An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Expand Social Security by Taxing the Rich!
1,122 so far! Help us get to 2,000 signers!
If nothing is done to strengthen Social Security’s finances, starting in 2034, Social Security will only be able to pay roughly 80% of benefits owed. Thankfully, there’s a fiscally responsible easy solution to this future shortfall that doesn’t impoverish seniors or their families: Make the wealthy pay their fair share! Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced the Social Security Expansion Act of 2023, which would increase benefits by $2,400, extend the lifespan of the Trust Fund by 75 years and do much more to solidify this bedrock of working-class prosperity. And, it’s completely paid for by scrapping the payroll tax cap on incomes over $250,000―meaning that millionaires and billionaires would finally start paying more of their fair share. In the House, Rep. John Larson has previously introduced the Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust, which would affect just the top 0.4% of wage earners. It would fulfill the promise of our Social Security system by improving benefits for millions of seniors living in poverty and extending the lifespan of the Trust Fund―once again, paid for by making the wealthy pay more of their fair share. Instead of Republican proposals to raise the retirement age or directly cut benefits, Congress needs to scrap the Social Security payroll tax cap on the wealthy. That means that while working people won’t pay a dime more in Social Security contributions, millionaires and billionaires will finally be paying their fair share all year long. Good!

malevolent and the queer-coded villain trope
*disclaimer please respect the #masked tag. while i'm putting these thoughts out into the ether they're not really meant for harlan to see as i don't want to be put on blast for criticising the show. this is not me attempting to malign this podcast or its creator or to go "it's bad and problematic actually so don't listen to it" because that's a frankly horrible and unhelpful way of engaging with media and the world at large. i'm certainly not going to stop enjoying malevolent wholeheartedly or supporting harlan in his creative endeavours. this is not an accusation, it's an observation.
i've been thinking about the queer-coded villain trope in a separate context recently, but something clicked for me with part 34. horror (and other genre fiction but let's focus on the relevant genre here) has a tradition of placing queer elements within the subtext. it's a means of Othering and used to separate the protagonist from whatever evil entity they're up against in the story, be it man or creature, and where the the tropes of the monstrous queer and the queer-coded villain are born from.
a brief second disclaimer. i'm a queer villain and queer horror enjoyer and here to reclaim every single queer-coded villain and monster ever created but acting like the trope doesn't have a problematic, negative history is a sucky way of engaging with and examining a piece of media so let's not do that.
aaanyway, to the actual meat of this post: i believe malevolent reiterates the monstrous queer / queer-coded villain tropes however unintentionally and they go unexamined in the text.
first, we have kayne. flamboyant, exaggerated kayne who calls arthur—and to an extent john—pet names. i don't really think i have to go into detail for people to know what i'm getting at.
then we have larson. yeah, larson. in particular, i'm referring to the scene where arthur wakes up in the larson estate and his clothes have been removed. larson approaches arthur while he's in bed, vulnerable, and while there's not anything untoward happening in the text, it's still very ... master of the house and the gothic heroine, for lack of a better comparison. actually, think of count dracula and jonathan harker in castle dracula — the dynamic is very reminiscent of that, and dracula is a famously queer coded monster in part for that whole thing.
and finally, there's the butcher. a predator—a serial killer—obsessed with chasing arthur down. and boy did part 34 lay it down thick. i mean, he hears peggy gordon in his head when he hunts arthur and sings it to him when he's come to get him. it's a song about a man's unrequited love and it's pretty obvious the butcher's meant to be the man while arthur is peggy, who slighted him when he escaped from the butcher back in the train. and then as if that wasn't obvious enough he has a line about falling in love with his victims. "it's dedication, devotion, a bond. (laugh) sounds a bit like falling in love, doesn't it? maybe i suppose you could say i've fallen in love with each and every one of them. with each and every animal." which is then followed by more arthur-specific obsessing.
harlan has explicitly stated that arthur isn't queer rep, so unintentionally what's happening in the text is that the heterosexual protagonist is pitted against these queer-coded malevolent entities in a way that's pretty text book.
none of these characters i used as examples are written to be explicitly queer, but the coding is certainly there. again, i'm not saying harlan is a secret queerphobe who is putting this subtext in malevolent intentionally—i can with confidence say that we can safely assume that isn't the case! but, like i said when i was prefacing this post, queer subtext in the monstrous and villainous have a recorded history within horror. it's really easy to reiterate tropes like that if you create within a genre without actively examining your work and its wider context, and i think that's what happening here.
so what was the point of this post? there isn't much of one, really, i just made an observation and wanted to share because i believe in and enjoy examining the things you love critically. and i do love malevolent, with its queer-coded villains and all. i'm not calling for anything to change in the story, or accusing harlan or anyone else of anything; i'm just having thoughts about the wider scope of horror media and where malevolent fits within it and i'm using a cda and queer theory oriented brain to do it.
