Renée Sintenis (1888-1965) - Große Daphne
Bronze with black-brown patina, granite base. Created in 1930.
Height: 56.5 inches, 143.7 cm. Base: 3.2 x 9.9 x 11.8 inches, 8 x 25 x 30 cm. Estimate: €200,000-300,000.
Sold Ketterer, Munich, 7 June 2024 for €584,200 incl B.P.
Lifetime cast by Hermann Noack foundry, Berlin-Friedenau. Sintenis was a prominent German sculptress in the first half of the 20th century. Around ten casts of this size are known, five of which are in museums.
Depicts the nymph Daphne metamorphosing into a laurel tree as she flees the love-stricken god Apollo. From Ovid's poem Metamorphoses.
'Große' is pronounced like 'grosse', i.e. big. There are a couple of earlier little casts of Daphne up for auction elsewhere which I'll post as well.

Daphne Renée Sintenis 1930
I saw a different version of this statue at the St. Louis Art Museum and fell in love with it. Depicts the transformation of the nymph Daphne into a tree.
