Love to Experience Nightlife in Crete? Here Is What You Must Know
While you can enjoy your Santorini tour without a car due to its small size, it is the best idea to rent a car in Crete to explore it well and get the most out of your vacations in Crete. Undoubtedly, Crete is one of the most beautiful Greek islands that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. Its enchanting beauty, pristine beaches, and rich history and culture – there is so much to explore that you will make memories of a lifetime in Crete. While many tourists prefer exploring the island during the day and relaxing at night, a lot of people are night animals who wish to keep their party going on. So, to help you out, we are going to dig a bit deeper into Crete’s nightlife.
Nightlife in Crete: How It Looks Like
Crete does not have the same party atmosphere as the Cyclades; however, there are still some areas that are well-known for their nightclubs and lively ambiance. You can find great clubs and discos in these areas, as well as entertainment for Cretan nights, which often include delicious food and drink, singing, and traditional dancing.
The things you can do at night in Crete vary greatly depending on your age and preferred style of nightlife. If you're into clubbing, then Platanias in Chania or Hersonissos and Malia in Heraklion are the places to go.
Despite being a large island, discos are not very common in Crete, so if that's your preferred style of nightlife, you may want to consider visiting Mykonos, Ios, or other Cycladic islands instead.
Lounge Bars and Pubs for Tourists Looking for Relaxation & Comfort
Nightlife in Crete is typically more laid-back for young adults. Instead of loud and crowded clubs, many people prefer to meet up for drinks in lounge bars where the noise level is conducive to conversation. Check out some of the popular spots along the waterfront of Chania's Old Town and in the center of Heraklion.
If you're in Agios Nikolaos, look for bars close to the port or along the pedestrian road. In Rethymnon, there are also pubs to enjoy in the Old Town.
For many, a night out is centered around a good meal or a traditional Greek night with live Cretan music. These types of options are plentiful throughout Crete, and you can always ask around for recommendations.
Where to Explore the Best Nightlife in Crete
Chania Town is the ideal destination to discover bars and clubs. Some of them are discreetly tucked away in the charming alleys of the old town, while others offer a stunning view of the night sky and sea along the waterfront.
The Old Town of Chania is ideal for night party lovers because it has various boutique hotels and rooms to rent.
If you're looking to soak up some sun by the sea during the day, consider checking out hotels in Agia Marina and Platanias. These areas have many clubs and pubs that are open until late at night (or rather, early in the morning!).
Rethymnon, the third largest city on the island, takes the lead in terms of nightlife. It's home to a major university and has a variety of nightspots scattered throughout the beautiful town. You'll find discos, pubs, beach clubs, and music bars to suit every taste.
If you're interested in learning about local traditions, there are also plenty of taverns and restaurants offering Greek nights in Rethymnon.
Whether you are a morning person or a night animal, just make sure to place a booking to rent a car in Crete.

