Call it "Apple exceptionalism" – the idea that Apple, alone among the Big Tech firms, is virtuous, and therefore its conduct should be interpreted through that lens of virtue. The wellspring of this virtue is conveniently nebulous, which allows for endless goal-post shifting by members of the Cult of Mac when Apple's sins are made manifest.
Take the claim that Apple is "privacy respecting," which is attributed to Apple's business model of financing its services though cash transactions, rather than by selling it customers to advertisers. This is the (widely misunderstood) crux of the "surveillance capitalism" hypothesis: that capitalism is just fine, but once surveillance is in the mix, capitalism fails.

While the company has been unwilling to spy on its users on behalf of the US government, it's proven more than willing to compromise its worldwide users' privacy to pad its own profits. At the very same time, Apple was spinning up its own commercial surveillance program, spying on Ios customers, gathering the very same data as Facebook, and for the very same purpose: to target ads. When it came to its own surveillance, Apple completely ignored its customers' explicit refusal to consent to spying, spied on them anyway, and lied about it:

Here's the thing: even if you believe that Apple has a "corporate personality" that makes it want to do the right thing, that desire to be virtuous is dependent on the constraints Apple faces. The fact that Apple has complete legal and technical control over the hardware it sells – the power to decide who can make software that runs on that hardware, the power to decide who can fix that hardware, the power to decide who can sell parts for that hardware – represents an irresistible temptation to enshittify Apple products.
"Constraints" are the crux of the enshittification hypothesis. The contagion that spread enshittification to every corner of our technological world isn't a newfound sadism or indifference among tech bosses. Those bosses are the same people they've always been – the difference is that today, they are unconstrained.
Having bought, merged or formed a cartel with all their rivals, they don't fear competition (Apple buys 90+ companies per year, and Google pays it an annual $26.3b bribe for default search on its operating systems and programs).
Having captured their regulators, they don't fear fines or other penalties for cheating their customers, workers or suppliers (Apple led the coalition that defeated dozens of Right to Repair bills, year after year, in the late 2010s).
Having wrapped themselves in IP law, they don't fear rivals who make alternative clients, mods, privacy tools or other "adversarial interoperability" tools that disenshittify their products (Apple uses the DMCA, trademark, and other exotic rules to block third-party software, repair, and clients).
True virtue rests not merely in resisting temptation to be wicked, but in recognizing your own weakness and avoiding temptation. As I wrote when Apple embarked on its "curated computing" path, the company would eventually – inevitably – use its power to veto its customers' choices to harm those customers:

Every Iphone browser is just a reskinned version of Apple's Safari, running on the same antiquated, insecure Webkit browser engine. Last month, the EU took aim at Apple's veto over its users' and software vendors' ability to transact with one another. Apple claims that its monopoly is beneficent, used to protect its users, making its products more "elegant" and safe. But when Apple's interests conflict with its customers' safety and privacy – and pocketbooks – Apple always puts itself first, just like every other corporation. In other words: Apple is unexceptional.
The Cult of Mac denies this. They say that no one wants to use a third-party app store, no one wants third-party payments, no one wants third-party repair. This is obviously wrong and trivially disproved: if no Apple customer wanted these things, Apple wouldn't have to go to enormous lengths to prevent them. The only phones that an independent Iphone repair shop fixes are Iphones: which means Iphone owners want independent repair.
The rejoinder from the Cult of Mac is that those Iphone owners shouldn't own Iphones: if they wanted to exercise property rights over their phones, they shouldn't have bought a phone from Apple. This is the "No True Scotsman" fallacy for distraction-rectangles, and moreover, it's impossible to square with Tim Cook's insistence that if you want private communications, you must buy an Iphone.
Apple is unexceptional. It's just another Big Tech monopolist. Rounded corners don't preserve virtue any better than square ones. Any company that is freed from constraints – of competition, regulation and interoperability – will always enshittify. Apple – being unexceptional – is no exception.

World Building June Day 15 - Novum’s Technological Advancements
I’ve been looking forward to this day, as I’m going to cover a lot of the advanced technologies present in Novum. Novum being a Cyberpunk style setting is naturally going to have a lot of futuristic technologies, naturally used for all kinds of things all over a moral scale. But I’ll be covering 3 big things I want for the setting.