#masked#malevolent#malevolent podcast#tl;dr mlvlnts villains have queer coded vibes this is a neutral statement#i havent read this post since i wrote it a couple of weeks ago idk how well though out it is#malevolent spoilers#ggjfigj oops sorry about that forgot to tag the spoilers

Connecticut Democratic lawmakers report bomb threats on Thanksgiving
Several Democratic lawmakers from Connecticut on Thursday reported bomb threats, one day after members of key senior staff picks of President-elect Donald Trump’s reported they were targeted by threats and “swatting.” Sen. Chris Murphy, Reps. Jahana Hayes, John Larson and Rep. Jim Himes — all Democrats — issued statements on Thursday that their homes were subject to bomb threats. Murphy’s office…

Rising Political Tensions: Connecticut Lawmakers Targeted in Bomb Threat Scare
Rising Political Tensions: Connecticut Lawmakers Targeted in Bomb Threat Scare The political landscape in the U.S. took a chilling turn this Thanksgiving as multiple Democratic lawmakers from Connecticut faced bomb threats at their homes. Representatives Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, and John Larson were among the targets, raising alarms across the political community. Thankfully, law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police and local authorities, responded swiftly and found no explosives. Context of the Threats These incidents occurred just a day after several prominent figures connected to President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet reported similar threats and "swatting attacks," which involve false reports intended to provoke a police response. Notable individuals such as Elise Stefanik, Matt Gaetz, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and Lee Zeldin were also threatened, underscoring the volatile political climate in the aftermath of the elections. Rep. Himes expressed gratitude towards law enforcement while vehemently condemning political violence. "There is no place for political violence in this country," he stated, echoing a sentiment shared by many who long for peace during the holiday season. A Troubling Backdrop The backdrop of these threats is an election season marred by violence, including a recent incident where a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally, injuring the former president and killing a supporter. Such events highlight the dangerous divide in U.S. politics and underscore the urgent need for tightened security and constructive dialogue across party lines. Implications for American Democracy These threats bring to light a pressing issue confronting American democracy: the challenge of maintaining civil discourse in an increasingly polarized society. The incidents prompt discussions about the responsibilities of media and political figures in promoting peace and unity. As the nation grapples with these challenges, it is crucial for citizens and leaders alike to stand against violence and foster a culture of tolerance and understanding. M Read the full article

How Democrats could win more elections
My fellow Americans…if I may call you that? I’ve only been a US citizen for five weeks, but I think I may have identified a key weakness in the Democrats’ electioneering strategy, and I wanted to bring it to your attention because it would be great if the forced birth/martial law/mass incarceration party didn’t win the next election.
If Democrats want to win more elections, they should try:
Enacting popular policies, preferably ones that materially improve the lives of potential voters;
Making sure those policies take effect before the next election; and
Telling people about them.
As a bonus, they could also publicize when Republicans want to enact policies that:
Aren’t popular; and
Materially worsen the lives of potential voters.
I know, I know. Don’t teach granny to suck eggs! High-paid Democratic Party consultants have forgotten more about this stuff that I’ll ever learn, etc etc. But you guys, I think I could really be onto something.
Take Social Security. Created in 1935 by FDR, Social Security is one of the most popular government programs in US history — and it’s especially popular among old people for some reason, and you know, old people vote a lot!
[Image ID: A Data for Progress polling data chart entitled ‘Voters Are Very Concerned About the US Government Cutting Social Security Benefits.]
80% of US voters want Social Security expanded. Not 80% of Democrats — 80% of voters, from a June 2022 survey from Data For Progress:
https://www.filesforprogress.org/datasets/2022/6/dfp_ss_june_tabs.pdf
And yet, a July poll found that 70% of voters hadn’t heard that the GOP wants to “sunset” Social Security — that is, get rid of it, over the next five years. 71% of Republicans didn’t know this — and neither did 76% of independents (who might, you know, vote Democrat if they found out), nor did 64% of Democrats.
https://www.filesforprogress.org/datasets/2022/7/dfp_july_ss_tabs.pdf
This is just me spitballing here, but what if someone like Nancy Pelosi or Joe Biden or Chuck Schumer were to call a press conference and announce that this was the Republicans’ plan? I mean, it’s a long shot, but maybe if they were to tell voters what specific, material, important changes the next election could bring about, voters would find that interesting or even motivating.