GREECE CRETE HIGHLIGHTS: 1st – 8th August, 2022.
While I stayed in Chania, I did a couple of trips to see more of Crete. Through the Cocoon Hostel I could book a big variety of tours by different tour operators. Crete also has a local bus network which works well and isn’t expensive. As an alternative it is also possible to rent a car, but I didn’t do that during my trip. One of my favourite destinations I went to was Knossos. I love history and I have always been fascinated by the Greek mythology. This was my first time to Greece, so I wanted to see places that are connected to Ancient Greece. Knossos is an archaeological site that dates back to the Bronze Age. Around 4000 years ago you could find a large palace here which was an important centre for the Minoan civilization. This site is very special because it is one of the oldest and best preserved sites in Europe. Legends say that King Minos ruled here and that he built a big labyrinth in which he hid his son, a Minotaur. Eventually Theseus came along and killed the Minotaur. Even though there isn’t concrete evidence that King Minos actually lived, the labyrinth in the legend is probably Knossos palace itself since it was a huge building with around 1300 rooms. The sign of a bull could be found all over the palace. The centrepieces of Knossos Palace is the throne room. One of the theories is that not King Minos but a woman ruled in Knossos since the throne is shaped for a woman to sit on. Also, paintings and other evidence suggest a female ruler or at least an important female figure for the Minoan people. Our tour guide told us that a theory is that the female ruler had a bastard or disabled child that she hid away in the palace, and this is how the myth emerged. I don’t know if we will ever know the truth, but it was very interesting to visit and learn more about Knossos and the Minoan civilization. After visiting Knossos Palace, I would also recommend going to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. This museum is known as one of the Greatest museums in Greece and contains a big collection of artefacts of the Minoan civilization of Crete. It was a great addition to my visit to Knossos.
Another highlight for me was Balos together with Gramvousa island. Balos is a beach in the west of Greece with a big lagoon. I am not much of a beach person but still it was such a beautiful place to spend a few hours and enjoy the blue waters and the stunning scenery. I went to Balos by boat which was a bit of a wobbly experience since the sea was rough that day. Balos is also reachable by car, but I have heard that it is not an easy destination to drive to. Right across Balos beach the island of Gramvousa is situated. On the top of the mountain there are the remains of a fort where pirates used the live. It is a bit of a climb to get up to the fort but once there you have the most incredible view over Balos and the Mediterranean sea. Such a beautiful place!
A third highlight of my trip to Crete was the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete. From Chania I took the local bus to the botanical gardens and it was one of the less crowded places in Crete. The gardens consists out of a 2.5 km track through the 20 hectares of land full of fruit trees, herbs and other native and exotic plants. Even some animals could be spotted here. At the end we were rewarded with a restaurant where you could eat local food and enjoy the stunning view over the surrounding area. Visiting the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete was a very unique and peaceful experience, and I can definitely recommend it if you want to get away from the touristy places and see more of the inland of Crete.
A place that I did not enjoy at all was one of Crete’s most beautiful beaches, Elafonisi Beach. Elafonisi Beach is known for the little pieces of coral that are swept ashore and give the beach a slightly pink colour. I like going to the beach to go for a swim and to explore the area, but sunbathing is not my thing. Unfortunately, I didn’t come to the right place. When I arrived at Elafonisi Beach I could even see the beach since it was completely covered by sunbeds and tourists. You could only hire two sunbeds at once and since I was travelling alone, I found it a waste of money. I had to walk half an hour through the burning heat to find a spot where I could actually sit in the sand without having to hire sunbeds. Once I went into the water to cool off, I didn’t see any pink sand. Apparently, tourists have taken the pink sand back home as a souvenir with the result that there wasn’t much left anymore. It was very windy when I was there and lots of sand kept flying everywhere. I didn’t even end up taking pictures of Elafonisi Beach since it was so crowded and the only thing that I would be able to photograph were a crowds of (sun)bathing people. I do think Elafonisi Beach is a very beautiful beach, but not during peak season. As much as I loved my week in Crete, this experience made me decide not to go to Greece anymore during the summer holidays. The locals agree that Crete is much more pleasant when you come a bit earlier or later in the year when it is less crowded and the temperatures are more pleasant. Nonetheless I had a wonderful time in Crete. History, beautiful landscapes, good food, sunshine, blue waters and kind people. Crete has it all.

Chania, Crete: Seitan Limania
Half the fun of these pictures is the whole dang story of this day. We wanted to do a beach, picked this one because…well, look at it. But because we were there early in the season, no buses were running down there, and we decided to rent a car from the airport. No problem, right? Well…we went from rental desk to rental desk trying to find the best price, and in the process were warned by nearly every single one of them (there was one exception) that the drive to get down there was really tricky, with switchbacks, and very steep. My friend was driving and it had been a while since she’d driven, let alone, on steep hills, and we were both more than a little nervous by the time we picked the place we would go through, even as we kept reassuring people that we both hike in the mountains frequently and are no strangers to rough terrain. Two things about that: one, it was only 5 switchbacks, they were all paved, and all I could think about was every time my family and I drove out of Dolly Sods in West Virginia (West Virginia!! not even Colorado or Montana, which are even worse!) and we had to stop every 15 minutes to let the brakes cool. America is big. And steep. And the bigger and steeper it is, the more likely the roads are to be gravel or straight-up dirt. Two, even if it had been a nightmare? This beach was worth it.

#tuesdaytravel Tip. Greece 🇬🇷 is full of stunning historic cities, islands, and beaches 🏖 . A Greek island that is not as popular as #santorini but in my opinion has a lot more to offer with less tourists is Crete. #cretegreece (You can also google Chania) is the biggest island of #greece and has two airports which makes it easy and affordable to travel to. There are very #cheapflights from London with British Airways. The island has several nice beaches, such as the one on the first picture. There is #nofilter on the picture, it really is an impressive place. The perfect time to visit is May or September, book a hotel on the #chania side of the island and PLEASE rent a car. It’s hard to get to the beaches if you don’t have a rental car. Local transportation is very slow and does not take you to all of the beaches. I stayed in Chania for a week during May of last year and I spent about $100-120 dollars a day, including hotel, car, and food for two people, so as you can see is a good European option for #traveling. DM for any questions you have and don’t forget to check our website for more #traveltips and also to buy one of these cool #bikinis 👙 that are only $20.99 😎.
