2022 Renault Kiger Review
If you are someone looking for your first car or planning to graduate from your generic hatchback to a sub-compact SUV, then you are quite literally spoiled for choice. Today, we have both indigenous and global brands offering exciting options in this space and among them is Renault’s offering the Kiger SUV, which received a number of updates for 2022. We recently drove a 2022 model of the sub-compact SUV and here are our impressions
Exterior & Upgrades:
The Renault Kiger for sale was a good-looking product from the beginning when it launched back in February 2021, with sharp creases and proportionate dimensions. Renault reports that it has produced over 50,000 Kiger compact SUVs since its launch in 2021.
For the 2022 update, Renault added some tidbits to amp it up. Like the turbo decal stretching across the door panels, a red Renault badge in the centre of the 16-inch machined alloy wheels and an all-new stealth black body colour. The Kiger now also gets a skid plate on the front and a chrome strip on the tailgate for 2022, while the door handles and ORVMs get a blacked-out treatment that gives good contrast.
On the inside, not much has changed visually but there are noteworthy upgrades. The Kiger models on sale now have a wireless charger as standard, across all variants. The grey plastic insert that ran through the middle of the dash now features a sporty red theme. The blacked-out fabric seats feature red stitching as well for 2022 and the quilted texture also looks and feels nice. But the major upgrade in 2022 for the Kiger is the addition of Cruise Control for comfortable highway rides.
Engine & Transmission options:
The 3-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine is offered in three different states of tune out of which two are turbocharged and the top of the line even offers a CVT gearbox, and for the budget-conscious, there is also an AMT transmission on offer. Overall, the Kiger offers 20 variants spread between the Rs 6 to 10.6 lakh band that are intended to suit a wide spectrum of buyers.
Amidst the fierce competition, the Kiger is relying on its modern styling and European design characteristics to woo buyers. But what about its driving and handling characteristics? Do they live up to the standards that we have come to expect from a Renault SUV since the Duster?
Performance & handling:
The 1.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 73 kW of power and 152 Nm of torque with manual transmission and 160 Nm of torque with the X-Tronic CVT. Whereas, the 1 litre Energy engine produces 53 KW of power and 96 Nm of torque. The turbocharged version that we drove, felt peppy and did not feel out of breath under any circumstance. However, you can notice the typical rubber band effect of the CVT transmission. But it is nothing that one cannot get used to. Renault also claims that the Kiger offers fuel efficiency of 20.5 km to the litre, however, during our test ride, we were able to churn out a little over 18 km/l as per the onboard calculator.
The Kiger offers three driving modes: eco, normal and sport. While the eco and normal modes are distinct in their own right it is the sport mode where the Kiger really comes alive and performs noticeably well. Even the CVT's response becomes much quicker than it does in normal or eco mode. We also took the Kiger over some rough rural patches and the compact SUV easily tackled bad roads and narrow streets thanks to its modest dimensions and the McPherson strut suspension set-up on the front. However, when going over potholes the suspension does get quite vocal, to the point where passengers could get uncomfortable. Overall, for a car that weighs under 1,500 kilograms, the Kiger is both capable and fun to drive and a lot of the fun factor can be attributed to its turbocharged engine.
Interior:
We would like to make a special mention of the all-black interior theme which was a personal favourite. As it gives the cabin a sporty appeal and will be easy to maintain in the long run. The digital instrument cluster hosts a lot of information and even changes its configuration depending on the driving mode that has been selected. The central 8-inch infotainment touchscreen has a simple UI and is fairly easy to operate. It is not going to wow you but it will not even disappoint. The audio quality from the 8-speaker system is sufficient and the wireless charger works even with your phone cover on. At the rear, the Kiger offers 405 litres of boot space that easily accommodates our production equipment and several bags. In simple terms, two large bags or three medium-sized bags would fit flush inside the boot.
However no car is perfect and the Kiger is no exception, while technically it is a five-seater, during long drives, only 4 adults will feel comfortable sitting at the back. Those who appreciate a good fit and finish might end up feeling underwhelmed as there is a noticeable lack of finish in some areas of the interior packaging.

What You Want To Know About The Revised Renault Duster In South Africa
The Renault Duster was given a refresh in 2021 that includes subtle visual enhancements as well as a rejigged line-up that adopts Renault’s latest model grade names that were first introduced with the Kiger.