I know, I know, I’m not an expert here. But when 81% of all likely voters support indexing Social Security to the cost of living, Democrats could actually do that, and also point out that Republicans won’t?
[Image ID: A Data For Progress chart entitled ‘Voters Strongly Support Imposing Payroll Taxes on the Wealthy to Expand Social Security Benefits.’]
And while pay-fors are bullshit (the US Treasury is a currency issuer, not a currency user, and it is not monetarily constrained), if the Dems wanted to do pay-fors to fund Social Security expansion, they could tax the rich. 76% of Americans want higher taxes on people earning $400k or more/year, including 76% of independents and 65% of Republicans.
As Jessica Corbett writes for Common Dreams, the Congressional Progressive Caucus is onto this, and is spreading the word, primarily via CPC chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal, but the Democratic party leadership is effectively silent on subject:
https://www.commondreams.org/news/2022/08/15/80-us-voters-across-party-lines-support-expanding-social-security
This despite the fact that there is already proposed legislation to enact this extremely popular policy that would hearten Democrats, please independents, and demonstrate to the majority of Republican voters which party has their interests at heart.
Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust is a bill introduced by Rep John Larson, intended to end the 50 year neglect of Social Security:
https://larson.house.gov/issues/social-security-2100-sacred-trust
And then there’s the Social Security Expansion Act, introduced by Bernie Sanders and Rep Peter DeFazio, which increases contributions by the wealthy and expands benefits to match increases in the cost of living:
https://www.commondreams.org/news/2022/06/09/time-scrap-cap-sanders-warren-bill-targets-rich-expand-social-security
But the Dem leadership isn’t pushing for these bills and they’re keeping the GOP’s intention to zero out Social Security very quiet. It’s hard to say why, but maybe it has to do with the corporate wing of the party’s hatred of Social Security, which has found its expression in Biden’s nomination of the anti-Social Security ideologue Andrew Biggs the Social Security Advisory Board:
https://www.levernews.com/biden-taps-anti-social-security-ideologue-to-oversee-program/
Biggs has spent his career advocating for Social Security cuts and privatization — two ideas that are both cruel and wildly unpopular, especially among old people, who, as noted, vote a lot. Biggs is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, an organization whose illustrious career includes a key role in denying climate change and promoting the interests of tobacco companies:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2019/jan/23/free-market-thinktanks-tobacco-control-polices-database#0/?american-enterprise-institute
Biggs says he no longer favors privatizing Social Security — he’s switched to another boondoggle, creating investment accounts for Social Security savers that would let them give their retirement savings to Wall Street to gamble with.
As Matthew Cunningham-Cook writes for The Lever, Biggs’s career includes work on GW Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security and shift its investments from T-bills to “high-fee, high-risk ‘personal accounts.’”
https://www.levernews.com/biden-taps-anti-social-security-ideologue-to-oversee-program/
This wasn’t a temporary lapse: Biggs has spent his career writing editorials and papers calling for Social Security cuts and privatization, claiming, for example, that Social Security privatization would make seniors “not only richer, but also happier, healthier, more familial, smarter, and more active citizens.”
https://www.cato.org/commentary/investings-rich-fringe-benefits
Biggs’s career is a Zelig-like tour of catastrophic privatizations and cuts — for example, in 2016, he became part of the unaccountable board that seized control over Puerto Rico, sidelining its elected leaders with the mission to make sure that Puerto Rico kept paying out to Wall Street bond-holders, irrespective of the human costs:
https://www.aei.org/profile/andrew-g-biggs/
Not only are Biggs’s ideas terrible — they are also wildly, fantastically unpopular among voters. Voters do not want this. Social Security privatization is the pet project of a minuscule minority of fantastically wealthy dilettantes, and if it come to pass, the party responsible for them will be deservedly punished in elections.
Now, the Democrats are, in fact, capable of creating policy that is both popular among voters and the sort of thing that will make material improvements to their lives. For example, the Inflation Reduction Act contains modest, but meaningful, controls on pharmaceutical prices.
Here too, however, the Democrats have managed to absolutely snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The drug price controls in the IRA don’t take effect until 2026 — that is, long after the next two elections.