AI
Autodynes (Flying Cars)
Starting off the most prevalent technology is the cyber modification, or cybermod for short. Cybermods are what you expect, cybernetic technology used to modify a human being, originally made as a form of medical therapy tool, early forms of cyber mods were prosthesis that had been hooked to nerve endings and muscle groups, they were functional but weren’t quite to the level of full on replacement just yet.
As technology progressed, and the early conflicts of the Withering Years started, cybermod advancement became a big focus as more and more troops were returning with grievous wounds or missing limbs. As they advanced so did their functionality and use, even developing new avenues.
Nowadays cybermods cover a wide variety of modifications and augmentations, granting superhuman abilities, though offset by maintenance needs and financial cost ultimately. Most people you see on the street who have cyber modifications, have 1 or 2 at best, 3 if they’re wealthy enough.
The biggest suppliers are Atlas Innovations from Greece, Tarracota Tech from China, and Rossum Universal in Germany. Smaller companies such as Sigma Dynamics in Boston (no relation to Boston Dynamics) have begun work following the standards and providing high quality more affordable models.
The development of Athena Genetics Programmable Biomatter (Genepaste as it is colloquially known) was also a great boon to cybermods as it allowed for the creation of contact points to circumvent rejection syndrome, the genepaste would grow flesh around the connection housing and connect nerve endings in a way that the body recognized the mods as part of the body.
Said Genepaste has also been used to develop biological augmentations known by the public as Genemods, these are more expensive modifications that require no active maintenance and use the body’s own healing as a way to repair themselves. While they’re useful they can’t really go any further past peak human as compared to cyber modifications. Good luck seeing anyone with one of these on the streets.
Cyber-modification has advanced far enough that the human brain can in fact be housed in an advanced life support system called a braincase, and be installed into fully mechanical bodies, as while the cybermods do confer increased strength, they are still limited by the organic body they are attached to. Fullborgs are not an unusual sight but they are uncommon, as a fullborg may be capable of greater physical strength and armor, it still requires proper life support and sensor nets to replicate human feeling. With factors such as those they are far far more expensive than most base mods.
Next up is Artificial Intelligence. AI is a big part in setting and is found in so many day to day tasks, there is even a Tiering system for AI and how it works.
Tier-1 - Autonomous systems that follow programmed paths and respond in a variety of preset ways to stimuli, commonly seen in security machines and basic soldier units. Enough clever programming that they can adapt to external factors but still ultimately require a response from a dedicated command.
Tier-2 - Smart systems found in synthetics and company androids, made for more social work, these units are equipped with advanced machine learning and can operate for long periods of time independently. They’re not exactly super complicated by today’s standards but numerous enough that they fill the jobs they need.
Tier-3 - Intelligent Systems used by various corps and independent agencies for organization of information and streamlining of bureaucracy. These AIs take the complexity from organizing humans and attempt to make order out of chaos to preset parameters, incredibly independent with enough complexity to even form opinions and biases, but useful nonetheless.
Tier-4 - Known as Governmental Systems, these are incredibly complex computer systems that function on independence not afforded to Tier-3s, managing millions if not a billion people every day. Their role is to smooth out government and national bureaucracies and provide counsel and suggestions to the leaders they advise, no ultimate decisions made and the Tier-4s seem ultimately “happy” with that.
The programmers of these systems take pride in their “ethical guidelines” they have set out that have made these things ultimately safe for day to day use. In a big surprise to everyone the recovery from the Withering Years has been made easier by the AIs in use, and no sacrifices of lives for the “Greater good” has come about.
Finally we come to the Autodyne, the Autodyne is a specialized brand of VTOL made by Swiss Manufacturer Archimedes International. The Autodyne is an automobile shaped VTOL that has become popular among the rich and powerful, as well as numerous police forces for its distinct shape mimicking common cars and vans.
The Autodyne can reach common speeds on the road no issue and then be swapped to a flight mode with ease, though flying it is a different beast entirely. You have to announce a flight plan, follow preset paths presented to the flight computer through AR, and even have actual pilot training just to use it, and not crash instantly.
For most of the common people looking to own a model, their best bet is to get their hands on a decommissioned police interceptor through auction, though these have all flight systems and controls stripped out and are little more than fancy looking street cars at this point. Most are hoping that the most recent model, the Peregrine, suffers a few accidents to decommission a few and give people a chance at getting their hands on one.

For example, one survey found that as many as 43 percent of IT service desks use email to track user requests. Productivity stalls when employees have to manually classify these requests.
Without a structured ticket receipt process and request tracking tools, IT service desks will miss opportunities to capture data that can help identify common problems and ultimately reduce time to resolve them in the future.
3. Recurring problems
Directly related to our previous challenges are vexing unresolved but recurring problems. Without good record keeping and data analysis tools, the service desk cannot easily identify systemic problems. Time and company resources are wasted investigating and solving the same problems over and over again.
If a team is unable to capture valuable data, it will be difficult to plan adequately to address these issues and reduce the number of tickets submitted to deal with the root causes of common problems reported by users.
4. Tracking problems of user devices
Oftentimes, problems are related to user devices, and solutions need to be created by tracking installation information and gaining knowledge about those devices. Although tedious, service teams can learn how to solve specific problems.
Example 1: IT equipment is installed on the 35th floor of Bank of China Tower, Central, Hong Kong. In the case of IT equipment downtime, the service agreement requires that it should be repaired within four hours. Without tracking the IT equipment configuration, engineers cannot bring the appropriate spare parts to the site for emergency repairs. When the engineer arrived at the Bank of China Tower in Central, Hong Kong, he might also find that the IT equipment had been moved to the 10th floor of the Bank of China, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
Example 2: When a user with the same IT equipment asks for help, the IT department is able to resolve the problem by analyzing the service history without having to repeat the entire troubleshooting process every time, which greatly increases productivity. But one survey found that 33 percent of IT service desks don’t track devices at all. If tracked, relevant information is often recorded on spreadsheets and outdated tools. If not properly managed, these tools can produce unreliable information.
5. Repeated time-consuming tasks
The service desk usually deals with various common issues regularly. This means a lot of time is wasted doing the same process over and over again. Password resets are the biggest culprit, accounting for a startling 20 to 50 percent of help desk calls.
Often, issues handled by the help desk can be resolved by end users, provided they have access to the correct information or through an automated process. Not having these really inhibits the potential of the sector and incurs a lot of unnecessary costs.