While the range was previously offered in Expression, Dynamique and Prestige flavours, the UPDATED line-up gives you a choice of three ‘Zen’ models as well as a flagship ‘Intens’ variant (and that’s not a typo).
The 1.5 dCi Zen 4x2 kicks things off at R365 999. The midrange models, namely the Zen EDC auto and the Zen 4x4 manual model, are listed at R409,999 and R420,999 respectively, while the Intens EDC 4x2 is yours for R420,999 as well.
The exterior design changes are subtle and include the addition of a rear spoiler and newly-designed 16-inch alloy wheels (although 17” diamond cut alloys are available). Renault has also added some new exterior colours, giving buyers a wide range of hues that include Arizona Orange, Fusion Red, Iron Blue, Brown Vision, Comet Grey, Highland Grey and Ice White.
Inside the new Renault Duster, you’ll find a new semi-flush 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which boasts wireless smartphone replication mirror compatibility, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Standard features in the entry-level Zen model include automatic air conditioning, an infotainment system, cruise control, rear parking sensors, dual front airbags, ESC stability control and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Additionally, the flagship Intens derivative ships with a multi-view camera, hands-free card, Blind Spot Warning, Hill Descent Control, front and rear skid plate add-ons with satin chrome appearance, 17-inch alloy wheels and chrome door mirrors.
On the engine front, the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine has fallen away, now that the Kiger has been introduced as Renault’s entry-level SUV.
This means all Duster models are powered by the familiar 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel mill, which produces 66kW and 210Nm in the entry 4x2 model and 80kW in the 4x2 EDS and 4x4 manual models, which have respective torque outputs of 250Nm and 260Nm. Claimed combined fuel consumption figures range between 4.8 l/100km for the EDC models and 5.1 l/100km in the case of the 4x2 manual.
All Renault Duster models are sold with a five-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and a three-year/45 000km service plan.

What You Need To Know About Mahindra's Compact SUV
Why The Mahindra XUV300 Is The SUV You've Been Waiting For
In SA collisions are almost a norm - drivers change lanes and only then indicate, while others fail to keep to a safe following distance, so one’s driving expertise is a secondary factor on South African roads.
To be safe, you need to be in a car that has passed the crash safety test with flying colours. So, when I got a confirmation that I will be putting the Mahindra XUV300, W8, petrol variation to the test, I quickly googled the car, and the first thing that stood out for me was this: its safety credentials remain unmatched in its class.
It is needless to say that nobody leaves their homes with the hope that they will get into a car accident. But getting to your destination without a scratch on the car or losing your cool with fellow motorists is an underplayed win.
Parting ways with just over R300,000 for my protection in a car is not too bad at all. This Mahindra was tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme for both India and Africa, the XUV300 set a new benchmark for crash safety in its class in Africa, and it boasts a score of 16.42 out of 17 for adult protection, giving it five out of five stars.
And if you drive with your little one sitting comfortably at the back, the car received four out of five stars for child safety.
I am generally not a fan of compact SUVs. They tend to straddle the line of giving you little of everything, and not entirely anything at the same time. That is my general view on compact SUVs, irrespective of the brand. Most of them don’t have enough boot space, and they give you just enough legroom, but you wish the people in the backseat would have enough legroom too.
But South Africans love compact SUVs, and they continue to buy them. That market is one of the toughest and most saturated. The Mahindra XUV300 competes in a rapidly growing segment with rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Mazda CX30, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Chery Tiggo Pro 4, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Haval H1, to name just a few.
With the XUV300, I thought the interior could have had a more luxurious finish to it, and less of the plastic feel. But the feature of an updated nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system makes you smile again. The new system is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it easy to just plug and play.
With fuel prices always going up and down, the XUV300’s fuel capacity is also equal to most hatchbacks, taking in 42 litres. I consistently got a consumption of 6.4l /100km, but this could be due to the traffic between Sandton and Centurion in the morning and afternoon.
I still don’t understand why this car has a six-gear transmission; the five gears are enough. But it’s a head-turner. When I shared a few pictures of the car on my WhatsApp status, friends and family couldn’t outright guess the brand of the car. They named the competitor brands and were surprised by the beautiful design by Mahindra.
The Mahindra XUV300 is a car that is reliable and has a beautifully distinguishable design. And you are guaranteed the highest level of safety, should the undesirable happen, especially if you are going to be on the road daily.