Writing in The American Prospect, David Ddayen points out that while negotiating prices takes some time, this is an outrageously, pointlessly, self-defeatingly long timeline. Medicare itself was implemented in a single year:
https://prospect.org/health/prescription-drug-price-reforms-wont-happen-for-years/
And at least some parts of the drug price controls could go into effect tomorrow — but are still not going to be implemented until long after the next two elections. The $2000 cap on seniors’ annual out-of-pocket drug spending doesn’t go into effect until 2025.
Again, I’m just a humble Canadian, newly welcomed into America’s bosom, but it seems to me that if you want to win an election, you should do things to make life better for voters before that election rolls around. Implementing the out-of-pocket cap requires “tallying up patient out-of-pocket costs, which are fully transparent, until they hit $2,000, and then stopping them.”
What’s more, as Dayen points out, delaying the Medicare pharma price negotiations actually makes this bill cost more — every dollar that is negotiated down in pharma pricing is a dollar that can be used to offset the out-of-pocket cap (though again, offsets are bullshit).
The Dems are planning to run on these price caps for the midterms, but, as Dayen says, Dems are going to be claiming to have fixed something that is still broken, as in, “Vote for me — I fixed something for you four years from now!”
Dems gain nothing by this delay. Pharma-backed dark money groups are already blitzing out ads that lie shamelessly about the Medicare improvements in the bill, claiming that Dems have “cut Medicare by $300m” (meaning that Dems have told pharma they’re going to cram $300m in savings down their shareholders’ throats and use that money to help patients):
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/11/rope-a-dope/#cowards-and-lies
I realize that I am not a high-paid Democratic Party consultant here, but I remain convinced that the party could improve its election prospects by doing good things in a timely fashion and then telling voters about them — while also letting voters know about the awful things the Republicans are promising to do.

The audience was treated to a live performance from the spoof "Rogers" musical from HAWKEYE. Very fitting as there was a special look at ECHO, the HAWKEYE spinoff starring Alaqua Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, alongside Devery Jacobs, Graham Greene, Cody Lightning, Tantoo Cardinal, Chaske Spencer and Jacobs' RESERVATION DOGS costar Zahn McClarnon.
D'Onofrio was also on hand with Charlie Cox to discuss the triumphant return of Matt Murdock in the upcoming DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN. Production will begin in 2023.

*Many people think Luna and Garcia Bernal met making Alfonso Cuarón's Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, but they are childhood friends and costars
whose parents worked together in theater. Their parents were rehearsing and doing costume design for a play while Gael was born and were still doing the play when Diego was born.

From Social Security Works
President Harry S Truman famously had a sign on his desk that read “the buck stops here.” If Andrew Saul, the man Donald Trump put in charge of the Social Security Administration (SSA), had a sign on his desk, it would say “it’s never my fault.” Nearly 30 million Social Security beneficiaries are facing weeks-long delays in receiving their COVID relief checks. These are seniors and people with disabilities, many of whom live on fixed incomes and desperately need these checks. Instead of taking responsibility, Saul and his deputy David Black are pointing fingers, making excuses, and flat out lying. Several weeks before the American Rescue Plan became law, the IRS asked SSA for the data needed to send $1,400 survival checks to Social Security beneficiaries. For a full month, Saul and Black failed to send the data.1 As a direct result, seniors and people with disabilities across the country did not receive their relief checks. Finally, Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee took action. Congressmen Richard Neal (D-MA), John Larson (D-CT), Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), and Danny Davis (D-IL) issued an ultimatum. In the words of Rep. Pascrell, “We are giving the Trump-appointed heads of the Social Security Admin 24 Hours to get off their backsides and stop delaying sending stimulus checks to 30,000,000 Americans.”2 The congressional pressure worked. The next day, Saul and Black finally sent the IRS the data to send out the checks. But by dragging their feet for a month, they ensured that the survival checks would arrive weeks late—a catastrophic delay for seniors and people with disabilities who are counting on those checks to pay for food, housing, and medicines. Saul and Black insist that the delay was not their fault, claiming that a bureaucratic error in the stimulus bill prevented them from sharing data. They are lying. Asked about Saul’s claims, a spokesperson for the Ways and Means Committee told Newsweek:3 “Funds could not be directly appropriated because of the reconciliation process, but they were appropriated to Treasury with the intent that they would be distributed to SSA in a timely manner, so this line of defense doesn't hold. It inexplicably took two weeks for the transfer to happen