we have reached our goal of profitability. We are a sustainable company and are ready to face future challenges and finance our growth plans.” In 2017, SEAT also increased the ability to finance its activity by relying on its own resources. In this sense, cash flow rose by 24.4% to reach the record figure of 947 million euros (2016: 761), which is almost three times more than in 2013 and demonstrates the company’s financial sustainability. SEAT has the necessary resources to deal with the technological transformation of the automotive sector and guarantee financial stability. Moreover, in 2017 SEAT exported 81.1% of its business volume and established itself as Spain’s main industrial exporter, accounting for close to 3% of the total figure for the country. SEAT’s goal for upcoming years is to step up the internationalisation of the brand and keep growing beyond Europe. From an industrial standpoint, SEAT debuted the new MQB A0 platform in Martorell in 2017 with the launch of the Ibiza and the Arona. Both models, together with the Leon and the Audi Q3, which will be replaced by the Audi A1 in the second half of 2018, have taken Martorell to 95% of the factory’s current capacity. In addition, the MQB A0 platform contributes to stability, as it guarantees a high-volume production output over the next 10 years. The increase in production and the scope of the company’s future plans translated into more employment. The SEAT Group workforce grew by a total of 185 employees in 2017, and so far this year 265 more have been added. More brands, more markets, more cars and more energies During his presentation on the company’s future plans, Luca de Meo indicated that SEAT’s growth will be based on four pillars: “more brands, more markets, more cars and more energies.” In this sense, in the first quarter of the year SEAT has launched CUPRA, which has always been the ultimate expression of sportiness, and from now on is set to become “a brand that generates more income, attracts new customers, remains committed to motorsport, seamlessly integrates technologies such as electrification, hybridisation, connectivity and driver assistants and enhances the image, credibility and reputation of the entire SEAT organisation”, explained Luca de Meo. SEAT also recently created XMOBA, a new company whose main goal is to identify, test, sell and invest in projects that improve future mobility. XMOBA and CUPRA join SEAT Metropolis:Lab Barcelona, SEAT’s wholly owned digital-lab inaugurated in 2017, which is a part of the Volkswagen Group’s worldwide network of IT-Labs. The three new companies, together with SEAT, are beginning to shape “a holding with core activities and small companies under the same umbrella. Our intention is to combine the best of a solid corporate structure with the agility, flexibility and speed of start-ups.” Furthermore, Luca de Meo reaffirmed SEAT’s commitment to opening outward and building a digital ecosystem around the car. Within this framework are the partnerships and agreements reached with companies such as Amazon Alexa, Shazam, Waze, Telefónica or Saba. “We want to be an important actor in the connected car revolution. Our ambition is to become a front-runner.” Luca de Meo also pointed to SEAT’s globalisation as a further pillar of the strategy. The company operates in more than 80 countries, but only 15% of sales are made outside Europe. In this sense, the strategic growth regions are Northern Africa, where SEAT leads the Volkswagen Group’s vehicle assembly project in Algeria, and Latin America and Mexico, where the company is studying the feasibility of producing.