How The Nissan Magnite CUV Is Made
The Renault-Nissan Automotive India plant at Chennai seems to have its hands full at the time as it is working towards boosting the production of the Nissan Magnite to lower the quite high demand especially for the base variant and on one hand make sure that another launch, Renault Kiger, does not fall behind when it comes to the overall roll-out. The focus on these offerings is essential for the Renault-Nissan alliance but they also have to make sure that they keep up the export supply, which is a good part of the French and Japanese automakers’ revenue in India.
TOI Auto got an opportunity to check the alliance plant out with the key agenda being how the Nissan Magnite comes to life and how exactly will the current production capacity help the Japanese automaker tackle a high delivery period and the high demand, especially when the Kiger has now been rolled out in the market too. And on the sidelines, Shubhankar Singh from The Times of India ended up seeing how the automakers work in harmony to create their multi-branded offerings at a good rate, how automation complements the entire production and how a few export models triggered nostalgia and he was forced to take his eyes off the Magnites and the Kigers for the moment- keep reading to find more about this model.
The Magnite was definitely the highlight of the Renault-Nissan plant at Chennai and was the most seen model apart from Renault’s Kiger and Triber. Sharing the same CMF-A+ platform, the trio- Magnite, Kiger and Triber – seems to share a lot of time on the assembly line together too.
They began their tour in the powertrain shop where they saw the HRAO 1.0-litre Turbo engine and the B4D 1.0-litre engine of the Nissan Magnite being assembled. The key highlight of this part of the tour was how the HRAO engine got the Mirror Bore Coating which has been borrowed from the iconic Nissan GT-R. The mirror bore coating ensures that the energy efficiency is not dropped due to the friction that arises in the engine.
they moved on to the stamping shop where they actually saw the automation prowess of the manufacturer as a giant pressing machine convert blanks into precise body panels of the Magnite and the other models at an enormous rate. Each body panel that comes out of the press is checked thoroughly and then supplied to the body shop. When they moved to the body shop, they saw the metal panels being put together and the extensive inspection processes each of the Nissan Magnite and other models went through.
The most exciting part of the plant was definitely the Trim and Chassis shop where they came across the final build of all the models after which they probably moved to the PDI bay. The colourful assembly lines, multi-brand models, and lots of Magnites and Kigers kept them on their toes till they ended the not-so-brief tour. The final stage of the plant tour was the recently built water wading facility where the Magnite gets tested to check for any undetectable leakages in the vehicle.
The Alliance’s manufacturing prowess
The Renault Nissan Automotive India Plant in Chennai was the first alliance plant to be built after the two automakers joined hands. Since its inception, the plant has produced around 22 models out of which 9 are still produced to date and the parts and die sets are manufactured for 17 models in total. The automakers have kept the rebadging formula going on and some of the models and their parts manufactured in the plant include Nissan Micra, Renault Pulse, Nissan Sunny, Renault Scala, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Datsun Go, Datsun Go+, Renault Lodgy, Renault Kwid, Datsun Redi-Go, Renault Captur, Nissan Kicks, Renault RBC and the new entrants in the market- the Nissan Magnite and the Renault Kiger.
While the dies and parts of many cars are manufactured in the facility, it is just 10 that make it out of the final assembly line- Duster, Kwid, Triber, Kiger, Kicks, Magnite, Go, Go+, Redi-Go and Nissan Sunny. Looking at the Nissan Sunny was definitely a nostalgic experience as it was one of the finest cars to run on the Indian roads but it failed to perform well in the market despite being quite affordable in the segment.
Apart from all this, there were a few things that caught their attention and made them appreciate the automaker’s efforts probably a bit more. The first thing would definitely be the autonomous robots that keep the entire production process going with their timely supply and the second would be the safety standards adopted by the automaker despite pushing for optimum production.
Magnite’s future in the market
The Nissan Magnite is a very decent package in the market currently as it has positioned itself as one of the most affordable B-SUVs in India. With its sibling and rival, the Kiger, undercutting it by around Rs 4000, the fight will be tough and it will all come down to the looks, features and aftersales experience the automakers offer with their respective models.
The Magnite definitely has made a name for itself in the market as an easy-going SUV and even during their test drives the HRA0 1.0-litre turbo engine and the refined 5-speed Xtronic CVT gearbox managed to impress them the most. Though they were looking forward to an alternate powertrain in the B-SUV, the automakers, for now, have cleared that the Magnite is highly unlikely to feature any alternate powertrain and it all depends on the demand and the market inclination in the future.
