Special mention to ART.IS.FICTION (@artisfiction) and Memories (@memoriesuk). I only caught bits of both their sets but - Memories in particular - they were fantastic. It’s always nice to go to a show and think, “I would actually listen to this at home”.
It must be nearly a year since Sick Circus decided to call it a day. They were Liverpool’s main glam/80s/classic rock band and had gained a decent following in the city. But - by their own admission - some saw them as a bit of a joke, which for a bunch of talented musicians must have been very frustrating. This, compounded with the fact they felt like they were growing away from the 80s sound that they use to love and moving more towards heavier music meant that a change had to come if they wanted to carry on. They decided to part ways from the name, bring in some new band members and thus Reperium was born.
The highly anticipated debut took place in a tiny room, which provided the perfect atmosphere for the show. To introduce their set was a metal remix of the YouTube viral video “This is MTV, and we’re from Kenny”, which I think amused the band more so than the actual audience, but it was still a nice start. Personally I would have liked the guy to have kicked off straight into a song once the intro had ended instead of talking to the audience as it felt very “stop and start”. In fact, the flow – in between songs - was a bit of a problem throughout the whole of their short set, with it never really seeming to get started properly until a little while in, though some of this was down to a few technical difficulties. Unfortunately by the time it did start coming together we were then told that they “only have time for one more song”, which definitely gave a feeling of it ending before it got going.

It’s hard to argue against the fact that these guys are a bunch of musically gifted individuals and that together they play very well. The two vocalists worked great - especially considering that for one of them it was their first ever gig. They interchanged with each other perfectly throughout switching between ‘clean’ and ‘screamo’ vocals; you certainly wouldn't have assumed it was the first time that they had played in front of an audience together. The rest of the band were tight and as musically superb as you would expect from them. However songs wise was sadly a bit hit and miss, there were some great moments of melodic Dream Theatre-esque type sequences but also a few too many times were you just lose attention and zone out of what is happening on stage, possibly over complicating some of the songs too much. The main issue being that none of choruses were particularly strong or memorable – which for my personal taste is always the most important thing.
There’s a lot competition with metal bands in Liverpool and there are some very, very good ones. Reperium have the talent to be one of the best, however at the moment they are definitely lacking in some really good songs. They were not bad by any means but they were definitely missing that extra ingredient to make you want to go home and download their EP. I am sure that with more shows and more song-writing time these guys in 6 months will have a killer set with better songs, greater stage presence and a more confident attitude in-between tracks.All-in-all although their debut gig was not a blow-away success they are without a doubt a band to keep an eye on within the Liverpool music scene.
  6.5/10
