Spring Has Sprung! Stroll Through 10 Elegant English Gardens for Inspiration
realtor.com
Spring is here! Even if nor’easters are still blowing and much of the country remains locked in an unseasonable chill, green buds will show up soon, and not long after that, brilliant, colorful flowers will burst onto the scene. Maybe not out your window yet, but somewhere, soon —perhaps nearby in a jolly English garden.
These proper outdoor spaces named after their Anglophile originators can be a source of inspiration for gardeners looking to step up their game.
But just like on “Downton Abbey” and “The Crown,” English gardens abide by certain class distinctions.
A traditional English garden would be what you find on grand, old estates, with rolling hills, vast lawns, fountains, groves of trees, lakes, and streams—natural or created by a team of landscapers. Some have ornate bridges or a small Greek pavilion.
An English cottage garden, on the other hand, is usually a small, asymmetrical plot with colorful, flowering plants that look natural—never formal or contrived.
“I like to think of it as organized chaos,” says Los Angeles landscaper Mickey Hargitay of English gardens. Hargitay adds that it takes a decent amount of thought and know-how to cultivate such a variety of plants. Those who have English gardens know long hours are spent making their colorful gardens look like they popped up naturally.
Even if it’s cold and gray where you are, we’d like to help you prep for spring. We’ve found 10 gorgeous homes with beautiful English gardens, both cottage and traditional. Come take a look at where the grass is truly greener.
7 Sky Meadow Farm, Purchase, NY

A Glamorous Ballroom Wedding With a Serious Sweet Tooth

From Laurie Arons Special Events… Our sweet bride comes from a deeply rooted San Francisco family, so it was only natural their love for the city took a prominent role in planning her wedding to our groom, a tech expert in the legal industry. A graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory and a member of the SI Parish, the bride walked down the Jesuit Baroque church’s magnificent aisle surrounded by 230 friends and family members. Because she is an elementary school teacher, children were an important part of the ceremony. Five flower girls and ring bearers escorted her down the aisle, Ragazzi Boys Choir sang hymns at the Catholic ceremony and many of her students attended the church wedding. The reception was held at the stately Four Seasons San Francisco, a special place for the family where many celebrations have taken place over the years. The couple chose blush & gold for their color palette, with the occasional accent of Golden Gate bridge red for fun. The bride’s grandmother loves sweets, so guests found their seat assignments on a chart full of blush and red lollipops arranged in the shape of a heart. In addition to their coffee crunch flavored wedding cake, the couple also offered a “cookie bar” from a local favorite Anthony’s Cookies. But if guests weren’t too full of sweets before the night ended, late night California burritos were tray-passed on the dance floor, in a nod to the groom’s San Diego roots and favorite guilty pleasure.