after the American Rescue Plan was signed into law, which is a clear failure of leadership from SSA.”Doubling down on his lies in an extremely defensive statement,4 Saul tried to hide behind the agency’s workforce. “There is no one more committed to serving the public than the employees of this agency,” said Saul. “I find any insinuation to the contrary to be unacceptable.” SSA employees are indeed dedicated to serving the public. That’s why they want President Biden to immediately fire Saul and Black, who are undermining the agency’s mission. Back in December, unions representing the SSA workforce held nearly unanimous no-confidence votes for Saul and Black.5 The people who know Saul and Black’s leadership best want them gone. It’s unclear if Saul and Black delayed the survival checks in a deliberate attempt to sabotage the Biden administration, or if they are just extremely incompetent. But their record shows that they deserve zero benefits of the doubt. For years, Saul and Black have worked to cut Social Security benefits and union-bust the agency’s workforce. They want to make it harder to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, and easier to take them away. According to a whistleblower report, 6 they threatened to fire judges for approving too many disability claims—which is illegal. The drumbeat for President Biden to remove Saul and Black is growing. In January, several unions representing the SSA workforce urged Biden to remove Saul and Black on day one of his administration.7 During his first weeks in office, Biden made some positive personnel changes but failed to remove Saul and Back. In February, in his first act as chair of the Senate Social Security Subcommittee, Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) called Saul and Black “key agents of the Trump agenda to dismantle Social Security” and urged Biden to remove them immediately.8 Weeks ago, Reps. Pascrell, Larson, and Davis—who are all chairs of key House subcommittees—joined the calls for the removal of Saul and Black, stating that they have “pushed substantial cuts to Social Security” and “engaged in aggressive anti-union activities.”9 Their sabotage of the survival checks shows that just because a new president is in the White House doesn’t mean Saul and Black will stop acting as Donald Trump’s agents. Joe Biden ran for president on a promise to protect and expand Social Security. To fulfill it, he needs leadership at the Social Security Administration who will work with him, not against him. 8chan has been taken out
" I examine just how terrorist teams utilize the Internet to hire and also radicalize," Evans informed investigatory press reporter Jace Larson throughout a meeting Monday in Mexico City.
Shooters in 3 various mass murders this year have actually uploaded statement of beliefs on an obscure web site where extremists collect to support on and also hire others.
The 8Chan web site has actually been down and after that back on-line consistently because the mass murders in El Paso Saturday.
An expanding variety of individuals examining mass capturings state homemade extremists are hiring as well as arranging like the method widely known fear teams such as ISIS or Al Qaeda have actually done, as well as they are making use of the 8Chan web site to do it.
Robert Evans does not emit the appearance of somebody that has actually examined extremists academically. The day he fulfilled us, he was clothed like a globe vacationer, putting on a TELEVISION, vest, publications as well as denims.
10 days back, Evans remained in Syria. He took a trip to research extremist teams in Mosel, Iraq in 2016 as well as 2017.
" 8Chan went from a number of disaffected, misogynist videogame followers to straight-out neo-Nazis," Evans stated.
Given that a shooter took place a rampage in March, eliminating 51 individuals in Christchurch, New Zealand, Evans has actually committed a lot of his time to researching just how 3 mass-shootings were linked to the 8Chan web site.
The website began after customers were started from a comparable, yet somewhat extra controlled web site called 4Chan, an image-based online bulletin board system where individuals publish as well as talk about pictures.
8Chan was created as an area where any kind of speech is enabled. Evans demonstrated how customers
" It's this concept that white individuals are going vanished as a result of migration," Evans claimed. He mentioned that he thinks the concept is incorrect.
On the website, viewers additionally speak about something called "substitute concept," which is additionally described as "white substitute concept." Some reveal a problem that the white race might be removed as even more individuals arrive from Mexico, various other main American areas as well as in other places.
The expression "defeating his high rating" is made use of to describe any person that can eliminate greater than a previous awesome.
Eliminating on 8Chan is occasionally compared to a computer game.
As proof of this sensation, Evans mentions that the Christchurch awesome livestreamed his bloodbath with a first-person perspective from a safety helmet web cam.
" There's a factor that the Christchurch shooter livestreamed his bloodbath for individuals at 8Chan, as well as there's a factor that he assembled a songs checklist that teemed with tracks that resembled pertaining to in jokes within that area," Evan claimed.
